What to Check in a Bank’s Financial Results Before Buying Its Stock

Before buying a bank stock, examine the bank’s earnings durability, loan quality, capital, liquidity and funding, and sensitivity to interest rates—not just its latest profit or a single ratio. Start with its latest annual and quarterly filings, read the notes behind the headline figures, and compare several periods with banks that have similar businesses. These checks can help you assess financial resilience; they do not by themselves establish that a stock is attractively priced or right for you.

Start with the bank’s filings

For a U.S. bank that files with the Securities and Exchange Commission, find its reports through SEC EDGAR. The annual Form 10-K provides a broad account of the business, risks and audited financial statements. The quarterly Form 10-Q updates financial results, management discussion and risk disclosures. Review relevant Form 8-K filings as well; they can report material developments between regular reports. The SEC explains these filing types in its guide to company financial statements.

In the 10-K, read the business description and risk factors, then management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), market-risk disclosures, financial statements, notes and auditor’s report. MD&A gives management’s account of results, liquidity, capital resources, trends and uncertainties, and significant accounting estimates. The notes matter because accounting judgments and measurement choices can affect how figures compare across banks.

Some banks do not file with the SEC. Investor.gov says those banks still provide updated financial information to banking regulators and points readers to resources from the Federal Reserve, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and FDIC: Banks and Credit Unions. For detailed information on a bank’s assets, liabilities and capital accounts, consult the relevant Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) Call Report schedules.

Six checks to make in the results

1. Earnings: are they repeatable?

Track net interest income, net interest margin (NIM), noninterest income, expenses, and returns on average assets and equity over multiple quarters and years. NIM is net interest income divided by average earning assets. A strong quarter may not represent a sustainable run rate: look for one-time gains, unusual costs, changing funding costs and rising credit provisions. The bank’s MD&A and notes can help explain why a result changed.

2. Credit quality: where could loan losses emerge?

Review trends in delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, provisions for credit losses and the allowance for credit losses. Then look beyond the aggregate figures to the bank’s loan types and concentrations. A stable overall measure can conceal deterioration in a particular portfolio or sector. The FDIC tracks exposure and risk across commercial real estate, business, consumer, residential, agricultural and other lending in its Quarterly Banking Profile.

3. Capital: what do the ratios and plans show?

Examine regulatory capital ratios, how they have changed, and what management says about capital resources and planned distributions. Compare like measures and approaches: applicable requirements and regulatory ratios are bank-specific. A high capital ratio alone does not eliminate credit, liquidity or market risks.

4. Liquidity and funding: how does the bank finance itself?

Check deposit growth and composition, wholesale funding, available liquidity sources, and management’s discussion of stress scenarios. Consider whether the bank relies heavily on concentrated or potentially rate-sensitive funding. Deposit and funding details are most useful when read alongside the bank’s own explanation of its liquidity position and assumptions.

5. Interest rates and securities: what happens if conditions change?

Assess how rate changes could affect both earnings and the value of the bank’s securities. The FDIC identifies net interest margins, unrealized securities losses, liquidity, deposit growth and wholesale funding as connected considerations in funding and interest-rate risk. Read the bank’s market-risk disclosures for its specific exposures and assumptions rather than treating an industry-wide observation as a bank-specific forecast.

6. Management, controls and consistency: do the explanations hold together?

Read accounting policy notes, changes in estimates, auditor findings and explanations for material year-over-year changes. Check whether management’s account of results is consistent with the statements and notes. The broader CAMELS supervisory framework groups assessment into capital, asset quality, management, earnings, liquidity and sensitivity to market risk. It can serve as a reader’s checklist, but it is not a substitute for a regulator’s confidential examination.

Compare the bank with relevant peers

When meaningful peers exist, compare earnings and returns, asset quality and reserves, capital, liquidity and funding, and interest-rate sensitivity. Choose banks with similar business models, loan books, geographies and sizes where possible. Use consistent reporting periods and definitions: differences in business mix and accounting judgments can make similarly named ratios mean different things.

The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile provides system-level context on earnings, loan and deposit activity, asset quality and other conditions at FDIC-insured institutions. It is not a forecast for an individual bank. The FDIC says the profile is generally published about 55 days after quarter-end, so check the report’s period and publication date before using its figures. For another view of sector conditions, the Federal Reserve’s Financial Stability Report publishes banking-system aggregates; those figures describe the sector, not a target or minimum standard for a particular stock.

What these checks can—and cannot—tell you

No single ratio establishes that a bank stock is a buy, and the official sources cited here do not set a universal threshold for one. A sound review brings together recurring earnings, portfolio-level credit risk, capital, funding and rate sensitivity, then tests those findings against comparable banks and regulator data. A buy decision also requires assessing the bank’s current share price against its bank-specific prospects and risks; without a particular bank and current valuation, no price threshold or verdict follows from these checks alone.
