What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do not start by translating code. Start by proving that the existing service has a specific, measured problem Rust can help solve, then decide whether a component migration is safer than replacing the whole system. A sound evaluation covers behavior, interfaces, data, operations, team capability, cost, and rollback—not just benchmark speed. Rust can reduce some memory-safety and concurrency risks, but its compiler cannot prove that a replacement preserves business rules or is ready for production.
1. Establish the case for change
A rewrite is worth serious evaluation when the current service has an important problem that a new implementation could address. Write the problem in observable terms before selecting Rust as the solution.

Describe the failure or constraint precisely
- Safety: recurring memory-safety defects, exploitable unsafe-language components, or a security exposure with a credible remediation path.
- Performance: a sustained latency, throughput, CPU, memory, or startup target miss demonstrated by measurements rather than anecdotes.
- Reliability: incidents, crashes, data corruption, or difficult-to-control failure modes that a redesign can realistically reduce.
- Concurrency: shared-state or asynchronous code whose correctness is difficult to establish and maintain.
- Maintenance: a component whose complexity, tooling, or staffing burden is materially blocking product work.
“Rust is faster” is not a business case. Microsoft’s Pragmatic Rust Guidelines recommend profiling hot paths, and the npm case study compared candidate implementations for a CPU-bound authorization workload. Your service may behave differently. A language change is an input to a solution, not the outcome itself.

Capture representative production behavior over a meaningful period. Record request-rate distributions, latency percentiles, error classes, CPU and memory utilization, startup and shutdown time, queue depth, saturation behavior, and relevant infrastructure cost. Include the workload mix and deployment environment used for each measurement. Without this baseline, a later “improvement” can be a measurement artifact.

Then test lower-risk alternatives. Profiling, algorithmic changes, a data-store fix, a redesign within the existing language, or replacing only one hot component may solve the stated problem with less behavioral risk. The available evidence does not establish a universal performance or reliability gain from Rust; the comparison must be workload-specific.
2. Map the service boundary before writing Rust
Make an inventory that another engineer could use to verify parity. A production service is more than its main request handler.
External contracts
- HTTP, RPC, message, and command-line interfaces, including versioning and content negotiation.
- Request and response schemas, serialization details, ordering guarantees, pagination, and limits.
- Authentication, authorization, tenant isolation, idempotency, and rate-limit behavior.
- Every status code, error payload, retry signal, timeout, and cancellation rule.
State and dependencies
- Databases, migrations, transaction boundaries, consistency assumptions, and connection-pool settings.
- Caches, queues, scheduled jobs, object storage, feature flags, and external APIs.
- Background workers, replay procedures, dead-letter handling, and startup ordering.
- Data formats written to durable storage or exchanged with other services.
Deployment and platform assumptions
Document operating systems, CPU architectures, container images, base libraries, TLS providers, filesystem expectations, environment variables, secrets, certificate rotation, and resource limits. Record the current build, release, and rollback process, plus every language boundary. Rust’s interoperability and FFI choices must be evaluated against these actual targets; a build that works on a developer laptop is not evidence of production support.
3. Define behavioral parity and success criteria
Separate parity from intended improvement
List behavior that must remain unchanged and behavior you intentionally want to alter. Existing tests and observed production traffic are inputs, not proof that all required behavior is covered. Create shared or differential cases that send equivalent inputs to the old and new implementations and compare outputs, side effects, timing limits, and failure handling.

Use workload-specific performance criteria
| Measure | What to compare | Qualification to record |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | p50, p95, p99, timeout rate | Workload mix, concurrency, region, and build configuration |
| Throughput | Requests or jobs completed per second | Saturation point and error behavior at and beyond the target |
| Resource use | CPU, resident memory, allocations, network and storage I/O | Container limits, autoscaling policy, and sampling method |
| Startup and recovery | Cold start, readiness, shutdown, and restart time | Cache state, data volume, and dependency availability |
| Reliability | Crash, retry, data-loss, and incident indicators | Observation window and failure-injection conditions |
Set numerical targets for your service before implementation. No source establishes a universal threshold for a successful rewrite. Compare equivalent optimized builds on representative hardware and workloads, and profile before optimizing.
4. Choose the migration shape
A full replacement is only one option. Compare approaches against the same decision criteria rather than treating “rewrite” as a binary choice.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Targeted fix in the existing service | Addresses a narrow bottleneck or defect | Usually lowest because interfaces and state remain familiar | Often easiest to roll back | The measured problem is local and does not require a new runtime |
| Incremental Rust component | Targets a bounded subsystem or hot path | Requires an adapter and cross-language contract, but limits recreated logic | Old and new implementations can often coexist | A clear boundary allows traffic or work to move in slices |
| Full service rewrite | Can address systemic design, safety, and concurrency issues together | Highest: interfaces, state handling, edge cases, and operations are recreated | Requires a deliberate parallel period and tested cutover | The existing architecture itself prevents the required outcome and the team can fund the transition |
A JetBrains article published August 10, 2026, recommends incremental expansion as generally less risky, while warning that rewrites are commonly underestimated. That is guidance, not a guarantee; architecture and traffic shape determine whether a component can be isolated.

5. Check Rust-specific implementation risks
Tooling, editions, and generated code
Rust’s edition migration tools can automate some source changes, but the official Edition Guide notes limits involving documentation tests, generated code, macros, and projects built under multiple configurations. Those are edition-migration examples, yet they illustrate a broader point: tooling cannot substitute for coverage. Test every feature combination, build script, macro expansion, documentation example, and target used by the service.
Unsafe code and FFI
Inventory every unsafe block and foreign-function interface. Define ownership, lifetimes, thread-safety, error translation, ABI, and shutdown rules at each boundary. Review whether a dependency’s safety assumptions are sound for your usage, and isolate unsafe code so it can be audited and tested independently. A compiling FFI layer does not prove that pointers, callbacks, or resource handles are used correctly.
Asynchronous and concurrent behavior
Choose an async runtime and execution model deliberately. Check cancellation, back-pressure, bounded queues, task leaks, lock ordering, blocking work on async workers, and shutdown behavior. Exercise overload and dependency slowness, not only normal traffic. The type system can prevent classes of mistakes, but it cannot decide whether a retry policy amplifies an outage or whether a queue should be dropped.

Errors, panics, and observability
Define which errors are returned, retried, converted to client responses, or treated as fatal. Decide whether a panic terminates the process, is caught at a boundary, or triggers supervisor restart, and test the resulting behavior. Microsoft’s checklist states, “Production code uses telemetry, not println.” Emit structured logs, metrics, and traces through the service’s operational system, with correlation identifiers and sensitive-data controls. Measure telemetry overhead under load.

Dependencies and reproducible builds
Review dependency maintenance, licenses, advisories, transitive additions, feature flags, and supply-chain controls. Pin and reproduce builds, retain artifact provenance, and verify that cross-compilation and release binaries are deterministic enough for your incident and audit needs. Confirm that every required target platform and native library is supported before committing to a rollout date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Budget the complete lifecycle and team
Estimate more than coding. Include compatibility adapters, parallel operation, test-data generation, load testing, deployment changes, dashboards, runbooks, security review, training, code-review capacity, incident response, hiring, and long-term maintenance. Also count the opportunity cost of delaying other work.
Team readiness is a production requirement. Identify who can review ownership and concurrency decisions, debug compiler and runtime failures, update dependencies, respond during an incident, and maintain the service years later. If only one person can operate the code, the project has a continuity risk even when the implementation is technically sound.

The Rust Foundation’s 2019 Rust at npm whitepaper reports that npm’s Node.js authorization-service reimplementation took about one hour, the Go version two days, and the Rust version about one week including ramp-up and implementation. npm compared Node.js, Go, and Rust for a CPU-bound authorization service, seeking memory safety, a standalone deployable binary, and consistent performance over JavaScript; the paper says the Rust service reached production. These are one team’s reported durations for one bounded service, not a benchmark or a forecast for yours.
Best Value
The same case study includes npm engineer Chris Dickinson saying, “I wouldn’t trust myself to write a C++ HTTP application and expose it to the web,”. That explains his judgment in that project; it is not a universal conclusion about every language or engineer.
7. Design a reversible rollout
- Freeze the contract. Version schemas and document compatibility, error behavior, data ownership, and feature flags.
- Build a shared test corpus. Run identical functional, edge-case, property, and failure tests against both implementations.
- Compile and scan every target. Test release profiles, supported architectures, native dependencies, generated code, and documentation tests.
- Use staging with production-shaped data. Exercise realistic concurrency, dependency failures, migrations, and recovery procedures without exposing sensitive data.
- Shadow or mirror traffic where safe. Compare decisions and side effects without allowing the candidate to mutate authoritative state unless the test explicitly permits it.
- Canary a small slice. Route a bounded percentage, tenant set, region, or queue partition while keeping the old implementation available.
- Monitor agreed measures. Watch correctness diffs, latency distributions, saturation, error classes, resource use, and business-level outcomes after each change.
- Promote or roll back deliberately. Record the exact artifact, source commit, configuration, and migration state in each environment. Rehearse the switch back before increasing exposure.
GOV.UK service guidance recommends frequent, small, auditable deployments because they make diagnosis and rollback easier. Whether the cutover must be zero-downtime depends on the service’s downtime cost and architecture; do not promise it without testing connection draining, in-flight requests, and state transitions.
8. Plan data and rollback separately
Code rollback is not enough if the new version changes durable state. For every schema or format change, specify forward and backward compatibility, migration order, backup and restore verification, and what happens to writes made during a partial rollout. Prefer expand-and-contract changes when both versions must run concurrently. Define who can stop traffic, restore data, disable a feature flag, or revert an artifact, and write those actions into the incident runbook.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches9. Common reasons rewrites fail
- The goal is a language preference. Without a measured problem and target, the team cannot tell whether the project succeeded.
- Tests describe only the happy path. Hidden authorization, retry, ordering, and malformed-input behavior appears after cutover.
- Benchmarks use toy workloads. Results from synthetic requests do not predict tail latency, memory pressure, or dependency contention in production.
- Adapters hide semantic differences. A type-compatible interface can still change timeouts, error codes, ordering, or transaction boundaries.
- Operations arrive late. Missing dashboards, alerts, runbooks, build provenance, or target support turns a correct binary into an unsafe release.
- Rollback is treated as a button. Incompatible data writes, one-way migrations, or changed queue semantics can make reversal impossible.
- Knowledge is concentrated. A small team may deliver the rewrite but lack reviewers and on-call coverage afterward.
10. A practical go/no-go review
| Question | Evidence required before approval | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Is the problem important? | Baseline measurements, incident history, or a documented safety exposure | No observable problem or no credible Rust-related mechanism |
| Is the boundary understood? | Interface, state, dependency, platform, and deployment inventory | Unknown data ownership or undocumented side effects |
| Can parity be tested? | Shared cases, representative fixtures, differential comparisons, and failure tests | Critical behavior has no oracle or test plan |
| Can the team operate it? | Reviewers, on-call owners, training plan, telemetry, and runbooks | No sustainable support coverage |
| Can users be protected? | Staging results, canary design, artifact traceability, and rehearsed rollback | Irreversible data or traffic change without recovery |
| Is the investment justified? | Lifecycle estimate, alternatives considered, and service-specific success targets | Benefits are assumptions about Rust rather than measured outcomes |
Approve a full rewrite only when the evidence shows that narrower fixes or an incremental component cannot deliver the required outcome at acceptable risk. Otherwise, start with the smallest reversible change that tests the central hypothesis.
