An early-stage lithium project is a geological and engineering hypothesis, not a mine. Before investing, establish exactly what has been demonstrated, which assumptions still carry the valuation, what approvals and capital are needed for the next milestone, and how the project would survive lower prices, poorer recovery, delays or dilution. Compare projects only at equivalent stages and verify every material claim in the latest technical, legal and financial filings.
Start by identifying the project’s real development stage
Terms such as “advanced exploration,” “development ready” or “construction target” are not interchangeable with independently completed studies. Ontario’s mining sequence describes evaluation progressing through geological work and mineral-resource reporting, a preliminary economic assessment (PEA), pre-feasibility study (PFS) and feasibility study (FS). The work examines geology, mining methods, processing, infrastructure, economics, pricing, financing and life-of-mine expenditure. A development decision follows better deposit definition and progressively more detailed economic studies.

Request the latest dated work program and complete technical study, not only a presentation. Record the study’s effective date, the reporting code used, the qualified or competent person responsible, and the work required before a construction decision.

Do not treat a management timeline as proof that a later-stage study is complete. A company can announce a target date for a PFS or FS while the underlying drilling, metallurgy, permitting or funding remains unfinished.

Test the mineral-resource evidence
Read the classification and effective date
Obtain the complete current technical report and identify whether tonnage and grade are classified as inferred, indicated or measured under the applicable reporting code. Check the effective date: an older estimate may not reflect new drilling, changed prices, revised cut-off grades or altered land and permitting conditions.
- Identify the qualified or competent person and their stated site visits, data review and responsibility.
- Review drilling density, geological interpretation, sample preparation, assay laboratories, blanks, standards, duplicates and other quality-control procedures.
- Record the cut-off grade and the assumptions supporting “reasonable prospects” of eventual extraction.
- Check the resource boundary, density data, continuity assumptions and any excluded or constrained areas.
- Determine whether a mineral reserve is separately reported and under which code.
Resource and reserve are not interchangeable. A resource describes mineralization with varying confidence; a reserve requires the application of modifying factors such as mining, processing, economic, legal, environmental, social and governmental considerations. Inferred material is too speculative for modifying factors to establish reserves.
Use project figures only in their stated context
The McDermitt Lithium Project S-K 1300 Initial Assessment, dated May 2026, illustrates why footnotes matter. It reports 1,030 million tonnes of indicated resource at 1,450 parts per million lithium and 1,440 million tonnes of inferred resource at 1,320 parts per million, using a 1,000 parts-per-million cut-off. The report says no mineral reserves have been estimated. Those figures are specific to that project and report; they are not a benchmark for lithium projects generally.
The estimate relies on assumptions including lithium-carbonate price, costs and process recovery. When comparing another project, do not copy these values into a model or infer mineable tonnage from them. First establish that the other project uses a comparable deposit type, reporting code, cut-off basis and effective date.
Determine whether the metallurgy can produce a saleable product
Match the process route to the deposit
Identify whether the project is hard-rock, brine, clay or another deposit type. A flowsheet that works for one type cannot be assumed to work for another. Ask how samples were selected and whether they represent the planned mine area, depth, grade distribution, weathering and deleterious elements.

- Recovery by process step, including losses in leaching, separation, purification and crystallization.
- Impurity-removal performance and the reagents, energy and residence time required.
- Water balance, water quality, recycling assumptions and discharge treatment.
- Waste-rock, tailings or spent-brine characteristics and their management.
- Product specification, expected lithium chemical form and buyer qualification requirements.
Separate measured results from modeled assumptions
Ask whether each recovery and impurity figure comes from laboratory tests, pilot work, demonstration-scale operation or a model. Confirm test conditions, sample representativeness, replication and mass balance closure. Complex mineralogy and specialized processing are recognized sources of technical risk in government critical-minerals guidance.
In the May 2026 McDermitt assessment, the qualified persons state that an assumed 2% lithium loss during impurity removal and carbonate production had not been verified through dedicated testwork. Actual losses could be higher. A small change in recovery can reduce payable product while leaving much of the mine, plant and infrastructure cost unchanged, so it should be modeled as a downside case rather than treated as a proven performance number.

Check what the company actually controls
Request a map and legal schedule covering mineral claims or leases, surface rights, water rights, access, royalties, options, earn-ins, back-in rights, liens and other encumbrances. Confirm expiry dates, annual work or rental requirements and whether boundaries overlap competing claims or protected areas.
Build a permit and opposition register
List every permit needed for exploration, road construction, water use, drilling, mine development, processing, waste storage, power and transport. For each, record the application date, responsible agency, current status, expected decision, appeal rights and dependencies. A project with a compliant resource can still fail to advance if a critical permit is denied or delayed.
Review baseline studies and plans for water supply and discharge, biodiversity, cultural heritage, tailings or waste, reclamation, closure and financial assurance. Confirm who pays for long-term monitoring and remediation, and whether closure costs are included in the economic model.

Engagement with local and Indigenous communities should be evaluated as an ongoing project risk, not as a public-relations milestone. Look for consultation records, agreements, unresolved grievances, land-use conflicts and commitments that could change the mine plan or schedule.

These are project-specific findings, but they demonstrate why a tenure map and litigation docket belong in an investment file.
Rebuild the economic case from its assumptions
Identify the level of economic certainty
Read the full PEA, PFS or FS rather than relying on a headline net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR). Preliminary studies generally have wider estimate ranges and more unresolved design choices than feasibility studies. Record the mine plan, throughput, operating years, recovery, product grade, capital cost, operating cost, sustaining capital, contingency, taxes, royalties, closure cost, exchange rate, discount rate and schedule.
Victorian mineral-resource guidance distinguishes objective economic viability from a company’s immediate financial capacity: “Economic viability is not a function of a firm’s financial capability.” In practice, a deposit may appear economically attractive on paper while its owner lacks the money to complete drilling, permitting or construction.
Run downside cases that reflect the technical risks
Recalculate economics under lower lithium prices, lower recovery, higher reagent and energy costs, higher sustaining capital, construction delay, reduced throughput, additional water treatment and financing costs. Test combinations rather than changing one variable at a time. Note whether NPV turns negative, whether debt covenants fail, and how much additional equity would be needed.

- Price: use the study’s reference price, then test materially lower prices and delayed price recovery.
- Recovery and grade: reduce both where the flowsheet or resource continuity is unverified.
- Capital and schedule: add contingency and interest during a delay.
- Operating costs: stress energy, reagents, labor, water, transport and waste handling.
- Closure: include a realistic rehabilitation obligation and timing of financial assurance.
Check the route to market and any claimed offtake
Identify the intended product—such as concentrate, lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide—and its specification, qualification process, buyer pool, transport route and pricing reference. Product that cannot meet a buyer’s impurity limits may require additional processing, discounts or a different customer base.
Read every memorandum of understanding, term sheet and offtake contract. Determine whether it is binding, conditional, exclusive, volume-limited or dependent on product qualification, financing, permits or a final investment decision. A non-binding announcement is not secured revenue.
Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategy 2023–2030 notes that concentrated supply chains, opaque markets and limited pricing data can make it difficult to secure offtake, equity and debt finance. Ask who sets the price, whether the reference is transparent, how treatment and refining charges work, who bears transport and insurance, and whether a single buyer creates concentration risk.
Measure funding runway and dilution risk
Map cash on hand and committed funding against the cost and timing of the next technical, permitting and corporate milestones. Include minimum exploration commitments, study costs, deposits for equipment, reclamation security and working capital.
- List cash, restricted cash, grants, credit facilities and strategic funding separately.
- Identify debt conditions, security, covenants, repayment dates and conversion rights.
- Model the shares or ownership likely to be issued in an equity raise, placement, royalty deal or earn-in.
- Check partner obligations and what happens if a partner withdraws or misses a contribution.
- Estimate the runway if permitting or a study takes six or twelve months longer than planned.
Junior proponents often face large capital and energy requirements while seeking equity, debt and offtake at the same time. A technically sound project can still lose value through repeated discounted financings or a forced sale during a weak market.
Apply jurisdiction-specific and investor-specific checks
Mining, environmental, water, consultation, tax and securities rules depend on the host jurisdiction. The investor’s residence and the investment instrument can create additional obligations. Verify the current statute, regulator guidance and filing record rather than applying a checklist from another country.
For example, Australian government guidance last updated 2 January 2026 says acquisitions of mining or production tenements generally require notification regardless of value, subject to exceptions. Foreign-government investor rules and securities acquisitions have separate tests. This is an Australia-specific example, not a rule for projects elsewhere.
Also check the issuer’s exchange disclosures, related-party transactions, options and warrants, prior financings, environmental liabilities, litigation and beneficial ownership. For a private placement, review transfer restrictions, suitability requirements, escrow terms and the possibility that the security is illiquid.
Use a stage-appropriate investment checklist
Before committing capital, write a one-page decision record with evidence, uncertainty and the next value-creating milestone. Compare projects only at like-for-like stages.
- Stage: Name the current study, effective date and work remaining before the next decision gate.
- Resource: Record classification, cut-off grade, drilling support, reporting code and whether reserves exist.
- Metallurgy: Mark each recovery, impurity and product specification as measured, pilot-tested or assumed.
- Permits and social license: List every permit, appeal, land or water conflict and closure obligation.
- Economics: Rebuild the base case and quantify price, recovery, cost and schedule sensitivities.
- Market: Verify buyer qualification, product route, pricing basis and whether offtake is binding.
- Funding: Calculate cash runway to the next milestone and likely dilution if a raise is required.
- Jurisdiction: Confirm local ownership, tax, securities, water and foreign-investment rules with qualified advisers.
The investment question is not simply whether the deposit is large. It is whether the evidence is mature enough for the stage, the remaining uncertainties are financially survivable, and the company can fund and permit the next proof point without destroying the expected return.
