What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before uninstalling or replacing any Google app, map where your data is stored, verify that it can move to the new phone, test whether essential apps need Google Play services, and check availability for your country and handset. Replacing an app’s interface does not automatically remove the Google account, sync system, or background service that other apps rely on.
Start with an inventory, not an uninstall
Make a list of the functions you actually use on the phone: email, contacts, calendar, photos, maps, messaging, app installation, authentication codes, backups, and device finding. For each function, record the account that currently owns the data and where you want that data to live after the change.

Google’s new-device transfer guidance says contacts saved in a Google Account appear on a new Android phone after you sign in, and Calendar events appear when you open the Calendar app. That confirms Google-account synchronization; it does not prove that contacts stored only on the old phone, SIM, another provider, or inside an app’s private database will transfer in the same way.

| Function | Questions to answer before changing apps | Safer preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Is mail on a Google Account, another provider, or only cached in the old app? Do you know the password and any two-step verification method? | Sign in to the provider’s web interface and confirm recent messages, folders, contacts, and recovery options are present. | |
| Contacts | Which entries are saved to a Google Account, the handset, a SIM, or another account? Are photos, labels, and notes important? | Check the account selected for contact storage and export or copy locally stored entries before removing the old app. |
| Calendar | Are events synchronized to a Google Account or another calendar service? Do you have shared calendars and recurring events? | Open the account’s web calendar and verify future events, reminders, and shared-calendar access. |
| Photos and videos | Are originals online, on local storage, an SD card, or inside a device folder excluded from backup? | Confirm that important originals can be downloaded or copied independently of the photo app you plan to replace. |
| Maps and saved places | Are saved locations tied to a Google Account, another mapping account, or only stored in the app? | Check whether the service offers an export or web access, and record places you cannot afford to lose. |
| Messages | Are conversations handled by SMS/RCS, an end-to-end encrypted service, or an app-specific cloud backup? | Read the service’s transfer instructions and verify that the new device can receive verification messages. |
| Authentication | Which accounts use an authenticator, passkeys, security keys, or push approval? Is the old phone required to approve sign-in? | Add a second recovery method or backup codes before disabling or wiping the old device. |
| Backups and device finding | Which account performs device backup and remote-finding functions? Does the replacement provide an equivalent service? | Complete a current backup, test account recovery, and keep the old phone usable until the new setup is proven. |
Do not treat an app icon as the data source. A replacement mail, calendar, or contacts interface may still connect to the same Google Account, while a different account provider may require a separate migration. Conversely, deleting a visible Google app does not by itself delete account data or disable every Google component.

Verify backup and transfer constraints
Complete the transfer while both phones are available and before changing accounts or removing applications. Google’s backup guidance warns that a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version. It also warns that an older-version new phone can produce an incomplete transfer. In Google’s wording: “If your new device is on an older Android version than your previous device, it may result in an incomplete data transfer.”
Use this pre-change sequence
- Record both Android versions. On each phone, open the device’s Settings and look for the Android version entry. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so use Settings search if necessary.
- Update the new phone first. Install available system updates and restart. A new phone that is still on an older release may not accept every item from a newer phone’s backup.
- Review backup contents. In Settings, search for “backup” and inspect the account, last-backup time, and categories included. The exact screen differs by Android edition and phone maker.
- Run a fresh backup on the old phone. Keep it connected to power and Wi-Fi until the reported backup completes. A backup timestamp alone does not establish that every app’s private data is included.
- Transfer before pruning. Use the setup wizard’s cable, wireless, or manufacturer-supported transfer method while the old phone is intact. Do not factory-reset it immediately after the wizard finishes.
- Validate the result. Open contacts, calendar, photos, messages, authentication tools, and other critical apps on the new phone. Check recent records, not just whether the app launches.
- Keep an independent copy. Export irreplaceable contacts, copy local photos and documents, and retain recovery codes. These protect against an app-specific backup omission.
A transfer can be incomplete even when the setup screen reports success. Locally stored contacts, files in unusual folders, encrypted app databases, and data belonging to a provider that the new phone does not support may need separate handling. The official guidance establishes Google-account sync behavior, not a universal migration guarantee for every Android app.
Audit dependencies on Google Play services
Google Play services is a background component, separate from the user-facing apps such as Gmail or Maps. An alternative interface can therefore leave the underlying service dependency unchanged. Removing or disabling Play services may affect an unrelated app that uses Google APIs for sign-in, location, maps, notifications, payments, or other features.

Google’s developer documentation says apps should check that Google Play services is present before calling Google APIs or enabling features that require it. The Firebase Android setup documentation gives a concrete example: Firebase SDKs that depend on Play services require those services on the device.
Classify your essential apps
- Must-work apps: banking, work access, health services, transport, two-factor authentication, emergency communication, and any app needed to receive a sign-in code.
- Convenience apps: streaming, shopping, games, and services you can use through a browser if necessary.
- System-dependent functions: push notifications, location-based features, casting, contactless payments, and device-management tools. Their behavior can depend on both the app and the phone’s software build.
For each must-work app, check its current help page or support team for the exact Android version, handset certification, and Play-services requirement. Install it on the new phone before changing the old phone. Sign in, receive a notification, complete a test transaction when appropriate, and verify location or payment features that you actually use.
Recognize dependency symptoms
| Observed problem | What it may indicate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The app refuses to start or reports missing services | It may require Google Play services or a certified device environment. | Read the app’s requirements and confirm Play services is installed and current. |
| Sign-in works but notifications do not arrive | Push delivery may use a Play-services-dependent component, battery restrictions, or the app’s own account settings. | Test while connected, review notification permissions, and ask the app provider whether Play services is required. |
| Maps, location, or nearby-device features fail | The app may call Google APIs even though its visible interface is not a Google app. | Check the developer’s requirements and test the exact feature rather than only opening the app. |
| In-app payments or verification fail | Payment, integrity, or authentication checks may depend on Play services or device certification. | Complete a non-critical test and retain another way to access the account. |
Do not infer compatibility from the app’s name. A non-Google app can depend on Google APIs, and a Google-branded app can sometimes be replaced without removing Play services. The only reliable answer for a critical feature is a current requirement from the app developer plus a hands-on test on your exact phone.

Check country, handset, and Android-version availability
Packages and requirements vary by market. Google’s Google Mobile Services resource directs readers to country-specific information about available applications and required GMS apps. Use it as a starting point, then confirm what is actually preinstalled or downloadable on your model.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the phone’s exact model, regional variant, carrier software, and Android release.
- Check the country in which the phone will be used, not only the country where it was purchased.
- Review the GMS applications and requirements listed for that market.
- Open the relevant app store or the developer’s official support page while signed in on the new phone. Availability can differ from a web search result.
- Test registration, updates, notifications, location, payments, and account recovery from the intended country and network.
There is no evidence that one replacement works across all countries, carriers, manufacturers, and Android versions. Regional licensing, local payment systems, carrier configuration, and certification can change the result. Treat a replacement as compatible only after the functions you need work on your particular handset.

Level 1: Replace a user interface
You install another mail, calendar, browser, gallery, keyboard, or navigation app while leaving the phone’s accounts and system services intact. This is the lowest-risk approach. Confirm where the new app stores data, whether it can access existing accounts, and how you will export that data if you switch again.
Level 2: Change the account or cloud provider
You move contacts, mail, calendars, files, or photos to a different provider. This is a data-migration project, not merely an app swap. Verify imports, shared items, recurring events, labels, metadata, and recovery methods. Keep the original account available until you have checked the new copy and any third-party sign-ins that still use the old address.
Level 3: Use a Google-reduced Android distribution
An alternative Android distribution can reduce integration with Google services, but it changes the compatibility baseline for the whole phone. Privacy Guides describes alternative distributions as an option while noting that some apps and even system functions rely on Play services. Read its current Android guidance, then check every critical app before committing. This is an operating-system decision, not a safe shortcut for replacing one icon.

Compare candidates using the same questions
| Criterion | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Task coverage | Does it handle the exact mail, contact, calendar, photo, map, message, or authentication function you need? |
| Account and sync | Can it use your existing account, or must you migrate data to a new provider? |
| Play-services requirement | Do core features, notifications, payments, location, or sign-in require Google Play services? |
| Local availability | Is it offered for your country, carrier, handset model, and Android version? |
| Exit path | Can you export data in a documented format and restore access if you change phones again? |
Move in stages and keep a recovery route
A staged change limits the damage if one dependency is missed.
- Prepare recovery. Confirm passwords, backup codes, a second authentication method, and access to the old phone.
- Copy and verify data. Complete the Android transfer, then inspect records and files in each critical category.
- Install one replacement at a time. Start with a low-risk interface app. Use it for real tasks before changing the next category.
- Test integrations. Trigger a notification, open a shared calendar, use location, and authenticate to essential services.
- Document what changed. Note the account used, export format, permissions, and recovery path for each replacement.
- Delay irreversible actions. Do not remove the original account, wipe the old phone, or disable system services until the new workflow has survived several normal days.
Troubleshoot before rolling back
Contacts or events are missing
Check whether the missing items were stored locally or under a different account. Sign in to the original account on the web, enable that account in the new app, and look for an export from the old phone. Do not assume that reinstalling a different contacts or calendar interface will recreate data that was never synchronized.
The transfer stopped or produced an incomplete result
Compare Android versions, update the new phone, rerun the transfer while both devices are charged, and copy local files separately. A higher-version backup cannot be restored to a lower-version phone, so an older new device may require an update or manual export.
An essential app breaks after a system change
Restore the previous configuration if possible, then check the app provider’s requirements for Play services, certification, Android version, and regional availability. Keep a browser-based or alternate access method for accounts that support one. A successful launch is not enough; test the function that matters, such as push approval or payment.
You cannot sign in after removing an old app
Use the recovery method prepared before migration. The account may be independent of the old interface, but the old phone could have been the only trusted authenticator. Re-enable the original app or account temporarily if that is the provider’s documented recovery route.
Quick Recap
Final pre-change checklist
- Every important data type has an identified owner and storage location.
- Both phones’ Android versions are recorded, and the new phone is updated.
- A current backup is complete, and irreplaceable local files have an independent copy.
- Contacts, calendar events, photos, messages, and authentication methods were checked on the new phone.
- Critical apps were tested for sign-in, notifications, location, payments, and other real functions.
- Google Play services requirements were checked instead of inferred from an app’s name.
- Country, carrier, handset model, and Android-version availability were verified.
- An export and recovery route exists for every replacement.
- The old phone and original accounts remain available until the new setup is reliable.
