Then assess its balance sheet and valuation. Use the company’s latest filings for every metric: terms such as “bookings” and “backlog” are not standardized, and a risk disclosure identifies an exposure the issuer considers relevant—it does not predict that a loss will occur.
1. Understand what the company sells and how demand recurs
Start with the business description and segment notes in the latest annual report. IT services companies may provide application development, consulting, systems integration, infrastructure management, business process services, or a combination. Those activities can have different growth drivers, margins, and revenue patterns.

Identify whether revenue is mainly recurring managed services, project-based work, usage-based fees, or a mix. For project work, examine renewal patterns and whether clients can reduce, terminate, or bring work in-house. Also check contract duration, termination rights, customer concentration, industries served, and how much demand depends on discretionary technology budgets.

These are EPAM-specific disclosures, but they illustrate why a high-profile client list or a growing market does not by itself establish durable revenue. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K

Separate reported growth into organic growth, acquisitions, currency effects, service-line mix, and changes in major customers. If management reports signings, bookings, backlog, or deferred revenue, read the issuer’s definition and any adjustments before treating the figure as evidence of future sales. IBM, for instance, describes signings as management’s initial estimate of a client’s commitment under a services contract and backlog as an estimate of remaining contract value expected to be recognized, adjusted for revenue already recognized and other changes. Backlog offers context, not a guarantee. IBM 2025 Form 10-K
Gartner’s 2024 filing also identifies client retention, renewals, new contract value, backlog, and deferred revenue as business drivers and risks. Track a company’s own measures consistently over time; do not compare figures across issuers until you have reconciled their definitions. Gartner 2024 Form 10-K
2. Test whether growth is profitable
Review gross and operating margin trends, preferably by segment as well as company-wide. In the management discussion, look for explanations involving utilization, wage trends, subcontractors, pricing, project mix, restructuring, and acquisition costs. Ask whether revenue growth requires roughly proportional hiring or whether automation, reusable tools, or other operating changes are improving output per employee.

Contract type affects the risk of delivering that growth. Time-and-materials work, fixed-price projects, outcome-based arrangements, and managed services expose providers to different combinations of staffing, scope, and cost risk. In fixed-price or productivity-linked work, the provider may have to absorb overruns if its assumptions about scope, staffing, costs, or productivity prove wrong. EPAM flags underpricing and inaccurate cost estimates as risks in these contract types in its 2025 filing. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K
Look for signs that margin changes have an operating explanation rather than assuming a single quarter establishes a trend. Rising wages, weaker utilization, discounting, a shift toward lower-margin services, or delivery overruns can offset sales growth. Conversely, a margin improvement is more persuasive when management explains its source and the filing’s figures show it persisting.
3. Check whether earnings turn into cash
Compare net income with cash from operations across several years. Persistent gaps deserve investigation, not an automatic conclusion that reported earnings are unreliable. Review receivables, unbilled work or contract assets, deferred revenue or contract liabilities, collection periods, and working-capital movements. Consider whether stock compensation, acquisitions, restructuring, or other non-cash items help explain the difference.
Long collection times can weaken cash generation even when revenue and accounting earnings look healthy. EPAM notes that delayed client payments or client payment problems can extend collection times and increase bad-debt expense. Compare the company’s explanation with the direction of its receivables and cash-flow figures. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K

People and the ability to allocate them to billable work are central operating inputs for services firms. Review disclosed employee counts, hiring and attrition, skill mix, wage trends, utilization where reported, and reliance on subcontractors. Then examine where delivery teams are located and whether the company depends heavily on particular countries, customers, sectors, or regions.
Delivery geography can expose a company to political, currency, infrastructure, and regulatory disruption. As one dated, issuer-specific example, EPAM reported approximately 14,100 global delivery, administrative, and support personnel based in Ukraine and Belarus as of December 31, 2025. That figure describes EPAM at that date, not the IT services industry as a whole. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K

5. Assess AI as both an opportunity and a risk
AI may support faster delivery, automate routine work, and create new client projects. It may also reduce billable hours, change pricing, enable clients to build or modify applications in-house, increase competition, or require investment. Look for company-specific evidence—reported demand, client wins, productivity measures, and margin effects—rather than treating broad AI claims as proof of financial benefit.
EPAM says clients may use AI tools to create or modify applications internally, potentially reducing reliance on outside providers. Gartner identifies keeping pace with AI and other technology developments as a risk. Those disclosures show that the issuers consider the issue relevant; they do not establish a uniform effect across providers or a dependable forecast of displacement. 6. Read the operating, cyber, and regulatory risks
Review risk factors for service interruptions, contract disputes, client credit problems, cybersecurity, privacy, intellectual property, employee availability, and regulatory compliance. Check whether the company reports incidents, litigation, remediation costs, customer losses, or changes in insurance. Read cybersecurity disclosures alongside the risk factors and governance discussion, but do not treat a description of controls as proof that incidents cannot happen.

EPAM discusses security and privacy exposures, including potential effects on reputation, service delivery, and customer relationships. Gartner lists cybersecurity incidents and disruptions among its risks. TTEC’s 2024 filing discusses security, privacy, and emerging-technology risks and identifies client relationships, innovation, delivery capability, efficiency, pricing, brand, and financial strength as competitive factors. These examples show categories to investigate; an issuer’s risk disclosure does not quantify the probability of loss. EPAM 2025 Form 10-K; Gartner 2024 Form 10-K; TTEC 2024 Form 10-K

Examine cash, debt maturities, interest costs, leases, pension or other long-term obligations, acquisition commitments, and available liquidity. Assess share-based compensation and dilution as well as buybacks and dividends. For acquisitions, consider integration costs and whether acquired businesses appear to earn returns that justify the purchase price.
Gartner’s filing identifies debt obligations, acquisitions and integration, staffing, competition, and international currency exposure among its risks. These are useful categories to check in other issuers’ filings, not evidence that every company has the same exposure. Gartner 2024 Form 10-K
8. Decide whether the price fits plausible outcomes
A sound business can still be a poor investment at an unjustified price. Compare valuation using suitable measures—for example, enterprise value relative to normalized operating earnings or free cash flow—while accounting for growth, margins, capital intensity, and differences in debt and cash. Build conservative, base, and optimistic assumptions for growth and margins, and consider the cash flows each scenario implies. No single valuation multiple establishes fair value on its own.
For a peer comparison, align fiscal periods, currencies, acquisition effects, and accounting definitions before ranking companies. Compare service mix and discretionary versus contracted demand; organic growth, retention, concentration, and backlog definitions; segment margins and contract risks; cash conversion, debt, and dilution; talent and delivery footprint; evidence of AI-related demand or productivity; and valuation against plausible normalized cash generation. This is a framework for analysis, not a stock-specific recommendation.
Quick Recap
Turn the checklist into a repeatable review
- Read the latest annual filing. Start with the business description, segment notes, management discussion, financial statements, and risk factors.
- Check the latest quarterly filing and company updates. Look for changes in demand, margins, collections, staffing, risks, and balance-sheet position since the annual report.
- Write down definitions before comparing metrics. Record how the issuer defines bookings, signings, backlog, utilization, and other non-standard measures.
- Compare several periods. Separate durable trends from one-time effects such as acquisitions, currency movements, restructuring, or unusual working-capital changes.
- Test more than one valuation scenario. Use assumptions you can explain, and revisit them when new filings or market prices change the inputs.
