Ordinary Pakistani passport holders who plan to visit Beijing and enter mainland China should obtain the appropriate Chinese visa before flying. Pakistan is not on Beijing’s list for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. A separate 24-hour transit exemption may cover a qualifying passenger who continues to a third country or region and stays within the relevant port; it is not a short-visit visa waiver.
Rules differ for diplomatic and official passport holders, and transit eligibility depends on the full itinerary—not simply on having a connection in Beijing. Check the exact route with the airline and the relevant Chinese authorities before departure.

First decide whether you are visiting China or only transiting
If your destination is Beijing, or you intend to leave the port to visit the city, an ordinary Pakistani passport holder should apply for the visa appropriate to the purpose of travel. A transit exemption does not substitute for a visit visa.

A Beijing connection by itself does not establish eligibility.

Which rule applies to a Pakistani passport holder?
| Travel situation | What the published rule says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Pakistani passport; entering mainland China for a visit | Arrange the appropriate Chinese visa before travel. Pakistan is not listed for Beijing’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy. Chinese Embassy in Pakistan: visa application instructions; Beijing Municipal Government: transit policy | Visa category and its supporting documents; passport validity; current application routing and processing details. |
| Ordinary Pakistani passport; qualifying onward transit under 24 hours | China’s separate 24-hour transit exemption may apply to qualifying passengers with confirmed onward travel to a third country or region who remain within the corresponding port. A passenger who needs to leave the port must apply for a temporary entry permit; approval is not automatic. Chinese Embassy in Pakistan: visa exemption notice; National Immigration Administration: transit guidance | Confirmed onward ticket, destination entry permission where required, total time in China, applicable port, and whether a temporary entry permit is needed. |
| Pakistani passport holder seeking Beijing’s 240-hour transit policy | Pakistan is not among the 57 nationalities listed on Beijing’s current policy page. Beijing Capital and Beijing Daxing are designated ports, but using either does not make an unlisted nationality eligible. Beijing Municipal Government: 240-hour transit policy | Do not rely on this policy with an ordinary Pakistani passport. If the traveler holds another passport, check that nationality and the full permitted itinerary against the current rules. |
| Pakistani diplomatic or official passport | The Embassy of China in Pakistan lists separate exemptions: up to 30 days in mainland China and Hong Kong SAR for diplomatic and official passport holders; its Macau provision is for diplomatic passport holders, up to 14 days. Chinese Embassy in Pakistan: visa exemption notice | Confirm that the passport type and destination match the stated exemption and verify the current conditions before travel. |
Understand the two transit exemptions
24-hour transit: limited to qualifying passengers and port rules
The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan describes the exemption as applying to foreign nationals traveling through China by international flight, ship, or train to a third country or region, with valid international travel documents and confirmed connecting tickets, when the stay does not exceed 24 hours and the passenger remains within the corresponding port. It is not a general waiver for a brief visit to Beijing.
If a transit passenger intends to leave the port, the passenger must apply to border inspection for a temporary entry permit. Permission is not automatic, so do not plan a city visit on the assumption it will be granted. Check the exact connection and port arrangements with the airline and authorities.

240-hour transit: Beijing’s current list excludes Pakistan
The Beijing Municipal Government’s current page describes a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy for nationals of 57 listed countries in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei. Pakistan is not on that list. Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport are named entry and exit ports. The policy’s duration and nationality list do not make it available to every traveler connecting through Beijing.
For nationalities that are listed, the page describes requirements including a valid passport, a visa for the onward destination if that destination requires one, a completed arrival/departure card, and an onward ticket with a confirmed seat. Travelers are to inform the airline, apply for a transit stay permit at immigration, and follow the permitted regional itinerary. The page’s title and URL retain “144hour” wording, but its body gives the current duration as 240 hours; use the updated body for the stated duration and eligibility, and confirm the actual itinerary with the airline and immigration authorities.

How to apply for a Chinese visa in Pakistan
- Choose the visa category for your purpose. The required evidence varies by category and circumstances. Do not treat a business or exchange visa checklist as a universal tourist-visa checklist.
- Complete the COVA online form. Upload a digital ID photo, then print the application form and confirmation page and sign them as directed by the Embassy of China in Pakistan.
- Check the district and intake location. Submit through Gerry’s Chinese Visa Application Service Center according to your permanent-residence consular district. The Embassy lists intake locations in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. Its instructions say Lahore consular work is handled by the Embassy in Islamabad for Punjab residents other than Rawalpindi. Confirm current routing with the center before filing.
- Prepare baseline and category-specific documents. The Embassy’s instructions call for a passport valid for more than six months with at least one blank visa page, a copy of the passport information page, the printed COVA form and confirmation page, and a digital ID photo. Pakistani applicants also provide copies of both sides of their national ID card. Additional items depend on the visa category and circumstances; consult the current official checklist.
- Allow for variable processing time. The Embassy says it generally needs four working days after the application center forwards the file. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed end-to-end decision date; supplementation, interviews, or other case factors can add time. The Embassy says fast service is unavailable.
For specified F- and M-visa circumstances where the listed invitation letter is unavailable, the Embassy’s published instructions call for a latest six-month personal bank statement showing US$100 per day or the equivalent in Pakistani rupees. This is a circumstance-specific requirement, not a universal financial threshold for every visa application. Check the applicable category instructions at the Embassy’s visa application page.

- Passport and purpose: Confirm whether you hold an ordinary, diplomatic, or official passport, and whether you are entering China or continuing in transit.
- Visa or transit basis: For an ordinary-passport visit, obtain the appropriate visa before travel. If relying on transit, verify nationality eligibility, onward destination, confirmed seat, total time in China, applicable port and itinerary, and any destination visa requirement.
- Leaving the port: If you need to leave the port during a 24-hour transit, ask the border inspection authority about a temporary entry permit; do not assume permission.
- Application details: Confirm passport validity and blank-page requirements, consular-district routing, the latest category checklist, and processing arrangements with the Embassy or authorized center.
- Boarding and entry: Ask the airline to check document requirements for the exact itinerary. Airline boarding decisions and immigration decisions are separate; the published rules do not determine an individual case or guarantee boarding or entry.
