Before placing a stock trade in a U.S. brokerage app, verify the legal firm behind the brand, read its account terms and fee schedule, confirm whether your account is cash or margin, and understand the order you are submitting. Then check the trade preview and the broker’s execution disclosures. These checks help you evaluate the service and the transaction; they do not tell you whether a stock is a suitable investment.
How to check whether a stock trading app is legitimate
An app-store listing or familiar brand name does not establish which legal entity holds your account. Find the brokerage firm’s legal name in the account agreement or relationship summary, then check the firm and any individual broker you work with.

- Search the firm and broker by name or registration number using Investor.gov’s professional lookup and FINRA BrokerCheck.
- Review registration details and available background information, including qualifications, employment history, complaints, and disciplinary matters.
- Confirm whether the brokerage firm is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). If another firm clears the trades or holds customer assets, check the relevant disclosures and SIPC membership for that firm as well.
The SEC’s guide to brokers and investment advisers recommends evaluating a firm’s services, products, costs, conflicts, and legal or disciplinary history. Registration is an important verification step, not a recommendation of the firm or its investments.

Read the account agreement, relationship summary, and current fee schedule before opening an account or submitting a trade. A zero-commission claim does not mean every service or investment is free. Broker compensation can include commissions or markups, and other charges or costs may apply.

Terms can differ by firm and account type. For a fair comparison, consider the charges that apply to the services and investments you expect to use—not just the headline trading price. The SEC’s broker guidance discusses costs, compensation, conflicts, and the documents to review.
Is the account cash or margin?
A cash account requires you to pay the full amount for a securities purchase. A margin account lets you borrow against securities in the account. Borrowing incurs interest and can magnify losses; if the account does not meet the firm’s requirements, the firm may demand additional funds or sell securities to address the shortfall.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
Check the account type selected during setup and read the account documents before agreeing to the terms. The SEC cautions that some applications may default to margin, so do not assume the account is cash simply because you did not deliberately seek to borrow. See the SEC’s brokerage account opening bulletin for details on cash and margin accounts and related fees.

An order instruction tells the broker how to handle your trade. The exact order types available—and the broker’s rules for them—can vary. The SEC’s order-types bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, says that “order types and trading instructions available to you may differ based on the brokerage firm.” It also cautions that firms may offer similarly named order types with important differences.
| Order type | What it instructs | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Market order | Submit the order for execution at the best available price under the broker’s handling and market conditions. | A particular price. The quote can change before execution. |
| Limit order | Set the maximum price you will pay to buy, or the minimum price you will accept to sell. | Execution. The market may not reach your limit while the order is active. |
Before submitting an order, check the app’s explanation of the order type, any duration or other instructions attached to it, and the broker’s specific policies. Contact the firm if its terminology or rules are unclear; the SEC recommends asking the brokerage about its order types.
Why might the execution price differ from the quote?
A screen quote is not a promise that your order will execute at that price. An online order goes to the broker, which chooses where to route it; it is not necessarily an instantaneous, direct connection to a market. Prices can move while an order is being handled, and the execution venue or routing can affect transaction costs.

Review the trade-preview screen before confirming, then check the trade confirmation for the final details. For more context, read the broker’s execution disclosures and the SEC’s explanation of trade execution.

SIPC may help return eligible customer cash and securities if a member brokerage firm fails, subject to coverage limits and conditions. The SEC’s brokerage account opening bulletin describes coverage of up to $500,000, including a $250,000 limit for cash. These limits apply to the protection described by the SEC; check SIPC’s current materials to understand how coverage applies to a specific account.

How to compare two brokerage apps
Compare the actual account services and investment choices you can use, and the terms for your particular account. A practical comparison includes:
- Available services, investments, and any limits on what the firm offers.
- All-in charges for your likely use, including account, transfer, wire, margin, and investment costs.
- Whether the account is cash or margin and how the app presents those choices.
- Order types, their specific rules, and the broker’s execution disclosures and routing practices.
- Customer-support options and service limitations.
- Registration and disciplinary records for the firm and relevant individuals, plus SIPC membership.
Do not rank apps by a “zero commission” claim alone: other charges, compensation arrangements, and conflicts may matter. The SEC’s broker guidance covers these comparison considerations.

Who this checklist applies to
This guide concerns brokerage accounts in the United States. The registration lookups, SIPC references, and account guidance described here are U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should check their local regulator, investor-compensation arrangements, account rules, and tax requirements. Firm terms, fees, registration records, order availability, and disclosures can change, so verify the current information before opening an account or placing a trade. The SEC’s World Investor Week bulletin published October 5, 2026, also advises checking professional registration and disciplinary history and confirming SIPC membership when buying securities through a U.S. brokerage firm: Investor.gov’s World Investor Week 2026 bulletin.
