What to Check Before Buying Paint Stocks in India

Before buying an Indian paint stock, test seven things together: sustainable sales and volume growth, margins, cash conversion, competitive strength, input-cost resilience, balance-sheet and capital-allocation discipline, and valuation at a clearly stated date. Read the latest annual report, quarterly results and stock-exchange disclosures, and compare companies on identical periods and accounting bases. A historical revenue CAGR by itself cannot show whether a share is attractive today.

Start with a comparable set of companies

Indian listed paint businesses do not all have the same product mix, customer base or scale. Decorative paints sold through retail dealers behave differently from industrial coatings supplied to automobile, engineering and infrastructure customers. A meaningful comparison therefore starts by defining the companies and periods you will examine.

The July 2025 draft prospectus hosted by SEBI describes Asian Paints, Berger Paints and Kansai Nerolac as leading incumbents and identifies newer entrants including Birla Opus (Grasim Paints) and JSW. That is a dated industry snapshot, not evidence that a particular entrant has already changed market share, prices or profits. The same document says the three named incumbents together held “over ~80%” of market share, but the retrieved passage does not specify a measurement date or methodology. Treat it as an estimate from that prospectus, not a precise current market-share figure.

For a comparison, use consolidated numbers when subsidiaries or joint ventures materially affect results. If you use standalone accounts, use them for every company and explain what is excluded. Do not mix a consolidated revenue figure for one issuer with a standalone margin for another.

1. Check sales quality, not just headline revenue

Measure several years and the latest quarter

Pull revenue from operations for at least five financial years, then compare the latest quarter with the same quarter a year earlier. A sequential quarter can be distorted by monsoon timing, festival demand, dealer inventory or a low base. Look for a pattern across multiple quarters instead of treating one strong result as a durable trend.

Separate reported growth into volume, price and mix wherever management discloses those components. Revenue can rise because prices increased while physical demand fell. Conversely, flat revenue may conceal healthy volumes offset by lower prices or a shift toward mass-market products. Record the company’s definition of volume; some issuers report volume in tonnes, while decorative businesses may use litres or a derived measure.

Compare decorative and industrial exposure

Decorative coatings generally depend on housing, repainting cycles, dealer reach and consumer spending. Industrial coatings can depend on automobile production, construction, capital goods and long-term customer contracts. Compare each segment’s growth, margins and share of revenue rather than ranking companies on total growth alone.

Also examine premium versus economy products, geography and channel mix. Premiumisation can lift average selling prices and margins, but it may weaken if consumers trade down. A company expanding distribution into smaller towns may incur near-term selling costs before sales density improves.

Historical figures are context, not a forecast

The SEBI-hosted July 2025 prospectus attributes the following FY2019–FY2024 revenue figures and CAGRs to annual reports and Technopak Analysis. They describe a completed historical period and should not be presented as expected future returns or current growth rates.

Company FY2019 revenue from operations (INR billion) FY2024 revenue from operations (INR billion) FY2019–FY2024 CAGR
Asian Paints 192.49 354.95 13.02%
Berger Paints 60.62 111.99 13.06%
Kansai Nerolac 54.24 78.01 7.54%
Akzo Nobel India 29.18 39.62 6.30%
Indigo Paints 5.36 13.06 21.72%

The different starting sizes matter. A smaller company can post a higher percentage CAGR from a low base, while a large incumbent may generate more absolute revenue and cash with a lower percentage rate. Reconcile the prospectus table with each issuer’s annual report before using it in an investment model.

2. Test profitability and cash conversion separately

Track margins through a cycle

Build a multi-year series for gross margin, EBITDA or operating margin, profit after tax and earnings per share. Note whether a margin change came from pricing, raw-material costs, product mix, advertising, freight, employee costs or operating leverage. A margin that expands only because input prices temporarily fell is different from one supported by durable pricing power and productivity.

Compare the latest quarter with the prior-year quarter and with the company’s own longer-term range. Read management’s explanation for unusual movements, but verify it against the income statement and notes. A reported margin percentage without its accounting basis is not comparable across companies.

Reconcile profit with operating cash flow

Download the cash-flow statement and compare cash generated from operations with reported profit over several years. Persistent profit growth without corresponding operating cash deserves investigation. Check whether receivables, inventory or advances are absorbing cash, and calculate working-capital changes relative to sales.

Receivables may rise when dealers receive longer credit or when industrial customers pay slowly. Inventory can increase ahead of a launch, but a build that persists while sales weaken may signal obsolete shades, excess finished goods or poor demand forecasting. Examine cash conversion before treating accounting earnings as distributable cash.

Use filings for company-specific evidence

Investor pages for Asian Paints, Kansai Nerolac and Indigo Paints provide annual reports, quarterly results, shareholding information, governance documents and investor-call materials. Those portals show what an issuer has disclosed; publication of a disclosure is not independent confirmation that the business is high quality. Check the underlying statements, notes and exchange filings yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Investigate competition and pricing power

Translate new entry into measurable effects

Birla Opus and JSW are identified as new entrants in the July 2025 prospectus. Entry alone does not prove disruption. Look in subsequent results and investor-call transcripts for evidence in actual volumes, dealer additions, discounts, advertising intensity, gross margin and regional performance.

Ask whether a company is defending distribution, gaining shelf space or responding with price cuts. A strong brand can preserve volume but sacrifice margin through promotions. Conversely, temporary discounting may be rational if it secures dealers or a strategic segment. Separate management’s stated strategy from observable outcomes.

Assess the distribution moat

Review dealer and tinting-machine reach, depot coverage, logistics costs, service levels and the proportion of sales through different channels. Distribution is valuable only when outlets generate profitable, repeat demand. Track selling and distribution expenses alongside outlet expansion.

Examine innovation and brand investment

List significant product launches and the categories they target: waterproofing, construction chemicals, premium interiors, industrial coatings or other adjacent products. Compare research, advertising and promotional spending with incremental sales and margin. A large launch budget is an investment, not proof of a successful product.

4. Understand raw-material exposure and pass-through

Paint formulations use multiple chemicals, pigments, resins, solvents, packaging materials and additives. Do not assume crude oil alone determines profitability; product mixes and procurement contracts differ. Read the notes and management commentary for the company’s principal raw materials, inventory policy and exposure to imported inputs or currency movements.

Ask four pass-through questions

  1. How much did raw-material costs change in the period?
  2. Did the company raise prices, reduce discounts or alter pack sizes?
  3. How long was the lag between cost inflation and price action?
  4. Did margins recover when costs eased, or did competition retain the benefit?

Compare cost of materials, gross margin and selling prices over several periods. A company that passes through costs quickly may protect margins but risk volume. One that delays increases may preserve market share while suffering a temporary margin decline. The available industry comparison does not establish a current, comparable pass-through lag for each issuer, so use each company’s filings rather than a sector-wide assumption.

5. Examine debt, capacity and capital allocation

Balance-sheet checks

  • Review total debt, lease liabilities, cash, net debt and interest expense.
  • Compare interest coverage and operating cash flow with scheduled obligations.
  • Read contingent liabilities, guarantees and commitments in the notes.
  • Check whether acquisitions or joint ventures introduce debt or funding needs not visible in a simple standalone view.

A low-debt company can still destroy value through uneconomic capacity additions or acquisitions. A company with moderate leverage may be sound if cash flows are stable and projects earn attractive returns. Judge debt against the business cycle, not against a universal zero-debt rule.

Evaluate capacity projects

Record announced and completed capacity, the spending required, commissioning dates and current utilisation. Compare projected demand with the timing of new capacity. Under-utilised plants can depress returns through depreciation and fixed costs; delayed projects can create supply constraints but may also reflect disciplined capital spending.

Review dividends and buybacks

Compare dividends and repurchases with free cash flow, debt and investment requirements. A payout funded by borrowing or by running down necessary working capital is not equivalent to a payout from recurring surplus cash. Read the board rationale and check whether capital returns are consistent over time.

6. Read governance and ownership disclosures

Read the auditor’s opinion, key audit matters, related-party transactions, promoter and institutional shareholding, remuneration, contingent liabilities and material exchange filings. Compare these items over several years rather than reacting to one change. A change in promoter or institutional ownership is a signal to investigate, not automatic evidence of misconduct.

Ownership questions to document

  • Has promoter ownership changed, and are shares pledged?
  • Are institutional holdings rising because of long-term ownership or short-term trading?
  • Do related-party transactions have clear commercial terms and board approval?
  • Does executive remuneration track performance and company scale?
  • Are there qualified, adverse or emphasis-of-matter audit observations?

Investor portals link to shareholding patterns, governance materials and compliance filings. Treat those documents as primary disclosures, then test important claims against financial statements, exchange announcements and board reports.

7. Value the stock using current, like-for-like data

Valuation is date-sensitive. State the share-price date, the earnings period, whether earnings are trailing or estimated, and whether the figures are consolidated or standalone. Refresh the price and earnings data immediately before making a decision; old revenue figures cannot establish that a share is cheap or expensive.

Use several measures

  • Price-to-earnings: compare with companies that have similar growth, margins, leverage and accounting bases.
  • Enterprise value to operating profit: useful when debt and cash balances differ, provided operating-profit definitions match.
  • Price-to-sales: a secondary measure that must be paired with margin and cash-conversion analysis.
  • Free-cash-flow yield: meaningful only after normalising working capital and maintenance capital expenditure.
  • Return on invested capital: helps test whether growth creates value, especially during capacity expansion.

The historical prospectus data does not establish synchronized current multiples. Do not label one company the best value or the cheapest without a fresh, comparable dataset.

Stress-test expectations

Model at least three cases: normal demand, slower volume growth and sustained competitive discounting. Add a case with higher input costs and delayed price increases. Examine the effect on revenue, operating margin, cash flow and valuation. A stock priced for rapid growth has less room for execution mistakes than one priced for modest improvement.

How to perform the review step by step

  1. Set the comparison date. Use the latest results available and write down the share-price date and financial period.
  2. Collect primary documents. Download the latest annual report, two or more recent quarterly results, investor presentation, call transcript and relevant exchange disclosures.
  3. Standardise the accounts. Choose consolidated or standalone figures and use the same definitions for every company.
  4. Build the operating table. Record revenue, volume where disclosed, decorative and industrial mix, gross margin, operating margin, profit and operating cash flow for several periods.
  5. Explain changes. Annotate each material movement with evidence about price, volume, mix, raw materials, advertising, freight or exceptional items.
  6. Check the balance sheet. Record debt, cash, interest, capital expenditure, utilisation, working capital and contingent liabilities.
  7. Test competition. Compare distribution, launches, discounts, capacity and management commentary, then look for confirmation in reported results.
  8. Calculate valuation. Use current price and the same earnings period and accounting basis across the set.
  9. Run downside cases. Stress slower demand, lower margins and higher costs, and assess whether cash and debt remain manageable.
  10. Write the uncertainty down. Mark every conclusion that depends on an estimate, management guidance or a disclosure that has not yet been independently corroborated.

Common mistakes that invalidate a paint-stock comparison

  • Choosing on CAGR alone: growth from a small base may not translate into durable profits or cash.
  • Mixing periods: comparing one company’s FY2024 results with another’s latest quarter creates a false ranking.
  • Ignoring accounting scope: standalone and consolidated figures can differ materially.
  • Calling entry a disruption: new competitors matter only when later data shows effects on volume, price or margins.
  • Assuming all paint costs move with crude: formulations and procurement differ.
  • Using one quarter as a trend: seasonality, inventory and base effects can reverse.
  • Confusing disclosure with verification: an investor presentation is the issuer’s account, not independent assurance.
  • Using stale multiples: price and earnings change daily and with every results release.
  • Ranking on one metric: business mix, cash conversion, leverage, governance and valuation must be considered together.

What a defensible conclusion looks like

A useful investment note should say what has been measured, for which period, and what remains uncertain. For example, it can identify a company with improving volumes but falling cash conversion, or strong margins alongside a valuation that assumes continued premium growth. It should distinguish sector-wide risks—housing demand, raw-material inflation and competitive intensity—from company-specific risks such as a delayed plant, weak receivables collection or related-party exposure.

Do not turn the historical figures in the 2025 prospectus into a forecast, and do not name a best or cheapest stock without refreshed valuation data. The practical decision is whether the evidence supports the price after accounting for plausible downside, not whether one company has the highest historical CAGR.
