A royalty company may avoid many direct mine-operating costs, but it is not insulated from metal prices, project delays, jurisdictional risks, or weak disclosure.
Understand what the company actually owns
A royalty is a contractual right to receive payment connected to production, revenue, or profit from a property. A stream is different: the company advances money and receives the right to buy a specified amount of future production on terms set by the agreement. Neither label tells you enough to assess the asset; the contract language is what matters.

Two interests with the same stated percentage can have very different economics if one applies to gross revenue and the other to profit after deductions. For each material asset, record the property and covered area, the metal, the payment formula, the rate or purchase terms, the contract duration, and any buy-down, buyback, or competing-right provisions. Check what the company discloses about enforceability, geographic scope, and operator compliance. Gold Royalty identifies contract validity and interpretation, third-party rights, and the operator’s performance of its obligations as potential risks in its August 2026 interim filing.
Separate cash-producing assets from future possibilities
Classify every significant interest by stage: producing, development, or exploration. Then compare recent actual contributions with forecasts. A development-stage interest is not current cash generation; reaching production can depend on financing, permits, construction, infrastructure, commissioning, and subsequent operating performance.

In its August 2026 interim risk disclosure, Gold Royalty said a substantial majority of its interests were on non-producing properties and might never achieve production. That is a company-specific disclosure, not a description of every royalty company. For any issuer, identify the operator’s stated plans and the unresolved steps between the asset’s current stage and potential production.
- Distinguish reported production from planned production.
- Check whether the operator has funding and permits for the next project stage.
- Look for disclosed construction, infrastructure, or commissioning dependencies.
- Do not treat exploration targets or resources as producing reserves or guaranteed future revenue.
Find the portfolio’s real concentrations
A large count of royalties can still conceal dependence on a few assets. Look for revenue contribution by individual property, operator, country or jurisdiction, and metal. Consider whether a disruption, delay, or decision by one operator could materially affect results.

Royal Gold reported that Mount Milligan, Pueblo Viejo, Cortez, and Andacollo together accounted for approximately 55% of its revenue in 2024. This is a historical, company-specific figure—not a current estimate for Royal Gold or a sector benchmark. Use the same property-level check with the latest figures for any company you are assessing.
Trace metal exposure through the contract and the mine
Do not assume a gold or copper label captures the full economic exposure. For each important asset, identify the metal covered by the interest, the metal that drives the mine’s economics, and any by-product contribution. Then check whether payment rates change with metal prices or production levels, or whether the agreement includes thresholds.

Royal Gold’s 2024 Form 10-K says its revenue is directly tied to metal prices and particularly sensitive to gold prices because most of its revenue comes from gold stream and royalty interests. The filing also discusses how price declines can affect operators’ production and development decisions. A copper-linked interest can therefore be affected not only by copper prices, but also by mine costs, other products, and the operator’s choices.
Assess the operator and the jurisdiction
The royalty holder may not run the mine or pay its ordinary operating costs, but its receipts depend on an operator developing and running the property, maintaining permits and tenure, reporting information, and meeting contractual obligations. Review the operator’s execution record and financial capacity alongside the project’s safety, environmental, and community issues.

- Operator: Look for missed milestones, production interruptions, financing pressure, or changes to project plans.
- Permits and tenure: Check disclosed permitting status and whether the rights to operate or explore remain secure.
- Jurisdiction: Consider political and fiscal conditions, environmental rules, and the stability of mineral and property rights.
- Community relations: Review disclosed community concerns or opposition, including Indigenous opposition where relevant.
Gold Royalty’s August 2026 filing lists jurisdictional, environmental, Indigenous opposition, and financing-related risks among the risks that may affect its interests. Apply those checks to the specific property and operator rather than assuming every location presents the same exposure.

A portfolio can contain attractive interests while the issuer’s financing choices create risk for shareholders. Read the latest financial statements for operating cash flow, debt and maturities, interest burden, liquidity, share issuance, and dividend commitments. Consider whether planned growth appears to depend on external financing and whether acquisitions are being made at valuations supported by realistic assumptions.
Gold Royalty identifies acquisition strategy, additional financing, indebtedness, and acquisition valuations among its risks. These are useful questions to apply to any issuer, not evidence that every company has the same financial position.
Check disclosure quality and verify mine information
Read the issuer’s latest annual report and interim filings, then compare project statements with the operator’s current technical and operating disclosures where available. A royalty holder may rely on operator-provided information and have limited access to underlying mine data, so forecasts can be harder to verify than the company’s own reported cash receipts.
- Separate reserves, resources, and exploration targets; they are not interchangeable measures.
- Check the date and source of production, cost, and project-stage figures.
- Compare forecasts with later operator updates rather than treating projections as achieved results.
- Note what the issuer says it cannot independently verify or access.
Royal Gold discusses its reliance on property information from operators and limits on access to underlying information in its 2024 Form 10-K. Gold Royalty’s August 2026 interim filing also describes risks relating to its interests and the information available about them.
Compare companies on economics, not royalty counts
When evaluating more than one issuer, use the same evidence categories for each. A count of interests or a single revenue multiple cannot show whether the portfolio is producing, diversified, contractually durable, or dependent on new capital.

This checklist can clarify business and portfolio risks, but it cannot establish whether a particular share price is attractive, forecast future metal prices, or independently validate mine forecasts. An investment decision also depends on the investor’s own financial circumstances.
