Before paying for an online digital-skills program, define the job or next step you want, then verify that the curriculum, credential, total price, support and advertised outcomes actually lead there. A polished sales page is not proof that employers recognize the certificate or that graduates find work. Use the checks below to compare programs on evidence rather than promises.
Start with the outcome, not the course catalog
Write down the result you want in one sentence: for example, “I want an entry-level data-analyst role,” “I need the certification required for my current job,” or “I want transferable credits for a degree.” That target determines what to verify.

Translate the goal into hiring or transfer requirements
Review current job postings for the role and note recurring requirements: specific software, technical skills, portfolio projects, work experience, industry certifications, degrees or state licenses. Ask employers, hiring managers or a professional association which training they consider useful. Some digital jobs judge applicants mainly by demonstrated work; others screen for a particular certification or degree. A course’s own statement that it is “career ready” is not independent confirmation.
If your next step is education rather than employment, ask the receiving college or university whether it accepts the provider’s credits, how many will transfer and whether they count toward the intended program. A certificate of completion is not automatically a professional credential, academic credit or license.

Decide whether a formal program is necessary
Compare the program with less expensive or more direct routes: individual community-college courses, public workforce training, apprenticeships, employer-paid learning, vendor documentation, supervised projects or a recognized examination. A structured program can be worthwhile when you need instruction, feedback and accountability, but paying for a course that does not satisfy the requirement you identified wastes both money and time.
Verify the provider and what the credential means
Check accreditation when it matters
For U.S. institutions where accreditation affects aid, transfer or employer screening, look up the school in the U.S. Department of Education’s accreditation database. The Department explains that it does not accredit schools itself; independent accrediting agencies perform that role. Check whether the listed accreditor is recognized for the type of institution and program involved.
Accreditation is only one check. It does not guarantee that a curriculum is current, that a particular employer accepts the certificate or that the program qualifies you for a regulated occupation. Ask an intended employer or transfer institution directly, and keep the response in writing.

Check state and occupational rules
If the advertised career is regulated—such as a role requiring a state license, examination or supervised hours—contact the licensing agency in the state where you plan to work. Confirm the education, clinical or practical requirements, approved-provider rules and any state-specific disclosure the school must provide. A program that qualifies students in one state may not meet another state’s rules.
Identify exactly what you receive
Request the credential’s precise name, issuing organization, date of award, renewal requirements and any external examination required. Ask whether the final assessment is proctored, whether projects are graded by an instructor and whether you can show completed work to employers. If the program advertises “certification,” determine whether that means a school-issued completion certificate or a credential awarded by an independent professional body.

Calculate the complete price before you enroll
Get a written cost sheet and keep it with the enrollment contract. The advertised tuition may cover only instruction, not the items required to finish.
Use this total-cost checklist
- Tuition for every course or the full program, with the billing schedule.
- Enrollment, technology, student-service, proctoring and graduation fees.
- Books, practice exams, hardware, peripherals and other supplies.
- Required software subscriptions, cloud credits or lab access.
- External examination, certification or state-licensing fees.
- Interest, origination charges and other costs of a payment plan or loan.
- Late-payment, course-change, extension, pause, withdrawal and cancellation charges.
- Any cost to repeat an assessment or regain access after a missed payment.
Ask whether the quoted amount is per course, per term or for the complete sequence. Confirm what happens if you add, drop or repeat a class. Compare the resulting total—not the headline tuition—with alternatives such as public workforce programs, community colleges, apprenticeships and employer training.
Read financing and cancellation terms
Review the promissory note, payment-plan agreement and refund policy before signing. Find the exact deadline for cancellation, the method required to submit a request and the amount you would owe after starting lessons. Ask whether a “trial” period still creates a loan obligation, whether missed payments are reported and whether financing continues if you stop participating.
Do not rely on a recruiter’s verbal assurance that you can cancel later. If a term is unclear, ask for a written explanation and save the response. A low monthly payment can conceal a high total repayment.
Test completion, employment and salary claims
Outcome statistics are useful only when their definitions and populations are clear. Ask every provider for the same information so that comparisons are meaningful.

Questions to ask about completion
- What period and student cohort does the completion rate cover?
- Who counts as enrolled: everyone who paid, students who began coursework or another group?
- How many students were included, and how many were excluded or lost to follow-up?
- Does “completion” mean finishing all lessons, passing a final assessment or receiving the credential?
Questions to ask about placement
- What is the job-placement rate, and over what measurement period?
- How does the provider define “placed”? Must the job be in the trained field, full-time, permanent or above a wage threshold?
- Are graduates who already had jobs counted?
- How many graduates responded, and how were employment records verified?
- Are internships, unpaid work, freelance projects or further education included?
- What employers and job titles are represented, and are the roles available in your location?
Request salary figures with the same cohort, geography and timeframe. A median, average and highest reported salary are different measures; ask which one is being shown. Compare claims with independent public information where available, and treat an answer that cannot be documented as an unverified marketing statement.

In March 2025, the Federal Trade Commission said it was sending 42,794 payments totaling more than $15.5 million to people who paid for Career Step’s online training programs. The payments followed allegations involving claims about job placement, externships and hiring partnerships. This is a specific enforcement example, not evidence that every provider misleads students; it does show why definitions, records and written evidence matter.
The FTC’s consumer guidance puts the central limitation plainly: “No school can guarantee you a job when you graduate.” Treat any guarantee, unusually high placement rate or vague reference to “hiring partners” as a prompt for detailed questions, not as proof of an outcome.
Inspect the curriculum and the learning experience
Match lessons to real work
Request the current syllabus, module list, project briefs and assessment criteria. Map each major job requirement you identified to a lesson or graded project. Look for practice that produces evidence you can show an employer: a portfolio, code repository, analysis, design case study, security exercise or other work appropriate to the role.
Ask when the curriculum was last updated and which software versions, standards or exams it follows. A course can be accredited yet still teach tools that employers no longer use.

Find out how instruction works
Clarify whether the program is self-paced, scheduled live, or a mixture. Ask:
- How quickly do instructors answer questions?
- Who provides feedback on projects, and how detailed is it?
- Are office hours, tutoring or technical support included?
- What happens when a lab, login or required application fails?
- Can you see a sample lesson, assignment and grading rubric?
- How many students are in a live class?
- What are the instructors’ relevant qualifications and recent industry experience?
Speaking with recent students can reveal workload, feedback quality and support delays that a sales presentation will not show. Ask for contact with current or former students without requiring them to use a provider-selected script or testimonial.
Check schedule and access rules
Record the expected weekly workload, live-session times, attendance rules, time-zone assumptions and maximum completion window. Ask whether you can pause for work or family obligations and whether a pause extends access without an extra charge. Confirm how long recordings, labs, software licenses and instructor support remain available after the final payment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Confirm computer, software and internet requirements
Obtain the exact technical specification in writing before buying equipment. Ask for the required operating system version, processor or memory requirements, available storage, camera or microphone needs, browser support, internet speed, security settings and any peripheral devices. Requirements can differ between a basic lesson and a local development or video-editing lab.
Separate what the provider supplies from what you must buy
- Is a computer included, loaned or entirely your responsibility?
- Are software licenses, virtual labs, cloud credits and exam vouchers included for the whole enrollment period?
- Can you use a school lab or remote desktop instead of purchasing a higher-specification machine?
- What happens when a license expires, a lab reaches a usage limit or a device fails?
- Are accessibility tools, captions, transcripts and alternative formats available?
The available guidance supports checking equipment and materials, but it does not establish that every digital-skills course requires a new laptop or any particular specification. Do not purchase hardware until the provider confirms the minimum requirements and what it supplies.

Review the contract, privacy terms and support obligations
Read the enrollment agreement, terms of service, privacy notice, refund policy and any financing documents in full. Look for clauses covering automatic renewals, data use, recorded sessions, intellectual-property ownership of your projects, dispute procedures, arbitration, account suspension and access after withdrawal.
Ask who owns work you create in the course and whether the provider may publish your name, image or project. If you will use personal or employer data in assignments, confirm how it must be anonymized and stored. Check what student support is promised in writing and what is merely described as an aspiration.
Recognize pressure tactics and investigate complaints
Warning signs before payment
- A recruiter insists that a discount expires immediately or that you must enroll during the call.
- You are discouraged from consulting employers, a licensing agency or another school.
- The provider will not send the syllabus, contract, refund terms or financing offer before taking payment.
- Outcome claims use “up to,” “as much as” or “our graduates” without a cohort, denominator or definition.
- Questions about accreditation, equipment or cancellation receive vague answers or are redirected to a different salesperson.
- You are told that a job or salary is guaranteed.
Pause the enrollment when any of these occurs. Request the documents by email, compare them with another route and give yourself enough time to read them. Pressure to commit before review is itself useful information about how the provider may treat students later.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck complaints without overinterpreting them
Search the relevant state education or licensing agency and state attorney general for complaints, enforcement actions and required disclosures. You can also check consumer-protection records and ask the provider how it resolved recurring issues. Few complaints do not prove that a provider has no problems; a small school may simply have fewer students or less reporting.
Use a side-by-side comparison before deciding
Place each provider’s written answers in one worksheet. Do not rank a program on an outcome percentage until its definition, cohort and measurement period are comparable to the others.
| Decision area | Evidence to collect | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Target outcome | Job postings, employer feedback, transfer or licensing requirements | Does this program satisfy a requirement or build evidence for the next step? |
| Credential | Exact award, accreditor, external exam, state disclosures | Will the employer, school or licensing agency recognize it? |
| Curriculum | Current syllabus, projects, software versions and assessment rubric | Will you practice the skills actually requested? |
| Instruction | Instructor access, response times, feedback, class size and schedule | Can you get help and meaningful critique when stuck? |
| Total cost | Tuition, fees, equipment, software, exams, financing and cancellation terms | What is the full amount you could owe under several scenarios? |
| Outcomes | Completion and placement definitions, cohort size, salary data and documentation | Are the figures verifiable and relevant to students like you? |
| Practical fit | Hardware, internet, accessibility, workload, pause policy and support hours | Can you complete the program with your available time and setup? |
A final go/no-go checklist
Enroll only after you can answer “yes” to the items that matter for your goal:
- I can state the job, credential, transfer or licensing outcome I am pursuing.
- I checked requirements with an employer, receiving institution or licensing agency rather than relying only on the provider.
- I know whether the credential is school-issued, externally certified, transferable or license-qualifying.
- I have a written total price that includes equipment, software, exams, financing and exit costs.
- I understand the refund, cancellation, pause and withdrawal rules.
- I received a syllabus and know how instruction, feedback and technical support work.
- I confirmed the exact computer, internet and software requirements and what the provider supplies.
- I can explain the completion and placement statistics, including cohort, timeframe and definitions.
- I had time to read every contract and was not pressured to pay before doing so.
If a provider will not supply the information needed to complete this checklist, postpone enrollment and consider another route. The goal is not to find the most impressive advertisement; it is to choose training whose requirements, price and evidence match the outcome you need.
