Before opening a GIFT City account for U.S. investments, find out exactly what you will own, which firms handle your money and securities, and whether your residency and funding route qualify. A GIFT City account can mean a depositary receipt, an international brokerage service arranged through a Global Access Provider, or a unit in a managed fund—not necessarily direct ownership of U.S. shares.
First, identify the product—not just the account label
“GIFT City account for U.S. stocks” can describe materially different investments and service arrangements. The provider’s name or the fact that a product gives exposure to a U.S.-listed company does not by itself establish that you will hold that company’s shares directly. Get the legal name of the instrument, its issuer, the account in which it will be recorded, and the identity of the firm holding any underlying securities.

| Route | What the provider describes | What you need to establish |
|---|---|---|
| NSE IFSC Receipts | Anand Rathi describes these as unsponsored depositary receipts based on selected U.S.-listed shares, listed and settled in GIFT City. Its description also refers to a demat account and corporate-action handling. | Which underlying share and receipt issuer or custodian apply; how a receipt relates to the underlying share; how voting and other corporate actions work; and what fractional, transfer, sale, and exit rules apply. |
| Global Access Provider route | Geojit describes an introducing-broker arrangement: the Global Access Provider and its partners handle execution, custody, clearing, and settlement. Geojit says it does not itself perform those functions for the investments. | The legal name and jurisdiction of each firm; whether you buy shares directly or another instrument; where and in whose name assets are held; and how orders, funding, withdrawals, statements, and disputes are handled. |
| Managed fund | DSP describes a global-equity product offered through an IFSC retail Fund Management Entity (FME). DSP currently states that this product is available only to HDFC bank account holders. | Current eligibility and availability, the portfolio and benchmark, fund and underlying costs, dealing and redemption terms, and the applicable fund and investor tax treatment. |
These are examples of different product categories, not endorsements or interchangeable ways to open the same kind of account. Provider descriptions, eligibility, available instruments, and terms can change; confirm the live offer and read its governing documents.

Check your status under the applicable FEMA framework before applying. IFSCA’s portfolio-manager rules say that an individual resident in India using an IFSC portfolio manager must be eligible under FEMA and is limited to the amount allowed under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). That specific rule should not be generalized to every GIFT City product or investor category; establish which rules apply to the product you intend to use.

Before sending money, ask both the provider and your remitting bank to confirm the permitted remittance route, purpose, required documents, and how much of your annual LRS allowance the transaction will use. Ask how your other overseas remittances are counted and verify your remaining allowance with the bank. RBI material describing permitted remittances is not a substitute for checking the current directions and your own circumstances.
Who executes trades and holds the assets?
Map the full service chain in writing. Depending on the route, the provider you speak to may not be the broker, custodian, clearing entity, settlement entity, or holder of the underlying asset. Ask for each firm’s legal name and role, its jurisdiction, and the account or record in which your investment will appear. For a Global Access Provider route, specifically distinguish the introducing broker from the firms that execute, clear, settle, and custody investments.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Ask for the current account agreement and custody terms. Check how client assets are titled and safeguarded, which entity’s records show your holdings, what happens if a provider or partner fails, and which complaint route applies. The protection and insolvency position depends on the specific product, legal ownership, custody chain, and current documents; do not assume that exchange listing or a provider’s general description settles those questions.

Get the live list of available instruments and written rules for order sizes, fractional units, order types, market access, and trading hours. For receipts, establish how the receipt can be sold or transferred and what happens when the underlying company has a corporate action. For a brokerage route, confirm the permitted assets and order types and the process for withdrawing funds. For a fund, check dealing frequency, redemption terms, and any applicable notice periods or restrictions.

Obtain the documents for the exact product and your investor category before relying on a general tax description. Exchange-level tax or transaction-fee information does not establish your income-tax result. A receipt, directly held share, and fund unit can raise different tax and reporting questions, and the answer may also depend on your tax residence and personal circumstances.

Ask the provider what tax forms it collects, what reporting support it supplies, how dividends and corporate actions are documented, and which records you should retain. The available provider descriptions do not determine an individual investor’s tax, reporting, or estate consequences. For cross-border questions, consult an appropriately qualified adviser rather than relying on marketing language or assuming a product is “tax-free.”
What should you verify before submitting an application?
- Confirm eligibility: establish your investor category and relevant FEMA status, then ask the provider whether the specific product accepts you.
- Confirm funding: ask the provider and bank about the remittance purpose, documents, applicable limit, and effect on your remaining LRS allowance.
- Get the product identity in writing: confirm whether you will own a share, depositary receipt, ETF, or fund unit; name the issuer; and identify the account record and holder of any underlying asset.
- Review the chain and contracts: obtain the current account agreement, custody terms, names and roles of all relevant firms, and the applicable complaint process.
- Calculate the full cost: use the current tariff to model a buy, hold, dividend, and sale, including bank, currency, brokerage, exchange, custody, settlement, and fund charges where relevant.
- Check onboarding requirements: confirm the current KYC list for your product and customer category. As one provider-specific example, Anand Rathi lists PAN, masked Aadhaar, bank proof, signature, nominee PAN, and a W-8BEN form for its receipt onboarding; do not assume that list applies to other routes.
- Check ongoing service: ask for sample statements or reporting details, dividend and corporate-action handling, withdrawal timelines, error-resolution contacts, and customer-asset terms.
Open the account only after the legal instrument, funding eligibility, service chain, costs, and governing documents are clear. If a provider cannot explain who owns or holds the relevant asset—or which agreement governs your rights—pause rather than treating “U.S. stocks” as a sufficient description.
