Before ordering a phone from outside Canada, verify the exact regional model with your intended carrier, check Canadian wireless-equipment approval, confirm warranty and repair options, and estimate duty and taxes for your specific shipment. A matching LTE or 5G band list—or an “unlocked” label—does not by itself guarantee that every Canadian carrier feature will work.
1. Identify the exact phone variant
Start with the full model number, not just the product-family name. A phone sold under the same name in different countries can have different radio bands or other hardware and software features. Ask the seller for the model number, country of sale, condition and proof of purchase before comparing compatibility or warranty terms.

2. Confirm compatibility with your Canadian carrier
Give the carrier the exact model number and ask it to verify eligibility on the network and support for the features you need. Check both radio bands and calling features: a band match alone does not establish that carrier voice services or other carrier-specific features will work.

Rogers says a bring-your-own-device phone needs LTE support and must be able to make calls over LTE (VoLTE). Its BYOD compatibility guidance also covers device compatibility and IMEI checks. For iPhone, Apple’s wireless carrier support and features page for the United States and Canada lists features by carrier; use it alongside the carrier’s check for the exact model.

There is no single LTE/5G band checklist that guarantees every imported phone will work on every Canadian carrier. Ask the carrier to confirm the specific variant and relevant features before buying.
Unlocked status and IMEI
Ask whether the phone is unlocked, then check its IMEI status with the carrier. An unlocked phone is not automatically eligible or approved for use on a carrier’s network. If the seller cannot provide the exact model number or the carrier cannot confirm compatibility, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming the family name is enough.

3. Check Canadian wireless-equipment approval
Network compatibility is separate from Canadian equipment approval. Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) warns that wireless equipment acquired abroad “may not comply with Canada’s wireless equipment standards and can cause interference to domestic wireless networks.” Check the phone’s equipment marking or search ISED’s Radio Equipment List using the model number before ordering.

Read the manufacturer’s warranty terms for the country or region where the phone will be purchased. Coverage may be limited by purchase region, and an authorized service centre may not accept every foreign variant for repair. Ask a service provider whether it can service the exact model and what costs or restrictions apply.

- Samsung: Samsung Canada says its Canadian limited manufacturer warranty does not cover products purchased outside Canada. Its warranty information advises contacting an authorized service centre about repair options for a model.
- Apple: Apple’s iOS warranty terms for Canada and hardware warranty information describe terms that can vary by country or region of purchase. Consumer rights can also vary by province.
Keep the seller’s proof of purchase and warranty terms with your order records. Do not count on Canadian warranty service until the manufacturer or an authorized provider confirms it for that variant.
5. Estimate the full delivered cost
The listing price is only one part of the cost. Duty depends on factors including the goods and their country of origin; the country the parcel ships from is not necessarily the country where the phone originated. Imported goods may also be subject to GST/HST and provincial tax. CRA says the federal GST/HST component is calculated on the Canadian-dollar value including duty and excise tax.

Use current CBSA guidance or an estimator for the specific shipment, and account for the declared value, origin, delivery method and province. CBSA explains duty and taxes for goods imported by mail or courier, payment of duty and taxes on imported goods, and the information to gather about goods you want to import. CRA provides details on GST/HST on imports and exports.

6. Compare the import with a Canadian purchase
Compare the delivered total with the price of the same or closest Canadian-market variant. Include shipping, estimated border charges, likely repair costs if local warranty service is unavailable, and the practical cost of losing a carrier feature you rely on. The checks above identify the relevant trade-offs, but they do not establish a universal savings threshold: calculate the specific purchase before deciding.
