A jewellery retailer can report fast sales growth while tying up more cash in inventory, borrowing heavily, or earning inadequate returns on each new store. Before considering its shares, test the quality of growth: store productivity, inventory turnover, cash conversion, margins by product, supplier resilience, commodity-price exposure, balance-sheet strength and valuation. The checklist below is designed for company-by-company research, not as a buy or sell recommendation.
1. Understand how the retailer actually grows
Start by separating reported revenue growth from the resources required to produce it. Read the latest annual report, audited results and notes, then trace the business over several reporting periods. A larger sales number is useful only if stores are productive, incremental capital earns an acceptable return and cash generation keeps pace with accounting profit.

Same-store performance versus new-store growth
Look for same-store sales or comparable-store growth where the company discloses it. This measure helps distinguish demand at established locations from growth created simply by opening more outlets. Ask whether the company reports the comparable-store population, the period used for comparison and the effect of permanently closed or temporarily disrupted stores.

Store costs and capital intensity
Read rent, employee costs, advertising, utilities and other occupancy expenses alongside store revenue. Rising sales with faster-rising rent or staffing costs can compress operating profit. Also identify the capital required for fit-outs, security, inventory, deposits and working capital before a store reaches a stable run rate.
Returns on capital employed (ROCE), return on invested capital and operating cash flow per store are more informative than revenue alone. Check how the company defines capital and profit, and whether acquisitions, leases, bullion financing or metal loans are included consistently. Location, gold-to-diamond mix, brand strength and operating efficiency can make two stores with similar sales economically very different.
2. Analyse inventory, cash flow and working capital together
Inventory is the central operating asset of a jewellery retailer, so never analyse its balance in isolation. Calculate inventory days consistently, preferably as average inventory divided by cost of goods sold multiplied by 365. If the company reports turnover instead, turnover is generally the reciprocal relationship: higher turnover means inventory is converted into sales more quickly. Use the company’s own definitions and compare like-for-like periods.
What a change in inventory days can mean
- Higher days: could reflect deliberate range expansion, slower-moving designs, higher gold prices, new-store preparation, weaker demand or purchasing ahead of expected price rises. It also means more cash is tied up and may increase financing costs.
- Lower days: may indicate better replenishment and faster sales, but could also signal a narrower assortment or insufficient stock that causes missed sales and dissatisfied customers.
- A sudden change: requires reconciliation to store openings, closures, product mix, commodity prices, acquisitions and accounting-policy changes before drawing a conclusion.
A company risk disclosure in a SEBI-filed prospectus puts the trade-off plainly: “Overstocking increases working capital needs and financing costs, while understocking may negatively impact customer satisfaction and sales.” Treat that as an operating balancing problem, not a simple rule that lower inventory is always better.
Follow the cash
Compare inventory growth with cash from operations. If inventory and receivables rise much faster than revenue while operating cash flow remains weak, investigate whether reported profit is being absorbed by working capital. Then read short-term and long-term borrowings, interest expense, lease obligations and any metal-loan arrangements. A retailer can have positive earnings but limited financial flexibility if it must continually borrow to replenish stock.

The recent SEBI-filed prospectus reports issuer-specific inventory days for fiscal years 2023 through 2025, together with associated revenue figures. Those figures are historical data for that issuer, not a sector standard. Check the filing’s definitions, audited statements and the period-end versus average-inventory basis before comparing the company with another retailer.
3. Test margins against product mix
Review gross margin, operating margin and net-profit conversion over several years. Gross margin shows the spread after the cost of merchandise; operating margin shows how much remains after stores, staff and overhead; cash conversion tests whether those profits become cash. A margin increase is more credible when the company explains the operational or mix change and when cash flow supports it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlain gold, studded jewellery and diamonds
Ask for the revenue and margin contribution of plain gold, studded jewellery, diamonds and other categories where disclosed. Product mix can alter both profitability and inventory requirements. Plain gold may have different gross-margin characteristics from diamond or studded pieces, while higher-value designs can take longer to sell and require more capital per item.
Do not apply a single “normal” jewellery margin to every retailer. A blended margin changes with category mix, sourcing terms, making charges, discounts, wastage, bullion prices and the proportion of wholesale or online sales. Investigate whether reported margin gains came from sustainable pricing and sourcing improvements or simply from a temporary shift toward a higher-margin category.
4. Examine suppliers, sourcing and stock availability
Read the risk factors and notes for supplier concentration. Identify the percentage of purchases from major suppliers, whether the company relies on a small number of manufacturers, and whether procurement is direct, through intermediaries or supported by consignment arrangements. Concentration can improve bargaining power and consistency, but disruption at one important supplier may affect availability across many stores.

Check procurement lead times, import or logistics dependencies, quality-control requirements and the company’s ability to substitute suppliers. Delays can leave popular designs unavailable during peak selling periods, while emergency purchasing may raise costs or reduce margin. Look for disclosures about third-party laboratories, refiners, hallmarking, responsible sourcing and inventory insurance where relevant to the company’s market.

A retailer carrying additional safety stock to protect service levels may show higher inventory days; a retailer operating with lean stock may look efficient until a disruption causes lost sales. Compare the stated sourcing strategy with actual inventory and cash-flow trends.
5. Model gold and diamond price exposure
Commodity prices affect a jeweller in several ways: they change the rupee value of inventory, the cash required to replenish it, customer affordability and purchasing behaviour, and sometimes the margin earned on finished goods. A rising gold price can increase reported revenue even when the number of pieces sold is flat. Conversely, a sharp move can delay discretionary purchases or make customers trade down in weight and design.
Questions to ask about price risk
- Does the company disclose hedging, forward purchases, bullion arrangements or other price-risk controls?
- Are gains or losses from revaluation, hedging and metal loans clearly explained?
- How quickly can selling prices be changed when gold or diamond input costs move?
- Does the retailer carry unusually large quantities of high-value or slow-moving stock?
- Are diamonds and other non-gold categories exposed to separate demand or pricing cycles?
Use caution when comparing periods with very different gold prices. Analyse units, weight, average selling price and revenue where available, rather than treating nominal sales growth as equivalent to volume growth.
Seasonality and occasion-driven demand
Jewellery demand often clusters around festivals, weddings and other occasions. Compare quarterly revenue, margin and cash flow, and identify which periods contain the company’s peak selling season. Growth in a peak quarter may not represent a full-year trend, particularly if the comparison period was unusually weak or strong. Also check whether inventory is deliberately built before the season and then released afterward.

6. Read the disclosures before looking at valuation
Begin with the latest annual report, audited financial statements, notes, risk factors and subsequent exchange filings. The notes often contain the detail needed to interpret headline numbers: inventory categories, ageing, borrowings, leases, related-party transactions, contingent liabilities, segment results and accounting-policy changes.
Balance-sheet resilience
Assess debt maturity, interest coverage, cash balances, undrawn facilities and covenant disclosures. Compare total borrowings with operating cash flow, not just with equity. A retailer with strong sales but fragile liquidity may be vulnerable to a gold-price spike, a seasonal inventory build or a temporary store closure.
Check whether liabilities sit inside subsidiaries, joint ventures or special arrangements that are easy to miss in a summary presentation. Reconcile management’s adjusted measures with audited figures and understand any exceptional items before using a valuation multiple.
Governance and disclosure quality
Look for timely filings, consistent definitions, clear segment reporting and explanations for large year-to-year movements. Repeated changes in reported metrics, unexplained related-party dealings, qualified audit language or late disclosures deserve specific investigation. The NSE filing page hosts company-submitted annual reports; remember that the submissions are provided by the companies, so read the underlying audited documents rather than relying on a summary page.

7. Compare retailers on a like-for-like basis
A useful comparison uses the same accounting definitions, currency, reporting period and store perimeter. Compare inventory turnover and cash conversion first, then margins with product mix in view. Add store productivity, ROCE, supplier concentration, debt and liquidity, and exposure to gold or diamond price changes. Finally, test how each company performs across both peak and non-peak periods.
Best Value
Do not create a universal pass/fail threshold for inventory days, margin or ROCE. Different formats, geographies, ownership of premises, product mixes and sourcing models produce different economics. A metric becomes meaningful when its direction is explained, its definition is stable and its relationship with cash flow makes sense.
8. Treat illustrative industry figures as context, not targets
A CRISIL Research industry illustration filed with SEBI in 2018 models a typical large retail jewellery store. Its assumptions are useful for understanding the mechanics of a store model, but they are historical and explicitly vary with location, product mix, brand strength and operating and working-capital efficiency. They are not forecasts or current benchmarks for a named retailer.
| Illustrative item | Figure in the 2018 model | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Annual revenue for a typical large retail jewellery store | ₹500–600 million | Context for the modelled store only; not a current sector average. |
| Blended gross margin | 16–18% | Changes with gold, diamond and other product assumptions and mix. |
| Inventory days | 150–200 days | Model assumption; definitions and business models must be checked before comparison. |
| Return on capital employed | 20–25% | Calculated from the model’s assumed store capital and EBIT, not an expected return for a current retailer. |
9. Use a disciplined research sequence
- Define the question. Record the company, exchange, reporting currency, investment horizon and the latest filing date. If the company operates outside India, use the filings and rules of its own jurisdiction; SEBI references apply to Indian filings.
- Build a multi-year operating sheet. Capture revenue, comparable-store growth, store count, closures, gross margin, operating margin, inventory, inventory days, operating cash flow, borrowings and interest expense using consistent definitions.
- Reconcile growth to capital. For each store cohort or expansion phase, estimate the capital tied up in fit-out, deposits and inventory, then compare the resulting sales and operating profit with cash invested.
- Investigate unusual movements. Flag abrupt changes in inventory days, margin, debt, receivables, supplier concentration or cash conversion. Read the relevant note instead of assuming the change is operationally positive.
- Stress the business qualitatively. Consider a higher gold price, weaker discretionary demand, a delayed supplier, a poor wedding season and restricted borrowing at the same time. The objective is to identify vulnerabilities, not to manufacture a precise forecast.
- Compare genuine peers. Adjust for product mix, store ownership, geography, accounting policies and reporting dates before ranking companies.
- Value last. Only after understanding earnings quality, liquidity and capital needs should you compare valuation with the company’s own history and genuinely comparable retailers. Verify the latest market price and results immediately before making any decision.
10. Red flags that warrant a deeper file review
- Revenue rises, but operating cash flow repeatedly lags profit as inventory expands.
- Inventory days move sharply without a clear explanation involving stores, prices, mix or seasonality.
- New-store growth accelerates while sales per store, margins or ROCE deteriorate.
- Borrowings and interest costs increase faster than operating profit.
- A small number of suppliers account for a large share of purchases and there is no credible substitution plan.
- Margin improvement is attributed only to broad mix language, with no category or pricing evidence.
- Peak-season growth is presented without a full-year or off-season comparison.
- Definitions of inventory, same-store sales or adjusted profit change between periods.
None of these signals proves that a stock is unattractive. Each identifies a question that the filings, management explanations and subsequent results should answer.

What this checklist can and cannot establish
This process can reveal whether growth appears cash-generative, whether inventory and suppliers create financial risk, how product mix affects margins, and whether the balance sheet can withstand ordinary operating shocks. It cannot establish a current fair value without a specified company, market price, forecast and investment horizon. Before reaching an investment conclusion, verify the chosen retailer’s latest results, filings, market data and applicable regulatory requirements.
