Before buying a jewellery-sector stock, establish exactly how the company makes money, then test demand, metal-price exposure, margins, inventory, cash flow, debt, retail execution and regulation against its latest filings. A rise in gold prices is neither automatically positive nor negative: the effect depends on pricing power, product mix, sourcing, hedging and how quickly inventory turns.
Start with the business, not the share price
“Jewellery company” can describe very different businesses. A branded retailer selling finished pieces to consumers has different economics from a manufacturer supplying stores, a wholesaler, an online marketplace, a watch specialist or a business that also sells bullion-like products. Comparing their revenue growth or margins without separating those models can produce a misleading conclusion.

- Retail, wholesale, manufacturing, franchise and e-commerce shares of revenue.
- Customer segments, such as bridal, gifting, luxury, everyday wear or investment-oriented buyers.
- Revenue, stores, suppliers and manufacturing capacity by country.
A company with substantial wholesale or manufacturing revenue should be compared with similar companies, not mechanically with a pure-play store chain. The first investment question is therefore: what economic activity am I actually buying?

Measure jewellery demand in both volume and value
Jewellery demand has two dimensions that can move in opposite directions. Physical volume measures how much gold or finished product is bought; monetary value measures how much consumers spend. A high metal price can make the value of sales rise even while customers buy fewer grams or lighter pieces.
| Period | Global gold-jewellery demand | Year-over-year change | Demand value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 299.7 tonnes | Down 23% | US$47 billion, up 31% | Consumers bought substantially less gold by weight, while higher prices lifted total spending. |
| Q2 2026 | 278.2 tonnes | Down 17% | H1 value reached US$86 billion, up 22% year over year | Value remained more resilient than tonnage; these are global indicators, not a forecast for one issuer. |
These figures from the World Gold Council cover global gold jewellery, not watches, fashion jewellery, every jewellery material or any single listed company. The Council’s Q2 2026 outlook said elevated prices were likely to continue weighing on jewellery tonnage through the remainder of 2026. Treat that as a sector context, not as a company earnings prediction.
In the issuer’s disclosures, look for unit or weight volumes, transaction counts, ASP, comparable-store sales and product mix. A business can report strong sales value because customers pay more for each item while units fall. Check whether shoppers are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choosing lower carat, lighter-weight or lower-premium products.
- Delaying a purchase until prices or household finances improve.
- Exchanging old jewellery to fund a new purchase.
- Moving toward products marketed as investment or bullion substitutes.
- Trading between channels, such as stores, websites and wholesale partners.
Those behaviours affect margins, inventory and future demand differently. A sales increase driven only by metal-price pass-through is not equivalent to gaining customers or selling more pieces.
Understand how gold and other metal prices flow through the accounts
Metal prices can affect affordability, product weights, inventory values, pricing and reported performance. The direction and size of the effect depend on the company’s contract terms and operating model. Do not assume that a high gold price is automatically a benefit because the company sells gold, or automatically a problem because customers may buy less.

Pricing and customer affordability
Find out how often prices are reset, whether the metal component is shown separately, and how quickly price changes reach stores and online listings. A retailer with strong brand demand may pass through a cost increase; a discount-led chain may absorb part of it, cut weight or promote lower-priced items. Read commentary on carat mix, weight per item and promotional activity rather than relying on revenue alone.
Inventory exposure
When metal is held in finished goods, work in progress or raw materials, a price move changes the economics of stock purchased earlier. The accounting result depends on the inventory method, the timing of sales and any hedges. Compare inventory growth with sales growth and ask whether the company is carrying more value because it owns more pieces or simply because each gram costs more.
Hedging
Read the notes for forward contracts, futures, options or other instruments. Record the metal covered, notional amount, maturity, counterparties, collateral or margin requirements, hedge coverage and accounting treatment. Also identify residual exposure after the hedge. A precious-metals filing can illustrate how forwards and futures are used to hedge inventory, but that example is not a sector-wide standard; each issuer’s policy must be evaluated separately.
Hedges can reduce earnings volatility without eliminating commercial risk. They may lock in an unfavourable price, create cash collateral requirements or cover only part of expected purchases. Reconcile the hedge note with inventory and cost-of-sales disclosures.
Read margins over several periods
Gross margin and operating margin should be reviewed over multiple reporting periods, including a period of rising and falling metal prices if available. Separate the effects of:

- Foreign-exchange movements and acquisitions.
Ask whether margin expansion came from a durable change—better sourcing, higher full-price sell-through or a stronger mix—or from a temporary comparison, hedge gain or inventory revaluation. Compare gross margin with inventory turnover: a very high margin accompanied by ageing stock and heavy markdowns may be less attractive than a lower margin earned quickly with reliable cash conversion.

Stress-test inventory and working capital
Jewellery can tie up significant capital because products are high value, numerous in design and often slow-moving. Accounting profit does not prove that cash is being generated. Build a working-capital review from the balance sheet and cash-flow statement.
| Check | Question to answer | Warning signal |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory growth | Is stock growing faster than sales, stores or transactions? | Persistent divergence without a documented expansion plan. |
| Ageing and turnover | How long does stock remain, and what is the trend in inventory turns? | Rising ageing, more clearance or falling turns. |
| Markdowns and exchanges | How are unsold, returned, exchanged or scrap items valued? | Increasing provisions or opaque exchange assumptions. |
| Payables and supplier credit | Is growth funded by stretching supplier terms? | Payables rising much faster than purchases or sudden term changes. |
| Customer advances | Are deposits or layaway balances material, and when are they refundable? | Large advances supporting cash while obligations are unclear. |
| Operating cash flow | Does cash from operations track reported earnings over several years? | Profit repeatedly positive while operating cash is weak or negative. |
Run at least three scenarios: slower unit sales, a metal-price decline and tighter supplier financing. Estimate the cash released or consumed if inventory turns deteriorate, and check whether borrowing facilities and covenants can absorb the change. A falling metal price can reduce the value of stock and force markdowns even if the company hedged only future purchases.
Evaluate retail execution using the issuer’s definitions
For a store-led business, examine comparable sales, sales per square metre or store, conversion, average transaction value, online growth, returns, customer-acquisition cost and store openings or closures. Track new stores separately from the established base so expansion does not hide weak underlying demand.

Comparable-store figures are not standardised. Signet’s fiscal 2026 annual report, for example, excludes stores until they reach their 12-month anniversary. Another issuer may use a different anniversary, include or exclude relocations, or report currency-neutral figures. Read the exact definition before comparing percentages. Calendar differences, inflation and exchange rates can also make two apparently similar periods incomparable.
Digital sales deserve the same scrutiny as store sales. Determine whether online revenue is incremental or shifted from stores, how returns are counted, and whether fulfilment and marketing costs are included in the reported channel margin. Store closures can raise short-term productivity while shrinking the long-term footprint; assess both effects.
Check balance-sheet strength and capital allocation
Review net debt, lease liabilities, interest expense, liquidity, undrawn facilities, covenant headroom and debt maturities. Retail leases can be economically significant even when headline borrowings look modest. Include lease obligations when comparing leverage across companies with different ownership models.
Then examine how management allocates cash:
- Maintenance and growth capital expenditure for stores, workshops, technology and distribution.
- Dividends and the coverage provided by recurring free cash flow.
- Share repurchases or issuance, including the price paid and dilution.
- Acquisitions, earn-outs and integration costs.
- Expansion into new countries or product categories.
Compare cash from operations with earnings and capital expenditure across several years, not just the latest quarter. A company can report a strong profit while funding inventory and expansion with debt. Conversely, a temporary working-capital build may be sensible if clearly tied to a profitable store rollout and supported by liquidity.
Map geography, currency and regulation
List revenue, sourcing, manufacturing and stores by country. Currency movements affect translated results and the local affordability of imported goods. Import duties, taxes, sanctions, political disruptions and concentration in one supplier or market can alter margins and availability.
Best Value
Check the rules that apply where the company sells:
- Hallmarking and fineness requirements for precious metals.
- Diamond, gemstone and recycled-material disclosures.
- Product labelling, advertising and pricing rules.
- Returns, warranties, deposits and other consumer-protection obligations.
- Anti-money-laundering, know-your-customer and cash-payment limits where relevant.
Business and Industry Standards guidance is relevant to covered sellers in India, but it does not establish requirements elsewhere. Verify current local rules for every market in which the issuer operates, and read any disclosed investigations, recalls, litigation or regulatory penalties.
Compare companies on like-for-like axes
Use a comparison sheet that keeps structural differences separate from management execution. The following framework prevents a high-growth but capital-intensive wholesaler from being mistaken for a high-margin retailer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Axis | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Demand and customer | Customer occasion, income segment, repeat rate, geography and sensitivity to discretionary spending. |
| Product mix | Gold, diamonds, watches, fashion jewellery, services; branded versus unbranded; average price and weight. |
| Channel model | Stores, e-commerce, wholesale, manufacturing and franchises; channel margins and return rates. |
| Geography and currency | Revenue and costs by country, exchange exposure, duties and market concentration. |
| Comparable sales | Growth rate plus the issuer’s precise definition, currency basis and store-age threshold. |
| Metal economics | Pricing cadence, inventory ownership, hedge coverage, counterparties and residual exposure. |
| Profitability | Gross and operating margin, mix, markdowns and reconciliation of adjusted measures. |
| Working capital | Inventory turns, ageing, payables, customer advances and operating cash conversion. |
| Financial risk | Net debt, leases, interest coverage, maturities, covenants and liquidity. |
| Store and digital economics | Productivity, conversion, acquisition cost, fulfilment, closures and returns. |
Use the same fiscal period and currency basis where possible. If a comparable value is not disclosed, mark it as unavailable rather than estimating it from an incompatible metric.
Follow a repeatable filing workflow
- Collect current documents. Download the latest annual report, interim report, earnings presentation, results call transcript if published, debt disclosures and risk factors.
- Build the business map. Record products, channels, customer groups, countries, stores, manufacturing and non-jewellery activities.
- Enter operating data. Capture revenue, units or weight, ASP, comparable sales, gross margin, operating margin and store counts for several periods.
- Reconcile the metal story. Match pricing commentary and hedge notes with inventory, cost of sales and any derivative gains or losses.
- Test working capital. Calculate inventory growth and turnover, inspect ageing and markdown disclosures, and compare operating cash flow with profit.
- Assess financing. List debt, leases, maturities, rates, covenants, available liquidity and planned capital expenditure.
- Map external risks. Review country exposure, currency, duties, hallmarking, consumer rules, litigation and supply-chain concentration.
- Run scenarios. Model weaker volume, lower metal prices, slower inventory turns, higher discounting and tighter credit; identify the cash and covenant impact.
- Only then examine valuation. Use assumptions that reflect the company’s normalized earnings and cash generation, rather than extrapolating a single quarter or a metal-price spike.
Red flags that merit a pause
- Sales value rises while disclosed units, weight or comparable transactions fall, with no explanation of price and mix.
- Inventory and receivables grow faster than revenue and operating cash flow remains weak.
- Management discusses hedging benefits but gives little information on coverage, maturities or collateral.
- Adjusted profit improves while statutory profit, cash generation or interest coverage deteriorates.
- Comparable-store growth cannot be reproduced because the definition changes or excludes a growing share of locations.
- Expansion depends on short-term supplier credit or customer advances with limited liquidity headroom.
- Country, hallmarking, sourcing or consumer-protection exposure is material but absent from the risk discussion.
What this checklist can—and cannot—establish
This process can show whether a jewellery business has understandable demand, credible margins, controlled inventory, adequate liquidity and risks that match its stated strategy. It cannot determine a fair share price, guarantee future gold prices or replace an assessment of your own time horizon, diversification and loss tolerance. Company-specific conclusions require the issuer’s latest filings and the rules in each operating market. Treat global gold-jewellery statistics as context, not as a substitute for the company’s own volumes, customers and cash flows.
