Check the model numbers, regional compatibility, app and firmware requirements, room placement, and television features before ordering. The main system is the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio (HT-A8); its listed optional surround speakers are BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 (SA-RS9), and its listed subwoofer is BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 (SA-SW9). Sony also lists other compatible speakers, so a product title that merely says “Sony rear speakers” or “Sony subwoofer” is not enough.
The safest purchase is one that you can identify by exact model code, confirm on Sony’s current compatibility page for your country, and install with the latest BRAVIA Connect app and updated Trio software. The checks below also explain what these add-ons do, what their specifications mean, and how to avoid the setup problems Sony documents.

Identify exactly what you are buying
Family names are easy to confuse because retailers often shorten them. Before paying, compare the code printed on the listing, box, or product label with the codes in Sony’s documentation.
| Component | Exact model | Role | What Sony’s cited information establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA Theatre Trio | HT-A8 | Main home-theater system | This is the main audio device to which the optional Rear 9 and Sub 9 are listed as compatible. |
| BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 | SA-RS9 | Optional rear surround speakers | Two rear speakers are sold as the surround add-on; Sony lists them as compatible with HT-A8. |
| BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 | SA-SW9 | Optional subwoofer | Sony lists it as compatible with HT-A8 and identifies it as a subwoofer rather than a rear-channel speaker. |
Do not assume that every speaker carrying the Sony name will pair with the Trio. Sony’s compatibility material includes other rear and subwoofer models, which makes the model code—not the family name—the decisive check.

Confirm compatibility in your country
Sony’s compatibility list includes HT-A8 with SA-RS9 and SA-SW9, but Sony also warns that models may not be sold in every country or region. A listing that appears available from an overseas seller may therefore be unavailable through local support, have different documentation, or not be intended for your market.
- Open Sony’s current compatibility page for the country where the system will be installed.
- Locate HT-A8 and verify that SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 are shown in the compatible-speaker entries.
- Check the retailer’s box and product label for the same model codes; do not rely on a shortened listing title.
- Confirm that the seller can supply the correct regional version and return it if the code or compatibility does not match.
Feature support, firmware instructions, and availability can change. Recheck Sony’s current pages immediately before ordering, especially if the product is imported or has been stored for a long time.
Understand what each add-on changes
Rear 9: surround channels behind the listening position
The SA-RS9 is the surround-speaker option. Sony specifies a six-channel amplifier and total output of 180 W, stated as 90 W per side. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent measurement of loudness, coverage, or sound quality in your room.

Each speaker measures 154 × 286 × 154 mm (6.13 × 11.38 × 6.13 in) and weighs 5.95 lb, according to Sony’s specifications. The dimensions describe the cabinet, not the extra clearance you need for a power connection, cable routing, or stable placement. Measure the intended shelves or stands and leave access to the power connection rather than placing a speaker tightly against a wall or inside a closed compartment.
Sub 9: low-frequency reinforcement
The SA-SW9 is the optional subwoofer. It performs a different job from the Rear 9: it is not a replacement for rear surround channels. Decide whether your room and content benefit more from adding surround speakers first or adding a subwoofer first; the two options address different parts of the system.
Sony states that dual-subwoofer operation requires a compatible main audio device and that two subwoofers used together must be the same model. Sony’s support material identifies the Trio among devices that support two subwoofers, but check the current HT-A8 instructions before buying a second unit. Do not plan a mixed pair of different Sony subwoofer models.

Check the television and source-device match
The Trio’s feature set depends partly on the television and its software. Sony describes Voice Zoom 3 with selected BRAVIA televisions and describes Direct Connect to compatible BRAVIA TVs. “Compatible BRAVIA” is not the same as “any television with an HDMI port,” so verify your TV model and software support in Sony’s current documentation.
Voice Zoom 3
If clearer dialogue through Voice Zoom 3 is important to you, confirm that your particular BRAVIA model is one of the selected TVs Sony supports. The feature description alone does not establish support for every BRAVIA generation or every region.
Direct Connect and gaming
Sony warns that Direct Connect can produce noticeable lip-sync problems when Game or PC content settings are active. Its guidance is to change the content type away from Game or PC to reduce the issue. This matters if you plan to use a console or computer through a compatible BRAVIA TV: test the intended input mode rather than assuming the setting that minimizes controller or mouse latency will also give perfect dialogue synchronization.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before purchase, list the sources you actually use—streaming apps, a game console, a computer, or a disc player—and check how each will connect to the TV and Trio. The cited Sony material does not establish a universal lip-sync result for every source, cable, or display, so treat the Game/PC warning as a configuration check, not a prediction that every setup will fail.
Plan physical placement and power
Use the Rear 9 measurements before you order furniture, stands, or wall shelves. A 154 × 286 × 154 mm cabinet is compact enough for many rooms, but its 286 mm height and power access still need to fit the chosen position. The cited Sony information does not prescribe an ideal listening distance or a universal room layout; avoid treating a marketing diagram as a guaranteed placement rule.
Recommended Free Tools
- Measure the actual usable surface, including the space needed to reach the power connection.
- Check that each rear speaker can stand upright and remain stable.
- Keep the speaker labels visible during setup so you can identify the correct left and right units.
- Plan power outlets before mounting or moving furniture; wireless audio does not mean battery operation.
- Leave a practical route for moving a speaker if Sound Field Optimization reports a placement or connection problem.
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance specifically says to check each speaker’s placement label and install the speakers upright when optimization fails. Follow that instruction before changing advanced settings.

Prepare the app and firmware before connecting optional speakers
Sony requires the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app to connect compatible optional speakers to the Trio. Install the latest version available for your phone, and update the main audio device software before adding the Rear 9 or Sub 9.
- Install or update Sony | BRAVIA Connect on the phone you will use for setup.
- Place the HT-A8, TV, and optional speakers where they can receive power and network connectivity.
- Complete the Trio’s basic connection to the TV according to its model-specific Help Guide.
- Check for a software update on the main audio device and install it before pairing optional speakers.
- Use the app’s instructions to add the SA-RS9 and/or SA-SW9, entering the exact models when prompted.
- Run the system’s speaker setup or Sound Field Optimization after all intended speakers are connected.
Sony’s documents differ on when optional speakers should be connected: some model manuals describe adding them during initial setup, while Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says to complete initial setup, update the main device, and then connect the speakers. Resolve that apparent difference by following the instructions displayed for your exact HT-A8 software version. If the first-run wizard explicitly asks for the optional speakers, connect them at that point; otherwise finish the initial setup and update first, then add them through BRAVIA Connect.
Use a buying decision that matches your room
| Your priority | Check first | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| More convincing surround effects | That the SA-RS9 model is listed for HT-A8 and that you have two stable, powered rear positions. | That any Sony rear speaker will pair with the Trio. |
| More low-frequency output | That SA-SW9 is listed for your HT-A8 region and that you have a suitable powered location. | That a subwoofer provides rear-channel effects. |
| Two subwoofers | Current HT-A8 support for dual-subwoofer operation and two matching SA-SW9 units. | That different Sony subwoofer models can be mixed as a pair. |
| Voice Zoom 3 or Direct Connect | Your exact BRAVIA TV model, software, and content-type settings. | That every BRAVIA TV or every Game/PC configuration supports the same behavior. |
| A simple installation | Latest BRAVIA Connect, updated HT-A8 software, network access, and reachable power outlets. | That wireless pairing eliminates setup or power requirements. |
What to do if pairing fails
If the app cannot connect an optional speaker, work through the checks in this order rather than repeatedly restarting the same step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Read the product label again and confirm HT-A8, SA-RS9, or SA-SW9 as appropriate.
- Verify the model appears on Sony’s current compatibility page for your region.
- Update BRAVIA Connect and the HT-A8 main-device software.
- Confirm that the speaker is receiving power and is positioned upright.
- Check the speaker’s placement label and make sure left/right units are not being treated as interchangeable.
- Retry the connection using the model-specific Help Guide instead of a generic Sony soundbar procedure.
- If Sound Field Optimization fails, check Wi-Fi connectivity and move the affected speaker temporarily to a more open, stable position.
Sony identifies Wi-Fi connectivity and speaker placement as possible causes of failed Sound Field Optimization. Those checks should come before assuming that the speaker is defective.
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
The available specifications establish the Rear 9’s model, dimensions, weight, amplifier-channel count, and stated output. They do not establish independent laboratory performance, maximum room size, preferred listening distance, bass extension, subjective tonal balance, or a guaranteed improvement with every TV and source. No hands-on listening test is represented by these figures.
Likewise, compatibility confirms that Sony lists the Trio with the Rear 9 and Sub 9; it does not guarantee that every regional firmware version, network environment, or room arrangement will behave identically. Keep the retailer’s return policy and Sony’s current support instructions in view when buying imported, older, or open-box equipment.
