If any capacity, connection, tire, brake or lighting check fails, repair it before moving.
Why a pre-tow inspection matters
A camping trailer changes how the tow vehicle accelerates, brakes, turns and responds to wind. A connection that looks attached can still be improperly latched, a tire can be dangerously underinflated without appearing flat, and cargo that shifts rearward can initiate sway. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says crashes involving objects in the road and unsecured loads account for about 850 deaths and almost 19,000 injuries each year; the cited NHTSA page does not state a publication year for those figures.

Do this calculation before hitching, not after loading for a trip. A headline towing figure for an empty or lightly equipped vehicle does not tell you what your actual rig can tow.

| What to verify | Where to find it | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Tow-vehicle ratings and instructions | Vehicle owner’s manual and rating labels | Account for passengers, luggage, accessories and the trailer’s tongue load as the manufacturer directs. |
| Trailer capacity and loaded weight | Trailer certification or identification information and trailer manual | Do not exceed the trailer’s GVWR or its axle and tire limits. Weigh the loaded trailer if the actual figure is uncertain. |
| Hitch and receiver rating | Hitch label and installation instructions | The hitch must be rated for the actual loaded trailer and tongue load, not merely for the vehicle’s maximum claim. |
| Coupler and hitch-ball compatibility | Coupler markings and hitch-ball specification | Size, style and capacity must match; an apparently closed coupler is unsafe if the ball is incompatible. |
| Lowest applicable limit | All of the documents above | Stay within the lowest relevant vehicle, trailer, hitch, axle, tire and tongue-weight limit. |
NHTSA advises using the trailer’s identification and certification information and warns against exceeding GVWR. Exact calculations depend on the models, equipment and loaded weights; there is no single universal towing capacity.
2. Check maintenance before the travel day
Look for overdue service, fluid leaks, worn hitch parts, damaged wiring and tire-age or condition concerns before you load. Dexter Axle’s operation and maintenance manual recommends completing some checks two to three weeks before travel, leaving time to obtain parts or have repairs performed. Follow the maintenance intervals for your particular vehicle and trailer.
Inspect the hitch hardware
- Look for cracks, deformation, excessive wear, loose fasteners or corrosion on the receiver, ball mount, hitch ball and attachment points.
- Lubricate or adjust the hitch only as its manufacturer instructs. Some components require lubrication; others specify a different treatment.
- Verify that any weight-distribution or sway-control equipment is installed and adjusted according to its instructions.
3. Couple the trailer correctly
- Position the tow vehicle so the hitch ball is centered under the coupler.
- Lower the coupler fully onto the ball. Close the latch and install its retaining pin or lock.
- Visually confirm that the latch is completely engaged. If the coupler has an adjustment or inspection indicator, use it as directed.
- Raise the trailer slightly with the tongue jack and confirm the connected vehicle lifts with it before lowering the jack completely. Do not use this as a substitute for the manufacturer’s coupling test.
- Retract or secure the jack and any stabilizers so they cannot contact the road.
Never tow with a latch that is partly closed, a missing retaining device or a coupler that does not match the hitch ball.
4. Attach safety chains, the breakaway system and wiring
Safety chains
Attach both chains to the designated points on the tow vehicle or hitch, not to a convenient piece of sheet metal. Wisconsin Department of Transportation guidance and the Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual both instruct users to cross the chains under the trailer tongue. The crossed cradle can help support the tongue if the coupler separates. Keep enough slack for the tightest turn, but not so much that a chain drags, catches or can be crushed. Follow the chain and hitch manufacturer’s attachment instructions if they differ.

Breakaway cable and battery
If the trailer is equipped with, or local law requires, an electric breakaway system, attach its cable to the tow vehicle as directed. Use a separate attachment point rather than looping it around a safety chain unless the equipment maker specifically permits that arrangement. Leave enough slack for turning without dragging, while preventing the cable from being pulled tight during normal travel. Check the breakaway battery’s charge and condition where the system uses one. Never test by pulling the switch while the trailer is moving.
Electrical connector
Plug the trailer connector fully into the vehicle socket, secure it against vibration and inspect the pins, seal and wiring for corrosion, cuts or loose terminals. Keep the cable clear of the road, exhaust and moving suspension parts. A connector that intermittently loses a ground can disable several trailer functions at once.
5. Inspect tires and wheel fasteners
Tires
Inspect every tow-vehicle and trailer tire, including the spare, for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, cracking, punctures and uneven or excessive wear. Check pressure when the tires are cold, before driving, because heat raises the reading. Use the pressure specified by the vehicle, trailer and tire manufacturers for the actual load; do not substitute a generic number or the maximum molded on a tire sidewall for the required operating pressure.
A reliable tire-pressure gauge belongs in the roadside kit. Measure all tires with the same gauge and replace a valve cap or repair a leak before departure. If a tire has been run substantially underinflated, have it inspected even if it still holds air.

Wheel nuts and bearings
Check wheel nuts or bolts for looseness and use the torque value, tightening sequence and recheck interval specified by the relevant manual. Required torque is equipment-specific, so a torque wrench is useful only when paired with the correct value. Inspect hubs, bearings and visible seals for heat damage or leakage according to the trailer manufacturer’s service procedure.
6. Test brakes and all lights
Trailer brakes
Confirm that the trailer braking system is present when required, connected and adjusted or synchronized as specified for that system. Test the controller and trailer brakes at low speed in a safe area before entering traffic. The exact test method and controller setting vary by brake type and vehicle; use the instructions for your equipment rather than a universal stopping-distance claim.
Lighting and signals
With an assistant or a reflective surface, test running lights, tail lights, brake lights, left and right turn signals, hazard flashers and the license-plate light where fitted. Check that the tow vehicle’s lights still operate normally and that the trailer plug remains seated while you gently move the cable. Replace damaged lenses and repair grounds or wiring faults before towing at night or in poor visibility.

7. Load and secure the camping trailer
Prevent movement and loss
- Fasten cabinets, doors, awnings, propane-cylinder covers, bicycles and exterior equipment.
- Place loose items in closed containers or tie them down so they cannot shift, fall or blow out.
- Close and latch every access hatch, window and roof vent that could open in transit.
- Recheck the load after loading and again after a short initial drive.
Distribute weight for stability
Load according to the trailer and tow-vehicle manuals, keeping heavy items where the manufacturer intends. Excessive weight behind the axle or a rear-heavy arrangement can promote sway; moving cargo forward may help only if it remains within the specified tongue-weight and axle limits. Do not apply a tongue-weight percentage from another trailer as a universal rule. Dexter provides a general guide for some trailer types, while the Tesla Model 3 manual gives a different model-specific range. The instructions for your exact rig take priority.

Level the connection
With the trailer coupled and loaded, check that it sits level or in the position required by the trailer, hitch or vehicle manufacturer. An incorrect ball height can overload an axle, alter tongue load or reduce ground clearance. Use the specified rise or drop rather than guessing from an unloaded stance.
Adjust mirrors
Set the side mirrors so you can see along both sides of the trailer and detect traffic approaching from behind. Add towing mirrors only when they are compatible with the vehicle and do not obstruct required lighting or visibility. Walk around the rig once to ensure no blind spot hides a person, bicycle or low obstacle.
9. Carry equipment for a roadside problem
Carry wheel chocks, a flashlight, a tire-pressure gauge, a jack and a suitable ground mat, plus basic repair tools appropriate to the trailer. NHTSA’s road-trip kit list includes those items. Confirm that your jack can safely lift the loaded trailer at an approved jacking point; a vehicle jack may not be suitable. Keep a spare tire of the correct size and load rating if the trailer manufacturer provides one, and know where the wheel-nut key or adapter is stored.

Chock the trailer whenever it is uncoupled or parked for loading. Do not crawl under a trailer supported only by a jack.
10. Perform the final connection walk-around
Before moving, walk from the coupler to the rear of the trailer and back. Confirm that the coupler latch and pin are secured, chains are crossed with safe slack, the breakaway cable is attached without dragging, the electrical plug is seated, the jack is retracted, storage doors are closed, tires are correctly inflated, and no tool or chock remains in the travel path. Recheck lights after the engine is running and the connector is under normal tension.
Stop immediately if you discover a failed connection, damaged tire, inoperative brake or light, loose wheel hardware, overloaded rating or unsecured cargo. Correct the defect or obtain qualified assistance before towing.

What to do if the trailer starts to sway
The UK government’s towing guidance for England, Scotland and Wales advises easing off the accelerator and reducing speed gently when sway begins. It identifies excessive speed and incorrect loading as possible causes. Keep the steering as steady as practical, avoid harsh braking on a bend, and reduce speed before hazards rather than reacting late. Once stopped safely, inspect the load, tires, hitch and brake operation before continuing. This guidance is jurisdiction-specific; follow local rules and your vehicle manual.
Legal and regional limits
The GOV.UK checklist applies to England, Scotland and Wales and includes local licensing and legal requirements. In the United States, licensing, required trailer brakes, lighting rules and maximum dimensions vary by state, while the vehicle’s towing capability remains a manufacturer recommendation tied to a particular configuration. NHTSA directs consumers to the vehicle manufacturer with questions about adding a trailer to a vehicle’s load capacity. Check the law where you will drive and do not treat a UK limit, a Wisconsin specification or one manufacturer’s setup range as universal.
Use the manuals as the final authority
There is no universal tire pressure, wheel-fastener torque, brake test, towing capacity or tongue-weight percentage for every camping trailer. The correct values come from the actual vehicle, trailer, tires, hitch, coupler and brake-system instructions. A careful pre-tow check is therefore a sequence of model-specific confirmations, not a single number or a visual glance.
