Before you leave T-Mobile, determine whether you are canceling one line or the entire account, review every Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) and promotion, prepare the credentials for a number transfer, save data that will be deleted, and plan for the final bill. Porting a number does not by itself erase a phone balance, and canceling at the wrong time can end recurring credits or trigger a larger final charge.
First decide: one line, the whole account, or a responsibility transfer
T-Mobile treats a single-line cancellation differently from a complete account cancellation. Your choice affects when device balances are billed, whether other lines and discounts remain, and whether you need to port a number.

Read T-Mobile’s cancel service support page and, when another person is taking over, its account or line ownership guidance. Do not assume that porting a number automatically pays off or transfers the associated phone financing.
Inventory every phone, tablet, watch, and EIP
Record the payoff and monthly charge
Make a list of each financed device, the line it is attached to, the remaining EIP balance, the monthly installment, and the date the installment is expected to end. Capture screenshots or download statements while you still have account access. A phone can remain financed even after its number has moved elsewhere.

If you keep other lines, T-Mobile says payments for a device tied to a canceled line continue to bill monthly. If you close the entire account, the remaining device balances are due on the final bill. This distinction makes the cancellation scope the first item to verify with an account representative if the online account view is unclear.
Check every credit before changing a line
Open the details for each promotion and note its qualifying line, required plan, required number of lines, remaining credit months, and any trade-in or redemption condition. Credits are offer-specific. Canceling a line can stop its device credits, remove a free-line benefit, or change a multi-line discount even when another device remains active.
T-Mobile’s ownership-transfer guidance says recurring device credits require both the associated line and its EIP to remain active, subject to the applicable offer. That is not a promise that every promotion survives a transfer; verify the exact offer attached to your account before agreeing to a change.

Consider a responsibility transfer when someone else will keep the service
If a family member, employee, or buyer will continue using a line, ask about transferring responsibility instead of canceling it. Compare the transfer’s eligibility requirements with the promotion terms and confirm in writing whether the EIP, credits, plan pricing, and line benefits will remain. A transfer can avoid an immediate payoff, but it does not override the conditions of the original offer.

Prepare a personal postpaid number transfer
For a personal postpaid account, the new carrier normally starts the port. You must provide credentials that prove you control the T-Mobile account.
- Identify the primary account holder. T-Mobile’s process requires that person to generate the Temporary Port Out PIN.
- Generate the Temporary Port Out PIN. Use the current instructions in T-Mobile’s transfer your phone number support page. App labels and navigation can change, so follow the live prompts rather than an old screenshot.
- Gather the T-Mobile account number. It is separate from the wireless phone number being transferred.
- Turn off Port Out Protection for the line if it is enabled. Leaving the protection on can block the request even when the account number and PIN are correct.
- Give the account number, Temporary Port Out PIN, and requested line details to the new carrier. Let that carrier submit and manage the transfer.
- Wait for confirmation that the port completed before canceling the account. Canceling first can interrupt the transfer and leave you without the number.
Porting deactivates the T-Mobile line when the transfer completes, but T-Mobile’s stated billing policy still charges service through the end of the current billing cycle. This is T-Mobile’s policy for the account types described on its support pages, not a universal rule for every carrier or plan.
Understand billing-cycle timing and the final statement
Why the final bill may be larger than expected
T-Mobile says a normal cancellation generally takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle. A full account closure can add all unpaid EIP balances to that final statement. The bill can also include service through the cycle, taxes and fees, usage posted after your last ordinary invoice, and charges for equipment that was not returned when required.

Before starting a port or cancellation, write down the billing-cycle start and end dates shown on your latest statement. Keep the statement, payment confirmations, promotion details, and any chat or call case numbers until the account shows a zero balance or an issued refund.

AutoPay, paperless billing, and payment methods
T-Mobile says the final bill continues through its normal billing method. AutoPay may still charge the saved payment method unless you remove it before the final payment processes. Removing a card too early can create a missed payment, so first confirm the exact final amount and due date and keep another payment method available.
Keep the email address and phone number used for paperless-billing notices active until the final statement arrives. If you lose account access after cancellation, request a downloadable copy before the closure or ask support how to receive the final bill.
Credits, deposits, and refunds
Apply any security deposit or existing account credit to the final balance when T-Mobile’s billing system allows it. Then check whether the statement shows money still owed to you rather than an amount you must pay.
T-Mobile’s cancellation guidance says a credit balance remaining 30 days after the final bill may be refunded automatically. Its separate adjustments and refunds guidance describes a canceled account needing at least 30 days without payment or charge activity before a credit-balance refund is issued. Treat both conditions as part of T-Mobile’s guidance: inspect the actual final bill, avoid making unnecessary payments that reset the waiting period, and contact support if the expected refund does not appear after the stated period.

Save account data before cancellation
Voicemail and DIGITS history
Download or otherwise preserve anything you need from voicemail before closing the line. T-Mobile states that voicemail messages and DIGITS call history are permanently deleted after cancellation and cannot be recovered. If a message is needed for legal, work, medical, or personal records, save it outside the T-Mobile account while the line is active.
Unpair connected devices
Review watches, tablets, hotspots, and other connected-device lines. T-Mobile recommends unpairing a smartwatch line before cancellation. Remove cellular plans from the watch using the watch or phone’s companion settings, then confirm that the watch still has the expected Bluetooth or Wi-Fi behavior. Do not assume that canceling the phone line automatically cleans up a paired wearable.
Home Internet equipment
If you also have T-Mobile Home Internet, the gateway and mesh Wi-Fi extenders have a separate return requirement. T-Mobile’s cancellation page says those devices are due within 14 days after cancellation and that a non-return fee of up to $370 plus tax may apply. These deadlines and fees concern Home Internet equipment, not ordinary mobile phones. Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number until the return is accepted.

Several days before the transfer or cancellation
- Decide whether you are closing one line, the full account, or transferring responsibility.
- List every EIP, remaining balance, monthly payment, promotion, and line-count requirement.
- Save statements, promotion terms, voicemail, DIGITS history, and important account records.
- Check smartwatch, tablet, hotspot, and Home Internet equipment connected to the account.
- Confirm the billing-cycle dates and whether AutoPay is enabled.
On the day the number moves
- Have the primary account holder generate the Temporary Port Out PIN.
- Record the account number and disable Port Out Protection for the transferring line.
- Give the information to the new carrier and let it initiate the port.
- Do not separately cancel the T-Mobile account while the port is pending.
- After completion, verify that the number works for calls, texts, and two-factor authentication.
After cancellation
- Read the final bill for service dates, EIP payoffs, credits, taxes, and equipment charges.
- Check whether AutoPay charged the expected amount and retain the receipt.
- Confirm that any remaining credit is scheduled for refund under T-Mobile’s 30-day conditions.
- Track Home Internet returns until T-Mobile records them as received.
- Keep documentation until the balance is zero and any refund has arrived.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Canceling before the port finishes
Symptom: The new carrier cannot complete the transfer or the number stops working. Fix: Contact the new carrier and T-Mobile promptly, provide the correct account credentials, and ask whether the number can be restored or the port resubmitted. Prevention is safer: let the receiving carrier initiate and confirm completion first.
Assuming a promotional credit is guaranteed after cancellation
Symptom: A future monthly credit disappears or a discount changes after a line is removed. Fix: Compare the final bill with the promotion’s qualifying-line and plan requirements. Ask T-Mobile to explain the adjustment and retain the promotion reference; credits cannot be assumed once eligibility changes.
Expecting a canceled line’s phone to be paid off automatically
Symptom: Installments continue after the number has moved. Fix: Check whether other lines remain active. T-Mobile says the EIP can continue monthly in that situation; request a payoff quote if you want to settle it rather than waiting for installments.
Removing AutoPay without a final-payment plan
Symptom: The final bill becomes past due or a promised payment fails. Fix: Confirm the final amount and due date first, then update or remove the saved method in time for the final payment. Keep proof of payment.
Ignoring account data and connected equipment
Symptom: Voicemail or DIGITS records are gone, a watch remains linked, or a Home Internet return fee appears. Fix: Save records and unpair devices before cancellation; return Home Internet hardware within the stated 14-day window with tracking.
What to verify before you sign off
Use T-Mobile’s cancellation instructions for the account-specific closure steps, the number-transfer instructions for current port credentials, and the refund guidance when a credit remains. The safest sequence is to preserve data, document EIPs and promotions, prepare the port, let the new carrier complete it, and then reconcile the final bill rather than treating cancellation as a single button press.
