Then prepare the old phone to match your trade-in submission, meet the return deadline, and keep proof of shipment. Carrier promotions are conditional offers—not necessarily an immediate discount—and their rules vary by deal.
Confirm that you and both phones qualify
Save or screenshot the offer terms displayed at checkout. Check the eligible new phone, qualifying plan, whether the deal requires a new line or permits an upgrade, account standing, trade-in model and storage variant, accepted condition, and any restrictions on an existing device-payment balance. If the promotion has a prior-activation or account-history requirement, confirm what it applies to.

For example, Verizon says some promotions for existing customers require 60 consecutive days of prior account activity. Its FAQ also says new Verizon customers may trade in a device from another carrier, so do not treat the existing-customer requirement as universal. Confirm the rules for your specific offer in Verizon’s promotion FAQ and its trade-in terms.
Do not assume that “any condition” removes requirements about the model, plan, account, or return date. If the phone is damaged or will not power on, confirm that the specific promotion accepts that condition; there is no single condition rule shared by all carriers.

Find out how the discount is paid
Identify whether the offer provides an instant discount, a one-time account credit, a gift card, or recurring monthly bill credits. For recurring credits, record the amount, number of months, when they are expected to begin, and what happens if you no longer meet the terms. Verizon says credits may take one or two billing periods to appear after requirements are met. AT&T says trade-in bill credits may take two to three billing cycles. Calculate the cost across the entire credit period, not just the advertised monthly phone price. Include device payments, any down payment, taxes and fees, and the cost of a qualifying plan compared with the plan you would otherwise choose. AT&T’s offers page shows selected deals with 36-month installments and credits; that term and the offer amounts are device- and promotion-specific and can change. Check what can stop or reverse the credits
Before accepting, find out what happens if you cancel the line, change to a lower-cost plan, transfer the number to another account, pay off the new phone early, or upgrade again before the credits end. Verizon lists these kinds of actions among circumstances that can stop or reverse credits. Its FAQ says: “To maintain the discount, the device must remain on a qualifying plan for the entire term.” The terms are not identical across carriers or promotions, so check the written conditions for the offer you will actually accept.

If the old phone still has an installment balance, confirm whether it can be traded in and whether you must pay that balance separately. Verizon’s general trade-in rules exclude a device with an active Verizon payment agreement unless a qualifying promotion accepts it; other carriers may have different rules. Verify the applicable terms before relying on the trade-in value.

Verify the old phone’s model and condition
Use the carrier’s official trade-in checker. Enter the correct manufacturer, model, storage or configuration, and IMEI if requested. Answer condition questions accurately, including whether the phone powers on and whether the screen or battery is damaged or an activation lock remains. Save the answers and quoted value.
Carriers may validate the phone after receiving it. Verizon says the received device must match the submitted description and that it checks make, model, storage, and condition. T-Mobile says it can inspect and revalue a device if its model or condition differs from the submission or the return deadline is missed. Review Verizon’s trade-in terms and T-Mobile’s trade-in terms. If the inspection finds a discrepancy, the value or offer may change under the applicable terms.

Back up, unlock, and erase the phone
- Back up or transfer your data. Verify that important photos, contacts, files, and account access are available elsewhere before erasing the phone.
- Complete any transfer or authentication steps. Make sure you can sign in to accounts and set up the replacement device before removing data from the old one.
- Turn off activation locks. Sign out and disable Find My or other activation-lock features; on Android, follow the carrier’s instructions for Google activation locks or factory-reset protection.
- Remove the SIM and memory card, if present.
- Factory reset the old phone. AT&T advises: “Backup your data and perform a factory reset of the old device.” Follow its trade-in instructions and the instructions for your device.
Keep personal and confidential information off a device you return. T-Mobile’s terms state: “It is your sole responsibility to protect your privacy by removing all personal, confidential or sensitive information from your Device.”

Confirm the return method, deadline, and proof

For a mailed return, photograph the phone’s condition and identifying details before packing, retain the drop-off receipt and tracking number, and monitor the carrier’s trade-in status. Use the required label and packaging where the terms specify them. Those records can help you follow the shipment and address a difference between the phone you sent and the valuation recorded after inspection.
Compare the whole offer, not just the phone price
When comparing promotions, consider the total commitment and how much flexibility you give up. A low advertised monthly price may depend on staying on a qualifying plan and keeping the line active until the credits finish.
- Net cost: device payments, required plan cost, taxes and fees, down payment, and trade-in value.
- Credit structure: upfront discount versus recurring credits, credit length, expected start, and continuation conditions.
- Eligibility: exact phone model and condition, plan, line or account status, and any activation-history or balance rule.
- Flexibility: consequences of leaving, changing plans, paying off early, or upgrading before the credits end.
- Return logistics: deadline, in-store or mail options, packaging requirements, and how inspection or revaluation works.
Offers and carrier rules change frequently. Check the account-specific terms and promotion page at checkout, especially the qualifying plan, eligible trade-in, credit term, and return deadline.
