A government authorization alone does not prove either point. DoT says a GMPCS licence does not itself provide spectrum-use rights, and separate frequency assignment is required.
Then compare the complete first-year cost, recurring fee, data and fair-use rules, realistic performance, equipment, power and installation requirements, support, and cancellation conditions. As of the latest government statements, consumer prices, address-level availability, speed commitments, data caps, terminal models and support terms are not established in the official sources cited here. Treat every sales claim accordingly.

Start with this seven-point check
- Address eligibility: Obtain written confirmation for the exact service address or coordinates, not merely your state, district or pin code.
- Legitimate consumer offer: Ask for an order page or plan document that identifies the Indian entity, service area, taxes, equipment and contract terms.
- Total cost: Add terminal, router, mount, cable, shipping, installation, taxes, deposits and the recurring subscription.
- Data policy: Find the allowance, fair-use threshold, throttling or deprioritization rules and any excess-use charges.
- Performance: Separate advertised peaks from typical speeds, minimum commitments and latency expectations.
- Site requirements: Confirm clear sky view, mounting, cable route, electricity, battery backup and weather limitations.
- Exit and support: Read repair, replacement, outage-credit, contract, cancellation and equipment-return terms before ordering.
If an operator cannot answer these questions in a current Indian document, you do not yet have a plan that can be responsibly compared.

Availability is an address-level commercial question, not a conclusion you can draw from a licence announcement or a map showing broad satellite coverage. Ask the provider to check your complete address and, where possible, geographic coordinates. Request the result in writing, including whether the address is inside a service area, on a waitlist, subject to capacity limits or excluded from installation.

What the current authorization record says
DoT’s GMPCS service page lists three licensees as of 10 June 2025: Jio Satellite Communications Limited, OneWeb India Communications Private Limited and Starlink Satellite Communication Private Limited. In a Ministry of Communications written reply dated 29 January 2026, the government said DoT had issued Unified Licence authorization for GMPCS service to those same three companies. The release said Amazon Kuiper Services India Private Limited’s application remained under examination; that statement does not establish it as an authorized consumer provider.

Why a licence is not the same as service
DoT states: “The License does not confer any right to assignment and use of spectrum, for which a separate specific frequency assignment shall be required from the WPC Wing of DoT.” The department also says licensees obtain satellite capacity from the Department of Space, NSIL or an appropriately authorized space-segment provider. These are operator-level regulatory conditions. They do not confirm that a terminal can be shipped, activated and supported at your home.
Check the regulatory details without over-reading them
GMPCS authorization indicates that an entity has received permission under India’s licensing framework for global mobile personal communications by satellite service. It is useful evidence that the company is pursuing lawful operation, but it is not a retail service-level agreement. Spectrum assignment, satellite capacity, gateway arrangements, security conditions and local operating procedures still matter.
The government describes satellite connectivity as particularly relevant to rural, remote and underserved locations. The January 2026 ministry release also mentions remote, coastal, border and mountainous areas that can be difficult to cover with terrestrial media. Those statements explain the technology’s potential; they are not a promise of coverage at an individual address.
TRAI published a consultation on satellite-network authorization and spectrum assignment on 8 April 2026 and closed it on 13 May 2026. The consultation and its submissions provide policy context, not a consumer tariff, installation schedule or service guarantee.

How much does satellite internet cost in India?
No current Indian retail prices were established in the cited official records. Do not rely on an overseas price converted into rupees, an old launch rumor or a social-media screenshot. Ask for a written quotation valid for your address and record whether each amount is one-time, monthly, refundable, promotional or tax-inclusive.

Calculate the first year as hardware and one-time charges plus twelve months of recurring fees, then calculate the ongoing monthly and annual cost separately. If a promotion expires, show the post-promotion price alongside the introductory price. A low entry payment can conceal a much higher equipment or renewal cost.

Read the data and fair-use policy line by line
Satellite capacity is shared, so a plan’s headline speed does not tell you how much data receives priority. Before ordering, look for all of these terms:
- Monthly data allowance or priority-data quota.
- Whether “unlimited” use is subject to a fair-use threshold.
- When throttling starts and the speed applied afterward.
- Whether congestion causes deprioritization relative to other users.
- Charges, suspension or reactivation rules for excess use.
- Restrictions on business use, resale, servers, VPNs or high-volume uploads.
- How the provider measures usage and when the billing cycle resets.
The government material cited here does not publish consumer data terms. Require the operator’s current policy before comparing plans; a plan with a lower monthly fee may be unsuitable for remote work, cloud backups or multiple video streams if priority data is limited.
Compare speed, latency and reliability honestly
Record download and upload figures exactly as written, then label each one as an advertised maximum, typical range, minimum commitment or service-level guarantee. Ask whether latency figures are round-trip, measured to an Indian endpoint, and affected by gateway location or network load.

Questions that expose performance limits
- What speeds are expected during evening congestion, not only in an uncongested test?
- How do heavy rain, clouds, snow or wind affect the link and recovery time?
- What unobstructed sky view and elevation angle are required at the installation point?
- Is there a published uptime target, outage-credit policy or restoration window?
- Are speeds different for residential, business and remote-area users?
No provider-specific Indian speed, latency or uptime commitment is established in the cited sources. Do not turn a global specification or another country’s review into an Indian guarantee.

Request the exact equipment list for your plan: outdoor terminal, mounting hardware, router, power supply, indoor unit, cable length, grounding components and any weatherproofing. Confirm whether each item is included, rented, sold separately or supplied only by an approved installer.
Do not assume that a generic satellite dish, television dish, router, mount or cable will work. Satellite terminals use provider-specific radios, pointing, firmware and network authentication. The cited official sources establish no cross-provider compatibility matrix.
Inspect the proposed installation site
- Use the provider’s eligibility tool or survey to identify a location with the required sky view.
- Check roof, wall or pole strength and obtain landlord or housing-society permission where necessary.
- Plan a protected cable route and grounding arrangement; ask who is responsible for electrical work.
- Measure the indoor distance to the router and identify where equipment will remain dry and ventilated.
- Confirm operating power, startup surge and whether the terminal needs continuous electricity.
- If your area has outages, size a UPS, inverter or generator only after the provider gives the terminal and router’s wattage.
Power backup is a practical cost often omitted from promotional pricing. A terminal that loses power during an outage cannot provide a connection even when the satellite link itself is available.

Ask how support is delivered in India, during which hours, and whether assistance is available in your preferred language. Get written answers on terminal failure diagnosis, replacement shipping, technician visits, accidental damage, lightning or weather damage, and the maximum repair timeline.

Read the contract for minimum tenure, notice period, early-termination fee, refund window, unused-data treatment, relocation rules and equipment return packaging. Clarify who owns the terminal after cancellation and what happens if the provider cannot serve a relocated address. The cited government records do not set these consumer terms, so an operator’s current contract controls.
Use TRAI’s tariff portal as a cross-check
TRAI’s Know Your Tariffs portal allows selection of state or licence service area, provider category, provider and connection type. Use it to check whether a relevant tariff is listed, then compare the listing with the operator’s own order page and contract. A portal entry, or its absence, should not be treated as proof that a satellite plan is orderable at your address; the portal does not by itself establish that satellite consumer tariffs are currently listed.
Satellite versus fiber or fixed wireless
Satellite is most compelling where terrestrial networks cannot reach reliably. Where fiber or fixed wireless is available, compare the actual offers rather than assuming satellite is superior because it works without a local cable.

For a remote home, list the activities that matter—voice calls, work VPN, school platforms, video, gaming, cameras and backups—and ask each provider to explain data priority and latency for those uses.
A practical order-before-you-pay workflow
- Map the alternatives: Obtain current quotes for fiber, fixed wireless and satellite at the same address.
- Verify identity: Check the contracting Indian company, authorization description and customer-care channel.
- Get address confirmation: Save the eligibility result, expected installation date and any capacity caveat.
- Collect documents: Download the plan sheet, fair-use policy, equipment list, contract and cancellation policy.
- Normalize costs: Put hardware, delivery, installation, taxes, deposit and twelve months of service in one spreadsheet.
- Test the site: Confirm sky view, mounting permission, cable path, grounding and backup power.
- Make a use-case decision: Reject the plan if its data, latency, support or exit terms do not fit your actual work and household needs.
Red flags that should stop an order
- A seller accepts payment before checking your exact address.
- The offer cites a licence as proof of immediate service but supplies no orderable Indian tariff.
- Hardware, taxes or installation appear only after checkout.
- “Unlimited” service has no published fair-use or throttling policy.
- Speed is shown without upload, latency, congestion or weather qualifications.
- The seller cannot identify the contracting entity or official support channel.
- You are told to buy a generic dish or router without written compatibility confirmation.
- There is no clear process for cancellation, equipment return or outage remedy.
The safest decision is to wait when an operator has authorization but has not yet published a complete, addressable consumer offer. Regulatory progress can be real while retail readiness remains unproven.
