Switch to a foldable only after you have tested its folded shape, opened-screen usefulness, app compatibility, durability limits, software support, transfer requirements and total ownership cost. A foldable can turn one handset into either a pocket-sized clamshell or a small tablet-like workspace, but the benefits depend on your habits and the exact model.
Understand which kind of foldable you are buying
“Foldable phone” describes two very different designs. A book-style model opens sideways into a larger screen for multitasking, reading and video. A clamshell model folds a conventional-size phone in half, making the closed package shorter while keeping the open experience closer to a regular phone. Decide which problem you want to solve before comparing specifications.

Book-style models: more workspace
Book-style phones are useful when you genuinely want two apps visible, a larger canvas for documents or maps, or a more comfortable reading and viewing area. They are also heavier and wider than ordinary phones when closed. The larger inner display does not automatically improve every app: some applications may stretch, letterbox, or offer no useful two-pane layout. Test the exact apps you rely on rather than assuming that an app will use the extra space well.

A clamshell is the better fit when your priority is a shorter phone in a pocket or a quick external-screen check for notifications, music controls or a camera preview. Its open screen is generally closer to a conventional phone in size, so it does not provide the same tablet-like workspace as a book-style device. The second screen is valuable only if you will actually use it.

Current dimensions worth checking
Samsung’s UK listings show how much the shapes and sizes vary within one product family. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
| Model | Closed display | Open display | Weight | Battery | Advertised video playback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 | 5.5 inches | 7.6 inches | 201 g | 4,800 mAh | Up to 26 hours |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | 6.5 inches | 8 inches | 215 g | 5,000 mAh | Up to 27 hours |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 | 4.1 inches | 6.9 inches | 180 g | 4,300 mAh | Up to 31 hours |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | 6.4 inches | 8 inches | 9.1 ounces | 5,015 mAh typical capacity | Not listed in the cited specification |
Samsung’s US listing gives Galaxy Z Fold8 a starting price of $1,899.99. Google’s US Store specification gives Pixel 10 Pro Fold a starting price of $1,799. Prices, storage tiers, taxes, promotions and availability vary by country and can change, so treat those figures as regional listings rather than universal prices.
Test the physical experience before you order
Specifications cannot tell you whether a foldable feels comfortable after a full day. Visit a shop or borrow the exact model and use it in both states.
Check pocket fit and hand reach
- Put the closed phone in the pocket you use most. Check whether its thickness catches on the pocket opening or makes sitting uncomfortable.
- Hold it one-handed and reach the top corners of the outer screen. A narrow cover display may be easy to grip but awkward to type on; a wide one may type better but feel less secure.
- Open and close it repeatedly while standing, walking and sitting. Notice whether the hinge position and weight distribution make ordinary tasks feel natural.
- Try your usual keyboard, swipe typing and accessibility settings. The outer and inner screens may require different hand positions.
Use your real apps on the open screen
Make a list of the apps you use for email, maps, banking, work, reading, social video, games and photography. Open each one on the candidate phone. Test split-screen or two-pane layouts, text size, keyboard behavior, camera controls and rotation. A manufacturer may promote multitasking, but the available evidence does not establish that every app supports a useful foldable layout.
Inspect the inner display under different light
Look at the crease in bright indoor light, direct sunlight and a dark room. Check reflections, viewing angles and touch response across the whole panel, including near the hinge. Do not assume the flexible inner screen will look or feel exactly like conventional cover glass, and do not buy on a promise that the crease is invisible. Verify that the display remains comfortable for the activities you perform most.

Read durability claims literally
Water and dust ratings are limited test classifications, not a guarantee against every accident or years of hinge wear. Samsung lists IP48 for Galaxy Z Fold8. Google lists IP68 for Pixel 10 Pro Fold, but its safety guide explicitly qualifies that rating: “Your device is designed to comply with dust and water protection rating IP68 under IEC standard 60529 when it leaves the factory, but it is not dust proof or water proof.”
Google also says resistance diminishes with wear, repair, disassembly or damage, and that a drop can reduce protection. Its guide states that liquid damage voids the Limited Warranty. Treat any liquid exposure as a risk even when a phone carries an IP rating.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep grit away from the hinge
Sand, dust and grit can be especially troublesome around a hinge and flexible inner screen. Follow the current care instructions for the exact model, keep the phone away from beaches and dusty work areas, and never force the hinge if debris is present. A case can help with impacts and handling, but it does not make the phone invulnerable or seal every opening.
Do not transfer predecessor claims to a new model
Samsung’s UK guide says the earlier Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 were certified for up to 200,000 folds and carried IP48 ratings. That fold count applies to those named predecessor models, not automatically to Fold8. The same guide describes freshwater submersion up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes, warns against beach or pool use, and says resistance decreases with normal wear. The current pages reviewed do not establish a Fold8 fold-cycle certification.
Translate battery specifications into your routine
Battery capacity and advertised video playback are manufacturer figures, not a prediction of your mixed-use day. Samsung lists 4,800 mAh and up to 26 hours of video playback for Fold8, 5,000 mAh and up to 27 hours for Fold8 Ultra, and 4,300 mAh and up to 31 hours for Flip8. Google lists a 5,015 mAh typical battery for Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Qi2-certified wireless charging up to 15 W.

- SLIM, CLEAR PROTECTION WITH MAGNETIC FIT: The Clear Magnet Case keeps the original design of your Galaxy Z Fold8 visible, while adding a layer of everyday protection. The smooth edges and slim profile make it comfortable to hold and easy to slip in and out of your pocket.
- EASY CHARGING. CLEARLY PROTECTED: Built-in magnets help align your Galaxy Z Fold8 for fast wireless charging.¹ Just snap it on your Galaxy Z Fold8 and seamlessly attach and detach a range of compatible magnetic accessories.²
Your result will depend on mobile signal, navigation, camera use, screen brightness, gaming, tethering, background syncing and how often you use the inner display. If endurance is decisive, seek an independent mixed-use test of the exact regional model; the manufacturer figures alone are not a controlled comparison.
Google’s safety guide says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold battery was designed to retain up to 80% capacity after about 1,000 charge cycles. That is a design expectation, not a guarantee for every device. Ask whether the phone supports your preferred wired or wireless charging accessories and budget for a compatible charger if one is not included.
Check software support and ecosystem trade-offs
Long-term updates are part of the phone’s value. Samsung UK advertises up to seven OS upgrades and security updates for the Fold8 family. Google lists seven years of operating-system, security and Pixel Drop updates for Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Confirm the policy shown for your local model and purchase channel, because regional editions can differ.
Audit app and service dependencies
- Identify any iOS-only app, business-management tool or institutional login you cannot replace.
- Check whether an Apple Watch, iMessage-dependent group, shared family service or other ecosystem feature has an alternative you are willing to use.
- Verify that banking, password-manager, authenticator, health and smart-home apps support the target operating system and can be reactivated after transfer.
- Check whether your paid apps, subscriptions and cloud-storage plans move between platforms or require a new purchase.
Do not assume that a large inner screen compensates for a missing workflow. The best hardware choice is the one that preserves the tasks you actually perform.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare an iPhone-to-Android move carefully
Samsung’s UK product page describes a newer QR-based iPhone transfer flow with specific prerequisites: the Galaxy must run Android 17 or later with One UI 9 or later, and the iPhone must run iOS 26.6 or later. Confirm those versions on the exact devices before relying on that method. Samsung says its transfer categories can include contacts, photos, music, videos, messages, notes and calendars.

- Back up the old phone. Create a current cloud or computer backup and verify that it completed. Keep the iPhone powered on and intact.
- Secure account access. Confirm passwords, recovery codes and two-factor authentication methods. Move authenticator accounts using each service’s documented export or re-enrollment process.
- Update both devices. Install the software versions required by the selected migration method. If the QR flow is unavailable, use the transfer method supported by the exact Galaxy model and operating-system versions.
- Transfer the data categories you need. Select contacts, photos, videos, messages, notes, calendars, music and documents deliberately rather than assuming every item will move.
- Reinstall and sign in to critical apps. Test banking, work, password-manager, messaging and health apps while the old phone is still available.
- Verify before erasing. Check recent conversations, photo libraries, calendar entries, notes, files, authenticator codes and paid-app access. Only then remove accounts and erase the old phone.
Confirm cellular, SIM and regional compatibility
Check the exact unlocked or carrier model against your network before purchase. Confirm supported carrier bands, 5G service, eSIM and physical-SIM configuration, roaming behavior and any carrier activation restrictions in your country. A phone sold in one region may not have the same modem configuration or service support as a similarly named model elsewhere.
Also verify local warranty handling and authorized repair locations. Foldable repairs can involve specialized displays and hinges, so a convenient service path matters more than a generic promise of nationwide support. Carrier compatibility and local repair terms were not established by the cited product pages; obtain them directly from the carrier and manufacturer for your SKU.
Calculate the full ownership cost
Start with the regional handset price, then add the costs that make the phone usable and protectable:
- Storage tier and any regional price difference.
- A case designed for the exact model. Samsung’s UK page points readers to official Galaxy Z Fold8 magnet cases; a Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and older Fold case should not be assumed interchangeable.
- Charging accessories, including a wireless charger if you want Qi2 or another supported standard.
- Insurance or an accidental-damage plan, including its premium, deductible, exclusions and claim limits.
- Potential out-of-warranty display or hinge repair, after checking current local pricing and turnaround time.
Review the current warranty and protection-plan terms before paying. Launch promotions and older plan details can expire, and an advertised protection option may have different coverage in another country.
Use a decision test instead of a universal verdict
A foldable is a strong candidate when
- You will regularly use a larger opened screen for side-by-side work, reading, documents, maps or video.
- You have tested your essential apps and found their layouts, keyboards and cameras comfortable.
- You accept extra care around the hinge and inner display and have a realistic repair or protection plan.
- The folded shape solves a specific problem, such as a shorter clamshell package or a larger book-style workspace.
Wait or choose a conventional phone when
- You mainly want a camera, battery or one-handed device and will rarely open the phone.
- You cannot replace an iOS-only workflow or depend on accessories that have no acceptable Android equivalent.
- You regularly work around sand, grit, water or conditions that make hinge and flexible-screen care impractical.
- The price, insurance and possible repair exposure would strain your budget.
The final check is behavioral: imagine opening the phone several dozen times a day, carrying its weight every day and maintaining it for years. If the larger screen or compact folded shape will change how you work enough to justify those trade-offs, proceed with the exact model that passed your app, network, transfer and service checks.
