A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Before ordering a new internet service, confirm that it serves your exact address, calculate the full cost after introductory discounts, check your current contract and exit charges, schedule the change to protect continuity, and account for bundled services and equipment. The process differs by country: the switching rules and timeframes below that cite Ofcom apply to the UK, while FCC disclosures and map guidance apply to the United States.
Start with the five checks that can prevent an expensive mistake
Do not choose a plan from its headline monthly price alone. A sound switch decision answers five questions in writing:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Can the proposed service, technology and stated performance be delivered to your exact address?
- What will you pay during the introductory period, after it ends, and for installation, equipment, taxes and bundled services?
- When does your current minimum term end, and what cancellation or early-termination amount applies if you leave sooner?
- Who arranges cancellation and installation, and how will you avoid a gap in service or overlapping bills?
- What happens to your landline, television, provider email, alarms, smart-home devices, router and Wi-Fi settings?
Write down the answers from the actual offers and contracts. Availability, prices, fees, equipment and contract terms can vary by address, provider and date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfirm availability and the type of connection
Check the exact service address
Enter the complete address, including apartment or unit details, in the prospective provider’s availability checker, then ask a representative to confirm the result if the address is unusual. A nearby house having service does not prove that your building, line or apartment can be connected. Ask whether the order is ready to schedule or depends on a survey, landlord permission, pole work, trenching or other non-standard construction.

Identify the access technology
Record whether the offer uses full fibre, fibre-to-the-cabinet, cable, fixed wireless, satellite, copper or another technology. Technology affects upload capacity, latency, installation work, reliability expectations and the equipment you need. If the provider offers several technologies at your address, compare the actual service characteristics rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Separate advertised speed from address-specific information
Request download and upload information for your address. Ask for the minimum, normally available, maximum and advertised speeds where those categories are used. Also ask whether the figure is measured at the router, over Wi-Fi or under another condition. A headline download number does not tell you whether video calls, cloud backups or working from home will be comfortable when several devices are active.
Check data limits and overage rules
Confirm whether the plan is unlimited. If it has a data allowance, record the allowance, billing period, overage price, throttling policy and what happens when you exceed it. A lower monthly price can become more expensive than an unlimited plan for a household that streams, uploads photos or uses cloud gaming.
Use maps as leads, not proof
In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Map records availability information submitted by providers. The FCC says the map does not show performance, affordability or adoption. Use it to identify possible providers, then verify the address-specific offer, speed information, price and installation conditions directly. A map result is not a guarantee that the service can be ordered on the terms you need.
Calculate the total cost over the period you expect to stay
Compare the cost for the whole period, not just the first bill. Calculate the introductory monthly charge, the standard monthly charge after the promotion, recurring fees, one-time charges and the value of any discount that depends on another product.

| Cost item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Introductory price | Monthly amount, duration and the date or bill on which it ends |
| Standard price | Monthly amount after the promotion, including any scheduled increase stated in the contract |
| Recurring fees | Router rental, network access, line rental, service fees and any mandatory add-on |
| One-time charges | Installation, activation, construction, delivery, setup or appointment fees |
| Taxes and surcharges | Whether tax is included and which charges can vary by location |
| Bundle conditions | Discounts that disappear if you cancel a phone, television or mobile component |
| Exit exposure | Early-termination amount from the current provider and any remaining equipment balance |
| Customer-owned equipment | Purchase price, compatibility requirements and support limits if you supply a router |
For a simple comparison, multiply each monthly price by the number of months you expect to keep it, add one-time and recurring fees, and subtract only discounts you are certain you will receive. Compare the resulting totals for the same period. If the standard price is not stated, treat that as an unresolved question rather than assuming the promotion continues.
What US disclosures should show
The FCC Broadband Facts label is designed to present monthly price, whether an introductory price applies, contract requirements, monthly and one-time charges, early-termination fees, taxes, discounts, bundles and customer-owned-equipment options. Save the label or offer summary with your order confirmation so you can check the first bill against the promised terms.
What UK customers should read
UK customers should read both the contract summary and the full contract information before agreeing. Ofcom’s checklist says the price and relevant contract terms should be clear before sign-up. Check the standard price, minimum term, included equipment, installation costs and any annual or other price changes stated in the documents.
Check your current contract and the cost of leaving
Find the end date and minimum term
Ask your current provider for the contract end date, minimum term, notice requirement and the exact amount payable if you leave on a chosen date. Do not rely on an old welcome email; later upgrades, speed changes or equipment replacements may have started a new term.
Get an itemized early-termination calculation
Request the exit amount in writing and ask what it includes: remaining monthly commitments, equipment charges, discounts that will be clawed back, taxes or administrative fees. Ask for the amount for both an immediate cancellation and the date on which the minimum term ends. A new provider’s promise to contribute toward an exit fee does not establish that switching is cheaper overall; include both the contribution conditions and your remaining liability in the total-cost calculation.

UK switching and cancellation rights
Ofcom’s UK guidance says early charges may apply before a contract ends. Under the One Touch Switch process, the new provider manages the switch and must provide charge information before the change proceeds. Ofcom’s guidance also states that a consumer can cancel a UK switch order within 14 calendar days. These are UK rules and guidance, not universal rights; readers elsewhere should check their regulator and contract.
Plan installation and continuity before you place the order
Know who initiates the change
Ask the new provider whether it will notify and cancel the old service or whether you must do both tasks. In the UK One Touch Switch process, you start with the new provider, which manages the switch. A change of network or a move to full fibre may require an engineer visit, an optical network terminal or a replacement router.
Choose dates that protect essential connectivity
Obtain the expected installation and activation dates, the appointment window, and the date the old service will stop. Keep a written record of order numbers and both providers’ support contacts. If you work from home, run a business, use medical monitoring or depend on a security system, arrange a backup such as mobile tethering before the cutover.
Understand the UK service-loss expectation
Ofcom’s UK guidance says service loss should not last longer than one working day and describes compensation in specified circumstances. This is an expectation under that UK process, not a promise that applies in every country or every separately arranged installation. Ask how compensation claims work and what evidence is required if the appointment is missed or service is lost for longer.
Decide whether to overlap services
A separately managed overlap can reduce outage risk, but it can also create duplicate bills and may not be possible on the same line. Confirm with both providers which service remains active, the exact stop date, any overlap charge and whether an engineer must access your property. Never cancel the old service first unless the new provider has confirmed that the new connection is active and stable.

Audit bundles and services tied to the connection
Landline, television and other products
Broadband may be sold with a landline, television package, mobile service, cloud storage or technical-support add-on. Ask which components end automatically, which continue at a different price and whether cancelling one removes a discount from the others. In the UK, Ofcom notes that switching broadband may also switch a landline, so check the number, call features and any alarm or medical device that uses it.
Provider email accounts
Ask the old provider what happens to an email address supplied with the account, how long it remains available and whether forwarding or export is offered. Before the switch, change the email address on banking, shopping, government, school, employment and recovery accounts. Save contacts and important messages in a format you can access without the old mailbox.
Home devices and remote access
List cameras, thermostats, printers, speakers, game consoles, alarms and other devices that connect to Wi-Fi. Note each device’s network name and password requirements before installation. If the new router permits it, reusing the old network name and password can reconnect many devices automatically; use a strong password and do not reuse a weak or exposed credential simply to avoid setup work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the router and all required equipment
Clarify what is included
Ask whether the router, fibre terminal, modem, power supply, filters and cables are included, rented or sold separately. Confirm delivery timing and whether equipment must be returned when the service ends. Ofcom says a switch may require new equipment and that setup is likely to include a new broadband router.
Verify compatibility before buying your own router
If you prefer customer-owned equipment, obtain the provider’s technical requirements first. Confirm supported access technology, authentication method, VLAN or telephone settings, IPv4 and IPv6 support, voice-service compatibility and whether the provider will troubleshoot a third-party router. A router that works on one network may not work on another, even if its advertised Wi-Fi standard is newer.

Plan physical installation
Check where the line or fibre enters the property, whether power is available there and whether the supplied cable reaches your preferred router location. Ask about drilling, internal cable runs, landlord approval and removal of old equipment. Photograph existing connections before an engineer visit so you can restore or explain the previous arrangement if necessary.
Compare offers with a consistent decision matrix
Put each offer in one table and fill every cell from its written terms. If a value is not stated, mark it as “not stated” and ask before ordering.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Availability and technology | Is service confirmed at the exact address, and what network type and construction work are involved? |
| Performance and data | What are download and upload speeds, normal or minimum information, latency expectations and data-limit rules? |
| Total cost | What is the whole-period cost during promotion and after it, including fees, taxes, equipment and bundles? |
| Contract and exit | What is the minimum term, end date, notice period and early-termination amount? |
| Installation and continuity | Who schedules the work, is an engineer required, when does billing start and what outage protection exists? |
| Services and equipment | What happens to phone, television, email and devices, and which router or terminal is supplied? |
Use this order of operations when switching
- Collect your current account details. Save the contract, latest bill, account number, service address, contract end date, equipment list and the provider’s written exit calculation.
- Verify the prospective service. Confirm address availability, technology, download and upload information, data terms, installation requirements and equipment.
- Calculate the whole-period price. Include promotional expiry, standard pricing, mandatory fees, taxes, bundle effects and any early-termination liability.
- Audit dependent services. Decide what happens to the landline, phone number, television, provider email, alarms and connected devices.
- Order with the correct process. In the UK, start with the new provider under One Touch Switch; elsewhere follow the local provider and regulator procedure.
- Save all confirmations. Keep the contract summary, Broadband Facts label where applicable, order number, appointment details, activation date and cancellation terms.
- Prepare your home network. Back up important settings, arrange a temporary connection if needed, and plan the router and device reconnection.
- Test before closing the old account. Check wired and Wi-Fi connectivity, download and upload performance, phone service, streaming, work systems and smart-home devices. Only then confirm that the old service has stopped and that final billing is correct.
Common traps and how to resolve them
The map says service is available, but ordering fails
Ask the provider to explain the address qualification and whether construction, a survey or a landlord permission is pending. Do not cancel the existing service until a deliverable installation date is confirmed.
The first bill is higher than the advertised price
Compare it line by line with the contract summary: installation, activation, partial-month billing, equipment rental, taxes and lost bundle discounts are common causes. Request a correction for charges that contradict the written offer and keep the evidence.
The new connection works, but devices are offline
Check the Wi-Fi name and password, reconnect devices that were tied to the old network, and update any app or remote-access setting that references the previous router. If you reused the old credentials, verify that the new router actually saved them and that security mode is supported by older devices.
You are asked to pay an unexpected exit fee
Request the contractual clause and an itemized calculation, then compare it with the exit figure you obtained before ordering. If the amount differs, escalate through the provider’s complaint process and the relevant regulator or dispute scheme for your jurisdiction.
