Do not buy a used PS2 or PS3 disc expecting it to run on a PS4 or PS5. Sony documents no disc backward compatibility for those older generations. Before paying, identify the game format, identify whether the destination is a PS4 or PS5, check whether a PS5 has a disc drive, and verify the exact title if the disc is actually a PS4 game.
The compatibility answer before you spend money
The label on the game case matters more than the PlayStation logo. A PS2 disc is PS2-format software; a PS3 disc is PS3-format software. Neither is a supported disc format for a PS4 or PS5.

This distinction comes from Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility guidance, the Europe edition of Sony’s PS4 FAQ published on October 30, 2013, and Sony’s PS5 safety documentation. The PS4 FAQ states that PS4 has no backward compatibility for PS3, PS2 or PSone games. Sony’s PS5 support page explicitly says PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. The safety guide also says PS2- and PS3-format software cannot be played from disc.

First, identify exactly what the seller is offering
Read the platform marking on the case and disc
Ask for a clear photograph of both the front or spine of the case and the disc face. Look for the platform name printed on the package itself: PS2, PS3 or PS4. Do not infer the format from a generic PlayStation logo, a listing category, or a seller’s statement that the game is “for PlayStation.” A title released across several generations may have separate discs, packaging and compatibility rules.

Ask for the exact edition when a listing is unclear
Remasters, collections and re-releases can carry a different platform designation from the original game. If the seller shows only a picture of the artwork, request the disc label and the product code or edition information visible on the packaging. A PS4 remaster is a PS4 disc; the original PS3 release remains a PS3 disc even when the game title is identical.
Separate physical software from a download code
A disc and a digital entitlement are not interchangeable. A listing that mentions an upgrade, voucher or download may be describing a title-specific digital offer rather than native support for the older disc. Ask what is physically included, whether any code has already been redeemed, and which disc the console must read to start the game.
Check the destination console, not just the game
PS4
PS4 does not read PS2 or PS3 game discs. Buying a PS4 console does not change that limitation, and inserting an older disc cannot convert it into a supported PS4 license. Sony’s used-disc statement for PS4 is narrower: Sony says the PS4 does not restrict players from playing disc-based used games. That means a used, supported PS4 disc can be used; it does not make PS2 or PS3 discs compatible.
PS5 with a disc drive
A PS5 with an optical disc drive can use compatible PS4 game discs. Sony describes the PS5 library as compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, while identifying exceptions. The disc must remain inserted whenever the game is played because it serves as the ownership check. This support is for PS4-format discs, not PS2 or PS3 discs.
PS5 Digital Edition
A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read any physical game disc. It therefore cannot use a PS4 disc, even when that particular PS4 title is otherwise supported on PS5. If the console is a Digital Edition, buy a digital version only after checking that the title is available for that account and region; an older physical disc will not provide access.

Confirm the exact PS5 hardware
Ask the owner to identify whether the console has a disc slot rather than relying on a product name in a second-hand listing. Models and bundles can be described imprecisely by sellers. For a physical PS4 purchase, the practical test is whether the console has an installed optical drive and can accept a disc.
Use Sony’s title-by-title check for PS4 discs
If the disc marking says PS4 and the target is a disc-drive PS5, search the exact game title in Sony’s current compatibility guidance or its PlayStation Store listing. “Most PS4 games” is not a guarantee that every title works. Some games are labelled PS4-only, and Sony notes that the compatibility list can change.
- Write down the complete title. Include subtitles, collection names and the edition shown on the disc.
- Check the platform. Confirm that the physical disc is PS4 format, not PS3 or a mixed-generation bundle.
- Open Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility information. Look for the game’s exact name and any warning such as PS4-only, known issues or required updates.
- Check the console drive. A physical PS4 purchase requires a PS5 with a disc drive; the Digital Edition cannot use it.
- Update the PS5 system software. Compatibility information and game fixes assume the console is running current system software.
- Keep the disc. Even after installation or an update, the PS4 disc normally has to be inserted each time you launch the game.
Do not use the catalog count sometimes quoted for PS4 games as a compatibility statistic. A large number of PS4 titles says nothing about whether a PS2 or PS3 disc will run.
Understand the PS3-to-PS4 upgrade trap
Some publishers offered an upgrade from a PS3 release to a PS4 digital version. That arrangement is a title-specific promotion, not general PS3-disc backward compatibility. The game may require an eligible PS3 disc to be inserted when the upgraded PS4 download is launched.
Why an upgrade is different from native support
The PS4 version is a separate digital game entitlement. The PS3 disc can act as proof that the buyer owns the qualifying release, but the PS4 console is not running the PS3 software. Offers, prices, dates, countries and account requirements depend on the individual game.

Why the same disc-dependent upgrade does not carry to PS5
Sony’s PS5 guidance says that an upgraded PS4 digital game which still requires its PS3 disc cannot be played on PS5. The PS5 cannot use that older PS3 disc as the required launch key. If a seller claims that a PS3 disc includes a free route to PS5, ask for the specific Sony and publisher terms; do not assume the PS4 upgrade transfers.

- Is the offer still active, or was it limited to a past promotion?
- Is the code unused, and is a code required at all?
- Does the offer apply in the buyer’s country or account region?
- Does the PS4 version require the original PS3 disc at launch?
- Does the publisher document a PS5 version or a separate PS5 upgrade?
A “PS3 disc included” listing is not enough evidence. The exact game’s upgrade instructions control the result.
If you are buying an older PS3 to play PS2 discs
This is a different compatibility question from using a PS2 disc on PS4 or PS5. Some PS3 hardware has limited legacy support, so the model number matters. Sony’s manual for the CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B models, covering software version 3.10, states that those models do not play PS2-format software and have limited PlayStation-format compatibility.
Do not generalize from one PS3 model
The CECH-2101 manual cannot establish the behavior of every PS3 model. Sellers may list only “80GB PS3” or “fat PS3,” which is not precise enough for a compatibility decision. Request a photograph of the model number printed on the console label and compare it with the documentation for that exact model.
Verify the game separately
Even when a particular PS3 model has some legacy capability, model support does not automatically prove that every PS2 title works. Check the game against the model’s published compatibility information, and treat seller claims such as “plays all PS2 games” as unverified until the exact combination is documented.

Choose the right purchase goal
If the objective is to play a PS2 disc, buying a PS4 or PS5 will not solve it. The relevant comparison is between the game’s PS2 format and the documented capabilities of a specific older console. If the objective is to play on a newer generation, look for a native PS4 or PS5 release instead of relying on the old disc.

- Capture the disc format. Ask the seller to state whether the disc is PS2, PS3 or PS4 and provide a photograph that makes the marking readable.
- Capture the target console. Decide whether the game will be used on PS4, PS5 with a drive, or PS5 Digital Edition. Do not treat “newer PlayStation” as a sufficient description.
- Eliminate impossible combinations. Reject PS2 and PS3 discs when the intended console is PS4 or PS5. Reject every physical disc when the intended console is PS5 Digital Edition.
- Check PS4 titles by name. For a PS4 disc and disc-drive PS5, look up the exact title in Sony’s current compatibility information and note any PS4-only warning.
- Investigate upgrade language. If the listing says PS3-to-PS4 or PS4-to-PS5 upgrade, read the title-specific requirements, region limits and disc requirements before paying.
- Confirm the seller’s physical contents. Make sure the advertised disc is present, not only a redeemed code or an empty case.
- Inspect condition without confusing it with compatibility. Scratches, cracks or a missing disc can prevent a supported game from working, but a clean PS3 disc is still not a supported PS4 or PS5 disc.
- Keep proof of the listing. Save photographs and the seller’s description so that a platform mismatch can be identified quickly if the item arrives differently.
Common claims that should make you pause
“It has the PlayStation logo, so it works.”
The logo identifies the family, not the generation. The platform marking on the disc and case is the decisive first check.
“PS5 is backward compatible.”
That statement is incomplete. PS5 backward compatibility primarily concerns PS4 games, with exceptions. It does not extend to PS3 discs or PS2-format discs from disc.
“The PS5 will download the newer version from the old disc.”
A title-specific upgrade may exist, but it has its own conditions. A PS3 disc that is required for an upgraded PS4 digital game is specifically excluded from use on PS5 under Sony’s guidance.

The absence of a disc drive is decisive for this purchase. A Digital Edition cannot authenticate or install a PS4 physical game disc.
“Every PS3 can play PS2 games.”
Model differences invalidate that assumption. The CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B documentation specifically excludes PS2-format software, so verify the exact hardware.
“A cleaning kit or adapter will fix it.”
Physical accessories cannot add a software format that Sony does not support. Cleaning may help a damaged compatible disc, but it cannot turn a PS2 or PS3 disc into a PS4 or PS5 game.
How to decide when the listing is ambiguous

What the official statements do—and do not—promise
Sony’s documents establish format and model limits; they do not promise that every used disc is physically readable. A supported game can still fail because of a cracked disc, severe damage, a missing disc, an account issue or a required update. Those are separate purchase checks.

They also do not guarantee that an upgrade promotion remains available. Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 instructions note that disc upgrades require a PS5 with a disc drive and that country, region and other conditions may apply. Read the current instructions for the particular game rather than relying on an old forum post or a seller’s memory.
The PS4 FAQ cited here is the European edition dated October 30, 2013. The PS5 compatibility page is current guidance, while the PS3 warning comes from the CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B manual for software version 3.10. Those dates and model limits matter: a statement about one PS3 model should not be expanded to every PS3, and a historical upgrade offer should not be treated as a permanent entitlement.
Final buying rule
For a PS4 or PS5 purchase, reject PS2 and PS3 discs as playable software. For a PS4 disc on PS5, require three things at once: the exact title is supported, the console has a disc drive, and the disc remains available for launch. For an upgrade listing, verify the game-specific terms. For a PS3 bought for PS2 software, verify the exact CECH model and the exact game independently. If the seller cannot provide those details, the risk is not worth treating the disc as compatible.
