Do not start the installation until you know exactly why the PC is marked unsupported. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check (or confirm eligibility in Windows Update), record each failed requirement, and compare it with the computer’s model and manufacturer documentation. A disabled TPM or Secure Boot setting may be correctable; an incompatible processor usually is not. If you install anyway, Microsoft says the device is unsupported, may have compatibility problems, is not guaranteed to receive updates (including security updates), and may not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty for compatibility-related damage.
Use the checklist below to decide whether a firmware change, an OEM-supported hardware upgrade, a different installation plan, or stopping altogether is the least risky choice.

1. Confirm what “unsupported” means on this PC
The message “This PC doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements for running Windows 11” is not a diagnosis by itself. It can represent one failed check or several. Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements and compare the listed minimums with the exact computer model, not just its marketing name.
Run the official checks first
- Install and run Microsoft’s PC Health Check. Note every failed item exactly as displayed; take a screenshot or write down the wording.
- Check Windows Update for the device’s compatibility result as well. A result that says the PC is not ready does not identify which component is responsible, so retain the PC Health Check details.
- Record the full model number, processor model, installed memory, storage capacity, and firmware mode. For a custom-built computer, record the motherboard model and revision.
- Look up that model in the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s documentation before changing UEFI settings or buying hardware. Microsoft directs device-specific questions to the PC OEM.
Do not assume that a workaround changes the result of these checks. Bypassing an installer warning can produce an installation, but it does not make the hardware supported.

2. Compare every component with Microsoft’s minimums
| Requirement | Microsoft minimum | What to verify | Usually changeable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | Compatible 64-bit CPU, 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores | Exact CPU model and whether it appears on the manufacturer’s supported list | No for clock speed and core count; replacing a CPU may also require a different platform |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Installed capacity and the maximum supported by the device | Often, but only within the model’s supported limits |
| Storage | 64 GB | Drive capacity, free space, health, and whether the installation target is the intended disk | Sometimes; check the device’s upgrade instructions |
| Firmware | UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable | Whether the system is using UEFI and whether Secure Boot is available | Configuration-dependent; a firmware update may be required |
| Security processor | TPM 2.0 | TPM version and whether it is enabled in UEFI | Sometimes enabled or updated; hardware capability varies |
| Graphics | DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver | GPU model and its installed driver | Depends on the device and driver support |
| Display | More than 9 inches, 720p or higher, 8 bits per color channel | Screen size and native resolution | Normally fixed on a laptop or all-in-one |
These are minimum product requirements, not a promise of performance. Meeting them does not guarantee that every application, peripheral, or manufacturer utility will work.
Processor failures are usually platform failures
Microsoft notes that clock speed and core count are inherent to the processor and cannot be upgraded through a setting. A processor can also be “fast enough” yet unsupported because Windows 11 compatibility depends on the processor generation and platform. Do not buy memory or storage expecting either purchase to cure an incompatible-CPU result. A CPU replacement, where technically possible, may require a new motherboard, firmware, cooling solution, or operating-system reactivation; only the OEM’s documentation can establish a supported path.
Memory and storage may be upgradeable
Some laptops and desktops have replaceable RAM or storage, while others solder memory or use a non-replaceable drive. Confirm the supported type, maximum capacity, physical size, and firmware limits for the exact model. A larger disk does not fix a TPM, Secure Boot, processor, graphics, or display failure. Keep enough free space for the upgrade process even when the disk meets the 64 GB capacity requirement.

In Windows Security, open Device security. If there is a Security processor entry, open its details and verify that the specification version is 2.0. Microsoft’s Device Security guidance explains that the absence of that entry can mean the computer has no TPM hardware or that TPM is disabled in UEFI.

If TPM is present but disabled
- Read the OEM’s UEFI instructions for the exact model. Firmware menus differ and a wrong setting can prevent Windows from starting.
- Enter UEFI using the manufacturer’s documented key or Windows’ advanced-startup route.
- Look for a security-device setting. Vendors may label firmware TPM differently from a discrete module; use the term in the device manual rather than copying a menu name from another computer.
- Enable the setting only if the documentation confirms TPM 2.0 support, save the change, and boot back into Windows.
- Run PC Health Check again. Microsoft recommends checking eligibility after hardware or firmware changes; a successful TPM change does not prove that the other requirements pass.
If the manufacturer provides a firmware update that affects TPM, follow its instructions and power-loss precautions. Do not install an unofficial firmware image or purchase a generic module without exact model compatibility evidence.
4. Verify UEFI and Secure Boot capability
Windows 11 requires UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable. “Secure Boot capable” is a hardware and firmware capability; it is not the same as merely seeing a Secure Boot option in a random online guide. Check the current boot mode and the OEM’s instructions before changing it.
Questions to answer before changing firmware
- Is Windows currently installed in UEFI mode or legacy/compatibility mode?
- Does the computer’s firmware support Secure Boot for this model and firmware version?
- Will changing modes make the existing system disk unbootable?
- Does the manufacturer require a firmware update or a specific disk-partition layout?
- Do encryption, recovery software, or a dual-boot configuration need to be suspended or documented first?
Secure Boot changes can affect booting even when no files are intentionally deleted. Back up important data and preserve recovery credentials before making the change. Afterward, rerun the compatibility check rather than assuming that enabling one option resolves the warning.
5. Check graphics, display, and drivers
The graphics requirement is DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver. Verify the actual GPU and the driver supplied for that model, not merely a generic DirectX version shown by a diagnostic tool. An old GPU may lack a supported driver even if the rest of the computer is modern enough.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

The display requirement is a screen larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution and 8 bits per color channel. This is generally fixed on laptops and all-in-ones. On a desktop, verify the monitor that will be used with the installation; a low-resolution or very small panel can fail independently of the tower’s hardware.
6. Decide whether a failed requirement can be remediated
| Failure type | Reasonable next check | Stop and reconsider when |
|---|---|---|
| TPM not detected | Confirm TPM 2.0 capability and an OEM-documented UEFI setting or firmware update | The OEM confirms there is no TPM 2.0 support |
| Secure Boot unavailable | Check UEFI mode, firmware version, and the model’s Secure Boot documentation | The platform is legacy-only or the OEM provides no supported path |
| RAM below 4 GB | Check whether a supported memory upgrade exists | Memory is soldered or the model’s maximum remains below 4 GB |
| Storage below 64 GB | Check for a supported drive upgrade and sufficient free space | The device cannot accept a suitable drive or its firmware has a lower limit |
| Processor unsupported | Verify the exact model and OEM support statement | No supported processor/platform replacement exists; a bypass would leave the central compatibility failure |
| Graphics or display failure | Check the manufacturer’s driver and display specifications | The GPU, driver, or panel cannot meet the stated minimum |
Only the manufacturer can establish whether a particular upgrade is supported. Generic “fix kits,” registry edits, or installation scripts do not provide that assurance and can leave you with an unsupported system plus new boot or update problems.
7. Understand Microsoft’s unsupported-device warning
Microsoft’s support page, Windows 11 on devices that don’t meet minimum system requirements (updated December 12, 2024), says: “Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues.” It also says that devices failing the minimum requirements will not receive Microsoft support, may malfunction because of compatibility or other issues, and are not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates.
Recommended Free Tools
The installation disclaimer uses stronger wording: the PC will no longer be supported and will not be entitled to receive updates, and damage caused by incompatibility is not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. Treat “not guaranteed” and “not entitled” as distinct statements from Microsoft’s own materials; neither is a promise that updates will always be blocked nor a promise that they will arrive.

There is no published failure-rate statistic that tells you how likely an individual unsupported computer is to break. The practical risks are uncertain compatibility, missing or delayed updates, driver problems, application failures, and loss of manufacturer support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Protect data before choosing an installation path
Back up documents, photos, browser data, authentication keys, and any files that cannot be replaced. Microsoft lists OneDrive and an external backup device as examples. Verify that the backup opens from another device; a backup that has never been tested is only a hope.
In-place upgrade
An upgrade started from within the existing Windows installation may preserve files and applications when the installer allows it, but an unsupported-device warning and compatibility problems still apply. Record recovery keys and create a separate backup before proceeding. Do not treat preservation of files during one upgrade as a guarantee that future updates or drivers will work.

Microsoft’s Ways to install Windows 11 guidance warns that booting from installation media for a clean installation “completely wipes the contents of the hard drive and the existing installation of Windows and installs a fresh copy of Windows 11.” That erases files, installed applications, settings, and the existing recovery environment on the selected disk. Confirm the backup, identify the correct disk, and have installation and activation information available before selecting this route.

9. Recheck eligibility after every change
- Make one documented change at a time, such as enabling TPM or installing an OEM-supported memory module.
- Boot into Windows and confirm that the device still starts normally.
- Run PC Health Check again and compare the new result with your written failure list.
- Check Windows Update for the current compatibility status.
- Stop if a new failure appears or if the OEM’s instructions conflict with the installation plan.
This process separates a remediated requirement from an unresolved platform incompatibility. It also gives you a record to use when contacting the manufacturer.
10. Account for the Windows 10 support situation
Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice says standard support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides the free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes described under standard support. Do not assume that staying on Windows 10 means ordinary free security patches continue; check whether an extended or special support option applies to your specific edition and circumstances.
That deadline can make an unsupported Windows 11 installation tempting, but it does not remove the unsupported-device risks. Compare the security and application needs of the computer with the cost of a supported replacement or a manufacturer-approved upgrade.

11. A practical go/no-go decision
- Proceed with a supported fix: the failed item is TPM, Secure Boot, RAM, or storage; the OEM documents the change; and PC Health Check passes afterward.
- Pause for manufacturer confirmation: the result depends on a firmware update, processor-generation list, graphics driver, or unusual storage configuration.
- Decline the unsupported installation: the processor/platform, graphics, display, or firmware cannot meet the requirement, or you cannot accept uncertain updates, compatibility failures, and the loss of support.
- If you install despite the warning: keep a verified backup, expect no Microsoft support entitlement, and know the rollback route before starting.
12. Know how to roll back
Microsoft recommends rolling back immediately after installing Windows 11 on ineligible hardware. If the unsupported installation causes problems, its stated route is Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. The option may not remain available indefinitely, so do not postpone the decision while relying on it as a permanent safety net.
