Confirm when the return clock starts, how long the recipient has, what proof is accepted, whether the shoes must be unworn, what happens to the refund, how returns are shipped, who pays, and which exclusions apply. Give a gift receipt when possible, and keep the shoe box, tags and packing materials until the recipient has checked the fit.
There is no universal “gift return” rule. The U.S. policies of DSW, Nike, REI and Zappos illustrate different deadlines, condition standards, proof requirements and credit options. Treat the examples in this guide as policy-reading models, not as a substitute for the terms attached to your order.

Start with the policy for the exact purchase
A shoe bought in a store can follow different rules from the same style ordered online, bought through a marketplace or marked final sale. Open the retailer’s current U.S. return page and, if you ordered online, check the order-specific instructions in the confirmation email or account. Save a copy or screenshot of the relevant terms and the order details; policies can change after purchase.
Identify the transaction before reading the deadline
- Retailer and country: the examples in this article concern U.S. policies.
- Purchase channel: store, the retailer’s website, app, marketplace or a delivery platform.
- Item status: regular merchandise, promotional purchase, clearance or final sale.
- Order date and delivery date: the policy may use one or the other to start the clock.
- Recipient’s likely return location: a nearby store may avoid postage, while a mail-only process can add time.
Do not assume a retailer’s ordinary window applies to a special channel or to a past seasonal promotion. A policy that says “most items” may still list item-level exceptions.

The seven policy checks that protect a gift return
1. Deadline and start date
Record both the number of days and the event that starts counting. “Sixty days” can mean 60 days after the original purchase, 60 days after online delivery, or 60 days after a store purchase. A gift may sit unopened for weeks, so compare the deadline with the date the recipient will actually receive it. Look for seasonal extensions and write down their qualifying purchase dates; an extension for one holiday season does not automatically carry into the next.
2. Proof the recipient can use
Find out whether the recipient needs a gift receipt, packing slip, order number, account lookup or government-issued identification. A normal receipt may reveal the giver’s price and payment method, while a gift receipt is designed to route the value to the recipient. Ask the seller whether a return without the original receipt is restricted, delayed or limited to a particular credit.
3. Condition, wear and cleanliness
Policies commonly distinguish between trying shoes and wearing them outside. Check the exact language for “unworn,” “undamaged,” clean soles, attached tags and original packaging. Keep the shoes indoors on a clean floor while checking size and width. Do not promise that an indoor try-on is universally permitted: the retailer’s condition test controls, and visible wear can turn an otherwise timely return into a refusal.

4. Box and packaging
Many shoe policies treat the branded shoe box as part of the product, not disposable shipping material. Keep the box, tissue, spare laces, tags and any protective wrapping. Do not put a shipping label directly on the shoe box if the retailer requires the original packaging in presentable condition; use an outer shipping carton.
5. Refund, store credit or exchange
Determine where the value goes. A standard return may go back to the original payment method, but a gift return may produce merchandise credit, a retailer gift card or an even exchange. The recipient generally should not expect cash or a credit to the giver’s card. Check whether the credit can be used online, in stores or both, and whether an exchange is limited to the same style or available inventory.
6. Return route and cost
Compare in-store and mail options. A free store return may be practical for a local recipient, while a prepaid label can involve a deduction from the refund. Check who prints the label, whether postage is charged up front, whether the seller accepts carrier drop-off, and whether the return is considered received when shipped or after inspection.

7. Exclusions and special channels
Read the exceptions section, not just the headline window. Final-sale items, marketplace orders, purchases made through delivery services, clearance locations, worn gear and products bought from another retailer may follow separate rules. If the shoes came from a third-party seller, the recipient usually must deal with that seller rather than the brand’s own stores.

The following comparison uses policy and help material checked on October 13, 2026. It shows why the exact order matters; it is not a blanket rule for every shoe purchase.
| Retailer | Deadline and clock | Proof and gift outcome | Condition and packaging | Method, cost and exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DSW | Generally within 60 days of original purchase for eligible merchandise; a 90-day holiday window applied only to purchases made November 1–December 31, 2025. | Original receipt or packing slip supports a full refund to the original payment method. A gift receipt produces merchandise credit or an even exchange. No-receipt returns require valid ID and may be limited. | Unworn and undamaged for a full refund; final-sale merchandise is excluded. | U.S. store returns are free. A DSW prepaid label costs $8.50, deducted from the refund. Certain DoorDash and Uber purchases have special exclusions; after 60 days, an eligible return with receipt or shipping invoice receives merchandise credit. |
| Nike | Most items can be returned or exchanged within 60 days of online delivery or store purchase. | Proof of purchase is required. A gift can be taken with proof to a nearby Nike store (not a Nike Clearance store) for a Nike gift card; contact customer service if the recipient is not near a store. | Apply the current item-condition terms on the return page. | Products bought from another retailer must go back to that retailer. |
| REI | Members may have up to one year from purchase for most items; the member qualification and item exceptions matter. | Gift receipt or order number can support a return; proof of purchase remains relevant. | Member guidance includes worn or gently used goods, but dirty or unwashed gear may be declined. Original packaging, if available, is relevant. | Read the policy’s exceptions before relying on the member window; it does not automatically apply to every buyer or item. |
| Zappos | Verify the current deadline in the live help page before relying on it; the surfaced guidance was crawled several months before October 13, 2026. | Gift recipients are directed to contact customer service. | Shoes should be unworn, in the condition received and in original packaging. | Because the available guidance may have changed, confirm the current return route and any fee with customer service. |
What the comparison means for a gift giver
Credit may be the recipient’s only practical refund
DSW and Nike demonstrate two common gift outcomes. DSW’s gift-receipt route is merchandise credit or an even exchange; Nike’s gift-return instructions direct a store return to a Nike gift card. In neither case should the recipient plan on the giver’s original card being refunded to them. Tell the recipient what form of credit to expect so they can choose whether to exchange, wait for another size or use the balance later.

A long window can still have strict condition rules
REI’s member guidance is unusually broad about worn or gently used goods, but it also warns that dirty or unwashed gear may be declined and that exceptions apply. By contrast, DSW and Zappos emphasize unworn condition. The lesson is not that one retailer is more generous; it is that “return window” and “condition” are separate tests. A recipient who wears shoes outdoors may lose an option that would have remained available after an indoor fitting.
Channel errors can defeat an otherwise eligible return
Nike directs products purchased from another retailer back to that retailer. DSW identifies special handling for certain delivery-platform purchases. Before gifting, keep the seller’s name and order number with the gift receipt so the recipient does not waste time at the wrong counter.
A step-by-step plan before you hand over the shoes
- Open the current policy. Use the seller’s U.S. return page and the order confirmation, not a search snippet or an old bookmark.
- Calculate the last safe date. Note whether the clock begins at purchase or delivery, then allow time for a store visit or carrier transit.
- Check the item flags. Confirm that the style is not final sale, clearance-only, marketplace-sold or subject to a special promotion.
- Prepare proof. Print or forward a gift receipt, packing slip or order number while removing any information the recipient does not need.
- Preserve the product. Leave tags attached, place the shoes back in their box and keep all inserts and outer packaging.
- Explain the fitting rule. Tell the recipient to try them indoors on a clean surface and to stop if the policy requires an unworn condition.
- Store the deadline with the gift. Put a note in the box with the final return date, eligible location and expected credit type.
How the recipient should test fit without risking eligibility
- Inspect the box and shoes before removing tags. Photograph any shipping damage and keep the packing materials.
- Try both shoes indoors with the socks or insoles normally used. Walk on a clean, dry floor and check heel slip, toe room, pressure points and width.
- Do not wear them outdoors, exercise in them or expose them to dirt while deciding.
- If the fit is wrong, repack every component and start the return through the channel named on the proof of purchase.
- Request the outcome promised for a gift—merchandise credit, retailer gift card or exchange—and keep the drop-off receipt until the seller confirms receipt or issues credit.
These steps reduce avoidable damage, but they cannot override a policy that excludes opened, worn or incomplete merchandise.

Common failure points and what to do
The gift receipt is missing
Ask the giver for the order number or a duplicate gift receipt. Some policies can locate a transaction through an account or packing slip; others may require identification or restrict the result. Do not assume the seller can search by the recipient’s name.
The deadline has passed
Check whether the policy offers merchandise credit after the ordinary window. DSW, for example, states that an eligible return with a receipt or shipping invoice after 60 days receives merchandise credit. A past seasonal extension cannot be reused unless the retailer publishes it for the relevant purchase dates.
The shoes were worn outside
Stop cleaning or altering them until you have read the condition rule. Some sellers may accept gently used goods under specific programs, while others require unworn, undamaged shoes. Disclose the condition accurately when contacting customer service; sending visibly worn shoes under an unworn claim can delay or void the return.

The recipient is far from a store
Use the retailer’s mail process or contact support if the policy directs gift recipients to a store. Nike’s gift instructions, for instance, tell recipients who are not near a store to contact customer service. Confirm whether a label fee will be deducted and whether the credit is issued only after inspection.
The shoe box was discarded
Ask customer service whether an outer carton or replacement packaging is acceptable. Zappos’ surfaced guidance calls for original packaging, and other policies may treat the box as part of the item. Never assume a plain replacement box will qualify.
Questions to answer before buying
- Can the recipient return a gift without seeing the giver’s price or payment details?
- Does the clock start on purchase, delivery or the date the gift is opened?
- Is an indoor try-on compatible with the seller’s “unworn” standard?
- Will the recipient receive an exchange, merchandise credit, a retailer gift card or a refund to the original payment method?
- Can the return be completed at any store, or only through the original channel?
- Is there a label, postage or restocking deduction?
- Are final-sale, clearance, marketplace or delivery-platform purchases excluded?
- Must the original shoe box, tags and inserts be returned?
If you cannot answer these questions from the current policy, choose a purchase channel that provides a clear gift receipt or ask the seller before paying. The safest gift is not merely a shoe that looks right; it is a shoe whose return path the recipient can actually use.
