Before linking a bank account or UPI ID to a crypto app in India, verify who operates the service, check its applicable FIU-IND registration, read its deposit and withdrawal rules, and inspect the payee and amount in your UPI app before approving any payment. FIU-IND registration is a compliance check for covered activities—not a guarantee that an app is safe, that funds are protected, or that an investment is sound.
1. Identify the company operating the app
Find the legal entity name in the app’s terms, privacy notice, and official website. Note its country of operation, then check whether the app-store publisher and support channels appear to correspond to that entity. A familiar-looking brand name or copied logo alone does not verify who is behind an app.

If the operator or its contact details are unclear, do not proceed on the assumption that the app is legitimate. Ask the company to clarify its legal identity through a channel listed in its official terms.

2. Check FIU-IND status—and understand what it means
Under FIU-IND’s January 8, 2026 guidance, VDA service providers engaged in activities notified by the Central Government must register with FIU-IND as reporting entities. The guidance describes non-registration as a PMLA violation that may lead to action. Use the FIU-IND downloads page to find current official material; its listed guidance and circulars can change.

Distinguish a formal FIU Reporting Entity ID from a temporary application reference. FIU-IND says formal registration follows document submission, due process—including an in-person meeting—and approval by the Director, FIU-IND. An application reference is not the same as completed registration.
Registration concerns reporting and compliance obligations for covered activity. FIU-IND’s September 15, 2025 guidance describes obligations such as customer due diligence, record keeping, internal controls, staff training, and suspicious-transaction reporting. Those requirements can explain why a provider asks for identity information, but they do not establish asset protection, custody arrangements, reliable withdrawals, or investment approval by a market regulator.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
3. Read the app’s payment and withdrawal terms
Before adding a payment method, find the app’s current official instructions and terms. Check these details rather than assuming every crypto app uses the same flow:
- Which bank-transfer or UPI routes are supported, and whose name will appear as the recipient?
- Must the bank account belong to the same person who holds the crypto-app account?
- How does the provider say deposits are credited, and what should you do if payment is debited but the app balance does not update?
- What are the stated withdrawal rules and the process for failed, pending, or reversed payments?
- Which official support channel handles payment disputes, and which handles a deposit-credit problem?
If these rules or the recipient are not clearly disclosed, ask the provider before sending money. Generic UPI guidance cannot establish a particular app’s beneficiary, credit timing, account-name rules, or withdrawal policy.

4. Treat a UPI request as a payment authorization
NPCI describes UPI as an instant payment system for transfers between bank accounts. In an online merchant flow, a user may enter a UPI ID and receive a collect request in the UPI app. A collect request asks you to authorize a payment; it is not a method for someone to send money to you.
Before authorizing, compare the recipient and amount shown in your UPI app with the payment you intended to make. NPCI states: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” The PIN authorizes bank transactions, and NPCI says a bank’s customer support will never ask for it. Enter it only in your UPI app for a payment you initiated and intend to make—never disclose it to app staff, support, or someone claiming to help.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key NFC via USB-A and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.

5. Check that your mobile number matches your bank record
NPCI says the mobile number verified in the UPI app must match the number linked to the bank account for that account to be fetched. If the account does not appear, check that match and ask your bank or payment service provider (PSP) app about account support. NPCI also says UPI payments run 24/7.
6. Know what to do if a payment is pending or reversed
For a payment that appears unresolved, check its status in the UPI app and your bank records before trying again. Save the transaction reference and related confirmations so you can explain the issue without repeating the payment.

- For a payment that is pending, debited, declined, or apparently reversed, check the UPI transaction status and bank account record. Do not retry while the first payment is unresolved.
- For a bank or UPI payment issue, contact your bank or PSP through its official channel. For money debited but not credited to the crypto app, contact the app using the support route stated in its terms.
- If a BHIM transaction shows success but you have not received confirmation, NPCI’s FAQ advises contacting the bank if confirmation has not arrived within an hour. NPCI describes real-time reversals for declined transactions but notes that a reversal may not appear immediately.
These UPI timing notes do not promise when a crypto app will credit a deposit. Check the app’s own payment terms for that process.
7. Review privacy and account exposure
Linking or using a payment route may expose account-identifying information within the payment flow or to the provider, and a payment can move money out of your bank account. The sources cited here do not establish a universal level of app data access or protection. Read the app’s privacy notice and review the UPI controls available through your bank before deciding what exposure you accept.
8. Compare apps on the same four checks
When choosing between services, assess each one against these criteria; do not infer app-specific policies from another provider’s terms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Operator and compliance: Is the legal operator identifiable, and does the applicable FIU-IND status check out?
- Payment flow: Are the supported bank or UPI route and recipient details clearly disclosed?
- Problem handling: Are withdrawal, failed-payment, and complaint procedures written down?
- Security and privacy: What account-security controls and privacy disclosures does the app provide?
FIU-IND provides a central reference for the applicable reporting-entity registration check, while NPCI explains general UPI behavior. Neither source settles the specific payment flow, recipient, withdrawal rules, or security options of an unnamed app. Verify those points in each candidate’s current official terms.
