1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a bitcoin exchange only after checking that it legally serves your location, identifying the company that will hold your account or assets, calculating the complete cost of your intended transactions, and deciding whether you are comfortable with exchange custody. Compare withdrawal access, security controls, support, disclosures and any proof-of-reserves claims on the same basis. Availability, fees, limits and legal protections can change, so verify the current terms for your jurisdiction before depositing money.
Start with your location and the legal entity
An exchange is not a single globally identical service. The company, licence or registration, products and customer protections can differ by country, state or province. A platform may show one brand while a separately incorporated entity contracts with you and holds your assets.

Confirm service availability
Enter your actual country and, where relevant, state or province on the platform’s eligibility page. Check whether residents can buy bitcoin, sell it, deposit local currency and withdraw bitcoin. A service that permits registration may still restrict trading, bank transfers or withdrawals in your region.

Read the account agreement, terms of service and custody disclosures for the legal name and address of the entity serving you. Record that entity, its country of incorporation and any regulator or registration cited for your jurisdiction. Do not assume that a regulator named on a global website supervises the particular entity holding your account. U.S. guidance is not a worldwide checklist; rules and protections elsewhere can be different.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Calculate the total cost, not just the advertised trading fee
A low headline commission can be outweighed by a wide buy or sell spread, an expensive payment method or a withdrawal charge. Price one realistic transaction from start to finish and write down every amount before comparing services.
| Cost component | What to check | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Quoted price and spread | Is the displayed buy price different from the market price, and is the spread included in the quote? | A “fee-free” purchase can still cost more through the price you receive. |
| Trading fee | Maker, taker or instant-buy fee; volume tier; minimum charge; and whether the rate changes by product. | Your order size and order type determine the effective rate. |
| Deposit or payment charge | Bank transfer, debit card, credit card and payment-processor fees; currency-conversion charges; and deposit holds. | The cheapest funding method may not be the fastest, and a hold can delay a planned purchase or withdrawal. |
| Bitcoin withdrawal | Fixed or variable withdrawal fee, minimum amount, network-fee pass-through, daily limit and processing window. | A small withdrawal can lose a substantial percentage to a fixed charge or remain pending during a hold. |
| Other account or custody fees | Inactivity, account, storage, transfer, setup, annual asset-based and closing fees. | These costs matter when you hold bitcoin for months or move it to another custodian. |
The SEC staff bulletin specifically suggests asking a custodian about transaction, asset-transfer, annual asset-based, setup and closure fees. It does not publish current exchange prices. Read the live fee schedule and fee-disclosure pages for each candidate immediately before trading rather than relying on an old comparison.

Run a transaction scenario
Use the same example for every service, such as one bank-funded purchase followed by a bitcoin withdrawal to your own wallet. Capture the quoted price, spread, explicit trading charge, funding cost, resulting bitcoin amount, withdrawal charge and the time or limit that applies. Repeat the calculation for a sale if you expect to cash out. Keep screenshots or downloaded terms with the date, because fee pages can change.
Check whether you can actually withdraw bitcoin
Buying exposure to a bitcoin price is not the same as receiving bitcoin at an address you control. Confirm that the service permits on-chain withdrawals for your account type and location, not merely transfers between users on the same platform.
- Find the minimum and maximum withdrawal amounts and any rolling daily or monthly limits.
- Check whether newly purchased bitcoin is locked during a payment hold, identity review or fraud review.
- Read the stated processing times and what happens during network congestion.
- See whether the platform sets the network fee, passes through a dynamic fee or charges a fixed amount.
- Verify address and network requirements; sending to an incompatible network or address can make funds unrecoverable.
- Look for a documented procedure when a withdrawal is delayed, rejected or an account is frozen.
If you plan regular transfers, test with a small amount first. A successful small withdrawal confirms the practical path from the exchange to your wallet, but it does not guarantee future availability.

Understand exchange custody and its failure exposure
A crypto wallet does not contain coins in the physical sense; it stores the private keys or passcodes that authorize transactions. In exchange custody, the exchange or its custodian manages those keys. You depend on that organization’s security, solvency, internal controls and withdrawal policy.
Questions for a custodial account
- Who controls the keys, and how many employees or systems can approve a withdrawal?
- Are assets held in hot storage, cold storage or a mixture, and what percentage is held in each?
- Is storage or key management outsourced to another company? If so, identify that provider and the contractual responsibility for losses.
- What happens to customer assets if the exchange is hacked, shuts down, enters bankruptcy or loses access to a key?
- Does the platform segregate customer assets from company assets, and what legal claim would you have in an insolvency?
- What does any insurance cover, and what exclusions apply to theft, employee fraud, lost keys, cyber incidents or market losses?
Exchange custody can be convenient for frequent trading, but a hack, shutdown or bankruptcy may prevent access while the provider resolves the event. Treat statements such as “insured” as incomplete until you can identify the policy, covered assets, limits, exclusions and claim process.
Compare self-custody with leaving bitcoin on the exchange
| Consideration | Exchange custody | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the private keys? | The exchange or its appointed custodian controls or manages them. | You control the keys and authorize transactions yourself. |
| Convenience | Fast trading, password-based account access and platform support. | More setup and operational work; there is no exchange to reset a lost wallet password. |
| Main failure exposure | Provider hack, outage, frozen account, insolvency or withdrawal restriction. | Lost or stolen keys, damaged device, exposed recovery phrase or sending to the wrong address. |
| Recovery responsibility | Depends on the provider’s identity and account-recovery process. | You must protect the recovery information and maintain a usable backup. |
Bitcoin.org explains that leaving bitcoin with an exchange means relying on the company’s security, solvency and withdrawal policies. Self-custody removes that exchange counterparty from control of the keys, but moves the responsibility to you. Its warning is absolute: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” Read its overview of the trade-off at Bitcoin.org’s “Some things you need to know”.

If you choose self-custody
A hardware wallet is a physical cold-storage device category you can investigate, but it is optional and not a substitute for careful key management. Devices generally cost money. Keep the recovery phrase private, create a secure backup, and make sure your heirs or contingency plan can use it if appropriate. Never type a recovery phrase into a website or send it to support. A hardware device can be lost, damaged or replaced; the recovery information is what restores access, so protect it against theft, fire and unauthorized photographs.
Evaluate account security and support before funding
Use a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication (MFA), as SEC staff recommends. Prefer an authenticator app or security key when the service supports it, and examine whether MFA is required for sign-in, new-device approval, address-book changes and withdrawals.

Controls to verify
- Withdrawal-address allowlists, time delays for new addresses and a separate confirmation channel.
- Alerts for logins, password changes, API-key creation and withdrawals.
- Session management that lets you revoke unknown devices.
- Account-recovery rules, identity checks and a clear process for a lost phone or security key.
- Support channels, operating hours, expected response times and an escalation route for a stuck withdrawal.
Phishing can defeat otherwise strong controls. Reach the service through a bookmarked official domain, inspect messages for look-alike addresses and do not disclose passwords, MFA codes or recovery phrases. These precautions reduce account risk but cannot guarantee that the exchange itself will not fail or be compromised.

Read proof-of-reserves claims skeptically
Investor.gov describes proof of reserves as a voluntary method entities use to show reserve assets at a point in time. The SEC warns that an assessment may not provide meaningful assurance that customer liabilities are fully covered. It is not equivalent to an audited financial-statement opinion.
If a platform publishes a report, inspect:
- the assessment date and how often it is repeated;
- which wallets, assets and customer liabilities are included or excluded;
- whether liabilities are independently verified or merely reported by the platform;
- the assurance level, standards and procedures used by the provider;
- the provider’s independence and conflicts of interest; and
- whether the complete results, limitations and exceptions are public.
Read the SEC’s investor alert on crypto-asset securities for the proof-of-reserves caution at Investor.gov. Its securities-law discussion should not be generalized to every bitcoin exchange or every jurisdiction.
Use one comparison sheet for every candidate
When two or more services are available to you, fill the same fields for each one. “Not stated” is a useful result: it identifies a disclosure gap that deserves a support question or a decision to exclude the service.

| Axis | Record for each exchange |
|---|---|
| Availability and legal entity | Eligible country or state, contracting company, regulator or registration, and relevant product restrictions. |
| Total cost | Quoted spread, trading fee, funding charge, withdrawal charge, network-fee policy and recurring or closure charges. |
| Bitcoin access | On-chain withdrawal availability, limits, holds, processing terms and address/network rules. |
| Custody and failure exposure | Key control, hot/cold storage, outsourced providers, segregation, insurance scope and insolvency or shutdown procedure. |
| Security and support | MFA choices, withdrawal controls, alerts, recovery process, support channels and escalation path. |
| Disclosure quality | Clarity of fees, custody risks, conflicts, proof-of-reserves scope and update dates. |
A practical selection sequence
- Define your use case. Write down your location, purchase frequency, typical amount, payment method, need for prompt withdrawals and whether you intend to self-custody.
- Filter for eligibility. Confirm the legal entity and products available to your location before comparing prices.
- Collect current documents. Save the fee schedule, withdrawal policy, custody terms, insurance language, privacy notice and security instructions with the date.
- Calculate your scenario. Apply the same purchase, sale and withdrawal examples to every candidate, including spreads, holds and network charges.
- Ask unresolved questions. Contact support about key control, outsourced custody, insolvency treatment, withdrawal freezes and recovery. Judge both the answer and how clearly it is delivered.
- Make a small first transaction. Complete identity verification, enable MFA and test a small deposit and withdrawal before committing a larger balance.
- Document your custody decision. If funds remain on the exchange, record why and set a balance limit. If you withdraw to self-custody, verify the destination address and secure the recovery backup.
- Review periodically. Recheck jurisdiction eligibility, fees, withdrawal rules, security events and custody disclosures after major account, policy or regulatory changes.
Warning signs that merit a pause
- The site does not clearly identify the legal entity serving your region.
- Fees appear only at checkout, or the quoted price does not explain the spread.
- On-chain withdrawals, limits or holds are difficult to find or are unavailable for your account type.
- Custody, outsourcing, insurance exclusions or insolvency treatment are vague.
- A proof-of-reserves badge gives no date, scope, liability information, methodology or provider details.
- Support asks for your password, MFA code or recovery phrase, or cannot explain how a frozen withdrawal is escalated.
One warning does not prove misconduct, but an unanswered question is a real cost and risk in the comparison. Choose only when you understand what you would pay, who controls the keys and what recourse exists if access is interrupted.
Sources and limits of the guidance
The SEC custody bulletin linked above presents staff views for education, not a binding rule. The older Investor.gov alert on bitcoin and other virtual-currency-related investments contains general risk guidance; do not use it to claim that current protections apply everywhere. Platform availability, legal status, fees, limits, custody claims and insurance terms must be checked in the current documents for your jurisdiction.
