Buy the Fairphone (Gen. 6+) for its repairable design and long security-support promise—not because it is automatically the fastest mid-range phone. Before ordering, verify that you are looking at The Fairphone (Gen. 6+), not the earlier The Fairphone (Gen. 6); compare the two support roadmaps; confirm spare-part availability and warranty rules in your country; and decide whether the €50 premium, performance level and repair process fit your priorities.
Fairphone lists the Gen. 6+ at €649 with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor and 12GB of RAM. The Gen. 6 is listed at €599 with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and 8GB of RAM. Those are prices on Fairphone’s own product page for the market shown, not a guarantee of the price, tax treatment or stock at every retailer.

Start by confirming which Fairphone you are buying
The official product name is The Fairphone (Gen. 6+). The “+” is not a storage or colour option for the previous phone; it identifies a hardware refresh with a different processor, more memory and a different Android-upgrade commitment. Do not assume that a Gen. 6 specification, spare part or support statement automatically applies to the Gen. 6+.
Check the model name in the seller’s title, the specifications panel and the order confirmation. If any page alternates between “Gen. 6” and “Gen. 6+,” pause before paying and ask the seller for the exact model identifier. This matters when you buy a replacement component later, because Fairphone says parts are not interchangeable between different Fairphone models.

Gen. 6 and Gen. 6+: the differences that affect your decision
| Check | Fairphone (Gen. 6) | Fairphone (Gen. 6+) |
|---|---|---|
| Launch operating system | Android 15 | Android 16 |
| Minimum Android version upgrades | At least 7 | At least 6 |
| Security-support endpoint | June 2033 | June 2033 |

| RAM shown on Fairphone’s page | 8GB | 12GB |
| Listed Fairphone page price | €599 | €649 |
The extra €50 buys the newer Snapdragon platform and 4GB more RAM on the listed configurations, but it also comes with one fewer minimum Android version upgrade because the + model starts on Android 16. Both roadmaps end security support in June 2033, so the Android-version count and the security date answer different questions.
Understand what the software promises actually mean
Android version upgrades
Fairphone’s published roadmap says the Gen. 6 launched with Android 15 and will receive at least seven Android version upgrades. The Gen. 6+ launched with Android 16 and will receive at least six. “At least” is a floor, not a calendar of guaranteed release dates. The company’s roadmap does not independently guarantee the month in which every Android release reaches every region or carrier variant.
Security updates
Both models have a stated security-support endpoint of June 2033. Fairphone says monthly security updates run for about three years on the Gen. 6 and about two years on the Gen. 6+, followed by updates every two months from June 2028 through June 2033. Treat that cadence as the company’s published plan and check the phone’s update screen after purchase; security-update timing can still vary by software build, region and certification work.

How to use the roadmap in your buying decision
- If you keep phones until the end of their security life, the shared June 2033 endpoint is the most important comparison.
- If you care about trying each major Android release, compare the upgrade counts and launch versions rather than assuming the newer model automatically receives more versions.
- If you need a particular Android API, enterprise-management feature or app compatibility date, verify that requirement with the app or service provider instead of relying on the “at least” wording.
Check the repair system before you need it
Fairphone says the Gen. 6 and Gen. 6+ have 12 user-replaceable parts. Its support material provides replacement guidance for the battery, display, top unit, cameras and earpiece, loudspeaker and USB-C port. Fairphone describes the design intent this way: “The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is designed to make repairs accessible and straightforward.” That is the company’s statement of intent, not a guarantee that every repair will be easy for every owner.
The parts you are most likely to replace
- Battery: a consumable component that can restore endurance when capacity has declined.
- Display: relevant after a cracked panel or display failure.
- Top unit: a separate module covered by Fairphone’s repair instructions.
- Cameras and earpiece: listed as a repair category rather than a single universal component.
- Loudspeaker: replaceable using the applicable guide.
- USB-C port: a common wear point for charging and data connections.
These categories do not mean that every internal fault is solved by changing a module. The core module is not sold separately. If Fairphone’s troubleshooting points to a core-module fault, the company directs you to its repair centre rather than a do-it-yourself core replacement.
Buy the exact part for the exact model
Before adding a component to your cart, read the compatibility text for your phone. Fairphone says components are not interchangeable between different models, so a part labelled for the Gen. 6 is not a safe substitute for one labelled for the Gen. 6+. Keep the model name and any product identifier from your order confirmation; they make future parts searches less error-prone.

- Titanium-coated dynamic drivers: Enjoy a rich, perfectly balanced sound profile with titanium-coated 11mm dynamic drivers. Powerful highs, warm mids, and deep lows complement each other for pure sound that is natural and true-to-life. Zero distortion, zero crackling. Experience sound the way it was created.
- Active Noise Canceling: Going for a run, but want to keep an ear out for traffic? Switch on ambient mode. Looking for deep focus time with absolutely zero distractions. Switch to active mode. The Fairbuds unlocks a fully immersive sonic experience on demand. And, when out in the real world, its advanced wind reduction makes sure the listening experience is never compromised.
- 26 hours of battery runtime: The Fairbuds are geared for an uninterrupted listening experience, be it at work or on the go. Get up to six hours of listening on a single charge. And when it's time, pop them in the charging case for a quick boost. The Fairbuds charges up fast, with 1.5 of listening in just ten minutes. The charging case can fully charge the Fairbuds up to three times more, before it needs to be juiced up. Now that's fair.
- Crystal-clear calling: The Fairbuds come with Environmental Noise Canceling (ENC). That means all calls and voice recordings on the Fairbuds always sound as clear as day, no matter the surroundings. It gets the job done with the help of six onboard mics that can intelligently pick up vocal patterns while cutting out background noise.
- Seamless dual point connectivity: Multipoint connectivity is a no-brainer with the Fairbuds. It can connect to two devices at the same time, while switching between them is a just a button tap away. That means staying connected to a laptop and a smartphone at the same time is easy, and moving from one to the other is seamless.
What to have ready for a DIY repair
Fairphone’s repair guidance calls for a Torx T5 screwdriver. A practical workspace also includes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- a clean, flat, well-lit surface;
- a soft cloth to protect the screen and housing;
- small containers or a magnetic tray for screws;
- a plastic card or guitar pick for separating components without using a metal blade;
- the written or video guide for the exact part and model.
Do not improvise with a mismatched driver. A damaged screw head can turn a routine module swap into a more difficult repair and may complicate later service.
Use this repair sequence when a part fails
- Identify the symptom. Confirm whether the problem is the battery, display, top unit, camera or earpiece, loudspeaker or USB-C port. Check Fairphone’s troubleshooting guidance before ordering anything.
- Check warranty coverage first. Fairphone advertises a five-year warranty, but the applicable terms are regional. Support instructions tell you to establish whether the failure is covered before you buy a spare part.
- Confirm compatibility and stock. Select a part explicitly marked for the Gen. 6 or Gen. 6+, as appropriate. Availability can change, so verify that the item can actually be shipped to your country.
- Back up your data. A repair can expose the phone to accidental damage or a later reset. Make a current backup and record authentication or eSIM recovery details before opening the device.
- Update the phone’s software. Fairphone advises updating before the repair so the firmware can recognize replacement parts correctly.
- Power and charge safely. Charge the battery to a sensible level, then follow the guide’s shutdown and disconnection instructions. Do not work on a powered device unless the guide explicitly requires it.
- Organize the workspace. Lay out the Torx T5 driver, plastic pick, cloth and screw containers before removing the first fastener.
- Follow the exact guide. Use the written or video instructions for that component. Do not assume that a visually similar module has the same connector, screw order or removal direction.
- Test before final closure. Reconnect the battery and test the repaired function—charging, audio, display, camera or microphone—before tightening every cover.
- Stop when the fault points to the core module. Because that module is not sold separately, arrange Fairphone-centre service instead of attempting an unsupported board-level repair.
Warranty and repair cost are separate calculations
A five-year advertised warranty does not mean every failure, part or labour charge is covered everywhere. Read the warranty terms for your country and the conditions attached to accidental damage, liquid exposure, wear items and self-installed components.

- Special SOS button and #2 to #9 8 keys can be set as speed dial buttons for quick assistance

Fairphone’s support guidance specifically recommends checking coverage before ordering parts. It also cautions that a part you purchase yourself may not be reimbursed later as a warranty claim. If the phone is still within the applicable warranty period, opening it first can create an avoidable dispute about responsibility for the failure.
For an out-of-warranty decision, total the part price, shipping, tools, your time and the cost of a professional repair if the attempt fails. Compare that figure with the local price of a replacement phone. A replaceable battery can make a repair attractive, while a core-module fault may lead directly to a service-centre quote.

The Gen. 6+ adds the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB of RAM, but repairability and software longevity do not guarantee flagship-level speed. Tom’s Guide’s review dated October 9, 2026, recorded Geekbench 6 results of 1,314 single-core and 3,674 multi-core. In the same review, the phone scored 4,747 in 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited, equivalent to 28.47 frames per second.

- [Dual Layer Protection] Certified with ToughRhino Technology, fusing a flexible shock-absorbing TPU inner layer to a heavy-duty PC back shell for reliable drop protection.
- [Raised Edge Protection] Elevated bezels safeguard your camera and screen from accidental damage.
- [Enhanced Grip] Non-slip textured ridges along both side borders and back panel provide a confident hold, significantly reducing accidental hand slips while texting or snapping photos.
- [Seamless Access] Precise cutouts and responsive buttons ensure easy access and smooth everyday use.
Tom’s Guide compared those results with the iPhone 17e and Pixel 10a under its own test conditions and described the Fairphone’s processing and gaming performance as weaker than those rivals. These are that reviewer’s measurements, not a universal industry ranking. Your results can vary with software versions, temperature, power settings and the particular game.
Match the phone to your workload
- Messaging, browsing, photography and ordinary productivity: the Gen. 6+’s newer processor and 12GB RAM may be more headroom than you need, so weigh the €50 premium against the repair and support benefits you value.
- Long sessions of demanding 3D games: treat the independent gaming result as a warning to compare sustained performance, frame-rate stability and thermals with the phones you are considering.
- Keeping many apps open: the listed 12GB RAM can help multitasking, but RAM capacity alone does not determine app launch speed, battery life or long-term update quality.
- Professional or specialized workloads: confirm compatibility and performance with the exact apps you use; the published benchmark numbers do not substitute for a workload-specific test.
Compare alternatives using five decision axes
Do not compare the Fairphone only on a processor chart. Put each candidate through the same questions:
- Owner repair: Can you buy the battery, display or port and install it yourself, or must a service centre handle routine wear?
- Support commitment: How many Android upgrades are promised, when does security support end, and how often are patches expected after the initial period?
- Total local cost: What is the price in your market after tax and shipping, and what would an out-of-warranty repair cost?
- Workload performance: Does the phone meet your requirements for games, camera processing, multitasking and sustained use?
- Warranty and access: Can you obtain parts and support where you live, and do local terms permit the repair route you intend to use?
This framework prevents a high benchmark score from hiding a short support horizon, and it prevents a repairable design from being treated as proof that every failure will be inexpensive.

Questions to answer about your region before ordering
- Is the Gen. 6+ officially sold and serviced in your country, or would you be importing it?
- Does the displayed €649 price include local VAT, shipping and any import charges?
- Are replacement parts stocked for delivery to your address?
- Which warranty terms apply to your purchase channel, and where is the authorized repair route?
- Will your carrier support the phone’s network bands, eSIM or other service requirements?
- How will you obtain help if a core-module fault appears after the seller’s return window?
These checks matter more than a global list price. A phone can be excellent value in a supported market and inconvenient in a region where parts, warranty service or shipping are limited.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the Fairphone (Gen. 6+)?
It is a strong fit if you prioritize
- replacing common modules instead of discarding the whole phone;
- a security-support plan extending to June 2033;
- an official repair path with published instructions;
- 12GB of RAM and the newer Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 over the Gen. 6’s listed configuration;
- keeping a phone for several years and accepting some hands-on maintenance.
Think twice if you prioritize
- the highest gaming or benchmark performance for the money;
- a repair centre and parts network guaranteed in every country;
- the lowest purchase price regardless of long-term serviceability;
- replacement of any internal failure by simply swapping a module, since the core module is not sold separately;
- an Android-upgrade count that is higher than the earlier Gen. 6’s published minimum.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm the listing says The Fairphone (Gen. 6+), not Gen. 6.
- Record the local delivered price and compare it with the €599 Gen. 6 listing where that model is available.
- Decide whether the Gen. 6+’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB RAM justify the premium for your workload.
- Read the separate support roadmaps: six minimum Android upgrades from Android 16 for the + model, seven from Android 15 for Gen. 6, and security support for both through June 2033.
- Check that replacement parts for your exact model are sold or serviceable in your region.
- Budget for a Torx T5 screwdriver and a safe workspace if you plan to repair the phone yourself.
- Read the regional five-year warranty terms and ask what happens if you install a self-purchased part.
- Identify the repair-centre route for a suspected core-module fault.
- Compare Tom’s Guide’s reported performance results with the demands of your own games and apps rather than treating them as a universal ranking.
- Buy only after the repair access, support horizon, local cost and performance trade-offs all match your priorities.
