Before you leave T-Mobile, check each device’s remaining payment balance, the terms and timing of its promotion, your billing-cycle end date, and any account credit. Porting your number deactivates service immediately, but T-Mobile says you remain responsible for the full billing cycle. Cancellation may also stop promotional credits or accelerate device payments, though the exact result depends on the terms of each offer.
Check each device payment and promotion separately
Sign in to My T-Mobile and make a list of every phone or other device you are still paying for. For each one, record the remaining Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) balance and payment schedule, then match the device to its promotion ID and credit history.

- Review the specific offer’s terms for cancellation, any active-line requirement, and whether installments or credits can continue after service ends.
- Note when you enrolled in the EIP and accepted the promotion. T-Mobile’s promotional FAQ distinguishes early-payoff treatment for enrollments before July 1, 2024 from those on or after that date.
- Save screenshots or copies of the balance, promotion ID, credit history, and any support confirmation so you can compare them with the final statement.
T-Mobile’s general FAQ says promotional credits generally stop when service is canceled and the remaining device balance may become due. Understand what early payoff could do to credits
Paying off an EIP before leaving is not automatically a way to preserve every remaining promotional credit. T-Mobile’s FAQ says customers who enrolled on or after July 1, 2024 forfeit remaining monthly recurring device credits if they pay off the EIP early. For earlier enrollments, the FAQ describes credits continuing as account-level credits after payoff. Check your agreement and offer terms before making an early payment; enrollment timing and offer-specific rules matter.

Ask whether installments can continue after cancellation
Before canceling, contact T-Mobile and ask whether each device qualifies to continue on monthly installments after service ends, and what action or deadline applies. Some offers have exceptions, but they are not universal. T-Mobile’s 2026 past-offers page says certain eligible customers may need to contact CARE before cancellation or within 60 days after cancellation to request continuation. Confirm that the exception applies to your specific device and promotion rather than assuming the window covers every account. Check T-Mobile’s past promotional-offer details.
Account for the full billing cycle after porting
T-Mobile’s terms say service is deactivated immediately when you port your number to another carrier, but you are still charged for a full billing cycle. Porting therefore does not prorate the final service bill. Note your billing-cycle end date when comparing the cost of leaving now with waiting until a later date. Cancellation may also affect linked services or subscriptions billed through T-Mobile, so identify those before you switch. See T-Mobile’s Terms & Conditions.

Check the final statement and any account credit
After cancellation, review the final statement and account reconciliation for an eligible overpayment credit. T-Mobile says it will attempt to return an eligible credit to the original payment method; if that cannot be processed, it may refund it another way. If the eligible final credit is less than $1, T-Mobile says you must request the refund. Contact T-Mobile if an expected balance is missing.

Use the records for each device and the billing details in your account to compare the actual cost of leaving with the cost of waiting. There is no single payoff or credit outcome that applies to every T-Mobile customer.
