What to Check Before Choosing a Bank After a Merger

A merger can change your bank’s fees, account terms, branches, technology, payment instructions and even the way deposits are insured. Do not assume that a familiar account number, rate or branch will continue unchanged. Start with the acquiring bank’s written notices and your account agreements, then compare the merged bank with realistic alternatives using your own transaction patterns and need for in-person service.

First, identify what transaction actually occurred

This is U.S.-focused consumer guidance. An ordinary bank merger is not the same as a bank failure. In a standard acquisition, your deposit and loan relationships generally continue under contracts and transition instructions issued by the acquiring bank. A failure resolution can involve different treatment of contracts and deposits, so do not apply failure procedures to a healthy-bank merger.

Read every letter, secure-message alert, email and statement from both institutions. Look for the legal name of the assuming bank, the effective date, conversion dates for online banking, new routing or account instructions, branch plans, and deadlines for certificates of deposit or safe-deposit boxes. Keep the notices with your account records.

Build a before-and-after account inventory

List each product you hold at either bank before deciding whether to stay. Include checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts, certificates of deposit, credit cards, mortgages, home-equity lines, auto or personal loans, safe-deposit boxes and linked services. Record the current account number, routing number, interest rate, fee-waiver rules, maturity date, payment date and every automatic transaction.

Then mark what the merger notice says will change and what it does not address. An item described as “no immediate action required” can still have a later conversion date. If a notice is unclear, ask the bank for a written answer rather than relying on a verbal promise.

Compare fees and account terms line by line

Use your last several statements to estimate the cost of staying. Separate fees you actually paid from fees you could incur if a balance, deposit or transaction pattern changes.

Check Questions to ask the merged bank How to compare
Monthly maintenance fee What is the new amount? Does a minimum balance, qualifying direct deposit or age-based waiver apply? Calculate the annual cost under your normal lowest balance, not an exceptional month.
Transaction limits Are withdrawals, transfers, checks or teller transactions limited? What is the excess-transaction charge? Count your typical monthly activity and include seasonal spikes.
Overdraft and returned-item charges What triggers each fee? Are transactions declined, paid into overdraft or covered by a linked account? Compare both the dollar charge and the bank’s posting order or opt-in rules.
ATM and teller fees Which network is free? What are out-of-network, international and cash-deposit charges? Map the ATMs you use near home, work and travel destinations.
Interest rate and yield What is the current rate and annual percentage yield? Is it variable, tiered or promotional? Compare the rate after any introductory period and the balance needed to earn it.
Other account charges Are there fees for paper statements, cashier’s checks, wires, stop payments, deposited items or account closure? Request the complete fee schedule and highlight services you use even occasionally.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation advises consumers to compare costs and benefits. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends requesting a fee list and comparing it with other institutions. Ask specifically how each fee can be avoided and whether a merger notice changes your existing waiver. A bank may change deposit-account or credit-card rates or certain terms when the contract permits it and required advance notice is provided; read the contract and notice together.

Check whether the bank still works where and how you live

Branches and opening hours

Confirm which branches will remain open, which will relocate and the exact hours after conversion. A branch that is close on a map may not offer Saturday hours, a drive-through, a notary, business-cash services or the teller service you need. If you regularly deposit cash, obtain large withdrawals or need assistance with complex transactions, test the replacement branch before closing another account.

ATMs and cash access

List free ATMs near your home, workplace, school and regular travel routes. Check whether the merged bank’s card uses a different network, whether deposits are accepted, and how out-of-network surcharges are handled. Confirm daily withdrawal limits and the process for replacing a card during the transition.

Digital banking and support

Review the mobile and online features you actually use: remote check deposit, transaction alerts, card controls, bill pay, budgeting exports, person-to-person payments, wire initiation, check images and multi-factor authentication. Find out whether the login, app, password, enrolled devices or security questions will change. Test customer-service channels and hours, including secure messaging, telephone support and in-person appointments. A feature listed on a website is less useful if support is unavailable when a payment fails.

Verify deposit-insurance coverage before combining balances

FDIC coverage is generally at least $250,000 per depositor, per account ownership category, at each FDIC-insured bank. The limit applies to eligible deposits, not every financial product sold through a bank. Ownership category matters: accounts owned individually, jointly, by a revocable trust or by certain entities can be treated differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you had deposits at both merging banks, add balances in the same ownership category, including accrued interest. Do not assume that two brand names mean two separately insured banks after the transaction. Confirm the legal bank identity and use FDIC coverage resources or contact the bank when your combined balances approach a limit.

The merger transition period

In qualifying mergers, deposits transferred to the assuming bank are separately insured from deposits you already held there for at least six months after the merger. This temporary protection can give you time to review ownership and move funds, but it does not permanently raise the insurance limit. Certificates of deposit can have additional timing rules, so ask how the grace period applies to each CD, including one that has not matured.

Coverage for a particular person and set of accounts depends on ownership documents, beneficiaries and balances. Treat the $250,000 figure as a starting point, not a conclusion, and verify the facts for your accounts.

Protect loans, cards and recurring payments

Loans and credit cards

An acquired loan remains subject to its loan contract. The merger can nevertheless change the payment address, website, autopay enrollment, statement design or servicing department. Before the first payment after conversion, confirm the payee name, mailing address, electronic-payment details, due date and grace period. Save a statement showing the principal balance and interest rate so you can detect an unexplained change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a credit card, check the annual fee, interest rate, rewards terms, autopay setting, card number, expiration date and dispute contact. Contract terms may permit certain rate or fee changes with advance notice; the notice should state the effective date and any required action.

Deposits, bill pay and transfers

Make an inventory of every incoming and outgoing electronic instruction:

  • Payroll, government benefits and other direct deposits.
  • Mortgage, rent, utilities, insurance, subscriptions and loan debits.
  • External transfers between banks, scheduled bill-pay checks and person-to-person payments.
  • Automatic savings transfers, investment contributions and account alerts.

Ask whether existing instructions will migrate automatically or require new routing and account details. Do not wait for a payment to fail. Verify the first deposit and first withdrawal after conversion, and keep confirmation numbers.

Evaluate branch closures and safe-deposit boxes

If a branch is closing, compare the replacement branch’s distance, hours, parking, accessibility, ATM and services. Ask whether records, signature cards or appointment arrangements will be transferred.

For a safe-deposit box, obtain written instructions about whether the box will move, whether you must attend an inventory, and the deadline to remove contents. Photograph or catalog important contents privately, review who has authorized access, and update your emergency plan. FDIC guidance says a branch-closing notice is generally mailed to branch customers at least 90 days before the proposed closing date and posted at the branch at least 30 days before closing. Relocation within the same neighborhood may have different rules, so follow the bank’s notice.

Compare the merged bank with alternatives using your real priorities

Choose alternatives that are practical for your location, balance and transaction habits. Do not let a short-term promotional rate decide the issue by itself. Compare the following dimensions:

Decision area Evidence to collect Personal test
Total cost Fee schedule, waiver requirements and likely ATM, overdraft and service charges Estimate a 12-month total using your actual balances and transactions.
Rates and terms APY, variable-rate language, minimums, withdrawal limits and promotional expiration Calculate earnings after the promotion ends.
Convenience Branch locations, hours, ATM network, cash-deposit access and remote-deposit limits Check the route you use most, not only the nearest headquarters.
Technology and support Mobile features, alerts, bill pay, security controls and support hours Confirm the functions you need and how a failed payment is handled.
Continuity Account-number, card, loan-servicing and recurring-payment transition instructions Count the manual changes and the risk of missed transactions.
Insurance and ownership Legal insured-bank identity and ownership-category treatment Recalculate combined balances before transferring funds.

The FDIC’s March 2024 consumer guidance states: “Figure out what you want most from a bank, and then compare the benefits and costs of doing business at different institutions.” Apply that advice to your own priorities: frequent cash access, a high savings yield, reliable digital tools, local staff or simple low-cost banking may lead to different choices.

If you move, use an overlap plan

Closing an old account immediately creates avoidable failures. Use a controlled transition:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open and verify the replacement account. Confirm the legal institution, FDIC-insurance status, routing number, online access and debit-card delivery.
  2. Move incoming money. Submit new direct-deposit instructions to each payer and wait for a successful deposit before relying on the new account.
  3. Move recurring withdrawals. Update billers, lenders, subscriptions and external-transfer profiles. Obtain confirmation from each one.
  4. Leave a sufficient cushion in the old account. Cover checks, card transactions, ACH debits, refunds and payments that were authorized before the switch but have not posted.
  5. Monitor both accounts. Reconcile statements and alerts until all expected transactions have cleared. Investigate duplicate, rejected or unauthorized entries promptly.
  6. Stop using the old payment tools. After pending items settle, cancel old bill-pay schedules and destroy old checks and debit or ATM cards securely, as FDIC guidance recommends.
  7. Close the old account and retain proof. Request written confirmation, ask how any remaining balance will be delivered, and keep the final statement and closure confirmation.

Warning signs that require clarification

  • A notice gives a conversion date but no explanation of how existing autopay instructions will work.
  • The fee schedule is available only after login, or the waiver requirements differ between the notice and the agreement.
  • Your combined deposits approach an insurance limit and no one can identify the legal insured bank.
  • A loan servicer asks for payment to a new address without a statement or verifiable customer-service confirmation.
  • A branch closure notice does not explain safe-deposit-box access or the removal deadline.
  • Your first post-merger statement shows a different rate, fee, balance or payment status than the contract and notice indicate.

Use the bank’s published customer-service number or secure message channel, not an unsolicited message, to resolve these issues. Keep dated copies of notices and correspondence.

When staying is sensible—and when switching is safer

Staying may be reasonable when the merged bank preserves the services you use, the total cost remains competitive, deposits and loans transition clearly, and the branch or digital experience still fits your routine. Switching deserves serious consideration when fees rise without a workable waiver, your necessary branch or cash access disappears, support or digital tools no longer meet your needs, or the transition creates unacceptable payment and insurance complexity.

No single merger outcome applies to every customer. Make the decision after checking your own contracts, balances, ownership categories, transaction history, location and written transition dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a merger automatically change my account number?

Not necessarily. The acquiring bank may retain or replace account numbers, cards, checks or routing details. Follow the bank’s written conversion instructions and verify every recurring payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are deposits at both banks insured separately after a merger?

In qualifying mergers, transferred deposits are separately insured from deposits already held at the assuming bank for at least six months. The result depends on ownership category, balances and CD rules, so confirm your specific accounts with the FDIC or bank.

Should I close my old account before the merger is complete?

Usually no. If you switch, keep enough money in the old account for pending withdrawals and monitor both accounts until transactions post, then obtain written closure confirmation.
