Profit growth is only the starting point. To judge whether a bank is becoming more durable, trace where earnings came from, how loans are funded, whether credit losses are building, and how much capital and liquidity protect depositors and other creditors. The checklist below is designed for reading a bank’s latest release and filing, not for making an individualized investment recommendation.
The dashboard to read before trusting a higher profit figure
A bank can report faster net income while its funding becomes more expensive, a loan portfolio becomes riskier, or its capital cushion narrows. Read these areas together and keep the same reporting period and definitions when comparing institutions.

| Area | What to extract from the results | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Earnings quality | Net interest income, net interest margin, noninterest income, operating expenses, provisions, and unusual items | Shows whether growth came from repeatable banking activity or temporary gains and releases |
| Funding | Loan growth versus deposit growth, deposit mix, uninsured deposits, and wholesale funding | Rapid asset growth can strain liquidity when funding is unstable or costly |
| Liquidity | Liquid assets, available borrowing capacity, maturity profile, and management commentary on contingent funding | Indicates how the bank could meet withdrawals and other obligations during stress |
| Credit quality | Delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, provisions, and reserves by portfolio | Identifies losses that may reduce future earnings and capital |
| Capital | Regulatory capital ratios, tangible equity, risk-weighted assets, retained earnings, and distributions | Measures the cushion available to absorb losses and support growth |
| Interest-rate and securities exposure | Unrealized securities losses, asset yields, funding costs, and disclosed rate sensitivity | Valuation changes can affect capital and funding flexibility before they reduce reported profit |
Industry averages provide context, but they do not establish the condition of an individual bank. For a specific institution, use its latest earnings release, quarterly or annual filing, and applicable regulatory disclosures, and label the geography and period.
1. Reconcile the earnings increase
Start with the income statement, then explain the change rather than accepting the headline percentage. Separate the recurring components from items that may disappear next quarter.

Net interest income and margin
Net interest income is the spread between interest earned on assets and interest paid on funding. Net interest margin (NIM) puts that spread in context: the Federal Reserve defines it as “net interest income divided by average earning assets.” A bank can post higher total interest income simply because its balance sheet is larger while its margin is compressing. Read both the dollar change and the margin trend.
Check which assets are repricing, how quickly deposits are repricing, and whether management attributes the change to volume, rates, or mix. A rising margin supported by temporary rate conditions is different from a margin maintained through stable customer deposits and disciplined asset pricing.
Noninterest income and operating expenses
Review fees, trading results, mortgage or investment-banking revenue, service charges, and other noninterest income separately from spread income. Determine whether a large increase came from a repeatable customer activity or a market-sensitive line. Expenses should be read alongside revenue: compensation, technology, occupancy, and other operating costs can rise before the benefit of growth appears.

Provisions and one-off items
Credit-loss provisions are an expense today that reflects expected losses in the loan book. A provision release can lift current profit even when underlying credit conditions have not improved. Conversely, a higher provision may be prudent preparation for weakening borrowers rather than evidence that the core franchise failed.
Look for acquisition accounting, securities gains, litigation settlements, tax effects, restructuring charges, and other unusual items. Compare sequential and year-over-year results where available, and ask whether the reported increase would remain after removing each material nonrecurring item.

2. Follow the funding behind loan growth
Loan growth is useful only when the bank can fund it at a sustainable cost. Compare ending and average loan balances with deposit balances for the same period, then inspect the composition of those deposits.
Loans versus deposits
If loans are expanding materially faster than deposits, the gap must be filled by cash already on hand, securities sales, borrowings, or other wholesale sources. That does not automatically signal trouble, but it raises the importance of the funding table and liquidity disclosures. If deposits are growing faster than loans, determine whether the excess is being invested in securities or held as cash and whether that choice is affecting earnings.

Break deposits into transaction, savings, time, brokered, and other categories when the filing provides them. Note the proportion that is uninsured and the concentration of large or rate-sensitive accounts. Core operating deposits tend to behave differently from balances that move quickly in response to yield offers. A bank paying materially more to retain deposits may preserve balances while sacrificing future margin.
Wholesale funding
Identify Federal Home Loan Bank advances, repurchase agreements, brokered deposits, central-bank facilities, and other wholesale sources disclosed by the institution. The Federal Reserve describes wholesale funding as potentially more costly and less stable than core deposits. Check maturities, collateral requirements, current balances, and the capacity that remains available rather than looking only at the quarter-end total.
3. Test liquidity, not just the existence of liquid assets
Liquidity asks whether the bank can meet withdrawals and other obligations when assets cannot be sold immediately at their accounting value. Read liquid-asset balances together with expected cash outflows, pledged collateral, and contingent borrowing capacity.

Questions to answer in the filing
- How much cash and unencumbered, readily marketable securities are available?
- What portion of securities is pledged and therefore unavailable for immediate use?
- When do significant wholesale borrowings and other liabilities mature?
- Which borrowing facilities are committed, what collateral do they require, and how much capacity remains?
- Does management describe deposit concentrations, rapid outflow scenarios, or contingency-funding tests?
Industry liquidity measures can show whether conditions are broadly improving or deteriorating, but they cannot replace bank-specific disclosures. A bank may show ample liquid assets while those assets are encumbered, heavily concentrated, or worth less if sold quickly.

Aggregate credit ratios can conceal stress in a single business line. Examine delinquency, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, provisions, and reserves together, with the breakdown by portfolio.
Delinquencies and nonperforming loans
Delinquency trends show borrowers falling behind; nonperforming loans generally indicate more serious repayment problems under the bank’s accounting policy. Look for movement in early-stage delinquencies as well as loans already classified as nonperforming. A stable total can hide deterioration if one portfolio is growing rapidly or if troubled loans are being sold or charged off.
Charge-offs, provisions, and reserves
Net charge-offs measure losses recognized after recoveries. Compare them with provisions and the allowance for credit losses. Provisions that remain below charge-offs can reduce reserves unless the bank has a documented reason to expect improvement. Rising reserves may be sensible if management sees risk ahead, even before charge-offs increase.
Portfolio-specific exposures
The FDIC’s 2026 Risk Review treats commercial real estate, nondepository financial institution lending, business lending, consumer lending, residential real estate, and agriculture as separate risk areas. Use that same discipline when reading a bank’s tables. Inspect office and other commercial property concentrations, leveraged or private-credit exposures, credit-card and auto performance, home-equity balances, and geographic concentrations when disclosed. Compare each portfolio’s growth with its delinquency and reserve trends instead of relying on the all-bank average.

5. Check capital and the pace of balance-sheet growth
Capital absorbs losses and supports new lending. Track regulatory ratios over several periods, but also inspect what is causing them to move.
Regulatory ratios and tangible equity
Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1), Tier 1 capital, total risk-based capital, and leverage ratios measure different cushions. Tangible common equity provides another view that excludes goodwill and other intangible assets. A ratio can improve because earnings rose, or fall because risk-weighted assets expanded, distributions increased, or securities losses reduced equity. Read the numerator and denominator changes rather than treating the percentage as a complete answer.
Retained earnings and distributions
Compare net income with dividends and share repurchases. Retaining more earnings generally adds capital internally; large distributions can offset that addition. Also examine whether risk-weighted assets are growing faster than capital. Growth financed mainly by retained earnings has a different resilience profile from growth accompanied by aggressive distributions.
Use supervisory context correctly
The Federal Reserve uses the CAMELS framework to summarize supervisors’ assessments of capital, assets, management, earnings, liquidity, and sensitivity to interest-rate risk. Public industry ratios do not reveal a bank’s confidential supervisory rating, so use them as context rather than as a substitute for institution-level analysis.
6. Look for securities losses and interest-rate sensitivity
Bank securities portfolios can connect market rates, capital, and liquidity. Read unrealized gains and losses by category, including whether securities are classified as available for sale or held to maturity. An unrealized loss may not immediately reduce reported net income, but it can reduce flexibility if the bank must sell securities or pledge them for funding.
Best Value
Review the bank’s discussion of asset yields, deposit costs, duration, repricing gaps, and rate-shock scenarios. Ask whether liabilities reprice faster than assets, whether deposit betas are rising, and whether management expects margin pressure if rates change. The exact effect depends on the bank’s balance-sheet structure; industry reports identify the exposure categories but cannot calculate the result for a particular institution.
A practical reading sequence
- Set the scope. Record the bank, country, reporting date, accounting basis, and whether figures are quarterly, year-to-date, or full-year.
- Reconcile net income. Map the change to net interest income and margin, noninterest income, expenses, provisions, taxes, and unusual items. Separate recurring drivers from one-time effects.
- Follow funding. Compare loan and deposit growth, then review deposit mix, uninsured balances, wholesale borrowings, maturities, and pricing.
- Read credit tables. Check delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, provisions, and reserves by portfolio, not just in aggregate.
- Pair liquidity with capital. Review unencumbered liquid assets and available funding alongside CET1, leverage, tangible equity, risk-weighted-asset growth, and distributions.
- Investigate rate and securities exposure. Examine unrealized losses, asset and funding repricing, duration, and the bank’s disclosed sensitivity scenarios.
- Challenge the narrative. If management calls conditions stable, test that statement against the underlying trends and any concentration or maturity risks.
How to compare two banks fairly
Use the same period, ratio definition, and currency basis. Similar business models make comparisons more meaningful: a consumer lender, a commercial real-estate specialist, and a custody bank can have very different margins, funding mixes, and loss patterns.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Earnings | Which bank has the more stable net interest margin and a larger share of recurring income? |
| Funding | Which bank is growing loans without stretching deposit or wholesale funding? |
| Credit | Which bank reports lower or improving delinquencies, charge-offs, and provisions in comparable portfolios? |
| Reserves | Are reserve levels and coverage moving in line with portfolio risk and expected losses? |
| Capital | How do CET1, leverage, tangible equity, risk-weighted-asset growth, and distributions trend? |
| Liquidity and securities | Which bank has more usable liquidity and less sensitivity to forced sales or rate-driven funding costs? |
Do not present an industry average as either bank’s result. Normalize for acquisitions, divestitures, seasonal effects, and different reporting dates before drawing a conclusion.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s 2026 profile, covering FDIC-insured institutions’ full-year 2025 results, reports industry net income of $295.6 billion, up 10.2 percent from 2024. Return on assets was 1.20 percent, an increase of 8 basis points. The same profile describes accelerated loan growth and domestic deposit growth, favorable aggregate asset-quality measures alongside weaknesses in certain portfolios, and strong aggregate capital and liquidity.
The Federal Reserve’s June 2026 supervisory report says most large banks’ nonperforming-loan, loan-loss, and credit-loss-reserve ratios declined slightly in the first quarter of 2026. It reports an aggregate CET1 ratio of 12 percent for large banks at quarter-end. It also says most banks’ CET1 ratios declined quarter over quarter because shareholder distributions and risk-weighted-asset growth outweighed incremental earnings.
These are U.S. system observations for stated periods, not a forecast and not a verdict on any individual bank. A bank can diverge from the aggregate because of its loan mix, deposit franchise, securities book, geography, or management decisions.
Quick Recap
Common interpretation mistakes
- Equating profit with resilience: earnings can rise while funding becomes less stable or capital grows more slowly than risk-weighted assets.
- Using margin as a complete earnings measure: NIM excludes the effect of balance-sheet size and does not capture fee income, expenses, or provisions.
- Reading credit quality only in aggregate: a benign all-bank ratio can coexist with serious stress in a concentrated portfolio.
- Ignoring uninsured deposits: total deposits do not show how sensitive funding may be to confidence and pricing.
- Treating unrealized losses as irrelevant: accounting treatment can delay their effect on income, but selling or pledging securities can still affect capital and liquidity.
- Comparing mismatched numbers: different periods, definitions, currencies, or business models can make a seemingly precise ratio misleading.
- Assuming industry strength proves safety: system averages provide a backdrop, not institution-specific assurance.
