Before leaving a Pixel, verify five things: the destination’s exact transfer method, a current backup, access to every important account, mobile-service compatibility, and the data that must be moved manually. A phone migration is selective rather than a perfect clone. Keep the Pixel powered on and untouched until the replacement has your essential photos, contacts, messages, files, apps, authentication methods, and working phone service.
Start with the destination, not the transfer button
“Android” is not one universal migration process. The menus and copied data depend on the destination manufacturer, Android version, setup stage, transfer method, and carrier. Moving from a Pixel to another Pixel can expose different options from moving to a phone made by another Android manufacturer. Moving to an iPhone uses Apple’s Move to iOS process and has its own limits.

Identify the exact destination model and operating system before you begin. Open that manufacturer’s current transfer guide and note whether it supports a cable, wireless pairing, or both. Google’s current Pixel documentation says Pixel 8 and later can pair with an old Android phone for wireless or cable transfer, while Pixel 9 and later can add data after initial setup. Those instructions apply to transfers to supported Pixel models, not automatically to every Android phone.
Also check the destination’s free storage. Apple specifically requires the content being moved to fit on the new iPhone; the same practical rule applies to any destination. If the old phone contains more photos, videos, downloads, or chat media than the new phone can hold, decide what will be archived or moved to cloud storage before setup.

Back up the Pixel and prove you can get back into your accounts
Make a fresh backup before connecting the phones. In the Pixel’s backup settings, confirm that the latest backup completed and record its date. A backup is useful only if you can restore it, so sign in to the Google Account used for the backup and confirm that you know its password and can complete its second-factor challenge.
Prepare access to other accounts that will be needed during setup: email, password managers, banking, work or school services, travel accounts, social apps, and any account that stores cloud-synced notes or files. Google notes that a Google Account is needed to download apps, use some features, or transfer later.
Do not assume a general phone transfer carries every credential. Before starting, open each security-sensitive app and read its own migration instructions. Pay particular attention to:
- Authenticator apps and one-time-code accounts
- Passkeys and saved passwords
- Recovery codes and alternate sign-in methods
- Banking approvals, payment wallets, and identity-verification apps
- Work profiles, device certificates, VPN access, and corporate management
- Travel tickets, boarding passes, and other device-bound credentials
Keep recovery codes in a safe place that is not the Pixel you plan to erase. If an authenticator supports an export or cloud backup, complete and verify it before moving the SIM.

Make an inventory of data that matters
A short inventory prevents the most expensive kind of migration failure: discovering after a reset that an item existed only on the old phone. Check these categories individually rather than relying on a “transfer complete” message:
- Contacts, calendars, and reminders
- Camera photos, videos, screenshots, and albums
- SMS, RCS conversations, and important attachments
- Downloads, documents, recordings, and files stored in app-specific folders
- Notes and voice memos
- WhatsApp or other chat histories and media
- Passwords, passkeys, authenticator accounts, and recovery codes
- Paid apps, subscriptions, in-app purchases, and locally stored game data
- Bluetooth accessories, smart-home devices, watches, and car integrations
- Work or school data subject to an administrator’s export rules
Open a sample of each high-value category on the Pixel. A cloud icon or account label does not prove that a file is available offline or that the destination app can read it.
What usually moves from Pixel to another Android phone?
Google’s Pixel transfer guide lists the following categories for supported Android-to-Pixel setup. They illustrate both the scope and the conditions of Android migration; another manufacturer’s phone can offer a different list.

| Google Account | Included in supported setup flows; the account is also needed for restoring or downloading content. |
| Passwords and passkeys | Coverage depends on the transfer method and the apps that store them. |
| Device settings | Listed for supported Pixel transfers; exact settings vary by Android version. |
| Calendar events | Listed as transferable when included in the account or supported migration. |
| Text messages and attachments | Listed for supported flows; verify important conversations after setup. |
| Files and folders | Listed, but app-private files can require a separate export. |
| Wi-Fi login details | Listed for supported transfers; you may still need to reconnect to some networks. |
| Call history | Listed for supported Pixel transfers. |
| Photos and videos | Listed; check local files, albums, and cloud-only media separately. |
| Contacts | Listed; contacts stored only on the device or SIM deserve a separate check. |
| WhatsApp chat history | Listed for supported transfers; follow WhatsApp’s own restoration prompts. |
| Apps | Apps obtained through Google Play can transfer or be reinstalled; app data depends on developer support. |
| Audio files | Listed in supported flows; inspect folders for recordings or downloaded audio. |
| Custom-photo wallpaper | Listed for some Pixel-to-Pixel transfers. |
Google explicitly warns: “Some data stored in apps that are specific to devices from other manufacturers may not transfer.” The guide also marks recordings and home-screen layout as not transferring from another Android device to Pixel, although those categories transfer Pixel-to-Pixel. Treat that as a warning against assuming that two Android phones are interchangeable, not as a promise about every destination.

What moves from Pixel to iPhone?
Apple’s Move to iOS flow runs while the new iPhone is being set up. Apple lists these Android-to-iPhone categories:
| Category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Contacts | Supported by Move to iOS. |
| Message history and SMS | Supported; inspect key threads after setup. |
| Camera photos and videos | Supported, subject to available iPhone storage. |
| Photo albums | Supported in the documented flow. |
| Files and folders | Supported, though app-specific storage may need separate handling. |
| Accessibility and display settings | Supported categories are transferred where iOS has an equivalent. |
| Web bookmarks | Supported. |
| Mail accounts | Supported account information may be added; verify sign-in if prompted. |
| WhatsApp messages and media | Supported through the documented Move to iOS process. |
| Voice Memos | Listed by Apple as transferable. |
| Call history | Listed by Apple as transferable. |
| Calendars | Listed by Apple as transferable. |
Music, books, and PDFs require manual transfer according to Apple. Some free apps can be matched when an equivalent exists in both stores and the app supports the feature, but matched apps may still need to be downloaded from the App Store. Verify every essential app, purchase, subscription, and locally stored app file with its provider rather than treating an app icon as proof that its data arrived.
Apple documents a USB-C cable as an alternative to a wireless transfer and recommends keeping both phones connected to power and undisturbed until the process finishes. A cable can improve the connection and speed, but it does not make unsupported content transferable.
Protect phone service: SIM, eSIM, and messaging
Mobile service is a separate migration task. Ask the carrier whether the exact Pixel line and destination model support direct eSIM transfer, a carrier app, a QR code, or a physical SIM reuse. Android notes that eSIM availability depends on the phone brand and carrier. Apple says direct Android-to-iPhone eSIM transfer works only with some carriers and select compatible devices and software; otherwise the carrier activates the line or supplies a QR code. Apple’s cited support guidance was published September 18, 2026, so confirm current local compatibility rather than relying on an older checklist.

Do not remove or deactivate the Pixel’s SIM or eSIM until the replacement has been activated. On the new phone, test an outgoing call, an incoming call, one-to-one SMS, a group message, and mobile data. If any test fails, contact the carrier before resetting the Pixel.
Use this order for a low-risk switch
- Back up. Complete the Pixel backup and verify its date and account.
- Secure account access. Export or confirm authenticator data, passkeys, passwords, recovery codes, banking approvals, and work access.
- Prepare both phones. Charge them, keep them nearby, connect to stable Wi-Fi when using wireless transfer, and check destination storage.
- Start the official setup flow. Use the destination manufacturer’s current instructions. Choose cable or wireless only after confirming that both devices and ports support the selected method.
- Leave the devices alone. Do not open other apps, disconnect the cable, or let either phone shut down while the transfer is running.
- Restore what was not automatic. Reinstall required apps, sign in, download purchases, import music or PDFs, and use each app’s own chat or data-restoration process.
- Activate and test the number. Complete the SIM or eSIM step, then test calls, SMS, group messaging, and mobile data.
- Audit before erasing. Compare the inventory you made with what is present on the new phone.
- Retire the Pixel only after approval. Remove or deactivate its SIM or eSIM as appropriate, sign out where required, and factory-reset it before resale, trade-in, donation, or recycling.
Audit the replacement before you wipe the Pixel
Use the new phone for a basic real-world check instead of trusting the transfer summary. Open several recent photos and videos, search contacts, read old and new messages, open downloaded files, and check calendar events. Launch every essential app and complete a sign-in or transaction where safe. Confirm that authenticator codes or passkeys work before logging out of the old device.
Pair your watch, car, headphones, and other critical accessories. Check notification permissions, accessibility settings, backup status, and available storage. If a category is missing, keep the Pixel intact and recover that category first. The old phone is your fallback for passwords, verification prompts, and files that were not included in the migration.

If something is missing or the transfer fails
The transfer stops or never starts
Confirm both phones are charged, unlocked, nearby, and connected as the destination guide requires. Restart both devices and retry with the documented cable or wireless path. If a wireless transfer repeatedly fails, a compatible USB-C data cable may provide a more stable route; check the ports and destination instructions before buying one.

An app appears but its data is absent
Open the app’s own restore or export settings. App data can be private to the old device, encrypted, or dependent on a developer’s cloud service. Contact the app provider for purchased content, subscriptions, or records that are not visible after sign-in.
Photos or files are missing
Check whether they were stored in a cloud account, the Pixel’s Downloads folder, removable storage, or an app-private directory. Compare the destination’s free space with the size of the missing material and copy files manually when the official flow does not include them.
The new phone has no service
Do not reset the Pixel. Verify that the eSIM installation or physical SIM activation completed, check the carrier’s compatibility requirements, and request a new activation or QR code if needed. Retest calls, SMS, and mobile data after the carrier confirms the line.

Because no destination model is specified, compare phones on the traits that affect your daily use and the difficulty of the move:
- Size, weight, screen visibility, and one-handed use
- Camera behavior and the way photos are stored or backed up
- Battery life, charging method, and charging accessories
- Internal storage and expansion options
- Accessibility controls and display settings
- Length of software and security support
- Availability of essential apps and compatibility with your work or travel services
- Support for your carrier’s physical SIM or eSIM process
- Compatibility with watches, cars, headphones, and smart-home equipment
- Whether the manufacturer offers cable transfer, wireless transfer, or post-setup import
For a wired move, the only generally useful accessory is a USB-C-to-USB-C data cable when both phones support that route. Check the ports and the destination guide first; not every switch requires a cable, and a charging-only cable cannot carry data.
