Before authorizing a game-statistics or progress tracker, verify the developer, confirm that the game publisher permits its access method, and start the connection through the platform’s genuine authorization screen. Read every permission, review the tracker’s privacy policy, and find the account’s revoke or unlink control before you approve anything. Never give a tracker your game password directly.
An official sign-in flow can issue a limited authorization token instead of disclosing your password, but that does not make every third-party app safe or permitted. Account authorization, in-game behavior, and the tracker’s own data practices are separate questions.

A pre-authorization checklist
Use this checklist before clicking Allow, Authorize, Link, or Continue. A tracker should be able to explain what it does, why it needs each permission, how long it keeps data, and how you can disconnect it.

How an official authorization flow works
Some platforms use OAuth2-style authorization. Riot’s developer documentation describes its Riot Sign On (RSO) flow this way: a player is redirected to sign in and authorize a third party, which receives access to permitted account or game information without receiving the player’s password. The token is useful because it can be limited and revoked independently of the password.

That protection applies only when you are actually on the platform’s authorization flow. A tracker can imitate a sign-in page, so inspect the address, branding, and transition carefully. If the page is an unrelated form, stop. Close it, open the tracker from its independently verified official source, and begin again. A legitimate authorization screen should identify the platform, the requesting application, and the information or scopes involved.
Step 1: Identify the app and its requested feature
Verify who operates it
Record the developer name shown in the app, the publisher name on the platform consent screen, and the company named in the privacy policy. Check that the support address and official website are consistent. A familiar-looking name is not enough if the authorization screen identifies a different operator.
Match access to the feature
Write down what you want the tracker to do: for example, display match history, show achievements, or synchronize progress. Then compare that purpose with the requested data. A request for gameplay statistics may be understandable for a statistics dashboard; a request for unrelated profile details or account-management powers deserves an explanation before approval. This is a practical comparison, not a universal rule that every platform uses the same permission categories.
Step 2: Start from the genuine platform sign-in page
- Open the tracker from a source you trust. Avoid links sent in unsolicited messages or pop-ups.
- Choose its connect or sign-in option. The next screen should be the game platform’s own authorization page or an official in-client flow.
- Check the requesting application name and account. Make sure you are authorizing the intended tracker for the intended game account.
- Sign in only on the platform page. Do not enter the game password into a tracker-owned form and never send it to the operator.
- Read the consent screen before selecting Allow. Capture or note the permissions so you can compare them with the tracker’s stated purpose.
Epic says an Epic account can be used by a product or service to verify identity, while access to other information requires explicit consent. Epic also states that passwords and payment details are not shared with third-party products through this sign-in. That boundary does not mean every other platform offers the same one, so read the notice shown for your account.

Step 3: Examine every permission
Permissions are the practical limit of what the platform makes available to the app. PlayStation gives online status and gameplay information as examples of data that can be shared with authorized apps. Those examples do not describe every PlayStation app, and they should not be generalized to Epic, Riot, or another service.
- Identity: Determine whether the app receives only an account identifier or additional profile information.
- Presence: Check whether online status or activity visibility is included.
- Gameplay data: Note whether the app receives match, achievement, progression, or other game information.
- Account controls: Treat any ability to change settings, manage friends, or perform actions as substantially more sensitive than read-only statistics.
- Optional scopes: If the platform lets you decline individual categories, grant only those needed for the feature you intend to use.
Do not assume that a consent screen’s friendly wording means unrestricted safety. Save the exact wording or take a screenshot for your records, especially when the tracker is new or the game is competitive.
Step 4: Check the game’s third-party software rules
Being able to sign in does not prove that the app is allowed by the game. Publisher authentication rules and gameplay rules address different risks.

Riot’s distinction between useful and harmful tools
Riot says third-party applications can support legitimate purposes such as stat tracking, but it objects to software that compromises competitive integrity or violates its terms. Its February 10, 2025 support article states: “No software should compromise game integrity or negatively impact the in-game player experience, from the moment you press “Play” until you log off.” Riot also says applications approved and built with its official API should rarely cause issues, while an unauthorized application that interacts with the game in a harmful way can cause an account to be flagged for suspicious behavior.

Do not generalize one publisher’s policy
Riot-specific guidance is not a universal approval for trackers on other games. Read the current rules for the particular title, region, and platform. A read-only web dashboard using an official API is materially different from software that injects code, automates inputs, overlays prohibited information, or reads live game memory.
Riot’s recent policy context is especially relevant to memory-reading tools: the company moved remaining third-party applications toward official API access and prevented game-memory access as a game-integrity and security measure. Treat that as Riot’s policy, not a claim about every publisher.
Step 5: Read the tracker’s privacy policy
The platform may control the authorization token, but the tracker controls what it does with data it receives. Riot’s privacy notice warns that external services may collect and handle personal information under their own policies and that Riot cannot guarantee those practices. Before linking, find clear answers to these questions:

- Is the data used only to provide the requested dashboard, or also for analytics, personalization, advertising, or product development?
- Is information shared with service providers, advertisers, affiliates, or other companies?
- How long is each category retained, and does the company keep backups after account closure?
- Can you delete the tracker account and associated data, and what identity verification is required?
- Where can you submit a privacy request, and which company or legal entity receives it?
Riot says users can limit integration disclosures by declining links or disabling them through account settings. That reduces future integration sharing; it does not establish that a separate service has erased copies it already received.

Platform-specific permission and revocation notes

How to revoke access safely
- Stop using the tracker. Sign out of it and remove any browser extensions or companion software you no longer need.
- Open the game platform’s account settings directly. Use the platform’s official site or console settings, not a link supplied by the tracker.
- Find authorized applications or integrations. The wording differs: PlayStation uses an Authorized Apps list; Epic provides a revoke-access control; Riot describes disabling integrations in account settings.
- Unlink or revoke the specific app. Verify the app name before confirming, particularly if several trackers are connected.
- Check the tracker’s own account settings. Look for account closure, data deletion, or privacy-request instructions.
- Request deletion separately when needed. State which account or identifier is involved and ask what will be removed, including backups and data shared with processors.
- Monitor the account. Review recent sign-ins and connected-app lists for unexpected changes. Change your password through the platform if you entered it anywhere other than the genuine platform sign-in page.
Revoking a token prevents or limits future access; it is not proof that data already copied by the tracker has been deleted. The platform guidance establishes unlinking and revocation controls, while retention and deletion depend on the tracker’s policy and response to your request.
Warning signs and what to do
The tracker asks for your password
Do not continue. Close the form, revoke any authorization you may already have granted, and change the game password if you entered it. Legitimate OAuth2-style flows are designed to avoid sharing that password with the third party.
The requested permissions do not match the feature
Cancel and ask the operator for a written explanation. If the explanation still does not connect each permission to a function you need, choose another tool or use the game’s built-in statistics.
The app uses memory reading or automation
Do not rely on a login token as evidence that the software is permitted. Check the game’s current rules and prefer an official API or approved integration. Competitive-integrity violations can create account risk even when authentication itself succeeds.
You cannot find a revoke control
Search the platform’s current help center for authorized apps, connected apps, integrations, or revoke access. If the app is not listed, contact the platform and tracker separately; do not assume that an unlisted connection has been deleted.
The tracker promises deletion but gives no process
Ask for the retention period, deletion scope, and request channel before linking. Unlink the platform connection and submit a written deletion request if you already authorized it.
Comparing two or more tracking apps
Evaluate the actual consent screens side by side rather than trusting a generic “safe” label. Score each candidate on these five dimensions:
- Data minimization: Are all requested categories necessary for the feature?
- Official access: Does it use the platform’s recognized authorization or API route?
- Rule compliance: Does its behavior fit the game publisher’s current third-party software policy?
- Privacy clarity: Are collection, sharing, retention, and deletion terms specific and understandable?
- Reversibility: Can you quickly locate and use the platform’s revoke or unlink control?
The strongest choice is not necessarily the app with the most features. It is the one whose permissions are narrow and explainable, whose access method is allowed, whose privacy terms are concrete, and whose connection can be undone without guesswork.
Bottom line
Authorize a game tracker only after you have verified the operator, used the platform’s genuine sign-in flow, reviewed every permission, checked the game’s rules, read the tracker’s privacy terms, and located the revoke control. OAuth2 or another official flow can protect your password, but it cannot approve an app’s gameplay behavior or guarantee deletion of data already collected. Treat those as separate checks every time you connect an account.
