Do not assume an existing wired doorbell can power any smart replacement. Before buying, identify the exact doorbell model and regional version, read the existing transformer’s AC voltage and VA rating, confirm how the indoor chime is handled, and determine whether the wiring is part of an intercom or gate-control system. If any of those facts are unclear, stop and have a qualified electrician or installer assess the circuit.
Why a wired-to-smart swap is not automatically compatible
A traditional doorbell circuit is usually a low-voltage system, but “wired smart doorbell” is not one universal electrical standard. Different products accept different AC voltage ranges, require different transformer capacity, and handle an indoor mechanical or digital chime in different ways. Regional versions of the same product can also have different requirements.

Compatibility therefore depends on the combination of the selected model, its market, your transformer, the chime arrangement and the type of wiring in the wall. The title alone cannot establish whether a particular home will work. Treat manufacturer installation instructions for the exact model and country as the final authority.
1. Identify the exact doorbell model and market
Start with the product’s full name, generation and regional version, not just a family name such as “wired video doorbell.” Manufacturer tables may distinguish wired and battery models, generations and North American versus global installations.

What to record before shopping
- Full model name and generation.
- Whether it is sold as wired-only, battery-assisted or dual-power.
- Your installation country and local electrical system.
- The manufacturer’s stated AC voltage range.
- The required minimum and permitted VA rating.
- Whether a chime connector, power kit, resistor or bypass is supplied.
- Whether mechanical, digital or no indoor chime is supported.
- Any exclusions for intercom, gate-control or integrated building systems.
Save the current installation guide before purchase. Requirements can change, and an older web page or a guide for another country may not apply to your unit.
2. Read the transformer’s voltage and VA rating
The transformer converts household mains electricity to the low-voltage AC used by the doorbell circuit. Its label normally shows an output voltage, such as 16 V AC or 24 V AC, and a power capacity in VA (volt-amperes). A smart doorbell must be within the specified voltage range and have enough VA capacity for the doorbell and any chime load.
Use both numbers. A transformer with an acceptable voltage but insufficient VA can cause resets, missed motion events, chime problems or a doorbell that never completes setup. A higher VA figure is not automatically safe if the voltage is outside the product’s permitted range.

These figures are examples, not a universal specification. They show why a transformer that works for one product may be unsuitable for another. Compare the label on your transformer with the exact local manual, including the model number and any chime-related allowance.
Where the transformer may be hidden
It is often not behind the exterior button. Google Nest Help identifies common locations inside or beside the indoor chime box, near the breaker or fuse box, and in a basement or crawl space. Some homes have a transformer mounted on a junction box or in another service area.

Photograph the label so you can read the output voltage and VA rating while comparing products. If the label is missing, damaged or inaccessible, do not guess from the age of the house or the appearance of the doorbell.
3. Confirm what happens to the indoor chime
An existing chime is part of the circuit, not merely an accessory. A smart doorbell may need to keep the circuit powered continuously, may require a supplied connector, or may require the original chime to be removed from the circuit.
When a connector is required
Google says the cited wired Nest models must use the included chime connector. The connector provides constant power to the doorbell and protects the chime. Leaving it out can produce unreliable operation or an installation that does not match the manufacturer’s wiring diagram.
When the original chime must be bypassed
The cited US eufy wired instructions say that the wired video doorbell does not work with the original chime and direct the installer to bypass it. In that arrangement, the old indoor bell will not be the device that announces a visitor. The manufacturer may instead support an app alert, a separate compatible chime or another approved accessory.
Mechanical and digital chimes are different
A mechanical chime uses a physical striker and coils; a digital chime uses electronics and may need a specific adapter or setting. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that the old chime has two wires. Look for an explicit statement covering your chime type, and check whether the guide requires a setting in the doorbell app after wiring.

4. Check for intercom, gate-control or integrated wiring
Apartment intercoms, gate-entry panels and other integrated systems can look like ordinary doorbell wiring while carrying different power and signaling. Google says intercom, gate-control and other integrated systems typically do not work with Nest doorbells. The cited eufy guidance likewise says its wired video doorbell does not work with existing intercom power and signal systems.
Some instructions describe reusing the cable only after the old intercom function is permanently abandoned and the wiring is connected exactly as directed. That is not the same as preserving intercom operation. If the button opens a shared entrance, rings multiple units or connects to a handset, identify the system first and ask a qualified installer whether a compatible retrofit exists.
5. Verify uncertain voltage without creating an electrical hazard
Google Nest Help says the most accurate way to check compatibility is to measure the voltage on the doorbell wires. A multimeter measurement is more reliable than guessing from a transformer label, especially when the label is hidden or the circuit has been modified.
Voltage checks involve exposed conductors and can be dangerous if the wrong circuit is touched. Arlo’s guidance instructs users to turn off doorbell power at the circuit breaker and recommends contacting an electrician when wiring help is needed. Follow the chosen model’s safety procedure exactly; do not improvise a test sequence from a generic video.
Use a professional assessment when any of these apply
- You cannot locate or read the transformer label.
- The measured voltage does not match the label or changes unexpectedly.
- The wiring is part of an intercom, access-control or shared-building system.
- There are more wires than the selected doorbell diagram shows, unexplained splices or signs of overheating.
- You are not confident isolating the correct breaker or handling low-voltage conductors near mains wiring.
- The product requires a transformer upgrade or a new cable route.
6. Decide whether a transformer upgrade is actually needed
An upgrade is conditional, not a standard part of every smart-doorbell purchase. Google notes that some homes may need one, and the cited eufy guidance warns that an existing transformer may not supply enough power for its wired product.

Replace the transformer only after checking the target model’s voltage range, VA requirement, chime arrangement and regional instructions. A suitable replacement must also fit the existing enclosure and wiring method and be installed safely. Do not buy a generic “smart doorbell transformer” based only on its marketing label.
A transformer upgrade is more likely when
- The existing output voltage is below or above the doorbell’s allowed range.
- The VA rating is below the model’s minimum, especially when a chime remains connected.
- The doorbell reboots, drops offline or fails to power up after correct wiring.
- The manufacturer specifically lists an upgraded transformer for your installation.
- The old transformer is damaged, noisy, hot or otherwise shows signs of failure.
Have a licensed electrician install or replace a transformer when the work requires opening mains enclosures, turning off the main supply or altering fixed wiring. The cited eufy instructions specifically direct uncomfortable users to turn off main power and hire a licensed electrician.
Compare candidate doorbells on the compatibility points that matter
When two products appear similar, compare their installation requirements before comparing cameras or subscription features. Put the following information side by side:

If the existing wired circuit is unsuitable
You still have options, but each is model-specific. A battery-powered doorbell can avoid dependence on the old transformer and chime, provided the mounting location and wireless network are suitable. A plug-in indoor power adapter may be available for some products. Google describes battery and indoor power-adapter alternatives for certain incompatible wired setups.

Installation-day checklist
- Write down the exact doorbell model, generation and market version.
- Download the current local installation guide.
- Locate and photograph the transformer label, recording AC voltage and VA.
- Identify the indoor chime as mechanical, digital, absent or part of an intercom.
- Check whether the guide requires a chime connector, power kit or bypass.
- Inspect for gate-control, intercom or other integrated wiring.
- Resolve any voltage uncertainty using the manufacturer’s method or a qualified electrician.
- Buy a transformer only if the documented requirements show that the existing one is unsuitable.
- Turn off power as directed before touching wiring, and verify the circuit is de-energized where the instructions require it.
- After installation, test live video, motion events, two-way audio, the indoor chime and any existing doorbell function before closing the wall or junction box.
Common failure symptoms and what they usually indicate
The doorbell will not power on
Recheck the transformer voltage, the circuit breaker and the model’s required connector or bypass. If the voltage is absent or outside the allowed range, stop and have the circuit assessed.
The doorbell repeatedly reboots or goes offline
Insufficient VA capacity, excessive wiring resistance, a loose connection or an unsupported chime load can cause unstable power. Compare the measured circuit with the model’s requirements rather than adding accessories at random.
The indoor chime stays silent
The selected product may require a connector, a digital-chime setting or a bypass that intentionally disables the original bell. Follow the exact chime section of the manual.
The old intercom or gate no longer works
A consumer smart doorbell may not be able to preserve the original signaling system. Disconnecting or repurposing those wires can affect shared access equipment, so involve the building manager or a qualified installer before making changes.
What a safe purchase decision looks like
You are ready to order when the exact model and region are known, the transformer’s AC voltage and VA satisfy the manual, the chime instructions are clear, and the wiring is a dedicated doorbell circuit rather than an unidentified integrated system. If one of those answers is missing, the cheapest path is usually to resolve the uncertainty first—not to guess at a transformer or assume the old chime will work.
