Tata Elxsi can suit a long-term portfolio only if three tests are passed together: its transportation, media and communications, and healthcare businesses must produce durable growth; execution must protect margins despite wage and talent pressure; and the share price must leave room for realistic earnings growth. The latest official quarter, Q2 FY2027 (ended September 30, 2026), showed strong year-over-year growth, but also high customer concentration. Treat the decision as a quality-and-valuation exercise, not as a vote for a well-known brand.
The short answer: quality is not the same as a good entry price
Tata Elxsi is a design and technology-services company serving automotive and transportation, broadcast and media, communications, healthcare, and related industries. Its recent disclosures highlight connected vehicles, cloud telematics, generative-AI experiences, aerospace engineering, and medical-device product engineering. Those markets can support years of spending, but a project announcement becomes a durable investment thesis only when it converts into repeatable revenue, acceptable pricing, healthy cash collection, and multi-year renewals.

Before buying, work through seven questions:
- Are the company’s end markets and service offerings likely to grow through a full business cycle?
- Is reported growth broad, profitable, and visible in constant-currency terms rather than driven by one-off items?
- Could the loss or slowdown of a few large customers materially hurt results?
- Can Tata Elxsi retain skilled employees and preserve delivery margins after salary increases?
- Does accounting profit convert into cash, and is surplus cash deployed sensibly?
- Does the intended purchase price make sense under conservative earnings assumptions?
- Are governance, related-party disclosures, audit quality, and regulatory records clean and current?
A “yes” on the business questions does not automatically make the shares attractive. The price you pay determines the return you can earn.
What the latest quarter actually showed
Tata Elxsi’s Q2 FY2027 results, for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, provide the most recent official operating snapshot. The company reported the following figures in its quarterly release and fact sheet.
#1 Best Overall

- It can be a gift option
| Measure | Q2 FY2027 result | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Operating revenue | ₹1,055.7 crore | Up 3.4% quarter over quarter and 15.0% year over year in rupee terms |
| Constant-currency revenue growth | 2.3% quarter over quarter; 7.8% year over year | Removes the effect of currency movements |
| EBITDA | ₹231.4 crore | Up 19.7% year over year |
| EBITDA margin | 21.9% | Reported after company-wide salary revisions |
| Profit after tax | ₹170.3 crore | Quarterly PAT |
| Basic earnings per share | ₹27.34 | For Q2 FY2027 |
| Headcount | 11,540 | Reported at the quarter’s end |
| Attrition | 15.9% | Company-reported attrition measure for the quarter |
CEO and Managing Director Manoj Raghavan described the quarter this way: “During the second quarter of FY’27, Tata Elxsi reported operating revenue of Rs. 1,055.7 crores, growing 3.4% QoQ in rupee terms and 2.3% QoQ in constant currency.” The distinction matters: rupee growth includes currency effects, while constant-currency growth is a cleaner indicator of underlying demand.
1. Test whether the business has durable demand
Transportation and automotive
Transportation was 55.3% of SDS revenue in Q2 FY2027, making it the dominant disclosed vertical. Constant-currency quarter-over-quarter growth was 2.0%. Connected vehicles, software-defined vehicles, cloud telematics, safety systems, and related engineering can create long programs, but they also depend on automaker production cycles, model launches, and client technology budgets.
Read customer commentary for evidence that work is moving from pilots to production and from one program to several. Favor contracts that include recurring software, platform maintenance, validation, or multi-year engineering capacity. Treat a single design win, prototype, or press announcement as an option rather than as booked long-term revenue until subsequent filings show conversion.

Media and Communications contributed 33.6% of SDS revenue and grew 3.4% quarter over quarter in constant currency. Broadcast transformation, streaming infrastructure, network modernization, and cloud workflows can be resilient secular themes, but spending can be postponed when media companies face advertising or subscriber pressure.
Check whether growth comes from several customers and service lines. A broad base of repeat engagements is safer than dependence on one platform migration or one large broadcaster. Also examine pricing: high activity with declining billing rates can produce revenue growth without improving shareholder returns.
Healthcare and life sciences
Healthcare and Life Sciences represented 9.3% of SDS revenue and grew 3.5% quarter over quarter in constant currency. Medical-device product engineering and regulated development can create switching costs because customers value quality systems, documentation, and domain expertise.

However, regulated projects may have lengthy approval cycles and concentrated client budgets. Verify that new work is entering later development stages, that quality metrics remain acceptable, and that revenue is not being recognized ahead of cash collection. This vertical is smaller than the other two, so even rapid percentage growth may not change the group’s overall trajectory immediately.

Track each vertical’s share, constant-currency growth, order or deal commentary, and margin contribution every quarter. A healthy mix can broaden over time; a falling share for one vertical is not automatically bad if another is expanding profitably, but it deserves an explanation. Look for growth that is broad enough to survive a pause at one end customer or in one industry.
2. Separate high-quality growth from headline growth
Q2 FY2027 revenue rose 15.0% year over year in rupee terms, while constant-currency growth was 7.8%. EBITDA grew 19.7% year over year. This combination indicates operating leverage in the reported quarter, but one quarter cannot establish a trend.
For each subsequent release, reconcile four layers:
- Reported revenue: the figure in rupees that affects the income statement.
- Constant-currency revenue: the company’s view of growth excluding currency translation.
- Profit growth: EBITDA, PAT, and EPS growth relative to revenue growth.
- Cash growth: operating cash flow and free cash flow after working-capital movements and capital expenditure.
Investigate any gap between revenue and profit. A widening margin can reflect genuine utilization and pricing gains, but it can also reflect temporary subcontractor savings, favorable currency, or unusually low costs. Conversely, a margin dip after salary revisions may be an intentional investment in capability rather than a structural problem. The key is whether management can explain the change and whether later quarters validate it.
3. Measure customer concentration before assuming diversification
The top five customers accounted for 48.9% of revenue and the top ten for 59.2% in the reported period. That level of concentration means a few contract decisions can materially affect revenue, utilization, margins, and cash collection.
Request or calculate the following from annual and quarterly disclosures:
- Revenue share of the largest customer and how it has changed.
- Renewal rates, contract duration, and the portion of work under committed statements of work.
- Receivable days and overdue balances by customer category where disclosed.
- Whether new wins add independent customers or expand existing accounts.
- Exposure to a customer’s product launch, geography, or regulatory event.
Concentration is not automatically a flaw. Large customers can provide scale, technical depth, and long programs. The risk rises when one account controls a critical capability, has weak payment behavior, or can insource the work quickly. Look for evidence that customer additions are reducing dependence over time rather than merely increasing the size of the same accounts.
4. Check whether people and execution can sustain margins
Services businesses sell specialized employee time and intellectual property. Tata Elxsi reported 11,540 employees and 15.9% attrition in Q2 FY2027. The quarter’s 21.9% EBITDA margin came after company-wide salary revisions, so future quarters should show whether pricing, utilization, automation, and project mix can absorb ongoing wage pressure.

Operating indicators to follow
- Utilization: falling utilization can signal weak demand or delayed projects before revenue declines.
- Attrition by skill and seniority: headline attrition may hide losses in scarce engineering roles.
- Hiring quality: rapid hiring is useful only if new staff become productive without excessive bench time.
- Subcontracting: a rising subcontractor bill can protect delivery in the short term while compressing margins.
- Pricing and mix: premium engineering and platform work should support better economics than commoditized staffing.
- AI-enabled delivery: tools may improve productivity, but assess whether customers will capture the savings through lower prices or whether Tata Elxsi can convert them into additional billable capacity.
Compare employee growth with revenue growth and operating profit over several quarters. If headcount rises much faster than demand, utilization and margins may weaken. If revenue grows with stable or lower headcount, determine whether productivity gains are durable or simply reflect deferred hiring.
5. Examine the balance sheet and cash deployment
The FY2025–26 annual report recorded ₹194.52 crore of cash and cash equivalents and ₹1,474.11 crore of other bank balances at March 31, 2026. Total equity was ₹3,041.34 crore. These are year-end figures, not a promise that the same balances remain available today.
Use the balance sheet as a source of resilience, not as a substitute for valuation. Check:
Rank #4
- Operating cash flow compared with PAT over a multi-year period.
- Receivables and unbilled revenue relative to sales.
- Capital expenditure required to maintain delivery capacity.
- Dividend payments against free cash flow rather than accounting profit alone.
- Acquisitions, investments, or strategic deposits and the returns they generate.
- Interest income and the return earned on surplus cash.
A cash-rich company can withstand a downturn, fund capability, or return capital. It can also destroy value if cash sits idle, is deployed into overpriced acquisitions, or is used to mask weak operating cash generation. Read the cash-flow statement, notes on bank balances, and capital-allocation commentary together.

Business quality does not establish a fair share price. Calculate valuation at your intended entry price, then test what happens if growth or margins disappoint.
Core calculations
- Forward P/E: divide the market price by a realistic next-12-month EPS estimate. Build the estimate from conservative revenue growth and margin assumptions rather than simply annualizing one strong quarter.
- EV/EBITDA: add debt and subtract cash and cash-like balances from market capitalization, then divide by forward EBITDA. Be consistent about which bank balances qualify as excess cash.
- Free-cash-flow yield: divide normalized free cash flow by market capitalization. Adjust for unusual working-capital releases or one-time investments.
- Growth-adjusted case: model a base, downside, and upside path for revenue growth, EBITDA margin, tax, and reinvestment.
Build a downside case
Stress-test a scenario in which transportation growth slows, one major customer reduces work, attrition raises delivery costs, and constant-currency growth trails reported growth. Then ask whether the implied valuation still offers an acceptable return over your holding period. Include a second case with stable revenue but lower margins; concentrated customers make this especially relevant.
The official materials reviewed for this guide do not provide a contemporaneous share price or independent forward earnings estimates. Therefore, they cannot support a current claim that Tata Elxsi is cheap, fairly valued, or overvalued. Obtain a current market price and use estimates you can defend before making that judgment. Compare the resulting multiples with Indian engineering and IT-services peers and with Tata Elxsi’s own historical valuation range, using consistent accounting definitions.

The FY2025–26 annual report identifies Manoj Raghavan as Managing Director and CEO, Nalin Rana as CFO from May 30, 2026, and BSR & Co. LLP as statutory auditor. Recheck subsequent exchange filings before investing because management, auditor, related-party, and regulatory information can change after an annual report is published.
Read the risk-management, related-party, auditor’s report, contingent-liability, and cash-flow sections rather than relying on the income statement alone. Look for qualified or emphasis-of-matter paragraphs, unusual receivables, guarantees, large related-party transactions, sudden changes in accounting estimates, or regulatory matters that could affect cash flows.

The company’s Q2 FY2027 fact sheet expressly says: “This fact sheet does not constitute a recommendation by the Company or any other party to sell or buy any securities of the Company.” It also states: “Past performance does not guarantee or indicate future results.” Treat company disclosures as evidence to analyze, not as an investment recommendation.
How to compare Tata Elxsi with another stock
Use the same definitions and period for every company. A comparison based only on P/E can hide differences in growth quality, cash conversion, or customer risk.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Revenue growth | How fast are reported and constant-currency sales growing, and is growth broad based? |
| Profitability | What are EBIT or EBITDA margins, and how sensitive are they to wages, utilization, and currency? |
| Customer concentration | How much revenue depends on the largest five and ten customers? |
| Vertical exposure | Which industries drive demand, and how cyclical or regulated are they? |
| People metrics | What are attrition, utilization, hiring, subcontracting, and productivity trends? |
| Cash conversion | Does operating cash flow track PAT after working-capital changes? |
| Liquidity | How much cash is available, and what return does management earn on it? |
| Valuation | What do forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, and free-cash-flow yield imply under the same assumptions? |
| Capital returns | Are dividends sustainable, and is there a disciplined approach to acquisitions or buybacks? |
| Governance | Are management, auditor, related-party, and regulatory disclosures clear and stable? |
A practical pre-purchase checklist
Complete this sequence before placing an order:
- Download the latest quarterly release, fact sheet, annual report, and exchange filings.
- Record revenue, constant-currency growth, EBITDA margin, PAT, and EPS for at least the latest quarter and comparable prior periods.
- Map revenue by transportation, media and communications, and healthcare and life sciences; note changes in mix.
- Record top-five and top-ten customer concentration, then investigate renewals and diversification.
- Check headcount, attrition, utilization, subcontracting, salary revisions, and commentary on delivery capacity.
- Reconcile PAT with operating cash flow, receivables, unbilled revenue, capital expenditure, and dividends.
- Calculate forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, and free-cash-flow yield at the actual price you would pay.
- Run a downside case with slower growth, lower margins, and a major-customer reduction.
- Read risk, related-party, auditor, and cash-flow notes and confirm there are no unresolved red flags.
- Decide position size and an evidence-based review trigger before buying; do not let a falling price substitute for a changed thesis.
What to monitor after buying
Review every quarterly release for the same scorecard: revenue and constant-currency growth, EBITDA margin, PAT, EPS, vertical mix, customer concentration, headcount, attrition, utilization, and cash flow. Recalculate valuation whenever the market price moves materially or your earnings assumptions change. Read each annual report’s risk, related-party, auditor, and cash-flow sections before adding to the position.

Escalate your review if growth becomes dependent on one customer, constant-currency growth repeatedly trails reported growth, margins fall without a credible recovery plan, attrition rises in critical skills, receivables grow faster than sales, or surplus cash is deployed without a clear return rationale. Conversely, durable multi-vertical growth, stable or improving cash conversion, and disciplined capital allocation can strengthen the long-term case—but only relative to the price you paid.
Bottom line for a long-term investor
Tata Elxsi’s Q2 FY2027 numbers show a profitable, growing business: ₹1,055.7 crore of operating revenue, 21.9% EBITDA margin, ₹170.3 crore PAT, and ₹27.34 basic EPS. The main diligence challenge is concentration—nearly half of revenue came from the top five customers—combined with the need to retain specialized employees while protecting margins.
Buy only when your own valuation model still offers an acceptable return after allowing for slower constant-currency growth, customer loss, wage pressure, and weaker cash conversion. If you cannot obtain a current price, defensible forward estimates, and up-to-date filings, the appropriate action is to wait for better evidence rather than infer a bargain from operating quality alone.
