Sony’s WF-C510 and WF-C710N are not interchangeable budget earbuds. The WF-C510 is the simpler option for listeners who want long playback, ambient sound, multipoint and basic splash resistance without active noise canceling. The WF-C710N adds active noise canceling, dual microphones and a larger case-inclusive battery claim, making it the better fit for commuting and noisy offices. Both use Bluetooth 5.3, SBC/AAC codecs, multipoint and an IPX4 rating, so the right choice depends mainly on noise-control needs, the battery mode you will actually use, device compatibility and how securely the supplied tips fit.

Start with the feature that changes the decision: noise control

Choose WF-C510 when you do not need active noise canceling

Sony positions the WF-C510 as a straightforward everyday pair. It offers an ambient sound mode, which lets surrounding sound through, but Sony does not list active noise canceling for this model. That makes it the sensible choice when you mainly listen at home, in a relatively quiet office, while walking, or during light exercise and would rather avoid paying for a feature you will not use.

Ambient sound is useful for hearing announcements, traffic and nearby conversations without removing an earbud. It is not the same as active noise canceling: it does not create the same reduction in a train, aircraft cabin or loud open-plan office. If low-frequency environmental noise is a primary reason for buying wireless earbuds, move to the WF-C710N comparison instead of assuming an ambient mode will provide equivalent isolation.

Choose WF-C710N when reducing outside noise is a priority

The WF-C710N is Sony’s step-up model in this pair. Sony lists active noise canceling, ambient sound and dual microphones, describing it as an everyday noise-canceling earbud. ANC is the feature that separates the two models most clearly. It can make steady background sounds less intrusive, helping speech, podcasts and music remain intelligible at lower listening levels.

  • NOISE CANCELING: Advanced Noise Canceling and Dual Noise Sensor technology filters exterior sound using two microphones and allows you to enjoy more of your music.
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE: With up to 8.5 hours on your earbuds and up to 21.5 hours in the case, enjoy all-day comfort and up to 30 hours of listening when fully charged. Quick charging, 5 min charge for up to 1 hour of playback.
  • CRYSTAL CLEAR CALL QUALITY: With Precise Voice Pickup Technology, conversations are ultra clear, even in noisy environments. Our noise reduction algorithm uses AI machine learning to suppress ambient noise and extract your voice clearly.
  • DIGITAL SOUND ENHANCEMENT ENGINE (DSEE): Experience a powerful bass and clear vocals with digital Sony Enhancement Engine (DSEE) processing and Sony’s unique 5 mm driver.
  • SOPHISTICATED DESIGN: With a naturally elegant and compact design, bring a touch of beauty to your day and choose between three timeless colors, including Glass Blue, White, and Black.

ANC performance is still dependent on the seal in your ears, the type of noise and the mode you select. A poor fit leaves gaps that let sound in, while intermittent voices and sharp sounds are harder for any ANC system to remove than a steady engine hum. Treat the WF-C710N as the relevant model for noise reduction, not as a guarantee that every environment will become quiet.

Compare the published specifications

The following figures are Sony’s maximum or stated specifications, not independent laboratory results. Battery life changes with volume, calls, radio conditions, temperature, storage and whether noise-control features are active.

Feature Sony WF-C510 Sony WF-C710N
Noise control Ambient sound mode; no active noise canceling listed Active noise canceling and ambient sound
Earbud playback, noise-control mode on Up to 8 hours with ambient sound mode on Up to 8.5 hours with noise canceling on
Earbud playback, noise-control mode off Up to 11 hours Up to 12 hours
Case-inclusive playback Not stated by Sony in the cited specifications Up to 30 hours with ANC on; up to 40 hours with ANC off
Bluetooth Bluetooth 5.3 Bluetooth 5.3
Codecs SBC and AAC SBC and AAC
Multipoint Listed by Sony Listed by Sony
Water and dust rating IPX4 earbuds IPX4 earbuds
Microphone information in the cited specifications Microphone details are not established in the cited specification summary Sony documents dual microphones

Because the two models use the same Bluetooth version and codec set, moving to the WF-C710N is primarily a decision about ANC, battery behavior, microphones and fit rather than a change to high-resolution codec support.

Understand the battery numbers before you compare prices

WF-C510: 8 or 11 hours per charge

Sony rates the WF-C510 for up to 8 hours when ambient sound mode is on and up to 11 hours with that mode off. Those are per-earbud playback figures under Sony’s stated conditions. Calls, louder volume and poor radio conditions can reduce the result, so do not treat 11 hours as a guaranteed workday in every setup.

If you leave ambient sound enabled for awareness outdoors, use the 8-hour figure as the more relevant planning number. If you normally listen with the feature off, the 11-hour maximum is the appropriate comparison point. Sony’s cited material does not establish a case-total figure for the WF-C510, so avoid judging it by a case number that belongs to the other model.

WF-C710N: 8.5 hours with ANC, 12 hours without it

The WF-C710N is rated for up to 8.5 hours per charge with noise canceling on or up to 12 hours with it off. That gives the ANC model a slightly longer maximum when all noise control is disabled, but ANC use lowers the per-charge figure. If you need noise reduction throughout a commute or a long flight, plan around the 8.5-hour rating rather than the 12-hour headline.

Case totals are a separate measurement

Sony states up to 30 hours total for the WF-C710N with ANC on and up to 40 hours with ANC off. These totals combine repeated earbud charges from the case; they are not 30 or 40 hours from one charge. The case total also varies with how often you top up, the selected mode and real-world operating conditions.

For either model, compare your routine to the mode-specific number: commuting with ANC, walking with ambient sound, or desk listening with both modes off. A buyer who regularly uses ANC should not use the longer ANC-off figure to estimate daily endurance.

Check multipoint against your actual devices

Both WF-C510 and WF-C710N list multipoint, allowing a connection pattern that can include a phone and a laptop. This is important if you take calls on your phone while listening to a computer, attend meetings, or move between two personal devices during the day.

Multipoint is not a universal promise that every device will switch perfectly. Sony cautions that interoperability varies. Confirm that your phone, laptop and operating-system versions support the switching behavior you expect, and check whether your work computer restricts Bluetooth or companion-app access.

A practical pre-purchase test

  1. Write down the two devices you need connected most often, such as an Android phone and a Windows laptop.
  2. Check that both devices support Bluetooth audio and allow a second simultaneous connection.
  3. After purchase, pair the earbuds with each device and verify that music pauses or audio changes as expected when a call arrives on the other device.
  4. If switching is unreliable, disconnect unused Bluetooth accessories, update the earbuds and app, then pair both devices again before concluding that multipoint is defective.

The feature is listed on both models, so it should be a buying requirement rather than a reason alone to pay for the WF-C710N.

Know what Bluetooth 5.3 and the codecs do—and do not—tell you

Both models use Bluetooth 5.3 and support the SBC and AAC codecs. That combination covers the standard wireless-audio formats used by many phones, tablets and computers. It does not mean either model supports every proprietary or high-resolution codec.

Codec compatibility is negotiated by the source device. A phone may select AAC while a computer uses SBC, depending on its operating system and settings. If your buying decision depends on a particular codec, check the source device’s documented support rather than assuming Bluetooth 5.3 guarantees it.

Bluetooth version also does not predict battery life, microphone quality or multipoint behavior by itself. Those are separate product and software decisions, which is why the published feature list should be read as a whole.

Assess water exposure realistically

IPX4 protects against splashes

Sony gives the earbuds an IPX4 rating. That is suitable for splashes and light sweat during ordinary use, such as a walk, a gym session or a drizzle. It is not an immersion rating and does not make the earbuds suitable for swimming, showering or deliberate rinsing under a tap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dry the earbuds before placing them in the charging case. Moisture trapped around the contacts can interfere with charging, and repeated exposure beyond the rating can shorten the product’s life.

Keep the WF-C710N case dry

Sony explicitly says the WF-C710N charging case is not water resistant. The case has a different exposure risk from the earbuds: do not leave it on wet gym equipment, in a damp pocket or near a sink, even if the earbuds themselves have handled sweat.

The cited specifications establish IPX4 for the WF-C510 earbuds; they do not establish a water-resistance rating for its case. In practical terms, treat both charging cases as dry accessories unless Sony’s model-specific documentation says otherwise.

Fit and comfort are worth checking before judging sound or ANC

Sony supplies hybrid silicone ear tips with both models. The correct size creates a stable seal without painful pressure. That seal affects bass response, passive isolation and, on the WF-C710N, how effective ANC feels.

Use the supplied sizes methodically

  1. Start with the installed tips and insert the earbuds without forcing them deep into the ear canal.
  2. Play familiar music or a spoken track and compare the seal in each ear; one ear may need a different size.
  3. Walk, turn your head and speak to check whether the earbuds loosen or produce a hollow, shifting sound.
  4. Try the next tip size when bass is weak, outside sound leaks in, or the earbuds move during normal activity.

Replaceable tips can help, but verify the exact model and tip dimensions before ordering third-party replacements. A tip that fits the nozzle but changes the seal or blocks a microphone opening can worsen comfort or call performance.

There is no universal comfort result for either model. Ear shape, glasses, movement and listening time vary, so a return policy is valuable if you cannot try the earbuds first.

Calls and microphone expectations

The WF-C710N’s cited specifications identify dual microphones, which is relevant if calls are a major part of your day. The available specification summary does not establish equivalent microphone details for the WF-C510. That does not prove the C510 is unsuitable for calls; it means you should not infer call performance from the shared Bluetooth version or codec list.

Microphone quality also depends on wind, room reflections, the phone or computer’s Bluetooth implementation and the fit of the earbuds. If clear calls are essential, test the model with your primary phone and laptop during the return period, including a call outdoors or in the environment where you work.

Use Sony’s software and keep firmware current

Sony’s Sound Connect app is part of the ownership experience. The WF-C710N support page lists firmware version 1.0.5, released November 26, 2025, and Sound Connect information dated May 25, 2026. These dated entries show why you should check current app and firmware support instead of assuming every advertised behavior is unchanged from the day you buy.

  1. Install the current Sony Sound Connect app from your device’s official app store.
  2. Pair the earbuds with the phone you will use for updates and controls.
  3. Open the model’s support or device-information area and check the installed firmware version.
  4. Apply an available update with the earbuds charged and close to the phone; do not interrupt the process by removing them or disabling Bluetooth.
  5. After updating, recheck multipoint, noise-control modes and any controls you rely on.

App features and compatibility can vary by phone, operating system and region. Confirm support for your devices before purchase if app-based controls or updates are central to your decision. The same general caution applies to the WF-C510: verify that your phone and the current Sound Connect release recognize that model.

Decide which model fits your routine

WF-C510 is the better match when these statements are true

  • You do not need active noise canceling for commuting or office work.
  • You value up to 11 hours per charge with ambient sound off.
  • You want ambient sound, multipoint and Bluetooth 5.3 without moving to the ANC model.
  • Your exercise exposure is limited to splashes or light sweat, and you will keep the case dry.
  • You are comfortable evaluating call performance yourself because the cited specification summary does not detail its microphones.

WF-C710N is the better match when these statements are true

  • You regularly face train, aircraft, street or open-office noise and want active noise canceling.
  • You need dual microphones documented by Sony for a call-heavy routine.
  • You can accept up to 8.5 hours per charge when ANC is on, or up to 12 hours with ANC off.
  • You value the stated case totals of up to 30 hours with ANC on and up to 40 hours with ANC off.
  • You will keep the charging case away from water and rely on the earbuds’ IPX4 splash protection only.

Questions to answer before placing an order

  • Do I need ANC? If yes, the WF-C710N is the model in this pair with Sony-listed active noise canceling.
  • How many hours do I actually need? Compare your routine with the mode-on figure, not only the longest mode-off claim.
  • Will multipoint work with my phone and laptop? Both list it, but Sony notes that interoperability varies; check both devices and test switching promptly.
  • Will I use them around water? IPX4 covers splashes and light sweat, not immersion. Keep either case dry, and note Sony’s explicit warning that the WF-C710N case is not water resistant.
  • Are the included tips likely to fit? Try every supplied size and use the return window if the seal, stability or comfort is poor.
  • Are app updates available for my setup? Check Sound Connect compatibility and the model’s support page before relying on app controls or firmware-dependent behavior.
  • What will I pay? Retail price, stock, seller and regional warranty change over time and by country. Compare the current listings for the exact model number rather than using an old launch price.

Bottom-line buying guidance

Buy the WF-C510 when your priority is a simpler, non-ANC earbud with ambient sound, multipoint and up to 11 hours per charge with ambient sound off. Pay for the WF-C710N when active noise canceling, documented dual microphones or the larger stated case totals solve a real problem in your routine. In either case, treat the battery figures as maximums, verify multipoint with your own devices, fit the supplied tips carefully and protect the charging case from moisture.
