Before trusting a tech product review, check who wrote it, whether the reviewer actually used the product, how the evidence supports the verdict, and whether any material relationship is disclosed. Then compare key claims with other credible sources. No single clue—including a suspicious-looking customer review—proves that a review is fake.
Who is behind the review?
Identify both the reviewer and the publication. Look for relevant experience, the site’s editorial context, and information that helps you judge its independence. A recognizable publication name alone does not establish that a particular review is reliable. The FTC advises consumers to consider who wrote a review and where it appeared: FTC guidance on spotting and reporting fake reviews.

Was this actually tested?
Look for a clear account of what the reviewer did with the product. A review should distinguish hands-on experience from specifications, manufacturer claims, or information gathered from other sources. Be cautious when a reviewer presents a personal experience without describing any use; FTC endorsement guidance says endorsers should not talk about experiences they do not have: FTC Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

The amount and type of testing should fit the product and the claim. A battery-life claim, for example, needs evidence relevant to battery life; merely listing a battery capacity does not show how long a device lasted in use. The FTC’s general guidance does not prescribe a universal technical test plan, benchmark, instrument, sample size, or test duration for every kind of technology.

Can you follow the reasoning from evidence to verdict?
A useful review makes its central claims identifiable, presents evidence for them, and explains how that evidence led to its recommendation. Separate observed results from interpretation: a measured result may be factual, while whether it matters depends on the reader’s needs. Claims that require proof should not rest on assertion alone; the FTC says endorsers should not make claims requiring evidence they do not have.
Check whether the review explains limits that affect how broadly its conclusions apply. The product version, software, settings, test conditions, or use case may matter. These details are not a universal checklist imposed by the FTC; they are practical ways to judge whether the evidence supports the specific claim being made.

How can you tell if a product review is sponsored?
Look for a clear disclosure of payment, a free product, or another relationship that could affect how readers interpret the recommendation. The FTC identifies compensation and free products as examples of material connections that should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Its guidance says people who are compensated to promote or review products should disclose relevant relationships. See the FTC Endorsement Guides and FTC guidance on soliciting and paying for online reviews.

Can you trust the star rating?
A star average compresses many individual opinions into one number. To understand what it means, check how reviews were collected, processed, displayed, and included in the calculation. Read a range of positive and negative reviews rather than relying only on the average. FTC staff recommends transparency about rating methods and fair treatment of positive and negative feedback in its platform guidance for online reviews.
A rating’s meaning also depends on who reviewed the product and what they valued. A customer review can help reveal patterns in everyday use, but it is not a substitute for a technical test of a specific claim.

What suspicious customer-review patterns should you investigate?
Signals worth checking include a sudden burst of reviews, a reviewer with little or no other review history, unusually recent feedback, or indications that reviewers received an incentive. These are prompts to investigate, not a recipe for identifying fake reviews. The FTC cautions that visual inspection alone may not distinguish genuine reviews from fake ones—and fake reviews can be negative as well as positive. Its consumer advice is available in How to Spot, Avoid, and Report Fake Reviews.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor review platforms, FTC staff recommends reasonable processes to address authenticity, investigating reports of suspicious reviews, and avoiding practices that change a review’s message or scrutinize negative reviews more harshly. These are recommendations for platforms, not a guarantee that every hosted review is genuine or that every report will be investigated.

How should you compare reviews of the same product?
When two reviews disagree, compare what each one actually evaluated before deciding which conclusion is more useful. A different product version, software release, test condition, or intended use can explain a difference without either review being dishonest.
- Evidence of hands-on use.
- Clarity about the method and the claim being tested.
- Disclosure of material relationships.
- Whether the product version and test conditions match.
- How directly the evidence supports the verdict.
- Whether other credible sources reach compatible conclusions.
These comparison points are a practical framework, not an official FTC scoring system. For important claims, check more than one credible source, including impartial expert reviews, and consider the reviewer’s history and the review’s date.
What U.S. rules do—and do not—tell you
The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect on October 21, 2024. The agency describes it as addressing specified business conduct, including fake or false reviews and testimonials, incentives conditioned on a particular sentiment, certain undisclosed insider reviews, company-controlled review sites that falsely imply independence, certain forms of review suppression, and fake social-media influence indicators. An FTC document from 2026 describes the rule as fully effective. This is U.S. federal context, not a statement of law worldwide. See the FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule and its 2026 update on the rule’s effectiveness.
