Before switching to a 5G plan or buying a 5G phone in Canada, check coverage where you actually use your phone, compare the full plan and device cost, and have the provider confirm the exact phone model is supported for LTE, 5G and VoLTE. A national 5G coverage figure—or a phone’s “5G” label—does not guarantee reliable service at your address or compatibility with your chosen network.
What should I check before switching to a 5G plan?
Start with the places you regularly use your phone: home, work, your commute and frequent travel routes. Check each prospective provider’s coverage map for those locations, then compare results with the National Broadband Map only if that is the link supplied for it? No. Consult the CRTC’s 2026 Canadian Telecommunications Market Report for national context, and use carrier coverage maps and ISED’s National Broadband Map for location checks. Maps are estimates; they do not establish indoor reception, reliable service on a particular road or usable speed at a specific address.

The CRTC reported that 5G networks were available to 94.3% of Canada’s population in 2024. The same report put access at 75.2% in rural areas and 52.2% on First Nations reserves, and reported no 5G coverage in the Territories. These are population-access measures, not guarantees of signal at an individual location.
LTE remained more widely available: the CRTC reported 99.5% population access nationally in 2024, including 97.6% in rural areas, 96.4% in the Territories and 89.0% on First Nations reserves. An area without reported 5G may still have LTE service, so include LTE coverage in your comparison.

Coverage reporting is evolving. In January 2026, the CRTC announced access to more detailed service-provider, technology and speed data and launched a consultation on standardized mobile coverage reporting. Check the providers’ maps and ISED’s map, and, where possible, use the CRTC Wireless Code trial period to test reception before deciding to keep a service.
Compare the actual plans available to you
Make a side-by-side comparison of plans offered at your address. The CRTC advises checking what the rate includes, upfront and one-time charges, fees for calling features, effects on bundled services, restrictions or fees for changing features, required term and cancellation fees. Its mobile plan guidance and plan-selection resources also cover low-cost, occasional-use, talk/text/data and data-only options.

| Compare | What to check in the written offer |
|---|---|
| Coverage and reliability | Service at home, work, on your commute and on frequent rural routes; check indoors as well as outdoors where possible. |
| Total cost | Monthly plan price, device payments, upfront charges, add-ons and any remaining device balance or final payment. |
| Data and speed | Included high-speed data, what happens after the allowance is used, hotspot rules and any speed or fair-use conditions attached to “unlimited.” |
| Travel and roaming | Canada-wide features, domestic out-of-area data treatment, and international rates or travel add-ons. |
| Flexibility | Prepaid or postpaid terms, financing or contract duration, cancellation costs, eligibility conditions and number portability. |
Do not assume that a more expensive 5G tier is necessary. Match the plan’s written terms to your coverage, typical data use and travel. Prices, promotions and eligibility change; confirm the offer and all conditions with the provider before accepting it.
Will my phone work on a Canadian 5G network?
Not necessarily. A phone advertised as 5G is not guaranteed to work fully on every Canadian provider. Before buying, ask the provider to verify the exact model number and regional variant—not just the product family—for 4G/LTE, 5G and VoLTE calling, including emergency calling. Ask whether any account, SIM or device restrictions apply. The evidence here does not establish one universal band list or confirm compatibility for specific handset variants, so a generic band checklist or a manufacturer’s 5G label is not enough.

Phone compatibility checklist
- Record the exact model number and regional variant shown on the device or listing.
- Ask the intended provider to confirm that exact variant supports its LTE and 5G networks and VoLTE, including emergency calls.
- Check that the phone is unlocked and supports the SIM or eSIM arrangement you need.
- Compare the total price when buying outright with financing; read any return, trade-in or final-payment conditions.
- If keeping your current phone, give the new provider its model or IMEI and confirm compatibility and SIM status before cancelling your existing service.
Also consider 3G retirement. The CRTC warns that older phones and some older 4G devices may be affected: once a provider retires 3G, voice calls use VoLTE. A device may need replacing if it is 3G-only, uses a 3G-only SIM, lacks VoLTE or is not compatible with the provider’s LTE network. Provider timelines vary; check with the provider or consult the phone’s manual and model number. See the CRTC’s guidance on the 3G phase-out.

The CRTC says every Canadian with a mobile plan is protected by the Wireless Code. Its consumer guidance describes protections including unlocked newly purchased phones, a 15-day device return period if you are unhappy with the service (provided you have used no more than half of the monthly allowance), caps on overage and roaming charges, and cancellation without fees after two years. Read the Wireless Code consumer page for the applicable terms.

How can roaming charges affect the decision?
Domestic roaming means your phone connects to another provider’s network in Canada. Some plans may charge for data outside the local coverage area even when calls and texts are Canada-wide. International roaming can separately cost extra for calls, texts or data. Near the US border, a phone can connect to a US network unintentionally.
Ask your provider about rates, roaming add-ons and where domestic roaming applies. You can disable data roaming or manually select a network to reduce accidental connections. The CRTC’s roaming guidance describes a $100 international roaming cap per billing cycle unless you consent to more. The simplified Wireless Code specifies $50 data-overage and $100 data-roaming caps; related amendments on that page are marked effective April 13, 2027, so check the current Code wording rather than assuming future notification rules already apply.
