Why the order matters
Three separate risks are easy to confuse. You can lose information by resetting before a successful transfer; you can delay or invalidate a handover by leaving an account or lock on the phone; and you can receive less money if the condition, storage, model or damage in your quote does not match the device that arrives. Treat preparation as a sequence rather than one “wipe phone” action.

Google’s Android guidance says to clear data and reset a device before recycling, donating or trading it to protect personal information. That instruction covers the phone itself. It does not establish that a factory reset removes copies already stored in cloud services, on a computer or on another device, so handle those copies separately.

Back up before touching reset settings
Move your information to the replacement phone, a computer or another destination while the old OnePlus still works. Use the transfer or backup method available to your Android version, then check the destination rather than assuming that a completed progress bar means everything arrived.

- Open several recent and older photos and videos.
- Check contacts, call history and important messages.
- Open documents and downloads that you need to keep.
- Confirm that calendar data, notes and authenticator or two-factor applications have a recovery method.
- Sign in to the accounts you rely on and verify that their data is present.
Google explicitly states that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Banking, messaging, game and authenticator apps may require an in-app export, a new-device registration or a separate recovery process. Keep the old phone available until those checks are complete.
Make sure you can unlock the account after reset
Know the Google account address and password previously used on the phone, and know the current screen-lock code. Android may request security information during setup after a reset. If you recently changed the Google password, Google’s reset guidance advises waiting 24 hours before performing the factory reset; this helps avoid an account-verification problem during reactivation.
Check for removable storage
Some OnePlus models accept a physical memory or data-storage card, while others do not. Inspect the tray and the phone’s specifications, and remove any memory card before handing the device over. Remove the SIM card as well. A reset of the phone does not return a card that remains in the tray, and the card can contain personal files or an active mobile identity.
2. Remove account ties and device locks
Remove every Google account
Google’s general Android checklist uses this route: Settings > Passwords & accounts > select each Google account > Remove account. OnePlus and Android labels vary by model and software version, so use the equivalent account-management screen shown on your phone. Repeat the action for every Google account listed, not just the account you use most often.
Removing the account before erasing is important because an account left on the device can trigger activation or factory-reset protection for the next owner. If the menu asks for your PIN, pattern or password, enter the current screen-lock credential.

Remove other accounts and locks required by the recipient
Sign out of any other personal accounts that remain in the settings list or in manufacturer services, and disable screen locks, device-finding features or management profiles when the trade-in instructions require it. The OnePlus US trade-in FAQ specifically says passwords and locks must be removed before shipping. A work or school management profile may require its administrator to release the phone; resolve that before you reset it.
3. Factory-reset the exact OnePlus model
Use the on-phone menu or the model manual
OnePlus manuals show that reset names and paths differ across generations and software releases. On many recent Android builds the option is under a system-reset or backup-and-reset section, but do not force that path if the labels on your phone differ. Search Settings for “factory reset” or follow the manual for your model and installed software.
- Confirm that your data transfer and account removal are finished.
- Connect the phone to power or ensure it has enough charge to complete the process.
- Open the model-specific reset command in Settings and choose the option that erases all data.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully; it should list local user data, accounts and downloaded applications that will be removed.
- Confirm the reset and wait without interrupting the phone.
A factory reset erases local user data. It is not a backup operation and cannot be undone from the phone. If the phone cannot reach Settings, use the recovery instructions for that specific model from its OnePlus manual, taking extra care because recovery menus can include options that erase data immediately.
Verify the handover state
When the reset finishes, let the phone reach the initial setup or welcome screen. Do not sign back in to test it; the setup screen is the useful handover state. If your accounts, photos or home screen still appear, the reset did not complete as expected. Repeat the model-specific process only after checking that you have not accidentally restored a backup during setup.
Understand what the reset does not prove
The reset removes the user data stored on that phone. It does not prove that a copy in Google services, another cloud provider, a computer, a messaging recipient’s phone or a memory card has been deleted. Delete or manage those separate copies according to the service you use. The OnePlus US processing partner says it professionally wipes devices it receives, but that handling is not a substitute for erasing the phone yourself before shipment.

4. Record condition before requesting or accepting an offer
Describe the device accurately
Write down the exact OnePlus model, storage capacity, color if requested, carrier or regional version, and visible faults. Note cracked glass, dents, deep scratches, screen discoloration, camera or microphone problems, charging issues, swollen batteries and missing buttons. Record whether the phone powers on, reaches the setup screen and accepts a charge. Do not describe a damaged or account-locked phone as fully working: OnePlus US terms require the device particulars supplied with a trade-in to be true and accurate.

Photograph the evidence
The cited OnePlus US FAQ recommends photographs of the front, back and, where applicable, the IMEI screen, plus a photo of the device alongside the shipping label. Take clear, time-stamped images before packing. Keep the IMEI image private; send it only through the legitimate trade-in process or to a buyer who genuinely needs it for a transaction check.
Read the quote and its conditions
A trade-in quote is an offer for the stated device and condition, not a guaranteed universal resale price. OnePlus says its official trade-in partner determines US market value, and its terms identify market conditions, inventory, season and device age as factors. The US terms also state that values may decrease by approximately 2% each week as devices age and market conditions change. That is a statement about that program, not an independent depreciation rate for every OnePlus phone.
Before accepting, check the live quote, the condition definitions, any inspection or adjustment rules, the form and timing of payment, and the deadline. A quote can be revised if inspection finds a different model, storage size or condition than the one submitted.
5. If you use a US OnePlus trade-in program
Confirm the current terms first
The OnePlus US FAQ and terms cited for this checklist are program-specific and can change. Confirm that the offer is available in your country, that the device is eligible, who evaluates it, how payment is issued and what happens if the inspected value differs from the quote. Do not carry a US deadline or partner arrangement into another market.

Meet the 21-calendar-day shipping window
The cited US FAQ says the seller should ship within 21 days after receiving the successful trade-in email. That is a program deadline measured from that email, not a general rule for all OnePlus offers. Check the live message and terms for your order, because a different market or revised program can use a different window.
Pack the phone as the instructions specify
Use the provided shipping label and your own box, as the cited US FAQ instructs. Securely cushion the phone so it cannot move inside the package. Remove SIM and memory cards, accessories and personal items before sealing the box. Keep the tracking receipt and your condition photographs until the evaluation and payment are complete.
The processing partner evaluates the device and the FAQ says it professionally wipes data. You should still remove accounts and perform the factory reset before sending it; the center’s later wipe protects its intake process, not your responsibility to remove access and personal information before transit.

For a private sale, document the agreed model, storage, condition, included items, price, payment method and handoff or shipping plan in writing. The available guidance does not establish current marketplace fees, protections or a universally preferable platform, so evaluate those terms yourself before accepting an offer.
7. Problems that commonly derail a handover
The phone still asks for the previous owner
Stop and do not ship it. Reconnect to the phone if possible, remove every Google account and other required account, then run the correct factory reset. If you cannot remove a work or school profile, contact that organization’s administrator.
An important file is missing on the new phone
Do not reset the old device again. Check the app’s own export or restore process, the original account, local Downloads and any removable card. Google’s warning that app backup is not universal means a second transfer method may be necessary.
The reset menu does not match instructions you found
Stop using the generic path and identify the exact OnePlus model and software version. Follow the phone’s manual or the labels displayed in Settings; manuals from different generations are not interchangeable.
The quoted value changes after inspection
Compare the inspection result with your photographs and the condition definition in the offer. Decide whether to accept the revised amount or follow the program’s return or dispute procedure. A changed amount is not evidence of a universal OnePlus price; it reflects that offer’s rules and the device submitted.
The package is delayed or damaged
Keep the tracking number, shipping receipt, photographs and the accepted offer email. Contact the program through its official order channel and provide those records. For a private sale, use the delivery and dispute terms you agreed with the buyer.
