CEDIA certification can be a useful signal for integrated-system expertise, but it is not a legal requirement or a guarantee of perfect workmanship.
Use the checklist below to compare installers on the same scope. Requirements for electrical work, contracts, deposits and cancellation vary by country, state, province and municipality, so confirm the rules with your local authority before work begins.

1. Start with the person assigned to your project
A company name alone tells you little about who will design, configure, wire and test your system. Ask for the names and roles of the people assigned to your home, then check their experience and credentials. A salesperson may not be the designer or technician who actually performs the work.
Ask about individual credentials
Ask, “Which certifications do you personally hold, and what parts of my project do they cover?” CEDIA credentials belong to individuals. CEDIA maintains a professional directory that can help you verify a claimed credential or locate professionals: CEDIA’s homeowner questions guide and CEDIA’s Smart Home Professional Hiring Guide explain how to use qualifications as one part of a wider assessment.

What CEDIA certification does—and does not—mean
CEDIA certification is a specialty signal for people working with integrated residential technology. It does not replace a trade license where your jurisdiction requires one, and it does not guarantee that every project will be delivered without defects. Treat it as evidence to weigh alongside relevant experience, references, the quality of the proposal and the installer’s fit for your system.
Match experience to the actual job
A technician who has installed a few wireless speakers may not be the right lead for a project involving network design, motorized shades, security, distributed video, climate control, lighting scenes or extensive structured cabling. Ask who will design the system, who will pull cable, who will program automations and who will perform final testing. If subcontractors are involved, identify them before signing.
2. Inspect similar completed work
Request examples that resemble your home and goals, not only attractive photographs. A useful portfolio shows the type of integration, the construction conditions and the level of finish you need. Ask how old each project is and whether the installer still supports it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSpeak with references
Ask for permission to contact owners of comparable installations. Questions should cover schedule accuracy, communication, cleanliness, documentation, training and how the installer handled faults or changes after handover. A refusal to provide any relevant reference is a reason to slow down and compare another candidate.
Look beyond the visible equipment
Examine whether previous work includes labeled racks, accessible service points, organized cabling, reliable network coverage and controls that household members can understand. An impressive showroom demonstration does not prove that the installer can manage your building materials, Wi-Fi dead zones, electrical constraints or renovation timetable.

3. Demand a written, itemized proposal
Do not rely on a verbal quote or a single unexplained total. CEDIA’s Oct. 5, 2026 homeowner guide recommends a written quote that explains equipment, costs, timeline and who will carry out the work. The proposal should let you identify exactly what you are buying and compare it with another proposal on the same basis.
Required proposal sections
| Section | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Design | Drawings, system architecture, device locations, network assumptions, rack or cabinet layout and programming approach. |
| Equipment | Manufacturer and model where known, quantities, accessories, mounting hardware, cabling and any required subscriptions or licenses. |
| Labor | Installation, wiring, configuration, programming, integration, testing, cleanup and disposal. State whether labor is hourly, fixed-price or a mixture. |
| People | Named lead installer, designers, technicians and subcontractors, with responsibility for permits and coordination. |
| Schedule | Design approval, equipment ordering, site work, configuration, commissioning and handover dates, including dependencies on other trades. |
| Exclusions | Painting, wall repair, electrical work, networking supplied by others, builder changes, cloud subscriptions, monitoring and future additions. |
| Changes | The written change-order process, approval authority, labor rates, material markups and how an unexpected condition affects the schedule. |
Compare like with like
Two totals are meaningless if one includes design and testing while the other covers only equipment and installation. Create a comparison sheet and mark each line as included, excluded or not stated. Ask both installers to price the same device count, cable routes, network work, programming, testing and handover. If a cost cannot be established from the proposal, record it as “not stated” and request clarification before selecting a provider.

Insist on change control
Smart-home projects often uncover inaccessible cable paths, inadequate power, weak network coverage or compatibility limits. Your contract should require written approval before extra work proceeds, except for a clearly defined emergency. It should state who can authorize a change, how quickly the installer must provide a price and whether the schedule moves with the change.
4. Verify licensing, permits and insurance locally
Licensing rules depend on location and the work type. A project that includes line-voltage electrical work, new circuits, low-voltage cabling, security equipment or structural alterations may trigger different requirements. Ask which licenses and permits are required in your address and which party will obtain them. Verify the license directly with the relevant state, county, provincial, municipal or other licensing authority; do not treat a logo or an unverified license number as proof.
Request current insurance evidence
Ask for a current certificate or other proof of applicable liability coverage and, where relevant, workers’ compensation coverage. Confirm that the named business and policy dates match the contracting entity. The Federal Trade Commission advises U.S. consumers to ask for proof of insurance and to review written estimates and contracts. See the FTC’s home-improvement scam guidance for the U.S. consumer-protection context.

Separate trade responsibilities
If the installer will coordinate an electrician, builder, network specialist or security provider, the proposal should identify each responsibility. Ask who pulls permits, who schedules inspections and who is liable if another contractor’s work delays commissioning. Never assume that a smart-home specialist is authorized to perform every type of electrical or building work.
5. Read payment, cancellation and contract terms
Get the complete contract before paying a deposit. It should identify the legal contracting party, project address, scope, price, taxes, payment milestones, start and completion conditions, change orders, delay rules, warranty obligations and dispute process.
Use milestone payments
A sensible schedule ties payments to identifiable progress such as design approval, equipment delivery, substantial installation, successful system testing and final handover. The FTC advises consumers not to pay the full amount upfront. Keep enough payment associated with completion of testing, documentation and training so those deliverables are not treated as optional.
Check cancellation rights for your location
Cancellation rules are not universal. In the United States, the FTC describes a three-business-day cancellation right for some contracts signed in a home or away from a seller’s permanent place of business; that rule does not automatically apply to every installation agreement. Read the FTC’s home-security purchasing guidance, then check your state and local rules and the contract’s own cancellation clause. Ask when the period starts, how notice must be delivered, what happens to custom-ordered equipment and which deposits are refundable.
6. Ask how software, subscriptions and future changes are handled
A smart-home system is both hardware and software. Controllers, mobile apps, cloud services, firmware and third-party integrations can change after installation. The OECD’s report Consumer Policy and the Smart Home notes that software licensing terms can affect repair, modification, peripherals and resale.

Put ownership and access in writing
Ask who owns purchased equipment, configuration files, custom programming and administrator accounts. Confirm that you will receive the credentials and documentation needed to operate the system if you change providers. Ask whether a subscription is required for remote access, recording, monitoring, voice control or other features, who bills it and what happens when it is canceled.
Plan for discontinued components
Ask what happens if a device, cloud service, integration or software platform is discontinued or no longer supported. The installer should explain likely replacement paths, whether a substitute can be integrated without redesigning the whole system and what labor or licensing charges would apply. Avoid a proposal that makes ongoing service essential without stating the terms and cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Define commissioning, training and handover
“Installed” should not mean merely mounted and powered. CEDIA describes professional work as including design, installation, configuration, handover and aftercare: its explainer details those stages.
Require a full-system test
Have the contract list commissioning tests: network coverage in required rooms, device control, scenes and schedules, audio and video routes, security notifications, remote access, power recovery, backups and integrations with other trades. Ask for a written punch list and a date for correcting failed items.
Get usable documentation
Handover materials should identify equipment locations, model numbers, network and rack diagrams, account ownership, passwords transferred through a secure method, configuration backups, maintenance instructions and warranty contacts. If a future technician cannot understand the installation without calling the original salesperson, the documentation is incomplete.
Best Value
Schedule training for everyone who needs it
Specify who will be trained and what training covers: everyday controls, adding or removing users, responding to alerts, restarting equipment safely, using manual overrides and requesting support. Ask whether a follow-up session is included after household members have used the system for a few weeks.
8. Clarify warranty, support and recurring charges
Separate manufacturer warranties from the installer’s workmanship warranty. Ask how long each lasts, what labor and travel are covered, how claims are submitted and whether removing a device affects coverage. Put the support contact, response expectations and after-hours process in writing.
Expose continuing costs
List every recurring charge, including monitoring, cloud storage, remote management, software licenses, cellular backup or preventive maintenance. Ask whether support is included for a defined period or billed per incident, and obtain the rates before signing. Also ask what a future upgrade, reprogramming visit or replacement of a failed component normally involves.

When several candidates appear credible, score the same evidence rather than choosing the lowest headline price. The sources do not establish a universal scoring formula or an expected project price, so use a transparent checklist that reflects your priorities.
| Criterion | Evidence to compare |
|---|---|
| Project fit | Experience with your building type, system complexity, construction stage and accessibility needs. |
| Individual capability | Credentials and relevant experience of the named lead designer and installers. |
| Past work | Comparable completed projects, references and evidence of long-term support. |
| Scope clarity | Itemized design, equipment, labor, configuration, testing, exclusions and handover. |
| People and coordination | Named workers, subcontractors, trade responsibilities and communication route. |
| Schedule and disruption | Milestones, dependencies, working hours, access needs and cleanup commitments. |
| Commercial terms | Payment milestones, change-order method, cancellation terms and total cost for identical scope. |
| Compliance | Verified local licenses, permits and current insurance appropriate to the work. |
| Aftercare | Commissioning tests, documentation, training, warranty, support and recurring fees. |
Keep the proposals, license checks, insurance evidence, reference notes and unanswered questions together. If one installer will not provide the information needed for a fair comparison, that omission is itself decision-relevant.
10. Treat these warning signs as a pause, not a bargain
- A vague or verbal-only quote with no equipment, labor or exclusion breakdown.
- No references or portfolio examples from projects similar to yours.
- An unusually low estimate with no explanation of what has been omitted.
- Pressure to sign immediately, pay in full or approve work before reading the contract.
- Reluctance to identify the actual workers or subcontractors.
- No candid answer about licenses, permits or insurance.
- Promises of “lifetime” support without written scope, response terms or cost.
- No plan for testing, documentation, training or correcting defects.
- Unclear ownership of accounts, programming files or subscription services.
Any one issue may have an innocent explanation, but the installer should resolve it in writing before you commit. If answers remain evasive, obtain another proposal.
11. Questions to ask in the final interview
- Which certifications do you personally hold, and which parts of my project do they cover?
- Who will perform design, wiring, programming and testing, and which tasks are subcontracted?
- Can I see comparable completed projects and speak with references?
- What exactly is included in design, equipment, labor, configuration, testing and handover?
- What is excluded, and how are unexpected conditions and change orders approved and priced?
- Which licenses and permits are required for this address, and who obtains them?
- Can you provide current proof of insurance for the contracting business and workers?
- What tests define successful commissioning, and when will I receive documentation and training?
- Who handles support, software or configuration problems, repairs and future upgrades?
- What warranties apply to equipment and workmanship, and what recurring service charges continue after installation?
- What are the payment milestones, cancellation rules and treatment of custom-ordered equipment?
- What happens if a component, cloud service or software integration is discontinued?
12. A practical sign-off checklist
- Interview at least two installers whose experience matches the project.
- Verify the assigned individuals’ credentials and comparable references.
- Check licenses and permits with the relevant local authority.
- Obtain and verify current insurance evidence.
- Reconcile proposals line by line on identical scope.
- Resolve every exclusion, subscription, change-order and subcontracting question.
- Read payment, cancellation, warranty and dispute terms before paying.
- Confirm ownership of accounts, programming and documentation.
- Write commissioning tests, training and handover deliverables into the contract.
- Keep a signed copy and all approved changes in one project file.
The best choice is the installer who can demonstrate relevant individual competence, explain the complete scope, meet local legal requirements and commit to a documented handover and support path. Certification may strengthen that case, but the written evidence and project fit should decide it.
