Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore sending an old iPhone for a US carrier promotion, verify the exact offer’s eligible model, condition standard, account or plan requirements, credit terms and deadline. Confirm the phone’s identifying details, inspect its screen and battery, disable Find My iPhone and Activation Lock, and save proof of the quoted value and shipment. A preliminary estimate is not final: the carrier can revalue the device after receiving and inspecting it.
Carrier trade-in promotions are offer-specific. A phone that qualifies for a carrier’s ordinary trade-in program may not qualify for a particular upgrade promotion, and a quoted value can change after inspection. Use the checklist below before you erase or ship your iPhone.

1. Read the exact promotion, not just the general trade-in page
Open the promotion’s full terms and save a copy or screenshot. Verizon says eligibility is controlled by the applicable offer and that customers should read its promotion rules (Verizon’s device-promotions FAQ). The same carrier can have different requirements for new lines, upgrades and existing customers.

#1 Best Overall
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
- Eligible iPhone models: Write down the exact generations, storage tiers and any exclusions. “iPhone” by itself is not enough.
- Customer and account status: Check whether the offer is for new customers, existing customers, upgrades, or a particular account type.
- Plan or line requirement: Note whether a new line, a qualifying plan, an installment purchase or another service condition is required.
- Credit structure: Determine whether the benefit is an instant credit, an account credit or recurring bill credits, and how long the offer says those credits continue. The carrier pages reviewed here do not establish one credit duration that applies to every promotion.
- Trade-in deadline: Record the date by which the device must be submitted or received. There is no single deadline shared by all carriers or offers.
- Return and shipping rules: Save the approved shipping method, label instructions and any requirement to use a particular trade-in flow.
Do not rely on an advertisement’s headline value. The legal terms attached to the specific promotion determine whether your iPhone and account qualify.
2. Confirm the iPhone’s exact identity
Start the carrier’s trade-in questionnaire and answer from the phone itself rather than from memory. Verizon says its validation may include make, model, memory, color, storage and carrier (Verizon Device Trade-in Program Terms). T-Mobile’s US trade-in flow also asks for device details and condition answers (T-Mobile phone trade-in page).
On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and record the model name, capacity, serial number and IMEI when those fields are available. If the carrier asks for an IMEI or serial number, enter the number from the phone or its original documentation exactly. A mismatch between the submitted identifier and the handset you send can delay processing or invalidate the quote.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the carrier’s model selector carefully. Storage capacity and cellular variant can affect eligibility or value, so do not select the closest-looking model. If the phone will not boot, use the original box or purchase record only as a cross-check; the carrier may still need to verify the device when it arrives.
3. Inspect condition against the promotion’s definition
Condition rules are not universal. Verizon’s published requirements discuss a functioning, uncracked front and back screen for the relevant eligibility checks, while T-Mobile says the front display must not be cracked or damaged. Read the wording in your offer instead of assuming that every cracked phone is either accepted or rejected.
Rank #2
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Screen and body checks
- Turn the iPhone on and confirm that the display responds to touch across its entire surface.
- Inspect the front glass for cracks, chips, black spots, lines, dead pixels or lifting.
- Inspect the back glass, camera lenses, frame and buttons for cracks, missing pieces or severe damage.
- Remove a case and screen protector before taking condition photos; hidden damage can still be found during inspection.
- Check that the phone is not bent and that ports and cameras are present and intact.
Verizon specifically notes that validation can include whether the device turns on, battery damage and screen cracks (its trade-in terms). Describe defects accurately in the questionnaire. Selecting “good” for a visibly cracked or nonfunctional phone creates a quote that may not survive inspection.
Battery checks
Look for swelling, leaking, unusual heat or a battery that has physically pushed the screen or back panel outward. Verizon lists swelling, leaking and a battery that is too hot to touch as battery-damage conditions. AT&T’s surfaced trade-in instructions state that the battery must be included (AT&T device-information questions).
Do not mail a phone with a damaged or dangerously hot battery until the carrier gives you handling and shipping instructions. A battery problem is not merely a cosmetic defect; it can change acceptance and the safe transport method.
4. Remove Find My iPhone and every activation or security lock
An activation lock can prevent a carrier from processing the handset even when the hardware is otherwise eligible. Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T each identify Find My iPhone or another activation/security lock as an issue for trade-in acceptance or processing (Verizon promotion FAQ; T-Mobile trade-in page; AT&T trade-in flow).
Before erasing the phone:
- Connect it to the internet and open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
- Turn off Find My iPhone and enter the Apple Account password if prompted. This removes the associated Activation Lock.
- Sign out of the Apple Account if the carrier’s instructions require it.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, then complete the prompts.
- After the reset, stop at the initial “Hello” setup screen. Do not sign back in or create a new passcode.
Menu names can vary slightly by iOS release, but the required result is the same: the handset must no longer be tied to your account or protected by a password that the carrier does not have. If you already sent a phone and realize Find My iPhone remains enabled, contact the carrier’s trade-in support immediately and follow its instructions; do not assume the device will be accepted automatically.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
5. Check account, plan and activity requirements
Some promotions add customer-history conditions beyond the handset itself. Verizon says that some existing-customer promotions require the traded device to have been active on a Verizon mobile account for 60 consecutive days (Verizon’s promotion FAQ). That is a rule for applicable offers, not a universal requirement for every Verizon trade-in or every carrier.
Before committing to the deal, verify:
- Whether your line is eligible for an upgrade or requires a new line.
- Whether the traded phone must have been used on the account for a stated period.
- Whether the purchase must be financed or paired with a particular plan.
- Whether cancelling service, changing plans or paying off an installment affects future credits.
- Whether the trade-in must be linked to the same account and line as the new phone.
Keep the offer name, order number and account confirmation. Customer-service representatives can use those details to distinguish the promotion you accepted from a different general trade-in program.
6. Compare what each carrier’s published instructions establish
The following comparison is limited to the carrier pages cited here. It is not a ranking, and it does not substitute for the terms of a live promotion.
| Carrier | Identity and condition checks | Account or offer conditions | Lock and battery points | Credit and deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon | Validation can include make, model, memory, color, storage, carrier, power-on status, battery damage and screen cracks. | Offer-specific rules apply; some existing-customer promotions require 60 consecutive days of prior activity on a Verizon mobile account. | Disable security features before handoff. Battery swelling, leaking or excessive heat are identified as damage conditions. | Final value is confirmed after receipt and validation. A common credit duration or deadline is not stated; check the named offer. |
| T-Mobile | The trade-in flow asks for model and condition information; its stated eligibility check requires a front display without cracks or damage. | Requirements depend on the selected offer and account details. | Turn off activation locks before returning the phone. | The cited page does not establish one credit schedule or deadline for all promotions. |
| AT&T | The quote is conditional on the actual make, model, condition and operating state; the flow requests an IMEI or serial number. | Use the terms attached to the specific promotion. AT&T Next Up guidance concerns early-upgrade circumstances and should not be generalized to every trade-in offer. | Disable Find My iPhone/Activation Lock. The surfaced instructions say the battery must be included. | AT&T says quoted values may be adjusted after inspection. A universal credit duration or deadline is not stated. |
7. Follow a documented pre-shipment workflow
Step 1: Save the offer record
Capture the promotion page, the terms, the quoted trade-in value, the date, your order number and any confirmation email. Include the exact model and condition answers you submitted.
Step 2: Photograph the phone
Take clear, time-stamped photos of the front, back, edges, screen powered on, About page showing identifying information and the phone powered off. Photograph the package before sealing it. These images cannot force a carrier to accept a device, but they create a record of what you sent.

Step 3: Back up and erase
Back up photos, messages, authenticator data and other content using your preferred method. Remove SIM cards and any accessories the instructions do not request. Disable Find My iPhone and Activation Lock, then erase the handset as described above.
Step 4: Package exactly as instructed
Use the carrier’s label and packaging directions. Do not include a damaged-battery phone in ordinary mail without specific carrier guidance. Keep the drop-off receipt, tracking number and the date you handed over the parcel.
Step 5: Monitor receipt and credit status
Track the package until delivery, then watch the carrier account or trade-in portal for receipt, validation and credit updates. The initial estimate is only conditional. Verizon says it confirms value after receiving and validating the device, and AT&T says a quote can be adjusted based on the actual device and its condition (Verizon terms; AT&T trade-in flow).

The carrier says the model or storage is different
Compare the inspection record with your saved About-screen photo and the submitted IMEI or serial number. Ask the carrier to explain which identifier or characteristic differed. Do not send a second device unless the carrier opens a new, documented trade-in transaction.

The phone is rejected for cracks or condition
Review the promotion’s exact definition, not a generic trade-in FAQ. A front-display crack may be disqualifying under T-Mobile’s stated check, while another offer may use a different standard. Ask for the inspection reason and the available return or appeal process before accepting a lower credit.

Activation Lock is still present
Remove the device from your Apple Account as soon as the carrier instructs you. Keep records of the removal and the support case. A carrier cannot use a password you withhold, so do not provide your Apple Account password to a shipping or support agent.
The battery is swollen, leaking or hot
Stop normal shipping and contact the carrier for a safe handling path. Do not puncture, compress or attempt an improvised repair to make the phone pass inspection.
The deadline has passed
Ask whether the offer permits a late submission or whether a new promotion must be started. Do not assume the original quoted value or bill-credit schedule remains available after the stated deadline.

9. Final pre-handoff checklist
- The exact promotion terms, model list, plan/account rules and deadline are saved.
- The iPhone’s model, storage, IMEI or serial number and carrier are recorded accurately.
- The display, back, frame, cameras, power state and battery condition match the answers submitted.
- Find My iPhone, Activation Lock and other password-protected security features are disabled.
- Your data is backed up, the phone is erased and no personal SIM remains inside.
- The estimate, photos, confirmation number, shipping label and tracking receipt are stored.
- You know how the promotion applies credits and what inspection can change.
Only after every item is confirmed should you hand over the iPhone. Carrier promotions change by offer and date, so reopen the named terms immediately before submission rather than relying on an older screenshot or a general program description.
