Before you trade in an iPhone for an AT&T promotion, verify the exact phone, trade-in value, plan, installment term, taxes, deadlines and cancellation rules shown in your transaction. A headline such as “$0 per month” or “up to $1,200 off” is a conditional stream of bill credits—not cash paid at the counter and not a guarantee that every iPhone qualifies.
Use the checklist below to calculate the complete 36-month commitment, document your phone’s condition, return it correctly and compare AT&T’s credit stream with a current cash or trade-in quote. Offer eligibility and prices can change, so save the terms attached to your order on the day you buy.

Understand what the advertised price actually means
AT&T’s deals page, checked October 13, 2026, displays an iPhone 18 Pro for as low as $0 per month with an eligible trade-in and qualifying plan. That monthly figure assumes a 0% APR, a 36-month installment agreement and, for well-qualified customers, $0 down. Sales tax on the phone’s full retail price is due at purchase. The phone is not simply free at checkout: the promotional value is delivered through future monthly bill credits while the installment and service remain in place.
Another current example is the iPhone Duo promotion. Its published terms advertise up to $1,200 off after 36 monthly credits, but only when all of the listed conditions are met:
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- An eligible smartphone with a minimum trade-in value of $230.
- A qualifying installment purchase of at least $1,999.99.
- Activation on AT&T Premium 2.0 at a minimum of $100 per month before taxes, fees and discounts.
Those requirements belong to that specific promotion. Do not apply the $230 threshold, the $1,999.99 purchase requirement or the Premium 2.0 requirement to a different phone or offer unless the terms attached to that transaction say so. The exact credit amount can vary with the target device, trade-in model, condition, account and whether you are upgrading or adding a line.
Verify the exact offer before handing over your phone
Identify the target device and transaction type
Record the model, storage configuration and color of the phone you are buying, then note whether the promotion is for an upgrade, a new line or another account change. The offer page may show several combinations at once. Restrictions apply, and not every plan or existing line qualifies.
Open the offer’s full terms
Capture the promotion name, the maximum credit, installment length, required plan, trade-in deadline and rules for early payoff, upgrading or cancellation. A public deals page is a starting point; the offer displayed in your cart, order confirmation or trade-in flow controls your transaction. Program terms can change, and AT&T says quoted values are valid only for the duration of the transaction.

Check eligibility in the valuation flow
Enter the exact iPhone model or its IMEI in AT&T’s current trade-in tool. The company says value depends on the device’s make, model and condition. The public materials do not provide a complete model-by-model eligibility matrix, so an iPhone that looks similar to an advertised example may still receive a different value or fail a particular promotion.
Inspect your iPhone as AT&T will assess it
Before accepting the quoted value, compare your phone with the condition questions in the valuation flow. Be accurate about damage, functionality and repairs. A mismatch between your description and the device AT&T receives can change the assessed value or affect eligibility.

Check the hardware and functions
- Confirm that the phone powers on, charges and holds a connection.
- Test the display, touch input, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons and biometric sensor.
- Look for cracked glass, deep scratches, dents, liquid damage, a bent frame or missing parts.
- Review Settings for battery and service information, and note any repair or replacement that could affect the condition assessment.
Photograph the front, back, sides, screen while powered on and the IMEI or serial-number screen. These images do not guarantee a particular assessment, but they create a dated record of what you shipped.
Meet the promotion’s minimum value, if one applies
For the iPhone Duo terms, the trade-in must be valued at least $230 to qualify for the stated maximum promotion. That is a threshold for that offer, not a general rule for all AT&T trade-ins. If your phone falls below it, ask the transaction flow what credit—if any—remains rather than assuming the advertised maximum will be reduced proportionally.

Do the arithmetic before focusing on the phone’s net monthly figure. Include the service commitment, the device installment, taxes on full retail price, activation or other one-time fees and any required down payment. A credit that makes the device line appear free can still require a more expensive plan than the one you use today.
| Cost or condition | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Device installment | Retail price, monthly installment, 0% APR and number of payments | Credits generally offset installments over time; they are not an upfront reduction. |
| Service plan | Monthly price for your line or account before and after discounts | The qualifying plan can cost more than your current service and may be required for every credit. |
| Taxes | Sales tax calculated on the phone’s full retail price | AT&T’s deals page says this tax is due at sale even when the advertised monthly price is $0. |
| Fees and down payment | Activation, upgrade, installment or other charges, plus any amount due today | These charges affect the cash you need and are not necessarily offset by promotional credits. |
| Trade-in timing | Deadline in the order and trade-in confirmation | Missing the window can reduce the value or make you ineligible. |
For the iPhone Duo example, model the Premium 2.0 requirement as at least $100 per month before taxes, fees and discounts for the required period. Multiply the actual plan price for your account by the 36-month credit term, then add the phone’s taxes and fees. Compare that total with buying the phone without a promotion or keeping your current device.
Know when credits start and what can stop them
AT&T says bill credits can take two to three billing cycles to appear. The iPhone Duo terms describe 36 credits beginning within three bills. Budget for the first bills without assuming the credit will be present immediately, and inspect each statement until the promised amount appears.

Cancellation and line changes
Under the iPhone Duo terms, canceling service stops the credits and makes the remaining device balance due. Confirm the exact consequences in your own offer before changing service, moving the line, paying off the installment or upgrading early. Do not assume that a credit stream follows you to another account or survives an early payoff.
Keep a record of the promise
Save screenshots or a PDF of the offer, the trade-in quote, the installment agreement and the order confirmation. Note the expected monthly credit and the first bill on which it should appear. If the amount is missing after the stated processing period, contact AT&T with the order number and trade-in confirmation rather than relying on a verbal description of the advertisement.
Return the old iPhone on time and prove that you did
AT&T’s current process page says an online trade-in should be sent within 30 days after you activate the new phone. AT&T trade-in terms surfaced with the program also say a device must be shipped within 30 days after accepting the trade-in credit or offer. Those descriptions may refer to different stages, so use the specific date printed in your order or trade-in confirmation if it differs from a general webpage.
- Start the trade-in. Enter the make, model or IMEI and accept the quoted value only after reading the conditions.
- Choose delivery. Return the phone in an AT&T store or request the prepaid mailing kit or label offered for your transaction.
- Prepare the device. Back up your data, sign out of accounts, erase all content and settings, and disable Find My iPhone and any other activation lock.
- Handle cellular service. Remove a physical SIM. If the phone uses eSIM, contact the carrier as directed so the line is suspended or transferred correctly.
- Pack exactly as instructed. Follow AT&T’s supplied packing directions. Do not add a case, cable, power adapter or other accessory unless AT&T specifically requests it.
- Ship or hand it over before the deadline. Obtain a receipt, tracking number and trade-in confirmation. Keep them until the final promotional credit appears.
The program terms indicate a limit of five devices per person in a 12-month period. If you are trading in several phones, check that limit before beginning another transaction.
Protect your data and activation status
A factory reset alone is not enough if an activation lock remains linked to your account. On the old iPhone, make a current backup, sign out of Apple services, turn off Find My, erase the device and verify that the setup screen no longer requests your credentials. Remove a physical SIM, and follow the carrier’s instructions for an eSIM line.

Apple’s trade-in guidance also recommends checking Parts and Service History for unfinished repairs and using the supplied shipping kit. That guidance helps with preparation, but AT&T’s packaging, deadline and accessory instructions control an AT&T return. Never place personal documents, passwords or an unneeded accessory in the box.

Get a current quote from Apple, a cash-resale channel or another carrier before accepting a conditional credit. Apple says its estimate depends on model and condition, and the device it receives must match the condition you described. A quote is useful only when you compare equivalent phones, storage, condition and timing.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Value form | Is the amount cash or a 36-month bill-credit stream? |
| Total obligation | What will the plan, installment, tax and fees cost over the full term? |
| Eligibility | Does the offer accept your exact model, storage and condition? |
| Timing and risk | When do you receive money or credits, and who bears shipping or assessment risk? |
| Exit terms | What happens if you cancel, pay off the phone, upgrade or change the line? |
| Account requirement | Does the alternative require a new line or a more expensive plan? |
There is no independent market-wide figure in the available material for a typical iPhone trade-in value or the percentage of customers who receive a maximum credit. Treat any “up to” amount as a ceiling tied to specific conditions, and do not call one option better until you have comparable, current quotes.
Fix common problems before they cost you the promotion
The quote is lower than the advertisement
Recheck the exact model, storage and condition answers, then read the offer’s minimum-value rule. Confirm that the target phone, plan and transaction type match the advertisement. If the valuation flow still differs, save both screens and ask AT&T which promotion is attached to your order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe first bills show no credit
Check the order status, shipment confirmation and billing-cycle date. Credits can take two to three cycles under AT&T’s stated process. If the promised window has passed, provide the saved offer and tracking proof to customer support and request a review of the promotional code or trade-in assessment.

The device is rejected or reassessed
Use your photographs, IMEI record, receipt and tracking history when disputing a mismatch. Explain any repair, damage or functional issue accurately; an incorrect condition description can legitimately change the value.
Find My iPhone was left on
Remove the activation lock immediately through your Apple account or the device if you still have access, then notify AT&T. Do not erase your evidence of the phone’s condition until the trade-in is resolved.
You need to cancel before 36 months
Read the offer’s cancellation clause and request the exact payoff amount before changing service. In the iPhone Duo terms, cancellation stops future credits and leaves the remaining device balance due.

- The exact target phone, upgrade or new-line status and qualifying plan are written down.
- Your iPhone’s IMEI valuation and condition answers meet the offer’s stated threshold.
- You have calculated 36 months of service and device costs, full-price tax and every listed fee.
- You can pay the initial taxes or down payment without relying on future credits.
- You understand the first-credit timing and the consequences of cancellation, early payoff and upgrade.
- Your backup is complete, Find My and activation lock are disabled, and SIM or eSIM service is handled.
- The return date in your confirmation is on your calendar, with packaging and tracking evidence retained.
- A current alternative quote gives you a fair comparison of cash value versus conditional credits.
Proceed only when the written offer still makes sense after including the plan commitment and exit risk. If one requirement is unclear, pause the trade-in and ask AT&T to identify the exact terms attached to your order before surrendering the phone.
