What to Check Before Switching to a New Android Phone

The safest time to prevent data loss is before you turn on the new phone. Charge both devices, unlock the old one, confirm your Google Account and backup, check storage and Android versions, then choose cable, wireless, or cloud restore. Keep the old phone untouched until you have verified messages, photos, contacts, files and critical apps on the new device.

Google’s Android setup process can move a substantial amount of content, but coverage depends on the phone model, Android version, account type and whether each app supports Android backup. Use the checklist below to identify what needs a separate export or sign-in.

Prepare both phones and your accounts

Charge the devices and keep them together

Charge the old and new phones before starting. A transfer can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data and the method used. Keep both phones powered and near each other until setup reports that copying is complete. Connect both to Wi-Fi where possible; a stable internet connection is required for account setup, cloud restore and many app sign-ins.

Make sure you can unlock the old phone

Have the old phone’s PIN, pattern or password available. The setup wizard cannot copy protected content if you cannot unlock the source device. If the old phone is damaged or unavailable, you will need the Google Account credentials associated with an existing backup instead.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Confirm your Google Account and run a fresh backup

On the old phone, open the system backup settings and check that a recent backup completed. Signing in to the same Google Account during setup helps move the most data. Google’s backup coverage includes apps and some app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS. Separate Google apps can back up additional information: Google Messages can back up RCS conversations, Phone by Google can back up phone settings and blocked numbers, and Google Photos can back up photos and videos.

A backup is not a complete image of the phone. Apps decide which settings and data they support, and some do not participate in Android backup at all. Note the backup date and account before you begin so you can distinguish an old restore from a current one.

Check free storage on the new phone

Compare the old phone’s used storage with the new phone’s available space. If the new device is smaller, the setup wizard can let you select which categories to copy, but you should decide in advance what is essential. Large videos, offline music, downloads and messaging media are common reasons a transfer runs out of room.

Choose a transfer method before initial setup

Android’s setup flow generally offers direct phone-to-phone copying by cable or Wi-Fi, plus restoration from a Google backup. Google states that cable and wireless transfer support the same categories of data; a cable is not evidence that more content will be copied.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Method What you need When it fits Important limitation
Cable A data-capable cable that fits both phones; an adapter may be required when connectors differ Both phones are available and you can keep them physically connected during setup The transfer option is normally presented during initial setup and may not remain available later
Wi-Fi Both phones charged, nearby and connected to a reliable network You do not have a compatible cable or adapter Keep both devices connected and follow the on-screen pairing prompts until copying finishes
Cloud restore A completed Google backup and access to its Google Account The old phone is unavailable, or you want to restore from an earlier backup Only data included in the backup is available; a full restore can take up to 24 hours to complete

Start the copy during the new phone’s first setup whenever possible. Google notes that the transfer choice may be offered only once. If you skip it, you may need to reset the new phone to see the setup flow again, which erases anything already placed on that device.

Check physical connections for a wired move

Inspect both charging ports and confirm that the cable supports data, not only charging. USB-C-to-USB-C is common on recent phones; older combinations may need a compatible adapter. Do not force a connector into a port. If the cable is not recognized, switch to the wireless option rather than interrupting setup repeatedly.

Know what usually copies—and what does not

The following lists describe Google’s general Android-to-Android setup behavior. Individual manufacturers, Android releases and apps can change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Usually transferable during setup Often not copied automatically
Apps and certain app data Downloads such as PDF files
Music, photos and videos in visible storage Photos, videos or music in hidden folders
Contacts stored on the phone or SIM Apps installed outside Google Play
Text messages and multimedia attached to them Data from apps that do not use Android backup
Most device settings, which vary by phone Non-Google accounts and their data
Wallpaper and call history Contacts and calendars synchronized with other services
Custom ringtones

Accounts, contacts and calendars

Contacts or calendar events already synchronized to an account may simply reappear after you add that account on the new phone; they are not necessarily copied as local records. This matters for work, school, manufacturer and other non-Google services. Write down every account that supplies contacts or calendars and verify that you know its password or sign-in method.

Files and downloads

Move documents, PDFs, downloaded music and files in app-specific folders separately. Use the old phone’s file manager to identify folders that are not part of the setup transfer, then copy them to a computer, external storage or a cloud service supported by that account. Open several files on the new phone rather than checking only that the folder exists.

Apps and their private data

An app icon appearing on the new phone does not prove that its local data came across. Banking, authenticator, password-manager, game and editing apps commonly require a fresh sign-in, a secure export or device re-registration. Before erasing the old phone, open each critical app and follow its own migration instructions.

Check Android-version compatibility

Compare the Android version on both phones in their system information screens. Google recommends that the destination phone run the same Android version as the old phone or a newer one. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a lower-version phone; attempting that downgrade can leave the transfer incomplete.

Install available system updates on the new phone before restoring when practical, while leaving enough battery and time for the update and restart. If the new phone is on an older release that cannot be updated, plan for manual exports and app-specific recovery rather than assuming the backup will be complete.

Handle WhatsApp and other app-specific histories separately

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has its own transfer and restore requirements. Keep the old phone with WhatsApp available, or confirm that its WhatsApp backup is enabled and current. On the new phone, use the same Google Account and the same phone number used on the old device when restoring from the cloud. The setup can offer either a direct transfer from the old phone or a restore from backup.

Check the backup date before starting, then inspect several conversations, photos and videos after the restore. WhatsApp transfer is not guaranteed. If WhatsApp was already configured on the new phone, Google’s troubleshooting guidance may require uninstalling and reinstalling it or clearing its storage before trying again. That action can remove new messages created on the new phone. WhatsApp chat histories cannot be merged, so preserve anything new before resetting the app.

Authenticator, banking and work applications

Locate recovery codes and alternate sign-in methods before switching. Some security apps bind credentials to one device and require an export, a cloud account or administrator approval. Work- or school-managed phones can restrict backup and transfer features; ask the administrator about enrollment and encrypted data before wiping the old device.

Special checks when moving from iPhone

Android’s setup flow supports iPhone-to-Android moves with cable or wireless options that vary by device. Keep both phones connected until setup finishes, including any prompt to move or activate an eSIM. Afterward, test texts, photos and videos rather than assuming the transfer succeeded.

Turn off iMessage on the old iPhone so new messages are routed as standard texts to the Android phone. Photos and videos stored only in iCloud may need a separate transfer to Google Photos or another service. Wireless migration has iOS-version requirements that can differ by model, so follow the current on-screen instructions for the specific phones.

Complete the transfer step by step

  1. Record your starting point. Note the old phone’s Android version, Google Account, WhatsApp backup date, storage used and any accounts that provide contacts or calendars.
  2. Back up and update. Run the phone’s Google backup, allow it to finish, and install sensible system and app updates on the old phone. Do not begin while a backup is still pending.
  3. Prepare the new phone. Charge it, confirm adequate free storage and start the first-time setup. Choose the option to copy apps and data when it appears.
  4. Select cable or wireless transfer. For cable, connect both phones with a compatible data cable and adapter if needed. For wireless, follow the pairing code or confirmation prompts and keep both phones on Wi-Fi.
  5. Authenticate. Unlock the old phone when asked and sign in to the Google Account that contains your backup. Review the categories selected for copying if storage is limited.
  6. Leave the phones alone. Keep them powered and connected until the wizard reports completion. The initial copy may take minutes or hours; cloud restoration can continue for up to 24 hours.
  7. Finish account and app setup. Add non-Google accounts, restore WhatsApp using its dedicated flow, re-register security and banking apps, and download any apps that were not copied.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete data

The new phone has less content than expected

  • Check that both phones used the intended Google Account, not a secondary account.
  • Compare Android versions and update the destination if it is older.
  • Look in Google Photos for backed-up photos and videos; they may be available online even while other restore tasks continue.
  • Search the old phone’s Downloads and hidden folders for files that require manual copying.
  • Open the missing app and check whether it offers its own cloud restore, export or sign-in process.

The transfer stops or will not start

  • Reconnect both phones to stable Wi-Fi, keep them charged and restart the setup attempt if the wizard reports a connection error.
  • Try the other transfer method when a cable, adapter or port is suspect.
  • Free space on the new phone and select fewer categories if storage is insufficient.
  • For a cloud restore, verify the backup exists and that you can sign in to its Google Account.

WhatsApp chats are missing

Do not erase the old phone. Confirm the backup date, phone number and Google Account, then use WhatsApp’s restore flow. If the new installation was already initialized, preserve any new messages before clearing storage or reinstalling because histories cannot be merged.

Verify the new phone before clearing the old one

Use the old phone as a reference and test the new one in real conditions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Place and receive a call, and send and receive SMS or RCS messages.
  • Confirm that important contacts and calendars appear from each required account.
  • Open representative photos, videos, documents and downloaded files.
  • Check recent text conversations, multimedia attachments and call history.
  • Open critical apps, sign in and verify their latest records, settings and security approvals.
  • Confirm physical SIM or eSIM activation with the carrier before relying on the new phone as your only device.

Resolve missing items while the old phone and its backup are still available. Google’s instruction is to clear data only after you have confirmed that all data has been copied to the new device. Then remove accounts as appropriate and perform a factory reset before trade-in, donation or recycling, following the manufacturer or carrier’s procedure.
