An Indian Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) should be assessed strategy by strategy, not by its label alone. Before subscribing, confirm whether you meet the ₹10 lakh aggregate minimum, how and when you can redeem, the strategy’s actual total expense ratio (TER) and exit-load rules, and the tax classification that applies under the law in force. SEBI’s investor FAQ, published on 22 September 2026, makes these document checks central to the decision. The checklist below is India-specific and reflects information available on 13 October 2026; offer documents, expense disclosures and tax rules can change.
What an SIF is—and why the scheme name is not enough
A Specialised Investment Fund is a SEBI-regulated investment format in which an asset manager offers defined investment strategies under an SIF. The practical terms that affect you—minimum holding, dealing days, notice periods, fees, risk disclosures and taxation—are set out in the documents for the particular strategy.

Two strategies within one SIF can therefore have different asset allocations, derivative use, dealing frequency, exit loads and tax treatment. Do not infer that every SIF is open-ended, instantly redeemable, equity-taxed or priced in the same way. Read the current strategy-level Information Statement or Scheme Information Document (ISID), Statement of Additional Information (SAI), fee disclosure and tax notes before investing.

SEBI’s September 2026 investor FAQ says that particular attention should be paid to the “investment objective, asset allocation, derivatives exposure, Risk-band, scenario analysis, subscription and redemption frequency, notice period, fees, expenses and exit load, if any.” Use those items as a comparison framework when reviewing alternatives.

1. Check whether you meet the ₹10 lakh minimum
How the threshold is calculated
SEBI’s current framework sets a ₹10 lakh minimum aggregate investment across the investment strategies of a particular SIF, calculated at the investor’s Permanent Account Number (PAN) level. The amount is not automatically a separate ₹10 lakh requirement for every strategy. You may be able to spread the applicable aggregate across strategies offered by that SIF, subject to the strategy documents and application process.
Investments in regular mutual-fund schemes do not count toward this SIF aggregate, even when those schemes are offered by the same asset-management company. Keep the SIF calculation separate from your ordinary mutual-fund portfolio.
Accredited-investor exception
Accredited investors are exempt from the ₹10 lakh minimum under the SEBI framework. Confirm that your accredited-investor status is valid and recorded through the required process before relying on the exemption; do not assume that a high net worth or income figure alone is sufficient.
Joint folios and PAN records
For a joint folio, the first holder’s PAN governs the aggregate calculation. Check which PAN is recorded on every application and folio if you are combining holdings or changing the order of holders.

What happens after a redemption?
Meeting the entry threshold does not necessarily mean you can redeem down to any amount. Strategy documents may require the investor to maintain the applicable minimum aggregate value. A redemption that takes your holdings below that threshold could be restricted, rejected, or require an additional investment, depending on the disclosed terms. Read the minimum-investment clause together with the redemption provisions and ask the fund house how a partial exit is handled.
2. Establish exactly how liquidity works
Liquidity is a contractual feature of the chosen strategy, not a universal SIF benefit. SEBI permits open-ended, close-ended and interval strategies. The offer document must disclose the subscription and redemption arrangements, but the practical experience can differ substantially between these structures.
Open-ended strategies
An open-ended strategy generally accepts subscriptions and redemptions on specified dealing days rather than continuously at every moment. Confirm the dealing frequency, cut-off time, applicable NAV, notice requirement and expected payment timetable. “Open-ended” by itself does not promise same-day execution or cash.
Close-ended strategies
A close-ended strategy normally has a defined term or restricted exit window. Check the maturity date, any permitted early-redemption facility, transfer restrictions and the process for receiving proceeds at maturity. If your money may be needed before the stated term, a close-ended structure can be unsuitable regardless of the strategy’s investment merits.

Interval strategies
An interval strategy allows transactions only during specified windows. The documents should identify the interval dates, the notice deadline and the NAV or pricing method. Missing a notice deadline can move your request to a later window.
Six liquidity questions to answer from the ISID or SAI
- Is the strategy open-ended, close-ended or interval?
- On which days are subscriptions and redemptions processed?
- How much advance notice is required, and in what form?
- Which cut-off time, NAV and valuation date apply to your request?
- When and how will redemption proceeds be paid?
- Are there exit loads, suspension powers, segregated portfolios or other restrictions?
Illustrative terms are not universal rules
A 2026 HSBC RedHex ISID illustrates why the details matter: it provides for weekly redemption processing and a 10-working-day notice period, while also making redemption subject to the minimum investment threshold. Those are terms of that strategy only. They should not be treated as standard terms for every SIF.
Side-pocketed or segregated portfolios can have separate dealing and payment terms. If a strategy discloses such arrangements, read the liquidity section for the main portfolio and each segregated portion rather than assuming one timetable covers all units.

Understand what TER includes
The total expense ratio is the ongoing cost charged to the strategy, but the current number and its components matter more than a regulatory maximum or an old fact sheet. A 2026 strategy disclosure explains that TER can include base expenses, permitted brokerage and transaction costs, and statutory levies such as GST. The amount borne by investors can therefore change with portfolio activity, brokerage and applicable levies.

Obtain the strategy’s live expense disclosure from the SIF or asset manager and record the date. Compare the actual TER for each strategy and plan, along with any separate transaction charges. If both direct and regular plans are offered, compare their current expenses and read the official explanation of distribution-related costs instead of assuming the difference.
Exit loads and other one-off costs
An exit load is charged when units are redeemed under the stated conditions. Note the holding-period clock, the percentage, the portion of the redemption to which it applies and any exceptions. Also check whether switching between strategies, transferring units or making an early exit creates a charge.
An AMFI-hosted QSIF disclosure gives an example of a 1% exit load for redemption within 15 days and no exit load after 15 days. This is an example from that disclosure, not a rule for all SIF strategies. Your chosen strategy may use a different period, percentage or schedule.

4. Work out which tax rules actually apply
There is no single “SIF tax rate.” SEBI’s current FAQ says taxation depends on the nature and classification of the investment strategy and on the law in force at the relevant time. The strategy disclosure must therefore be read alongside the applicable Income-tax rules for the financial year in which the gain, dividend or other income arises.
Best Value
Classification comes before the rate
A 2026 SEBI-filed strategy disclosure distinguishes treatment for equity-oriented and specified mutual funds and states that the Income-tax Act, 2025 is effective from 1 April 2026. That does not make every SIF an equity-oriented fund or a specified mutual fund. Confirm the specific strategy’s classification, the assets that determine it, and whether the classification can change.
Rates cited in the current reference material
The Income Tax Department’s current rate reference lists 12.5% for qualifying long-term gains under section 112A and 20% for qualifying short-term gains under section 111A in the post-change framework. These figures are reference rates for gains that meet the relevant statutory conditions; they are not a universal SIF rate.
Before estimating tax, verify:
- Whether the strategy qualifies for section 112A, section 111A or another category;
- The holding-period test for the relevant asset and transaction;
- Any threshold, exemption, surcharge, cess or set-off condition;
- Your residential status and any withholding requirement;
- The financial year and tax law applicable on the date of transfer or distribution.
Why a tax estimate can be wrong even with the right percentage
Applying 12.5% or 20% to a gain without checking classification and holding period can materially understate or overstate liability. The taxable event, cost basis, corporate actions, distributions and any applicable threshold also affect the calculation. Investors with non-resident status, multiple holders, business income, carried-forward losses or substantial transactions should obtain advice from a qualified tax professional rather than rely on a generic SIF illustration.

5. Compare two strategies on the same axes
When evaluating alternatives, create one row for each strategy and complete every field from current official documents. A lower fee or more frequent dealing schedule is not automatically better if the asset allocation, derivative exposure or risk profile is different.
| Comparison axis | Information to capture |
|---|---|
| Investment objective | Return objective, benchmark or stated role in a portfolio |
| Asset allocation | Permitted asset classes, ranges and concentration limits |
| Derivatives exposure | Permitted instruments, purpose and disclosed limits |
| Risk disclosures | Risk band, scenario analysis and material assumptions |
| Structure | Open-ended, close-ended or interval |
| Dealing terms | Subscription and redemption frequency, notice and cut-off |
| NAV and payment mechanics | Valuation date, applicable NAV and payment timetable |
| Minimum implications | Aggregate threshold, PAN treatment and post-redemption requirement |
| Costs | Current TER, components, plan type, exit load and transaction costs |
| Tax classification | Classification stated in the current disclosure and law for the relevant year |
6. A document-led process before you subscribe
- Confirm eligibility. Identify the first holder’s PAN, determine whether you are an accredited investor, and calculate the ₹10 lakh aggregate only across strategies of the same SIF.
- Download current documents. Obtain the strategy’s ISID, SAI, application form, risk disclosures, fee schedule and tax note from the SIF or asset manager.
- Mark liquidity terms. Highlight dealing days, notice period, cut-off, NAV, payment timing, exit load, suspension clauses and any segregated-portfolio rules.
- Test an exit scenario. Ask what happens if you redeem part of the holding, miss a notice deadline or fall below the minimum aggregate value.
- Record costs. Write down the current TER and components, plan type, exit-load schedule and transaction charges, with document dates.
- Verify tax classification. Match the strategy’s stated classification to the law effective for the relevant financial year; do not import the tax treatment of another fund.
- Keep evidence. Save the version of every document used for the decision and retain confirmations of PAN, folio and accredited-investor status.
- Seek advice where facts are complex. Use a qualified tax professional for bespoke tax questions and a SEBI-registered investment adviser for personalised suitability advice.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming ₹10 lakh is required separately in every strategy without checking the SIF-level aggregation rule.
- Counting regular mutual-fund holdings toward the SIF threshold.
- Calling an SIF “liquid” without checking dealing frequency and notice period.
- Using one strategy’s exit load or redemption timetable as a template for another.
- Comparing a regulatory expense ceiling with the actual TER currently charged.
- Applying equity-fund tax rates before confirming the strategy’s classification and holding period.
- Ignoring the effect of a partial redemption on the minimum aggregate value.
- Relying on an old factsheet after the tax law or strategy documents have changed.
When to pause the investment
Pause and obtain clarification if the current ISID, SAI, fee disclosure and application form do not agree; if the fund house cannot explain the applicable NAV or notice deadline; if the post-redemption minimum is unclear; or if the tax classification is described only in marketing material. A missing answer on any of these points is a reason to wait for the official document or professional advice, not to infer the most favourable interpretation.
The key decision is document-specific: invest only after you can state the exact minimum applicable to your PAN, the earliest realistic redemption date, the full current cost schedule and the tax category that applies to your strategy under the law in force.
