Before releasing an AI-assisted podcast, run five separate checks: identify every use of AI and every destination; disclose synthetic audio or video where the platform requires it; obtain permission for recognizable voices, faces and identities; clear rights for every script, recording, image and sample; and review the episode for misleading claims, fabricated events and advertising disclosures. A show can pass one platform’s upload screen and still violate another platform’s policy or a person’s rights.
Use the workflow below as a release gate. It distinguishes Apple Podcasts’ explicit AI-disclosure rule, Spotify’s narrower impersonation restriction, YouTube’s video-only altered-content process, and U.S. advertising and copyright guidance. Platform policies and upload interfaces can change, so check the current rule for each destination immediately before publication.

1. Make an AI-and-destination inventory
Start with a written record of what the tools did. “Made with AI” is too vague for a rights or disclosure review. Record whether AI was used for research, outlining, script drafting, translation, host narration, voice cloning, music, sound effects, noise reduction, mastering, artwork, captions, video, thumbnails or promotional clips. Mark each item as fully generated, partially generated or merely assisted.

List every place the episode will appear
Destinations have different rules. Treat the audio RSS feed, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, a YouTube video, a website player, social-media clips and paid advertisements as separate releases. A disclosure in an RSS description does not automatically satisfy a video platform’s upload control, and permission for one use may not cover another.

Keep a production record
- Tool name and account or license used for each asset.
- Prompt, source material or recording supplied to the tool when it affects rights or accuracy.
- Whether a real person’s voice, image, name or mannerisms were used as a reference.
- Final files and the version that was actually reviewed by a human editor.
- Destinations, publication date, monetization status and planned promotional uses.
This inventory is an editorial control, not a platform-prescribed form. It gives you a defensible way to answer a takedown request, correct an episode or update a disclosure later.
2. Apply the correct platform disclosure rule
| Destination or format | What to check | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Podcasts audio or video podcast | Prominently disclose AI-generated audio or video in the content and in metadata for each episode and for the show. Include only material you have rights to use and avoid deceptive portrayals of real-life events. | Apple’s cited guideline does not prescribe one mandatory sentence, so write a clear explanation that an ordinary listener can understand. |
| Spotify podcast | Obtain permission before using another creator’s or host’s recognizable likeness, including a voice, image or other identifying characteristic produced by AI or another method. | The cited policy is an impersonation restriction, not a blanket requirement to disclose every kind of AI assistance. Review current Spotify rules and any stated exceptions, such as certain parody. |
| YouTube video version | Use YouTube’s altered or synthetic-content disclosure process when the video contains qualifying realistic altered or generated material. | This process concerns video uploads. Do not assume an audio-feed note completes the YouTube disclosure step. YouTube lists exceptions, including some production assistance and cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs. |
| Sponsored or affiliate episode | Assess material relationships and make an understandable advertising or endorsement disclosure under applicable rules. | Federal Trade Commission guidance is U.S. guidance; the required wording depends on the relationship and context. |
Apple Podcasts: disclose in two places
Apple’s Content Guidelines, section 1.11, states that creators using AI to generate audio or video—including synthetic voices, AI-generated hosts or on-screen personas, and AI-synthesized replicas of real individuals—must prominently disclose it to audiences in the content and metadata for each episode and show.
That means the listener should hear or see an intelligible disclosure in the episode itself, while the show and episode title or description fields should also identify the relevant AI use. Do not hide the information in an obscure credit page or rely on a vague phrase such as “technology used.” Explain what was synthetic: for example, narration, a host persona, translated dialogue or a reconstructed segment. Treat any sample wording as your own editorial copy, not as official Apple language.
Spotify: focus on unauthorized impersonation
Spotify Support says it will remove podcast content that impersonates another creator or host’s likeness without permission, whether the likeness was made with AI cloning or another method. The policy can apply even when the uploader omits the person’s name from the title, description and credits if listeners can still recognize the voice, image or combination of characteristics.

Before uploading, ask whether a reasonable listener could identify a real host or creator. If yes, keep written permission that covers the specific voice or likeness, the episode, monetization, promotion and distribution to Spotify and other destinations. Spotify notes exceptions, including certain parody, but the cited policy does not create a universal parody safe harbor.
YouTube: complete the video disclosure flow
For a video edition, inspect the actual upload screen and select the altered or synthetic-content disclosure when the material falls within YouTube’s rule. The rule is aimed at realistic content that could make viewers believe a person said or did something they did not. YouTube distinguishes some ordinary production assistance and cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs; those examples do not automatically decide every case.
Persistent failure to disclose qualifying content can lead to enforcement consequences. An audio podcast description, an Apple disclosure or a credit in your video description is not a substitute for the platform’s own upload control.
3. Clear consent and identity rights
Test recognizability, not just names
Identity risk is not limited to an exact voice clone. A distinctive accent, catchphrase, vocal rhythm, photograph, avatar, stage name, biographical detail or combination of clues can identify someone. Review the full episode, title, thumbnail and promotional clips together. A disclaimer saying “fictional” does not cure a presentation that sounds like a real person reporting a real event.

Document permission before production
For a licensed voice or likeness, retain the signed permission, the approved files, the permitted media and territory, the term, compensation, editing rights, synthetic-use rights and revocation or takedown terms. Confirm that the permission covers podcast feeds, video, social clips, advertising and monetization if you intend to use them.
If a tool’s terms say it can generate a voice, that does not prove the reference voice was authorized. If the tool offers a library voice, verify the license scope and whether it allows commercial distribution, advertising and derivative edits.
4. Clear rights for every included element
Apple requires creators to include only material they have rights to use, including applicable copyright, publicity and trademark rights. Run an asset-by-asset clearance rather than assuming that AI generation makes an element free of restrictions.

What current U.S. copyright guidance does—and does not—settle
The U.S. Copyright Office is examining digital replicas, the copyrightability of generative-AI outputs and AI training. Its multipart report lists Part 1 on digital replicas as published July 31, 2024; Part 2 on output copyrightability as published January 29, 2025; and Part 3 as listed pre-publication on May 9, 2025. Those dates describe the agency’s work, not a universal answer for a particular script, song, voice or training source.
Do not promise that every AI output is copyrightable, public domain or infringement-free. Ownership and infringement depend on the content, human contribution, permissions, contracts, facts and applicable jurisdiction. Obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice when a recognizable person, valuable catalog, disputed sample or major commercial release is involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Perform a human accuracy and deception review
Listen to the final mastered file and watch the final video, not just the draft transcript. Verify every name, quotation, date, attribution, statistic and description of an event. Compare quotations with the original source and remove confident language when the underlying fact cannot be established.
Flag reconstructed or synthetic reality
Apple prohibits AI use that deceptively portrays real-life events, including fabricated news stories or manipulated clips that present false narratives. The risk is highest in news, documentary, biography, history and public-affairs formats. A synthetic voice saying “I was there” can mislead even when the words were generated from a real transcript.
Best Value
- Label dramatizations and reconstructed audio before the segment begins.
- Do not present an invented interview, eyewitness account or archival recording as authentic.
- Separate verified quotations from paraphrase and machine-generated interpretation.
- Check that music, edits and sound design do not imply an event occurred when it did not.
- Have a human editor approve the final title, thumbnail and opening description, since those may create a stronger impression than the episode body.
6. Review sponsorships, testimonials and affiliate links
Treat advertising as a separate review from AI disclosure. Federal Trade Commission guidance applies to advertising and endorsements in any medium, including podcasts. Identify sponsor reads, affiliate links, testimonials, discount codes, gifted products, ownership interests and other material connections.
The audience should be able to understand the relationship when the recommendation is made. Do not use an AI-generated testimonial that sounds like an independent customer’s experience if no such person exists, and do not make product claims that the advertiser cannot substantiate. The appropriate disclosure depends on the relationship, placement and audience; the cited FTC material does not provide one universal phrase for every scenario. These are U.S. sources, not worldwide legal advice.
7. Check metadata, credits and the final export
Before distribution, compare the final audio or video with the metadata that platforms will display. Review the show title, episode title, description, author field, guest names, chapter titles, credits, artwork, transcript, captions and links.
- Place the required Apple AI disclosure in the episode content and in episode and show metadata.
- Do not credit a generated voice to a real person who did not perform or authorize it.
- Confirm that a recognizable likeness is not hidden by omitting a name; Spotify’s policy can still apply.
- Use the YouTube altered or synthetic-content control for a qualifying video upload.
- Check that descriptions and thumbnails do not imply a real event, interview or endorsement that the episode cannot support.
- Verify loudness, clipping, silence, pronunciation, captions and transcript accuracy after the final export.
8. A practical release-gate procedure
- Freeze the version. Assign a version number to the final audio, video, artwork, transcript and metadata.
- Complete the AI inventory. Mark every generated, cloned, translated or assisted element and list each destination.
- Resolve identity questions. Remove unlicensed likenesses or attach written permission that covers the planned uses.
- Clear the asset list. Save licenses and permissions for text, music, recordings, samples, images, clips and voices.
- Run the factual review. Verify names, quotations, dates and events; label dramatization or reconstruction.
- Write disclosures. Prepare listener-facing AI language, platform metadata and advertising disclosures suited to the actual episode.
- Complete destination controls. Apply Apple’s content-and-metadata disclosure, Spotify’s likeness check and YouTube’s video disclosure where applicable.
- Have a second human listen or watch. Ask what a reasonable audience member would believe about who is speaking, what happened and whether a recommendation is paid.
- Archive evidence. Keep the approved files, permissions, licenses, disclosure text and publication URLs so corrections can be made quickly.
9. Common failure points and fixes
| Failure | Why it fails | Fix before publication |
|---|---|---|
| “AI-assisted” appears only in a buried show note | Apple requires prominent disclosure in content and metadata for covered audio or video. | Identify the synthetic element clearly in the episode and the required metadata fields. |
| A cloned host is unnamed | Spotify’s likeness policy can apply when the voice remains recognizable. | Get permission, replace the voice or redesign the character so it is not identifiable. |
| An RSS description is treated as YouTube disclosure | YouTube uses its own altered or synthetic-content process for video. | Complete the video upload control and review the material against YouTube’s current examples. |
| A generator’s “commercial” label is treated as full clearance | Commercial permission may not cover a reference person, sample, trademark, territory or promotional use. | Read the tool and source licenses and obtain separate permissions where needed. |
| A fictional reconstruction sounds like news | Listeners may believe a real event or statement occurred. | Label the reconstruction, explain the method and remove misleading edits or claims. |
| An AI testimonial sounds personal | It can obscure a material brand relationship or invent experience. | Use an understandable advertising disclosure and make only substantiated claims. |
10. When to pause publication
Hold the release if you cannot identify the source or license for an included asset, cannot prove consent for a recognizable likeness, cannot determine whether a video requires altered-content disclosure, or cannot verify a factual claim that materially changes the audience’s understanding. Pause as well when the episode combines a real person’s identity with invented speech, events or endorsements. Re-editing a voice or adding a disclaimer may not cure a deceptive presentation.
For high-stakes journalism, biographies, political or public-affairs episodes, major sponsorships and disputes over ownership, obtain advice for the country or countries where you publish. The platform rules summarized here are destination-specific, and the FTC and U.S. Copyright Office materials are U.S. sources; they do not replace local law or a contract review.
