Before depositing money with an investment platform, verify the legal firm and the person behind it, confirm that the contact details are genuine, read the disclosures and account terms, and understand fees and custody protections. In the United States, official tools such as SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD), FINRA BrokerCheck, and Investor.gov can help you do those checks. Registration is not a guarantee of performance or proof that someone contacting you represents the registered firm.

1. Identify the firm and professional in official databases

Start with the legal name of the firm and the person who will handle your account or provide advice. Search the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) for investment advisers and FINRA BrokerCheck for brokers and brokerage firms. Check both the individual and the firm, including former names or firm history when available.

Review registration status, employment history, reported disputes, and disciplinary or regulatory disclosures. A filing or document shown to you by a promoter is not proof of registration; verify status in the relevant official database. State securities regulators may have additional information. For futures or commodities businesses, also consult NFA BASIC and the CFTC disciplinary-history resources.

2. Verify that the website, app, or caller is really connected to the firm

A genuine firm can be impersonated. Registration does not establish that a particular website, app, social account, message, or caller belongs to that firm. Find the firm independently through Investor.gov, retrieve its Form CRS from the regulator-linked record, and use contact details in that genuine document to reach the firm. Do not trust contact information supplied only by an unsolicited solicitor or social-media profile.

A polished website, app-store listing, legitimate firm name, or small successful withdrawal is not independent proof that the offer or contact is genuine. Verify through a separate, official channel before sharing credentials or sending money.

3. Read the documents that explain what you are buying

Read the account agreement and the firm’s Form CRS, a short relationship summary intended to help customers understand the firm’s services, fees, conflicts, and disciplinary history. For an investment adviser, review the current Form ADV, especially Part 2’s narrative brochure. These documents can clarify what the firm does, how it is paid, what conflicts it has, and what limitations apply to its services or products.

Do not assume that every platform offers the same kind of help. A service may provide execution-only brokerage, recommendations, ongoing advice, financial planning, or access to a limited product range. Check the actual agreement and disclosures to see which services are included and what the professional’s credentials or the firm’s offerings permit them to recommend.

4. Compare the full cost and how the platform earns money

Ask how the platform and the person serving you are paid, then look for costs across the account and the investments. Depending on the service, costs may include commissions or markups, asset-based advice charges, account-service fees, transaction costs, and charges embedded in investment products.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  • Ask for the fee schedule and an explanation of any charges that do not appear as a direct account fee.
  • Convert percentage-based fees into dollars using the balance you expect to invest. For example, a 1% annual charge on a $10,000 balance is $100 for a year if the balance stays unchanged and no other charges apply.
  • Ask what incentives or conflicts could affect recommendations, including whether compensation differs among products.
  • Compare the service, product limits, and support along with the price; the lowest stated fee may not describe the lowest total cost or the service you need.

Form CRS and Form ADV provide a starting point for understanding these issues; confirm details in the current account terms and fee disclosures.

5. Separate custody protection from investment risk

If the account is a brokerage account, ask whether both the brokerage firm and its clearing firm are members of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), and verify membership through SIPC’s own investor resources. SIPC protection concerns certain customer losses if a brokerage firm fails. It does not protect against a decline in the market value of investments. As Investor.gov puts it, SIPC “does not insure against losses attributable to a decline in the market value of your securities.”

Membership is not a promise of returns, and it does not make an investment risk-free. Understand what protection applies to the specific account and firm rather than treating a membership claim as a general endorsement.

6. Stop if the offer has scam warning signs

Investor.gov states: “There is no such thing as high guaranteed investment returns, and every investment involves risk.” Treat promises of high returns with little or no risk as a serious warning. Other red flags include pressure to act quickly, unsolicited offers, suspicious payment methods, false testimonials, and demands for additional money to unlock a withdrawal. See Investor.gov’s fraud-prevention guidance.

Stop before transferring funds or sharing account credentials. Verify the firm and contact independently, and do not pay an unexpected fee or tax to someone who says it is required to release your money without first checking through official channels. If you suspect a securities scam, use Investor.gov’s SEC reporting and help resources and contact your state securities regulator.

7. Compare candidates on the same terms

If you are considering more than one service, use each provider’s current Form CRS as a standardized starting point, then check Form ADV or account terms where relevant. Compare the factors that determine what you will receive and what risks or costs you will take on:

  • Role and services: execution-only trading, recommendations, ongoing advice, planning, or a limited product range.
  • Registration and disciplinary record for both the firm and the individual.
  • Total fees, revenue sources, and incentives.
  • Conflicts of interest and product or recommendation limitations.
  • Custody arrangements and applicable protections, including the clearing firm where relevant.
  • Account agreement, withdrawal terms, and support contact details verified from official disclosures.

8. Keep checking after opening the account

Review account statements and trade confirmations promptly. Check that transactions match your instructions, and watch for changes to your address, phone number, email, account details, or linked bank information that you did not authorize. Raise discrepancies promptly and keep written records of communications and reports.
