A sharp rise is not, by itself, a sell signal. Before placing an order, check whether the stock has become too large a share of your portfolio, which tax lots you would sell, how much cash you may owe in tax, and whether the sale still fits your goals and risk tolerance.
You do not have to choose between doing nothing and selling everything. A partial trim, directing new money elsewhere, or selling the full position can each be sensible in the right circumstances. The correct choice depends on your allocation plan, account type, tax lots, liquidity needs and time horizon.

1. Revisit the reason you own the stock
Start with your investment plan, not the chart. Ask what job this holding is supposed to perform: long-term growth, income, diversification, or exposure to a particular industry. Then check whether your time horizon, financial circumstances, goals or ability to tolerate a loss have changed. Investor.gov identifies those factors as core allocation considerations and explains that rebalancing restores a chosen allocation after investments grow at different rates.

- Would you still buy this stock today at its current price, given its role in your plan?
- When will you need the money, if at all?
- What percentage loss in this position could you tolerate without abandoning your plan?
- Is the rally the reason you are changing your plan, or has the underlying purpose of the holding changed?
- Do you have a target maximum for one company, sector or asset class?
A price increase can change the risk of a position even when you have not purchased another share. If the stock rises faster than the rest of your portfolio, it can move well above its intended allocation.

2. Measure concentration across the whole portfolio
Calculate the stock’s current value as a percentage of your investable assets. Include taxable accounts, retirement accounts and cash earmarked for investing when that reflects how you manage the portfolio. Compare the result with your written target or maximum position size.
Look beyond the single ticker
Concentration can be hidden in funds and related holdings. Review the underlying holdings of exchange-traded funds, mutual funds and sector funds for the same company or closely related businesses. Also consider whether several positions depend on the same industry, commodity, customer group or economic factor. A stock that represents 10% directly may create a much larger practical exposure when funds hold it as well.
FINRA describes concentration risk as “the risk of amplified losses that may occur from having a large portion of your holdings in a particular investment, asset class or market segment relative to your overall portfolio.” It notes that market performance itself can make a portfolio more concentrated. Check liquidity too: a position may be hard to reduce quickly without a material price impact, particularly in thinly traded securities.
Use an allocation change, not a market prediction
Investor.gov gives a hypothetical example in which an intended 60% stock allocation grows to 80% after market appreciation. That illustration explains the mechanics of rebalancing; it is not a recommended threshold or a forecast. Your own target should come from your plan, not from a universal percentage.

3. Identify the exact shares you would sell
In a taxable account, the tax result depends on the specific lots sold. Export or record the information for every block of shares before deciding which order to place.
Record these fields for each lot
- Acquisition date
- Number of shares
- Purchase price and total cost basis
- Purchase commissions or other costs included in basis
- Whether the lot is in a taxable or tax-advantaged account
- Any broker-reported wash-sale adjustment or other basis adjustment
IRS guidance generally treats stock basis as the purchase price plus purchase costs. For covered securities, your broker may report the acquisition date, holding period, basis and wash-sale loss adjustments. Confirm that the broker’s records match your own records, especially after transfers between firms, corporate actions or reinvested dividends.
Check the holding period
For U.S. federal tax purposes, IRS Publication 550 (2025) generally treats investment property held more than one year as long-term and property held one year or less as short-term. For securities traded on an established market, the holding period ends on the trade date of the sale; do not substitute the settlement date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe date can change the character of the gain, so a lot that is only days away from passing the one-year mark may deserve separate consideration. The one-year distinction is a general rule, not a calculation of your tax rate or final bill.

Flag special situations
Employee shares, restricted stock, options, inherited shares, gifted shares and other nonstandard acquisitions can have different basis or holding-period rules. Do not assume that the ordinary purchase-date method applies. Ask a tax professional or consult the current IRS instructions when a lot came from one of these arrangements.
4. Estimate the tax and cash-flow effect
Estimate the result lot by lot instead of multiplying the total number of shares by the stock’s overall price increase. For each proposed lot, compare sale proceeds with its adjusted basis and selling costs. Then account for your other realized gains and losses and the tax facts that apply to you.
A practical worksheet
- List the shares and lots you might sell.
- Estimate proceeds using the number of shares multiplied by the expected sale price, less transaction costs.
- Subtract the adjusted basis for each lot to estimate its gain or loss.
- Classify each result as short-term or long-term using the applicable holding period.
- Combine the proposed results with gains and losses already realized during the year.
- Set aside cash for any resulting tax obligation rather than treating all sale proceeds as spendable.
This is an estimate, not a tax return. The IRS says a sizable capital gain during the year may require an estimated-tax payment during the year and provides a worksheet for estimating additional tax. Use the current tax-year IRS instructions, and obtain professional advice when the gain is large, the lots are unusual, or your overall tax situation is complicated. U.S. federal guidance does not determine state, local or non-U.S. tax outcomes.
5. Compare selling none, trimming or selling everything
Evaluate each option against the same criteria: resulting concentration, tax lots and holding periods, estimated tax, transaction costs, liquidity needs, intended use of proceeds, risk tolerance and time horizon. There is no universally correct sale size or schedule.

| Choice | When it may fit | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Sell none | The position remains within your target range and its role, time horizon and risk still fit your plan. | Whether indirect exposure through funds or related holdings makes the concentration larger than it appears. |
| Trim part of the position | The stock is overweight, but you still want exposure or need to limit the tax and portfolio disruption of a full exit. | Which lots reduce concentration most efficiently, the tax due on those lots, and where the proceeds will go. |
| Sell the full position | The holding no longer serves your plan, the concentration is unacceptable, or you need the cash for a defined purpose. | Total tax by lot, the timing of proceeds, replacement investments and the risk of losing exposure if the price continues to rise. |
Do not confuse a trim with a valuation call
A partial sale can be a risk-control decision without claiming that the stock is overvalued or that its price must fall. Conversely, holding because the price may continue rising is a forecast. Keep the allocation decision separate from an attempt to predict the next move.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Consider rebalancing without selling all the shares
Investor.gov describes several ways to restore an allocation: sell overweight assets, add to underweight assets, or direct new contributions toward underweight categories. If selling would create a large taxable gain, compare those approaches rather than assuming a complete liquidation is necessary.
Direct new money elsewhere
Future contributions, dividends or cash deposits can be directed to underweight assets. This may reduce the relative weight of the rallied stock over time, although it will not immediately lower the stock’s dollar value or its downside risk.

Sell only enough to reach a range
Instead of targeting a single exact percentage, establish a practical range around your desired allocation. A planned range can reduce frequent trading, but the range must reflect your own risk capacity and tax situation. Document the trigger and review date so the decision is not remade emotionally after every market move.
Best Value
Decide where proceeds will go
Before selling, identify whether proceeds will fund near-term spending, replenish cash reserves, pay tax, or purchase underweight assets. Leaving the money unallocated can change the portfolio’s risk just as surely as buying a new investment.
7. Check wash-sale rules only when the proposed sale is at a loss
The wash-sale check is conditional. It matters when you sell securities for a loss, not simply because you sold after a profitable rally.
IRS Schedule D instructions describe a wash sale when substantially identical securities are bought or acquired through specified transactions within 30 days before or after the loss sale. The described transactions can include certain purchases in an IRA or Roth IRA. A disallowed loss generally cannot be deducted, subject to applicable exceptions; the basis treatment can also affect later records.

If any lot is at a loss, check purchases across accounts and the full 30-day-before/after window, and retain the broker’s adjustment records.
8. Avoid common execution mistakes
- Using average cost without checking lot selection: the account’s displayed average may hide a short-term lot or a much larger gain in the shares selected for sale.
- Ignoring fund overlap: selling the individual stock may leave substantial exposure through a fund.
- Spending the gross proceeds: reserve money for estimated tax and any planned transaction costs.
- Relying on settlement date: for securities traded on an established market, the federal holding-period cutoff is generally the trade date.
- Assuming a tax-advantaged account works like a taxable account: ordinary capital-gain reporting and basis decisions may differ by account type.
- Changing the plan because of one dramatic session: use your allocation range and written criteria instead of a single day’s movement.
- Forgetting records: save confirmations, lot selections, basis adjustments and the reason for the transaction.
9. A pre-sale checklist
- Write down the stock’s intended role and your target or maximum allocation.
- Measure direct and indirect exposure across all relevant accounts.
- List the exact lots, basis, acquisition dates and account types.
- Mark lots as short-term or long-term under the applicable U.S. federal rule, while checking for special acquisition circumstances.
- Estimate proceeds, gain or loss and the possible estimated-tax effect.
- Compare selling none, trimming and selling all against concentration, taxes, costs, liquidity and time horizon.
- Choose where proceeds will be held or invested.
- If any lot would be sold at a loss, review the 30-day wash-sale window across accounts.
- Place the order with the intended tax-lot selection and keep the confirmation.
The disciplined answer after a rally is not automatically “sell.” It is to verify whether the holding still fits your plan, quantify the concentration and tax consequences, and choose the smallest action that brings the portfolio and your cash needs back in line with your objectives.
