Before importing a Japanese Panasonic Blu-ray recorder, identify its exact model and check its power input, TV tuner, disc-region requirements, service-card needs, video outputs, and repair arrangements. A Panasonic name or HDMI socket does not establish that a recorder will work with US mains or record US television. Specifications differ by model: the DMR-BR100 is one documented example, not a stand-in for every Diga recorder.
Start with the exact model
Ask the seller for a clear photo of the recorder’s rear or underside label, the complete model number, and the original Japanese manual. Match those details to Panasonic’s official specification and FAQ for that specific model. Listings may use broad descriptions such as “Diga” or “works overseas”; neither establishes the compatibility of the unit being sold.

Check the power rating before plugging it in
Read the input rating printed on the unit and in its manual, and compare it with the US outlet and the intended installation. Panasonic lists the DMR-BR100 as AC100V, 50/60Hz on its model specification page (accessed 2026). That rating applies to the DMR-BR100; it does not establish the input rating of another Japanese Panasonic recorder.

If the exact unit is rated for 100 V only, do not plug it directly into US mains. Ask the seller or a qualified technician to specify an appropriately rated step-down transformer for that unit. Do not size a transformer from the DMR-BR100’s approximately 48 W consumption alone: that is a consumption figure for that model, not a complete transformer-sizing recommendation, and startup load and the exact recorder matter.
Decide whether it can record the television you want
Check the tuner standards and the recorder’s input connections against the actual TV service you plan to use. Panasonic specifies the DMR-BR100 for Japanese terrestrial digital and Japanese satellite digital broadcasts (model specification page, accessed 2026). That does not establish support for US over-the-air, cable, or satellite television. The available model-specific evidence does not establish US tuner support for an unspecified Japanese Panasonic recorder.

If your main purpose is recording US television, treat tuner compatibility as a central purchase condition: obtain confirmation for the exact model and the intended signal source before buying. A recorder might still suit disc playback or previously recorded media even if it is not suitable for recording your US television service.
Verify disc playback separately for Blu-ray and DVD
Disc compatibility is model-specific, and Blu-ray and DVD region requirements are not interchangeable. Panasonic’s DMR-BR100 FAQ says that playback requires an NTSC video system and gives these conditions:

| Disc type | DMR-BR100 condition stated by Panasonic |
|---|---|
| Blu-ray Video | NTSC video system and region A |
| DVD Video | NTSC video system and DVD region ALL or a region that includes 2 |
These are Panasonic’s stated conditions for the DMR-BR100 FAQ, not a universal specification for Diga recorders. Check the manual for the exact unit and the markings on the discs you want to play; do not infer DVD behavior from a Blu-ray region-A label.
Check cards and Japanese service requirements
Panasonic’s DMR-BR100 FAQ says a contracted B-CAS card must be inserted to use paid Japanese services. Confirm whether the card is included and whether the relevant Japanese service and contract are available and useful to you. A B-CAS requirement for Japanese paid services is not evidence that the recorder can access American pay-TV services.

Match the outputs to your TV or receiver
Confirm the exact recorder’s available outputs and the inputs on the TV or receiver you intend to connect. Panasonic’s setup guidance for its listed recorders describes HDMI connections to a TV and directs users to check the household antenna arrangement and the relevant model manual. Panasonic also says some models in its current product range have no analog output and cannot be used with a TV that lacks HDMI. Those statements do not establish the outputs of an older imported unit: check that unit’s manual and rear-panel connections.
An HDMI connection only addresses the connection between compatible devices. It does not make a Japanese broadcast tuner compatible with a US signal, change the recorder’s mains rating, or remove disc-region conditions.

Get warranty, returns, and repair terms in writing
Before paying, ask the seller to state in writing how returns, shipping damage, repair handling, and parts are handled. The available information does not establish US warranty or service coverage for an unspecified Japanese model, so do not assume Panasonic US will repair it. Treat the seller’s written terms as a separate purchase requirement, not as proof of technical compatibility.
Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the unit: obtain the exact model number, a label photo, and the original Japanese manual.
- Check mains input: compare the unit’s label and manual with the intended US power setup. If it is 100 V only, get unit-specific transformer guidance before use.
- Check the tuner and signal input: match the stated broadcast standards and connections to the service you want to record.
- Check each disc type: confirm NTSC and the applicable Blu-ray or DVD region conditions for that model and your discs.
- Check cards and services: establish whether a B-CAS or other card and a service contract are needed for your intended use.
- Check display connections: verify the recorder’s outputs against the TV or receiver’s inputs.
- Confirm seller support: get return, shipping-damage, repair, and parts terms in writing.
What Panasonic’s model-specific guidance does—and does not—say
Panasonic’s DMR-BR500 FAQ answers the question “Can it be used at the new residence?” by saying, in translation, that the unit is for use in Japan, works in eastern or western Japan, and cannot be used overseas. That statement is about the DMR-BR500; it should not be attributed to every Panasonic recorder or treated as the DMR-BR100’s specification.
For a disc-only use case, tuner standards and Japanese paid-service access may be less important than the unit’s power rating, disc conditions, and outputs. For recording television, tuner standards and signal inputs become essential. In either case, Panasonic’s model-specific documentation and the physical unit—not the brand name—are the basis for a compatibility decision.
