Before enrolling your child, ask to see the club’s safeguarding and complaints policies, identify who leads safeguarding and first aid, and find out how adults are recruited, checked, trained and supervised. Check the premises, emergency plans, consent practices, online safety and how the club will meet your child’s health, disability and personal-care needs. Ask to visit before the first session; if possible, observe one.

In England, children’s clubs do not all sit within one regulatory framework, and their staff and volunteers are not typically inspected or assessed by a regulator. The Department for Education’s parent guidance is specific to England; rules, check terminology and reporting routes can differ elsewhere. A well-run provider should welcome questions.

Ask who is responsible for safeguarding

Request the club’s child-protection or safeguarding policy. It should identify the person responsible, explain how a child or parent can raise a concern, and set out what happens after a disclosure or allegation. Ask who the safeguarding lead is, what training they have completed and when it was last refreshed. Find out how children themselves can report a worry and how parents will be informed about concerns.

Ask to see the complaints policy too. You should be able to identify whom to contact, how a complaint is handled and what happens if you are not satisfied with the response. The England Department for Education advises parents to raise an unresolved concern with the provider first, then escalate safeguarding issues to the local authority designated officer or the NSPCC. These routes and legal terms are England-specific; contact the appropriate safeguarding authority where you live. If a child is in immediate danger in England, call 999.

Find out how adults are recruited and supervised

Ask: “What checks do you undertake to make sure staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children?” Follow up on how the club selects and supervises adults, what references and role-appropriate criminal-record checks it uses, and what safeguarding training staff receive. Ask whether staff know how to respond if a child discloses abuse.

No single check establishes that someone is suitable. Find out whether adults who are not club staff or volunteers may be present, and whether any one-to-one contact takes place. Ask how the club sets boundaries for adult-child contact, mobile devices and social media, and whether parents are told about any one-to-one arrangements.

If the activity has a governing body or association, ask whether the club is affiliated and what safeguarding standards apply. Affiliation may be useful context, but it does not replace checking the club’s own policies and day-to-day practices.

Check supervision, the venue and emergency readiness

Visit the space before your child starts. Check that it is clean and safe, exits are clear, and supervision appears adequate for the activity and the children attending. Ask who is in charge of first aid, whether that person is trained, and whether a first-aid kit is available.

Ask how the club handles fire and other emergencies and whether it has assessed the risks of injury or illness associated with its activities. Request relevant health-and-safety arrangements and evidence of public liability insurance. The England guidance says large providers should have a written health-and-safety policy.

Make sure the club can support your child

Tell the club about relevant medical conditions and allergies, and provide current emergency contacts. Ask how it stores that information, who can access it and whether it will be shared. The England guidance says providers should seek updated information when a child has attended for more than a year.

Discuss participation expectations and whether the club can provide appropriate support during sessions and activities.

Clarify consent, photography and online safety

Ask what written consent is required for participation, travel and photography or video. Find out when and where images may be used and how the club records your preferences. If transport or travel is part of the activity, clarify the arrangements and who is responsible for children during the journey.

Ask whether children can access the internet, how access is supervised and made age-appropriate, and whether the club has an online-safety policy. Venue filtering may not cover a child’s own device or mobile-data connection, so ask how the club manages those as well. Find out what rules apply to children’s phones, staff contact with children online and social-media use.

Compare clubs on the same practical criteria

If you are choosing between providers, compare what each can show and explain rather than relying on a numerical rating. There is no universal scorecard established by the cited guidance.

What to compare Questions to ask
Safeguarding Is there a clear policy, a named lead, current training and a child-accessible way to report concerns?
Adults and supervision How are adults selected, checked, trained and supervised? Are visitors or one-to-one situations addressed?
Venue and emergencies Are the premises safe, first aid available, emergency procedures clear and insurance in place?
Consent and communication Are complaints, parent contact, travel, participation and photo or video permissions explained?
Individual support Can the club meet your child’s health, disability, medication and personal-care needs?
Digital safety and information Are internet access, devices, social-media contact and the handling of children’s information covered?

Recognise warning signs and decide what to do

Pause before enrolling, seek clear answers or consider another provider if the club has no identifiable safeguarding lead or complaint process, cannot explain its consent arrangements, has no first-aid lead or kit, or cannot describe its emergency plan. Unsafe premises, inadequate supervision, unexplained adults on site, or unsupervised one-to-one contact without parental consent also merit concern.

Take particular care if staff cannot explain their relevant checks and training, do not know how they would respond to a safeguarding concern, or the club has no online-safety policy. A provider’s response to reasonable questions is itself useful information: ask for policies and explanations before your child attends, and do not rely on verbal reassurance where you need a clear procedure.

The detailed parent guidance cited here is for England. For requirements and escalation contacts elsewhere, check with the relevant local safeguarding authority; the Australian and Victorian parent resources offer additional perspectives but are not rules for England or other jurisdictions.
