Choose a private hospital for the specific care you need—not for its name alone. Before admission, verify that the right service and clinical team are available, check the facility’s registration and any relevant accreditation, get a written estimate, and confirm coverage directly with your insurer. Because healthcare rules and complaint routes vary by State or Union Territory (UT), verify local requirements rather than assuming one national process applies everywhere.
Start with the treatment, not the hospital’s reputation
A hospital’s general reputation does not establish that a particular clinician, service, piece of equipment, or emergency support is available for your case. Compare facilities against the actual treatment being considered and the support it may require.

Check the treating team and its availability
- Ask who will lead the treatment, what relevant experience they have, and which clinicians will be involved.
- Find out who provides cover at night, on weekends, and if complications arise. Confirm whether the named clinician will personally be available when needed.
- Ask how the hospital will explain options, risks, consent, and follow-up in a language the patient understands.
Match supporting services to the case
Depending on the treatment, ask whether the hospital has appropriate diagnostics, an intensive care unit (ICU), blood-bank services, emergency response, and the capacity to manage complications. If a service is unavailable, ask how referrals or transfers are arranged, who coordinates them, and where the patient would go. These needs differ by treatment; a service that is essential for one case may not be relevant to another.
Compare hospitals on verifiable evidence
Use the same questions for each candidate. Ask for documents or written answers where possible, and distinguish what the hospital says from what you have independently confirmed.

| What to compare | Questions to ask | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment capability | Does this facility provide the specific treatment, and can it manage likely complications? | Relevant services and support at the actual campus where care will take place. |
| Clinician and cover | Who leads the care, who else is involved, and who covers after hours? | Clinician-specific credentials and availability; do not infer these from the hospital’s name. |
| Registration | Is this facility registered with the applicable authority? What is its registration number? | Current registration and the relevant State/UT verification route. |
| Accreditation | Is the hospital currently accredited? Which entity, campus, services, and programme are in scope, and until when? | The current status and scope, rather than a logo or an undated claim. |
| Care and communication | How are consent, infection prevention, medication safety, records, and complaints handled? | How the hospital’s processes apply to the proposed care and how the patient can access records. |
| Charges | What is included in the estimate or package, and what could be billed separately? | A dated, itemized estimate, exclusions, possible add-ons, and deposit or refund terms. |
| Insurance or scheme | Is this branch in the relevant network or empanelled for the treatment? What approvals are needed? | Confirmation from the insurer or scheme administrator for the specific facility, treatment, and eligibility. |
| Practical arrangements | How accessible is the facility, and what arrangements are available for caregivers and follow-up? | Distance, transport, visiting rules, and continuity of care after discharge. |
Check registration under the rules that apply locally
The Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010, and Central Government Rules, 2012 provide a registration and regulation framework in jurisdictions that have adopted the Act. It is not implemented uniformly across India. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) FAQ describes adoption by specified States and UTs; for a particular location, check current State/UT sources rather than relying on an old adoption list or assuming there is one nationwide register that covers every facility.
Ask the hospital for its registration number and the authority that issued it, then check the applicable local verification route. Registration is a regulatory baseline, not proof that a hospital is comparatively excellent or that it has the right capability for a particular treatment. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare says covered establishments must display rates for services and facilities conspicuously in the local language and English and comply with applicable standard treatment guidelines. Whether particular requirements or pricing rules apply depends on the jurisdiction and local implementation.

Understand what NABH accreditation does—and does not—show
The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, describes accreditation as public recognition based on independent external peer assessment. Its standards address processes such as patient care, medication management, consent, safety, records, infection control, staffing, patient feedback, complaint handling, and tariff transparency. NABH also describes continuing monitoring, including planned surveillance during the second year.
Treat accreditation as a useful quality-process signal, not a promise of safe treatment in every circumstance or a guaranteed clinical outcome. Confirm the exact facility or campus, programme, scope, and validity through current NABH information. Different programmes apply to different types of facilities; absence of a large-hospital accreditation label by itself does not establish poor care. Compare the facility’s documented capability and applicable standards with the needs of the case.

Get a written estimate and compare like with like
Before admission, request a dated estimate that identifies the room category and separates the expected charges as far as the hospital can. A package price is difficult to compare if one facility includes items that another bills separately.
- Ask whether professional fees, room charges, diagnostics, medicines, implants, consumables, and blood products are included.
- Clarify package inclusions and exclusions, expected length of stay, and what happens if the stay is longer or the treatment plan changes.
- Ask which clinical changes or complications could increase the bill, and request likely additional charges where the hospital can estimate them.
- Check the deposit amount, payment schedule, cancellation or refund terms, and how final bills are itemized.
Where the Clinical Establishments Act and rules apply, covered facilities have display obligations for rates and facilities. The Ministry also says State/UT governments are responsible for implementation and for controlling exploitative pricing. Local enforcement and any State pricing rules matter, so check what applies where the hospital is located.

Confirm insurance or public-scheme eligibility directly
For private health insurance
Ask both the hospital and the insurer whether the exact branch is in the network for the proposed treatment, and whether cashless treatment or pre-authorisation is available. A hospital’s network statement or accreditation does not guarantee that a particular policy will cover a claim. The insurer’s answer and the policy wording govern the individual case.

Ask what happens if the planned room category exceeds a policy limit, and what costs may remain payable by the patient even if cashless approval is granted. NABH says accreditation can support objective insurance or third-party empanelment; that is not confirmation of coverage under an individual policy.

For PM-JAY or another public scheme
Verify current eligibility, the hospital’s empanelment, and whether the specific treatment is covered through current National Health Authority (NHA) and State/UT scheme information. A 2023 Ministry of Health and Family Welfare release described Health Benefit Packages 2022 as covering 1,949 treatment procedures across 27 specialties. That is a dated description of the 2022 packages, not a private-pay tariff, proof of a hospital’s current empanelment, or confirmation that a patient is eligible. The release also notes that implementing States/UTs may add packages or adjust costs for local needs.
Know how records and complaints are handled
Ask how to obtain copies of medical records, who the hospital’s grievance officer is, and how to raise and track a complaint. If the issue is not resolved, identify the State/UT authority or route for escalation before it is needed.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shared the Patients’ Rights Charter with States/UTs and reported that the National Council for Clinical Establishments updated it in 2021. The Ministry places adoption, implementation, monitoring, display, and grievance arrangements with the respective State/UT governments, where applicable. Its 2022 statement that “Health is a State subject” explains why readers should check their own State/UT’s current charter and complaint contacts rather than expect one uniform national pathway.
Use a short call or visit checklist
- Ask about local registration: “Is this facility currently registered with the relevant authority? What is the registration number, and where can I verify it?”
- Check accreditation scope: “Is this hospital currently NABH accredited? Which campus and services are covered, and when does the accreditation expire?”
- Confirm the clinical team: “Who will lead this treatment, who provides after-hours cover, and what support is available if complications arise?”
- Request the estimate in writing: “Can you itemize fees, room charges, tests, medicines, implants or consumables, package inclusions and exclusions, and likely add-ons?”
- Call the insurer or scheme administrator: “Is this exact branch covered or empanelled for this treatment, what pre-authorisation is required, and what limits or out-of-pocket costs may apply?”
- Ask about records and escalation: “How do I obtain records, contact the grievance officer, and reach the appropriate State/UT authority if the complaint is unresolved?”
Keep the answers, estimate, insurer confirmation, and relevant policy or scheme information together. If it is an emergency, prioritize timely emergency care rather than delaying treatment to complete a comparison.
