Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before replacing Files by Google, inventory the jobs you actually use, then test each one in the proposed app on your phone. Check cleanup, local browsing and search, file moves and copies, SD-card access, USB storage, and any private files in Safe folder. Compatibility is not just an Android-version number: storage permissions, the way your SD card is formatted, your phone’s USB port and the candidate app’s feature set all matter.
Handle Safe folder separately. Its contents are intentionally hidden from normal searches and third-party apps. Google says a forgotten PIN or pattern blocks access, resetting the folder permanently deletes its files, and files inside cannot be shared or backed up to Google Drive from that feature. Do not uninstall, clear app data, or reset Safe folder until you have a supported plan for every file you need.

Start with an inventory, not an app download
A replacement is suitable only if it covers your real workflow. For three or four days, note every task for which you open Files by Google. Include occasional jobs, because USB and SD-card failures often appear only when you need them.
- Do you use cleanup suggestions for temporary files, duplicates, screenshots, recommended files, or unused apps?
- Do you browse folders, search by name, rename items, and open files without another app first requesting a document?
- Do you copy or move files between internal storage, folders, an SD card, and a USB drive?
- Do you rely on Safe folder for private files?
- Do you use the app as a general manager, or only as the document picker that appears when another app asks you to choose a file?
Mark each task as essential, occasional, or irrelevant. A candidate that replaces browsing but lacks removable-storage support may be fine for one person and unusable for another. Keep representative files—such as a photograph, a video, a PDF, and a folder containing several items—for later testing. Use copies for destructive tests.

Confirm Android and app compatibility
Know the two different support floors
Google’s general Files by Google guide describes the app as working on Android 8.0 and later. Google’s USB-storage help describes USB access on Android 7.0 and later. These statements describe documented support for Files by Google, not a promise that every alternative app supports the same Android releases. Check the Android version in your phone’s system settings and compare it with the replacement’s stated minimum version.
Do not treat the minimum version as a complete compatibility verdict. Manufacturers can change permission behavior, storage locations, and removable-media handling in their Android builds. An app that installs successfully may still lack access to a particular folder or drive. Test on the actual phone, with its current Android build and security settings.
Check permissions without granting more than necessary
During the first run, record which storage permissions the candidate requests and what it can see after you grant them. A document picker can be allowed to one file or one directory while a full manager may need broader access for routine organization. If the app cannot display a location you use, verify whether Android’s permission dialog offers that location and whether the app supports the required document provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCompare cleanup behavior and deletion safeguards
Identify what the replacement can suggest
Files by Google documents cleanup suggestions for temporary files, duplicate or recommended files, screenshots, and unused apps. Compare the candidate against that list rather than relying on a generic “cleaner” label. Some tools merely show storage usage; others propose items for review; some may delete immediately.
For every cleanup category, determine whether you can inspect the proposed items individually, exclude a file, and undo an action. Google warns that files deleted or junk cleared in Files by Google are permanently deleted. Treat an alternative’s cleanup operation as destructive unless its documentation explicitly provides a recoverable trash or undo path.

Run a safe cleanup test
- Create or select a disposable test file and a duplicate in a test folder.
- Open the candidate’s cleanup feature and identify whether those files are proposed.
- Check the preview, selection controls, and confirmation wording.
- Perform the action only on the disposable copies, then verify where the files went and whether recovery is possible.
Repeat the test after an app update if cleanup behavior changes. A manager that is excellent for browsing may still be a poor replacement if its deletion controls are too broad for your habits.
Verify browsing, search, and everyday organization
Test real folders and file types
A full replacement should let you open locations you routinely use, search for known filenames, rename items, and move or copy them to another folder. Test internal storage locations and several file types, not just the Downloads view. Include a file created by another app, because some apps store data in locations that are not presented like ordinary user folders.

Check search results for files in nested folders and confirm that a renamed file is found under its new name. Test copying and moving separately: a move should remove the source only after the destination is verified, while a copy should leave the source intact. Confirm that the app reports an error rather than silently skipping an item when a destination lacks space or permission.
Distinguish a manager from a picker
Android’s Storage Access Framework provides a system document picker. It can show documents from available providers, including built-in Downloads, Images, and Videos providers, plus providers supplied by storage services. A picker is useful when an app asks you to select a document or grant access to a directory, but it is not documented as a complete file-manager replacement.
The picker does not, on the evidence available here, provide Files by Google’s cleanup suggestions or Safe folder. It may also expose only the locations and operations that the requesting app is allowed to use. If your normal workflow is selecting an attachment, the picker may be enough. If you organize folders, clean storage, or move data between devices, test a full manager instead.

Test SD-card support before switching
Files by Google documents moving or copying files to an SD card. The result depends on the phone, card, Android build, and card configuration. Google notes that a card formatted as internal storage may not appear as an SD card in Files by Google. A replacement can therefore fail even when the card itself works normally.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Insert the card and confirm that the phone recognizes it in system storage settings.
- In the candidate app, locate the card and open a representative folder.
- Copy a test photo to the card, open it from the card, and copy it back.
- Move a disposable file, confirm the destination, and verify that the original is removed only after the move succeeds.
- Test a folder containing several files and one file type you use frequently.
If the card is configured as internal storage, do not assume another app can treat it as removable media. Check the phone maker’s storage description and the candidate’s documentation before changing the card’s format; reformatting can erase its contents.
Test USB storage with your actual phone and drive
Files by Google documents browsing and managing USB storage, including copying, moving, deleting, and renaming. Android’s document framework also supports transient USB-storage providers that appear when a drive is connected. Neither description guarantees that a particular flash drive, adapter, connector, or phone port will work.
Use a non-destructive USB test
- Charge the phone adequately and connect the drive using the connector or adapter your phone supports.
- Wait for Android to expose the drive, then open it in the candidate app rather than assuming it is mounted.
- Browse a folder and open a test file.
- Copy a file from the phone to the drive, eject or disconnect it safely if the phone provides that control, reconnect it, and verify the copy.
- Copy a file back, then test rename and delete only on disposable files.
If the drive does not appear, isolate the variables: try the same drive in Files by Google, try another known-good drive, and check the phone’s port and connector. A failure in one app does not prove the drive is incompatible, and success in Files by Google does not prove that another app has implemented USB access.
Treat Safe folder as a separate migration project
Safe folder is not an ordinary directory. Google says its files do not appear in search results or categories and cannot be opened by third-party apps. Sharing and Google Drive backup are unavailable from inside Safe folder. A replacement file manager should not be expected to import its contents, lock, or recovery behavior.

Understand the access and loss risks
- Google’s exact warning is: “If you forget your PIN or Pattern, you can’t access your files.”
- Resetting Safe folder permanently loses the files stored there.
- Clearing storage or cache with another app can put the contents at risk.
- Copying encrypted Safe folder files from an old phone to a new phone is not a supported migration shortcut.
- The lock is not an absolute guarantee: Google cautions that someone with unauthorized access to the phone’s internal storage may potentially access the files.
Move needed files through supported actions
Before changing file managers, unlock Safe folder with the credentials you still know and use its supported in-app flow to move files out to a location you can verify. Then open the destination with the candidate manager and confirm the files, names, and formats. Do not use a third-party browser to hunt for the encrypted data; it is deliberately hidden.
- List the Safe folder files you must keep, including files that are easy to overlook because they are absent from normal categories.
- Unlock Safe folder using the current PIN or pattern.
- Move or export the required files using the feature’s own controls to a normal, accessible location.
- Open the destination in the replacement manager and verify representative files.
- Keep the Safe folder credentials until you have finished checking every required file.
Do not reset Safe folder merely because the replacement cannot see it. Reset is a deletion operation, not an export mechanism.
Use a side-by-side acceptance checklist
Install the candidate without deleting Files by Google first. Score it against your inventory using the same files and storage devices. The following matrix separates capabilities that are often confused.
| Capability to check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Android support | Candidate’s stated minimum version and behavior on your phone’s current build | Installation does not guarantee storage or provider compatibility |
| Cleanup | Temporary files, duplicates, screenshots, recommended files, unused apps; review and recovery controls | Some tools suggest items while others delete immediately |
| Browse and search | Internal folders, nested results, rename, common file types | A picker view may not provide general management |
| Copy and move | Separate tests between folders and storage locations, with error reporting | Silent skips or permission failures can lose track of data |
| SD card | Card visibility, read/write operations, and behavior when formatted as internal storage | Support varies by device and card setup |
| USB | Drive detection, open, copy, move, rename, delete, and reconnect verification | Phone, port, connector, drive, and Android build all affect results |
| Private files | Safe folder access, export path, credentials, and recovery limits | Safe folder is not a normal third-party-accessible folder |
| Tool type | Full manager versus system document picker | They solve different jobs |
Decide when it is safe to remove the old app
Keep Files by Google installed while you complete the tests. Remove or disable it only after you have verified every essential task and confirmed that files moved from Safe folder are present in ordinary storage. If you use USB or SD cards only occasionally, perform one final test with the exact accessory and card you carry.
Before uninstalling, record the candidate’s permission state and where it stores any app-specific settings. Do not assume that uninstalling a manager copies or converts private data. If a required feature fails, retain Files by Google for that task and use the alternative only for the functions it handles reliably.

Common failure modes and practical responses
The replacement sees Downloads but not another folder
Check whether Android’s permission dialog granted access to that directory and whether the location is managed by a document provider. If the app is only a picker, its limited view may be expected. Use Files by Google or another full manager for the broader task until the candidate documents support.
The SD card is missing
Confirm the card in system storage settings and check whether it was formatted as internal storage. Test the card in Files by Google, then consult the candidate’s support information for that Android build. Do not reformat while files remain on the card.
USB works in one app but not the other
Reconnect the drive, try a known-good connector, and check whether Android presents a USB provider. If only one manager can perform the required operations, keep that manager for USB work rather than treating the result as a problem with the drive alone.
Recommended Free Tools
Safe folder contents cannot be found
That behavior is expected: Safe folder contents are excluded from normal search and categories and are not available to third-party apps. Unlock the folder and move required files out through its own controls. Never reset it to make the files appear.
Make the final choice by task coverage
Replace Files by Google only when the candidate passes the tasks you marked essential, not because it has a cleaner interface or a different home screen. A system picker can be sufficient for occasional document selection; a full manager is needed for regular cleanup, browsing, organization, SD-card work, or USB transfers. Safe folder remains a separate security and migration decision, with no assumption that another manager can read or recover it.
